I’m a new doodle owner who is amazed at the steep and deep learning curve in the grooming world. At first I was stunned at the high cost and frequency of grooming. After I learned what’s involved, I was stunned it didn’t cost more. So I try to prep my dog, listen to the groomer, and tip 30%. This interview with Liz was fun & gave me an extra dose of empathy.
Can say I have had the pleasure of working with both Tom and Liz with both of our dog. Both of them have done a great job and deserve nothing but congratulations and thanks for the quality services they provide their customers.

This is probably my most favorite episode. It has so much to learn as a dog owner, and I loved Liz's story. How she runs her business sounds amazing.
This is the first podcast on the channel I’ve decided to watch and it was great! Groomers are so hardworking, I really respect them. Grooming is hard on your body; it’s not something you can do at 100% for 40 years.
One of my favourite groomer channels is “Girl With the Dogs”. She’s absolutely fantastic.
Yes, I'm a "Girl With the Dogs" fan, too. After watching her, I can't watch any other CZcams groomers... 🙂 This was a good podcast to get some behind-the-scenes info... and now, after she yelled at me about my dog's nails, I have to do something about them.
@@GuyWithTheDogs Did you see the video where she went on vacation and then came across a dog grooming charity service for grooming homeless beach dogs? Just her spotlight on it (which was huge as she got straight to work and helped groom several dogs) raised the charity over $4000. Probably a lot more now.

All content/material is top notch here. It’s kind of funny my 6 year old grandson is mesmerized with the skill and confidence in taming bad behavior + improving canine lives. I don’t mind he’s enthralled watching him work, because it’s teaching a LOT to all of us.
I'm retired now but groomed for 44 years. I also worked with clients on behavioral and obedience issues. I always loved my work but as Liz said, I got older and had my own issues. I love watching your channel.
I'm a groomer here I can definetly relate here I love animals I was in my early 20s when I decided I wanted to do dog grooming I spent years trying to find grooming schools (there is only 3 in my province) tuition is at least 10 grand at the school I decided on going to. For 3 months woke up at 5am got to the bus station for 5:30am took a bus to the train station got to the station for 6ish am took the train to the city the school was in then took another bus to get as close to the school as possible then walked 15 minutes to school. I don't regret it I love my job many may not appreciate the craft we groomers do but I love it.
I just found a good private shop in my area and apprenticed for 2 years. I watched online classes on CZcams and learned handling techniques from my coworkers. Everyone that worked there came from different backgrounds and had been grooming for 10+ years so I got to learn a lot of different styles and learned to adopt what worked best for me. I do best with the primitive breeds and the ones that have a lot of "stranger danger" I'm really small though so I had to figure out my own ways of working with Akita's and chows and stuff. It's funny when people hand me their ovcharka or something and they're like "are you sure you can handle this? My dog is like 3x your size." I'm 4'9" 😂

So many people underestimate grooming and groomers in general. I'm a malamute owner and I think groomers are basically superheroes.
Love these kind of podcasts with different trainers/people in the dog industry. I used to work at a dog daycare and it really opened my eyes about a lot of different breeds, their personalities, body language, dominance, axciety, etc about dogs. I’ve always been into the dog industry and would love to learn more about the different dog categories (herding/work/show/etc). Keep up the awesomeness and spread the word of NO BAD DOGS!

You both have helped share what’s needed for the basics and basic care for k-9 ownership. So much of this discussion is overlooked by new or want to be owners. A lot of what was shared is the difference in having a happy k-9 and as smooth a time in ownership that’s possible.

At 45:35 The grooming tool she is referring to is actually a hacksaw blade set in a wooden block. Some tack shops sell it as the Shed ez, but there are a few different manufactures out there, varying in size and handle shape. Some of them also make a fairly decent hair removing tool for upholstery. Awesome on saddle pads.
At 50:00 that is a simple rubber curry. Oster makes a really awesome couple ones one though that are years better than that basic one. Either Fine toothed rubber currys to broader digit like ones. Saves me weeks of deshedding with my horses while still small and soft enough for a medium sized dog.
I’ve never watched this podcast before but when it came up I had to click and see where this would go and I’m very pleased. As a longtime groomer, Liz represents our industry and challenges well. I’m not all the way through this podcast but I’m excited with what I’ve heard so far. I am a master groomer and competitive groomer but at the end of the day we all groom pets, we all deal with difficult and matted dogs and your skill with handling those cases while providing them with the safest groom possible is the key in this industry. ❤️ There are bad apples in every industry but it breaks my heart when I see all groomers treated as the enemy of pet owners rather than a valuable and caring resource like myself and all my friends in the industry try to be.
As a dog walker for 9 years, I have had similar experiences. The clients that have stayed with me are the ones who appreciate when I'm honest with them about their dog and tell them exactly how he/she behaved during the walk. Some don't like it - they think their dogs are their babies and can do no wrong, and those clients usually don't stay long with me. I never "sugar coat" things but tell them honestly what is going on and what needs to happen to make their dog's experience better.
I'm a groomer in the UK and didn't know you were over here or I would have come to your seminar to learn about behavior techniques for sure. I find your videos so useful for my profession.
This video is amazing I’m a dog groomer of 10years in Australia. Grooming is hard work and sometimes it’s not recognised enough. I deal with a lot of aggressive dogs when it comes to grooming and it’s the most rewarding feeling when I build trust with these dogs. This is why I’ve started watching your video/podcasts to further my education. I love what I do it’s my hobby and my passion I just wish owners would listen and respect us more when it comes to us giving advice on what we think is best for the dog. ❤
Anytime I hear a worker talk about their job, I relate as I was a professional brass player in a professional symphony. There’s a perception that if a job is something perceived as “fun” then compensation shouldn’t be high. Ppl also don’t know how much training, how stressful, how it injures your body, etc etc and when you try to tell ppl, they say “well, you’re doing what you love.” Yeah, ..but..anything taken to a professional level is simply a different story. Appreciate the ppl who do a good job for you!

As a groomer with over 35 years of experience, I totally agree with what you say. It’s about the dog and letting the dog have the best experience they can have. I see so many shops these days are just get them in and get them out. Making a buck and not worrying about the dog’s well being. And not building a repore with the owner.

I'm a dog groomer too. It always surprises me how few people know about everything our job entails. So many people seem to think we just have an easy job where we pamper dogs and give them a "spa" experience all day. But it's sooooo much more than that

Love what you guys said about the idea of "Fear Free". I work at a vet clinic that isn't certified as fear free, but our team cares A TON about the dog being safe and comfortable, but 95% of dogs HATE the vet and all we can do is our best and be patient with them

Thank you for this!!! No one expects or understands what goes into grooming, especially doodle owners! It's partly a fault of the breeders not properly educating the new owners, but also the owners not reading up on what they're getting into. Google is an easily accessible tool.

I do all of the super styling sessions! They are super educational! It’s all via zoom which is nice for groomers who can’t travel. You also receive certifications from them as well which is nice! I’m a groomer of 12 years and Liz has been very good to me and helped me a lot as I’m opening my own salon she’s an absolute gem!

Very enlightening. I own a WSS, double coated. I didn't now that there were groomers that would consider shaving. (In my mind, absolutely not) Bless you and the work you do to help keep our 4 legged family members happy

On an episode on Dr. The Incredible Pol, this family went on vacation for a few days and left the dog with someone else that the dog kinda was familiar with, the family gets back from vacation and the dog was not eating or drinking not acting like himself. They had to take him to the vet, they gave him fluid under the sink to hydrate him. Apparently the family had never left him before, the vet ruled out medical issues, all of it was behavioral, so he was just super depressed that they left him. It took weeks to months for him to get over it and be his happy go lucky self as an energetic friendly lab. This is why anyone should practice leaving a dog a alone little by little, so that way you create independence for your dog. Dogs that are velcro dogs have so many issues. Start early on their independence.
As a vet tech - we are trained in animal behavior- we are not licensed to train animal.
With aggressive patients I do ask them to come in go into an exam room leave, come in get a weight and leave, bring them in for breakfast in an exam room leave. Exposure is great before hand. 99% of those owners don't take the advice.
Just watched this podcast it was so great. Awesome questions asked and great info by the groomer! Oh and I have one of those very vocal dogs with nail trim which I always remind the groomer. Thank-you both!!
I also had a similar experience with another client whose lab I walked but not her boyfriend's doodle. One time they asked me to pet sit both dogs and I was horrified when I got to see up close how badly pelted, as Liz said, the dog?! My friend told me not even to cut the mats because she was afraid there could be maggots or other types of bugs inside them. When I asked my client about this, she said they couldn't take him to a groomer because of how reactive he was. My friend was a groomer and she said to me that if I could cut his nails, she would attempt to fix him with me alongside and using a muzzle. Because I knew that the dog trusted me, I was able to cut his nails so the next day we put him in my garage with just the 2 of us. It took us over 1-1/2 hours just to remove all the excess hair and that was when we discovered he was a giant schnodle - we had absolutely no idea what kind of dog he was before that.
How can someone not know their dog is in heat? Worrying. Great chat, thank you both.
29 years grooming and it went from every 4-8 weeks to now people have no money and theyre pushing dogs grooms out 4 to 6 months biggest issue is people think dogs dont need their nails and ears done regularly (this is not grooming THIS IS HOME MAINTENANCE ) DOGS NAILS SHOULD BE DONE AT HOME EVERY OTHER WEEK REGARDLESS OF GROOMING SCHEDULE.
Next issue is skin allergies vets have no behavioral training they also have little to no nutritional training. Seeing a thousand dogs a week 80% of the dogs have some sort of allergies which stems back to the dogs diet. Dont count on your vet for diet, use a clinical pet Nutritionist, dont count on your vet for training use a behaviorist, dont cut your dogs hair use a groomer, and finally what the vet is used for yearly bloodwork and emergencies.

I am closer to retirement and my dream is to open a small Pet Spa Salon with grooming and everything that has to do with pet's well-being. From water therapy, homemade natural foods, massage therapy, etc. Just giving them the most wonderful and best experience possible. I started my learning and will be taking a full-certified program. I already started with my dogs and I just love it. Thank you for all the great work you both do!

The best thing ever is when you get a doubled coated dog in, owner requests a shave because the dog is sooo hot... and then you have to explain that hes morbidly obese, can barely walk and his coat is severely impacted.
Very hard when you have some clients who think you have no boundaries or rights? This past week I received a text at 1:45 a.m. to walk the client's dogs the next day. I only noticed it because I woke up to go to the bathroom. Of course I did not reply and then she had to text me a second time that morning.
PSA. For dogs, of any breed, that have that behavior 'light switch" I have discovered, as a current groomer and former vet tech, look at Dr Jean Dodds information about aberrant behavior and hypothyroidism. I have advocated for many of these dogs. You can use your best methods and if there is an underlying medical condition, nothing will work as well as resolving that.
My 8 year old dane was just diagnosed with wobblers and was put on 600mg gabapentin. What would you recommend. Please help. I really trust you. ❤🙏

This was very educational. I have a Belgium mal/Shephard mix. Im going to search what grooming is needed. She’s pretty active so her nails are kept trimmed by the pavement, but I’m curious on how often it’s recommended to barge her and what shampoo I should be using. I’m guilty of using human shampoo and conditioner. Hehe…
I know it's been a while since you've posted this comment, but I came across this and thought I'd chime in! If it's a longer coated dog (like a Shep coat), I'd recommend every 8-10 weeks for a good deshed. If it's a smoother coat (like a mal) every 12 weeks is a pretty good schedule. The deshed is going to be the primary thing that you should ask for.
At the salon, we do 2 shampoos and a conditioner, but at home, a shampoo and conditioner is enough. I'd recommend a cleansing or deshedding shampoo and a good quality deshedding conditioner! Be sure they are dog safe and follow the instructions on the bottle.
Do you have any recommendations for a shampoo and conditioner that you like to use?
My dog daycare mentioned to me that my dog nibbled on their legs to get affection… I was like 😮 he has never done that with me and she brushed it off like it was fine… I really don’t want my dog nibbling on people, especially in demand of something. How do I explain that they need to be better about not allowing that

One of my chickens just starts to look so run down and dull - and then you come home to find a huge pile of feathers and think she's been attacked by a dog or something. But nope - she's just dropped all of her feathers at once after her new ones have come in. Gets me every time!

I used to trim nails for goats and guinea pigs and ferrets at my shop, as well as the usual dog and cat clients 😂
Love the lifestyle training term. I did what was called “good manners” courses when training my golden. It included knowing how to lay down calm & quiet under a table at a cafe. How to wait out the front of a store quietly (one elderly gentlemen & his enormous rescue dog _blitzed_ it. We looked in wonderment before he sheepishly confessed _Everyday he waits for me out the front of the corner shop. I buy the paper & a single dimsim for him_ 😬. 😂😂
We would practice vet exams on them. wearing gloves, checking their teeth (by saying ‘cheese’ 😂) , their ears & feet checked & felt all through their toes.
Then there was politely greeting other dogs, on and off lead.
The command for _chill out_ so the dog knows when it’s quiet time.
We’d also wear crazy masks (who could have foreseen Covid?! So handy, the masks weren’t scary at all). Opening umbrellas. Wheelchairs, prams, walkers, walking sticks.
All the everyday things your dog needs to be okay with.
I loved this so much, especially what Liz said about 1. Groomers knowing their boundaries 2. Networking & ifs importance so that 3. You feel empowered to assert your boundaries & can refer a dog on without feeling like you’ve failed. But 4. Recognising it’s merely aligning the right dog with the right groomer/vet/etc
**TW** There was a groomer shop here in Brazil that pushed the poor dog so far that it DIED on the table. So so sad. There was a video of it and you can see the poor thing going crazy and then it just collapsed, and the girls kept handling it (i think it was nail clipping).. 😢😢😢
I hate that doodle breeders don’t tell their buyers that they are high maintenance for grooming!!!
I have always wanted to know how groomers feel about vaccinations. I personally dont like to over vacinate so im always concerned about how a groomer would feel if I was honest and said, I only like to vaccinate when absolutely necessary. That is i have already gotten the required shots bit the yearly rabies is concerning for me.
I got a puppy for my birthday a year ago and took him into a bigchain grooming/pet store ! He's no little foo foo dog but very good with people ! As soon as we got there he ran to one of the groomers immediately so she was his girl ! After 4 months she left the big chain store and in fact all the groomers walked out the day the store let her go ! Come to find-out she had worked there for 3+ yrs and wanted to go for her groomers license but the store kept putting it off for yrs and when it came time that the store had to allow her to take the test by law they canned her !!! She got picked up by a local shop and all of her clients followed her as she is just that good !!! After 4 months the new shop owner said she was closing just before her date to go take her test !!!
I wish the law would allow her to go take her test but she has to be working for a shop for at least 3 months & have 4 yrs of real world experience as she does but as these other groomers use her to rake up cash from her customers she brings then let her go !
This is so wrong it isnt funny , today my guy is 95+ pounds and other groomers refuse to bathe him and many shops wont even let us in the door !!! Which if you met my guy you would find he is a very nice dog once you get past his size !!! But now i wait to find where she will ve working next she he can have his time with her again!!!
My question is : do all licensed groomers do this to other people trying to get their license also ???
Most places don't even require a license, that's only a requirement in a few places. That being said, I wouldn't be surprised at all. Some shop owners don't even know ow anything about dogs. They just exploit people and pets to make money and it's all about greed for them. She can probably apply to take a test on her own and then open up her own shop, but that's probably super expensive and requires a lot of business savvy that not a lot of people have

Takis I know a middle age couple that is interested in adopting this little girl they have been looking for update on her they live in Germany they need to know is she still in the shelter and available for adoption so could you send back a reply message they don't know how to do messages on videos so iam taking care of that for them they really feel for that little dog and won't to give her a home please reply back

I disagree with the comments about everyone qho l9ves animals in the industry will be fear free..
I've worked in salons where they scream at the dogs, pick them up in the air, shake them saying stop it, pin them into the wall and more- they were a certified dog groomer and did beautiful work..I couldn't groom there anymore and bought a grooming trailer and started grooming myself instead..
I didn't really know "fear free" was a real term, and you can even get certified..
I have just learned through watching others groom and grooming myself.. Doing dogs kennel free and one one playing peaceful music, moving slowly and being gentle, talking kindly and stopping and giving breaks when needed just makes a happier groom dog and a safer groom dog!
I don't want them terrified of me!
I've gentled very aggressive dogs around after a few appointments..
I couldn't even touch their heads. They were so face aggressive! Just through those methods!

She wanted to turn it into a new business, re-structure and if you lookup the info a new business name was formed and LLC and if you do your research as i have and intend to hold the company accoutable for EACH AND EVERY VIOLATION that they perform for as LONG as they are in business youll see the entire reason for this podcast and the " rebrand " was a ploy for MONEY

Im a straight white dog groomer( not too many out there in the midwest) im the pussy that wants to help doggys without having to see them get hurt... also she says if doggy has biting issues she won't try... been in the buisness 15 years! Its rare tonturn a doggy away ( and i do not use muzzles..cones only)
