Ben Hogan's "Little Known" Golf Tip Takes Your Swing to the Next Level

  • This "Little-Known" Ben Hogan Golf Swing Tip will ELEVATE Your Golf Swing to the Next Level. This golf tip has "gone under the radar" in modern golf instruction but is a VERY IMPORTANT piece of the golf swing that Ben Hogan talked about in the downswing. What Ben Hogan discussed was the notion of "HITTING" the ball hard by AFTER starting the downswing correctly. Ben Hogan stated that IF his downswing properly, he, "Could hit the golf ball as HARD as he wanted" or that he "wished he had 3 right hands" to hit the golf ball with. How Important is that? When is the last time you heard a golf tip that told you to "hit as hard as you wanted" or even "hit hard with 3 dominant hands"?
    This golf tip was largely forgotten because the role of the arms and hitting the ball hard with the dominant arm have been swept aside in modern golf instruction. Modern golf instruction focuses on the body-swing - free flowing arms that seemingly do nothing in the golf swing. There is nothing wrong with using the body to swing - in fact, I am a proponent of using the big muscles to hit the golf ball. The arms, are a big source of power and shouldn't be neglected. Ben Hogan makes it very clear in this golf tip that you have to put yourself in a good position to HIT THE BALL HARD on the downswing.

    I am Tom Saguto, PGA Member and founder of SagutoGolf. Thank you for visiting my instructional page where you can find how to get on the fast track to improving your golfing abilities. Whether you are a seasoned golfing veteran looking for a quick swing tune-up after an on-course emergency, or a beginner just looking to get the most out of your golfing experience, I am here to help you achieve your golfing goals.
    My mission as your swing doctor is simple, to help you maximize your enjoyment in game of golf. Because, let’s face it, golf is a hard game.
    My philosophy is wholly based on the student having a fun, meaningful experience in a frustrating and complicated game where potential lifelong golfers either quit because it is too difficult or that they experience some form of swing-related pain or discomfort. I mitigate these problems by focusing entirely on the student’s needs and goals while teaching a golf swing method that ultimately takes stress off of the common pain areas of the swing.

    Tom is the best. Clear, easy to grasp teaching style. Started practicing S&T after watching Tom, especially his Hogan series videos. Knocked 14 strokes off my best round. That's the truth. Amazing. Right elbow magic, punch through with your right arm. I appreciate that!
      Mr. Hogan delivered phenomenal and timeless instructional value, right?! But there are just so many misconceptions about his swing out there - particularly within the realm of misunderstood or misapplied instruction - that have sadly relegated generations of golfers to the vast abyss of chronic frustration. I'm doing my best here to clear these up one by one and put an end to this madness by taking what Mr. Hogan conveys in the “Five Lessons” book as his "feels", applying it to the reality of what he actually did in his swing, and translating it into something we all can learn well from. Because if we can get Hogan right there are tremendously effective swing keys to be garnered.
      Thanks for your kind words and support!

    Hey Tom,
    Best instruction I've come across. I have and read Hogan's five lessons. Your breakdown on this book is solid. I was a 6.2 index a few years ago. I'm recovering for cancer treatment and have myself turned around in my golf swing by watching to many different videos . You said it all when mentioning using the body swing! Within 15 minutes after watching your video I was hitting a 7 iron into my return net on an average of 88 MPH on my radar. (83-91 MPH) The swing felt very solid and controlled . I will be hitting range balls later today .
    Thanks for your video!

    I read a comment talking about separation, the whole premise behind Ben Hogan swing was it connection, if you're going to learn the Ben Hogan swing , you must learn the windup of the backswing, hands pull the arms, arms pull the shoulders, shoulders pull the hips, hips pull the left foot up. This does not create torque, it creates connection.
    The idea behind the windup, to create the same sequence of events coming down as going back, nothing will repeat under pressure like this type of sequencing.
    Tigers injuries were a result of changing teachers, and trying to implement a more upright swing, this caused the disconnection, and lower back problems.
    When executed properly Ben Hogan's swing is a physical pleasure, if you do not use the sequencing properly, or disregard the sequencing, there's a snap hook or a double cross dead right push waiting for you somewhere in that round.Any kind of "play" or disconnection between the hips and shoulders will result in the ball starting right or hips being behind shoulders resulting in a snap hook.
    Love your videos and instruction,many will advance thier game following your work.

Please keep up the great work as you have a disciple out here vectoring everyone one that will listen to you and your website.

    I realize this is not a new video, but have recently been watching your instructions. For 40 years I have been trying to take the hands and arms out of the swing, especially the right side; I see now how this was a misguided approach. I have been practicing the first move from the top which has improved the "sliding" habit I am accustomed to. Hope you are still doing these video training sessions as I look forward to your helping me with other fine tuning. Thank You and God Bless.

      Thank you, Doug! It all depends on the individual - some may take the hands/arms out of it and play well. Others may benefit from HITTING. Either way can work for you. Hogan and I share a similar feeling of wanting to HIT. I know others who do it the opposite way as well.

    My iron striking today was so off for about 6 holes, I really tried to get the weight forward but nothing worked...Then I remembered your exaggerating it, by bending the left knee and head to the left and left shoulder pointing at the ball then hey presto beautiful straight and long irons again. The Stack & Tilt swing is a proven body-friendly method. For me personally this has been further supported by the fact that the majority of my students are in their 60's, 70's, and 80's - i.e.: a smorgasbord of chronic ailments, physical limitations, back surgeries, and joint replacements - and they are overwhelmingly elated to experience the dramatic pain-free game improvement and resulting enjoyment that this swing affords them.

    • @SagutoGolf
      @SagutoGolf  Před 3 lety

      I'm glad to know that you're enjoying my Hogan Series, Dan. I suppose that lateral move might be a component of what they refer to as "separation" in other swing instruction, but Stack & Tilt is very much a centered, connected swing so that term doesn't really apply here.
      Thanks!
      Tom

    • @SagutoGolf
      @SagutoGolf  Před 3 lety +2

      PS: An afterthought about the concept of separation: This conjures up notions of movements that are alleged to create "torque" by building up resistance between muscle groups , joints, and tendons, and then releasing it - i.e.: "snapping the rubberband", the "X-Factor", back pain, hip pain, knee pain, Tiger's numerous surgeries etc. This is definitely not a concept taught here in our body-friendly method that combines physics and geometry to create effortless power!!

    Okay...You are killin' me Tom. I have to admit it. When I first saw your CZcams Channel I may have stopped and watched a bit just to see the goofiness and what I perceived as "awkward" swing that works for "him". Then I stopped and actually watched and listened. Tom. Tom. Tom...You have made a convert and a fan. I have been actually studying your videos for the last couple of weeks with a more serious, studious tone. What you do works. It looks "different" than what others are teaching but it absolutely works. Just when I thought I had my swing down (but inconsistent), I changed because inconsistency is not what I want. I want straight, consistent shots. I have found that with your method. I just got back from the range and I used your style to see what would happen. I have never hit the ball straighter and with more consistency (when I keep my arms in and don't try to overpower the ball). I am definitely not there yet as I could only really feel a good compression in about half of my shots. The other half were weak but straight. My point is, I have a method now that is surefire and will improve in power with more practice. I am sore in a few places where I was not previously but I think that is because I woke some muscles up that were dormant with my previous 2 plane style attempts. Tom. Please accept my apologies for skipping through and not taking you seriously. You are the "real deal" and I wish you had clinics on the west coast where I live. I would attend and my son, a beginning golfer, would also. You are a true professional and I thank you so very much.

      I'm very glad that you had the wherewithal to stick it out with my "different style" of instruction until it finally began to resonate!! This is not some type of swing sorcery or dark arts going on here - it really *_ DOES_* work for anyone and everyone who wishes to embrace the process and patiently put in the necessary time and effort. That's because the method is rooted in the unchanging principles of physics and geometry while remaining compassionate to our human physiology. It all adds up to long-term body-friendly enjoyment of this game we all love!
      So, anyway....apology fully accepted, LOL!

    Tom.. as always, I love your teaching. These positions are important. However, modern tech (3D motion capture) has proven where speed really comes from. All top pros have a distinct advantage over most amateurs and that is speed from the top to left arm parallel is quite a bit faster than an amateur swing (like 6-8 miles an hour of hand speed), which translates into way more speed at the bottom. If you think about it logically, if you wait until toward the bottom of the swing to create power, there just isn't enough time to ramp up that speed to tour levels. You have that speed in your swing and you can see it on video when the club reacts to your quick but smooth transition. People often think that is swinging from the top, actually swinging from the top is early extension or early release. I mean this as an add to, not criticism. Thanks man... your the best.

    Great video!! But a point of clarification is that Ben Hogan was actually left hand dominant but he played right handed. That is why his “3 right hand” comment was so instructive as far as where he felt his power was coming from, not his left dominant side.

    After the previous Ben/Tom episode, I came to understand the power generated by trail arm. Even though I'm a natural lefty, I found the power! Lefty (Mickelson) also golf's opposite handed. But I heard him talk about the power generated by the trail arm. Having a dominant lead arm doesnt hurt either if I keep it straight.

    • @Golf36
      @Golf36 Před 3 lety

      Tom, do you think keeping the trail arm close to body and doing a proper hip turn on backswing, automatically causes the proper sequence toward the target? (Causing butt head of club on string pulled by hip bump?)

    • @SagutoGolf
      @SagutoGolf  Před 3 lety +1

      Hey Tom - For those who already have that lateral hip slide working for them keeping the trail arm connected like Mr. Hogan can put the downswing on autopilot so you can then deliver the club with WRATH. Unfortunately, many golfers don't have that move sufficiently ingrained; as such their hip rotation takes over and brings the club across the ball from the outside regardless of how connected the trail arm is. So if you're among the fortunate ones, then more power to you....quite literally!!
      Cheers!

    Hogan tips working really well. I am hitting all my clubs straight. However, my pro corrected 2 issues in my swing: overpointing my left shoulder at the ball creating too much tilt and my too fast tempo. Now its 1 2 3 and then 4 downswing. Much better!

  • @brantbrice2551
    @brantbrice2551 Před 2 lety

    In case the hip doesn't jive with someone, the alternate swing thought instead of thinking left hip forward is rear shoulder down first which amazingly pushes the lead hip forward as well. Either does the same thing and it WORKS!!! Great video.

    • @SagutoGolf
      @SagutoGolf  Před 2 lety +1

      Correct. There is no magic elixir here - no shortcuts, no way for me to climb into someone’s physiological and psychological uniqueness and translate my personal swing feels, thoughts, or triggers into theirs. I can teach folks what the correct motions and prescribed positions are, simplify them, demonstrate their proper execution, and where possible offer various options or ”feels” for accomplishing the same desired result, but by design it must ultimately come down to each individual golfer to interpret, incorporate, ingrain and, basically, “figure it out” if they are truly going to take ownership of THEIR swing!

    Hi Tom - Great video(s). BTW - Ben Hogan was LEFT hand dominant which is why he wished he had 3 right hands at the bottom of the downswing. He switched from LH to RH golfer as a kiddo.

      I'm glad you are enjoying the episodes, Rob!
      As for Mr. Hogan's dominant hand, here's an excerpt from a 1987 Golf Magazine interview with Mr. Hogan:
      GOLF: You were a natural left-hander who took up the game right-handed, weren’t you?
      HOGAN: No, that’s one of those things that’s always been written, but it’s an absolute myth. The truth is, the first golf club I owned was an old left-handed, wooden-shafted, rib-faced mashie that a fellow gave me, and that’s the club I was weaned on. During the mornings we caddies would bang the ball up and down the practice field until the members arrived and it was time to go to work. So I did all that formative practice left-handed. But I’m a natural right-hander.
      Cheers!

      Have you considered enrolling in the online school and taking your learning - and your game - to the next level? That's where - in addition to detailed lessons and drills that take you through the entire swing step-by-step from setup to finish - you'll find diagnostic tools for identifying and resolving swing and ball flight issues when they arise as well as all my short game instruction, plus advanced level courses on shot shaping and power/distance. So many folks across the globe - including many seasoned, low-handicap, competitive players - are now enjoying the best golf of their lives as a result. No worries about not living closer as it would not matter since I have phased out in-person instruction so I can further dedicate my efforts in support of the online school. I will, however, continue the V1 Swing Video Analysis lessons as they are instrumental to the progress of my school's members, and these can be done for anyone from anywhere across the globe, school member or not. This enables me to put my eyes on your swing and offer some very specific observations and corrective action plans if applicable. The process involves downloading the free V1 app and then submitting two videos to me through the app - one down-the-line (captured from your stance line, not the target line) and the other face-on. You'll find more information about the V1 Analysis halfway down this page on the Saguto.Golf site: saguto.golf/p/sagutogolf

    I've read that Ben Hogan's dominant hand was his left causing his early penchant to hook the ball. I'm also left handed and golf naturally right handed. I can hit both left or right handed. Overwhelmingly better coordinated from the right side. I have always moved through the hitting zone with both hands. My left hand dominates. So, I love your videos and this one makes me question the dominant hand concept since Ben was left handed.

    I figured out the secrets to Ben's swing a while ago you are right on with everything except a secret I learned about his grip no one has figured it yet but it allows the bowing of the wrists through impact I hit the ball with a force that isn't really a fade it's a straight ball that releases like a draw but its action is like a fade with a lot of roll after it landsits a solid straight release of the power generated because of the way the club face stays dead straight through impact

    In his book Five Lessons he says he starts the down swing with his hips he then says he hits with his upper body as hard as he can. The weight shift is so you can pivot on your front leg.

    • @SagutoGolf
      @SagutoGolf  Před 2 lety

      Yep - as Mr. Hogan said, as long as he started the downswing correctly with the lower body he wished he had three right hands to hit the ball.

    As I go deeper and deeper into the rabbit hole, I'm realizing one MAJOR thing that makes it all easy.
    USE YOUR RIGHT ARM AND BE FIRM WITH IT. Although. I did try going really loose and using the interior parts of my fingers only. It was very surprising with the distance I'd gain, but sadly the accuracy dips a bit due to the nature of the club being "loose". Anything in the rough, good luck being loose. Never ending thanks to you for showing me Ben Hogan.

    • @NonnyStrikes
      @NonnyStrikes Před 3 lety +1

      The levy action I'm talking about with the looser grip with interiors, has to gradually work the body into it and being stable is beyond important. Too many variables, but it does feel amazing.

    • @SagutoGolf
      @SagutoGolf  Před 3 lety +1

      There is a law of diminishing returns applicable to "looseness", Johnny. I find that I do best when I can keep my forearms feeling "soft" while maintaining a secure attachment to the club with my grip.
      Thanks!
