    At the risk of sounding cliché... I took this drill/thought to the course today... warmed up with a Medicus 5-iron, which engrains pretty much this exact feel... and proceeded to play my best round of the last several years (76!) I even reached a par 5 in 2 that I haven't done so in... I can't remember when.

    Tom I’ve watched a lot of your videos and have been working on things but still was not consistent and felt like I was not hitting it as far as I know I can. This video did it. The shoulder low back and through I was hitting lasers, great stuff.

    This is amazing! I played some in high school but haven’t played for about 10+ years. I put in a couple range practice sessions over a few weeks and was slicing everything, chunking balls, thinning, miss hits on the toe. I bought a velvet mat to practice and see visual feed back for my striking to try and fix some issues. My contact area was getting better yesterday but still would have been a toe hit. I found your channel this morning and watched a few videos and this one. Implementing the mental queues and technique with shoulder rotation both directions, head stable, arm straight and weight forward. I hit the mat perfectly centered face and correct contact area. I still mess up some swings but the good swings almost feel natural when they happen. Can’t wait to try some range practice this weekend and maybe a few holes. I’ve been holding off because I didn’t want to just lose all the balls I paid for.

    So how do i fix the slice? Roll the wrists over: I lose lots of speed. Bow the lead wrist: i contact tue ground 6" behind the ball. My clubface is good on chip and pitch shots but 20 degrees open on full swing. In to out path: push slice. Out to in path: pull slice. My natural swing is very fast. 93 mph wit 7 iron but im hitting the ball with the back of my lead hand pointing 90 degrees to target line. Hiw do i fix the slice without losing tons of power or making horrible contact? Ive tried strong grip before...Low hooks and bash the ground similar to bowing wrist.

    Great drill and definitely helps maintain that connection. Hitting all irons much better when doing this drill and focusing on it when hitting. Only issue was with driver I seemed to frequently get a blocked shot (great hit that soars and goes dead straight but dead right)? Am I keeping that elbow in too much? Didn't seem to happen with my 3 or 4 iron (which I hit GREAT!)?

    • @SagutoGolf
      @SagutoGolf Před 8 hodinami

      Hi Guerino, Yes. In fact, it is essentially the same swing with every club; just some minor setup differences and naturally occurring shaft plane changes as we graduate up in club length from short irons to woods. To demonstrate, you'll find towards the end of this episode some practice range footage of me hitting a 7 iron, 3 wood, and driver: czcams.com/video/o0xscMyN3v8/video.html Here is a link to my FREE mini course “The Top 3 Things You Need to Be a Great Ball Striker” where you can learn some aspects of the system I teach in a more structured manner: go.saguto.golf/ This will provide a nice foundational understanding of the swing keys that will ultimately get you mashing the ball through your entire bag. This video explains why I’ve been hooking the heck out of the ball when following your swing advice. Been taking things one at a time. Weight left. Straight lead arm (tough to do). Handle of club slightly ahead of clubhead. Right elbow tucked in. Result = hook and pull hook. Now while it was fun at first…. Pretty novel to have the ball go consistently left. But as Travino said, “you can talk to a fade, but a hook won’t listen.” I will put this info to work and let you know…

      This is actually a rather common consequence of golf swing improvement, Tim, and I see it all the time! In other words, if your path was previously too steep and you were making compensations to prevent the ball from slicing off the planet - such as a very strong grip or setting up with a closed face - then those compensations could certainly result in a hook if you have successfully corrected your path (a "good problem" 😎). I'm glad to know that this grip video clicked with you, and I hope your adjustments in that regard are successful at reining in those hooks! Tom PS: If you've not already joined, have you considered enrolling in the online school and taking your learning - and your game - to the next level? • @SagutoGolf
      @SagutoGolf Před 9 hodinami

      Thanks Steven - I appreciate that. And your paraphrasing of Mr. Nicklaus is rather interesting since here was his quote on weight shift: "I don't believe in a lateral shift," says Nicklaus. "Of course not. I believe in staying on the ball." Asked what he thinks about teachers who advocate a weight shift, he answers, "They don't know how to play." Now, there is certainly an allowance for a transfer of “pressure” into the trail side. After all, we are moving the mass of the arms and club back and around us during the takeaway and backswing. Some like to sense the dynamic pressure shifts; others prefer the feel of a gradual increasing of weight load into the lead leg from the start. However, in either scenario the key here is that we do not allow our mass - and thereby our swing center and low point - to drift back at any point. While there are certainly videos on my channel that address this topic, a better option would be my FREE mini course “The Top 3 Things You Need to Be a Great Ball Striker”: go.saguto.golf/ It's a great way to gain a fundamental understanding of this system as well as an introduction to the instruction style that has thousands of men and women from across the globe - including many accomplished, low-handicap, competitive players and spanning all age ranges from junior to super-senior - enjoying the best golf of their lives: saguto.golf/p/sagutogolfreviews Tom

    More thinking outloud from me: 2things. Micro-hesitations. So swing thoughts cause micro-hesitations and disturb the rhythm of my swing. Even a single swing thought can do this. So I'm working on maintaining rhythm regardless of the adjustment I've added. I've found that I can't test-out a good tip or swing thought if I don't run it through my swing with a good rhythm. If I don't test a good tip using a good rhythm I'll never know if it's working or not. So eliminating micro-hesitations. 2nd, I've never seen Tom use the Hogan waggle before his takeaway. Hogan didn't insist on it, but I'm curious, what is the trigger that starts Tom's takeaway.

    • @SagutoGolf
      @SagutoGolf Před 9 hodinami

      With regard to rhythm, there are at least a couple of things at play: 1) Discovering and dialing in our ideal swing tempo, and 2) Feeling that transition - or the change in direction - so we don't rush our downswing from the top and thereby lose our sequencing (a very common affliction within the amateur golfing realm). Our perfect tempo/rhythm - which is unique to each of us individually - enables us to gather and unload the various components in proper order for seemingly effortless, powerful ball striking bliss. My own personal "feels" are not relevant to you because they are unique to me. 😎 Beyond that, they do change quite regularly as I'm always thinking about new possibilities for my lesson content. (Although as long as my setup is good and I've pre-established the necessary connections, I can trust that no matter my "trigger du jour", it's going to get me moving properly into the takeaway and backswing.) This is why I do my best to convey multiple feels or thoughts throughout the swing wherever possible. We're all different physiologically and psychologically, and something that resonates effectively with one golfer may not necessarily work for another. However, no matter the variety of suggested feels/thoughts offered for a particular element of the swing, they are all directed at getting different golfers to achieve the desired positions, motions, and ball striking results. That is one reason why the comprehensive, step-by-step, position-by-position learning platform of my online school is so effective, and as such I strongly recommend it to anyone who truly wishes to get on the proper path towards owning this swing as it will make for a far more efficient and enjoyable learning process rather than haphazardly trying to piece things together through my CZcams content. That’s the underlying genius of using the Vardon grip properly, something I realized a decade ago. It’s in the way it forces the forearms to twist in against each other and the arm straight if gripped in the air with bent elbows. Hogan got that wrong in his book- the hand and arms should feel like bending a branch down at the ball, both hand rotating inward as the arms straighten, not opposed directions wringing towel. At address the hands work against each other and as the backswing starts because how the pad trail hand is positioned over the lead thumb in the Vardon grip the trail wrist is FORCED into maxed out extension, which for most is 45°. Maxing up extension of the wrist EARLY in the backswing is what will force the trail elbow down like a server picking up a tray setting up the LEVERAGE needed to control the direction the club head tries to steer the mass of the lead arm it is pulling straight at that point in the backswing. This cause and effect is seen if you swing the club with just one arm, lead then trail. A lot of power can be generated by swinging with the lead arm alone but it is difficult to keep it “Connected” and under control. If swung in just the trail arm you can be more accurate hitting balls that way because of the leverage maxing out extension and forcing the arm into elbow down external rotation creates, but not as much power as lead arm only. Moving the mass of the lead arm pulls the club down, the leverage created by hinging the trail one controls the path automatically IF the trail arm hinges correctly, which the Vardon grip forces it to do without needing to think about it! This drill is great for reminding the conscious brain how the trail arm should fold to control the path of the lead one-like a waiter lifting a tray but bent forward. Try gripping the club in the air with elbows bent neutral hands like praying 🙏🏼 but with the face of the club closed 45° \ then rotate bring it square behind ball. You will be amazed at the counter-torque it creates between forearms and hands and how it will make it physically impossible to get the face of the club open enough to slice the ball because of the way it maxes out extension of the trail wrist through impact.

      This is more of a positional demonstration as opposed to what Mr. Hogan - or any top player, for that matter - might actually be feeling in their swing, Blake. I don't understand what you are referring to as not being "too true", Thomas. 🤔 It is essentially the same swing with every club; just some minor setup differences and naturally occurring shaft plane changes as we graduate up in club length from short irons to woods. I think your onto something with that drill…too many people try to hit it with a swing that is too upright and so the swing “digs” into the ground..plus they are trying to emulate a pendulum golf swing which seems practical on paper but is inconsistent in real life..

    • @SagutoGolf
      @SagutoGolf Před 14 hodinami

      I'm glad to know that this lesson and drill resonated with you, Joel, and your comment is spot on! The swing is a tilted circle (or arc, if we wish to get technical), the circumference of which extends from the ball to above and behind our shoulders. As such, if we are going to remain on that circle/arc it requires the hands and club to take a slightly inward path - not a disconnected handsy snatch or roll to the inside - just a natural tracing of the outer rim or circumference. The feeling of "straight back" can easily pull the golfer off of that preestablished geometry right from the start, and from there precise compensatory actions are necessary if there is any hope of returning the clubface to the ball on the proper path time after time. So rather than have to rely on "dropping it in the slot" the exact amount each and every swing, why not just put in the slot from the start and just keep it there?! We create depth in this swing, and that enables us to fully engage the shoulders and harness the tremendous power of swinging on an inclined arc courtesy of the seemingly effortless force known as "angular momentum" - where physics and geometry collide. While I certainly have other lesson videos that address this topic, a better option would be my FREE mini course “The Top 3 Things You Need to Be a Great Ball Striker”: go.saguto.golf/ It's a great way to gain a fundamental understanding of this system as well as an introduction to the instruction style that has thousands of men and women from across the globe - including many accomplished, low-handicap, competitive players and spanning all age ranges from junior to super-senior - enjoying the best golf of their lives: saguto.golf/p/sagutogolfreviews Thanks for your message and validating remarks! • @SagutoGolf
      @SagutoGolf Před 14 hodinami

      I was using JumboMax Ultralite grips in extra-large for much of 2022 and the first part of 2023. I had wanted to give them a try for a few reasons, including the fact that DeChambeau uses them and we share similar swing philosophies. I personally liked the feel as well as how they helped to keep my hands quiet through the zone. Now, having said that, I purchased a new set of PXG's in the spring of 2023, and since they don't carry the Jumbo's in-house I went with their largest available grip, which is a midsize. I absolutely love the clubs, and I'm putting the factory grips through the playing test before deciding whether or not to have them regripped. There are no issues with the Jumbos and I still really like the way they feel; that's just where I'm at presently. The Jumbos are not necessarily for everyone - and my fingers are a bit longer than average - so I routinely tell folks to "try before you buy." However, having a properly sized grip that feels both comfortable and secure is critically important as it is our only connection to the object that is going to deliver us blissful joy or deep anguish, yet it is perhaps also the most overlooked equipment fitting component in golf. Okay easy. Back elbow in, lead arm straight, swivel don't sway, shoulder rotation, don't break wrists early, and keep everything on a circle. Easy to have a simple swing thought with all that going on.

    • @SagutoGolf
      @SagutoGolf Před 14 hodinami

      Golf is indeed a very difficult sport. But if we can simplify the swing so as not to rely on timing and/or exceptional hand-eye coordination - and we can - then we will be able to achieve consistently great results without having to continuously work so hard. Much of what you mention is setup related, and as such if we nail that the all we need is a trigger to properly set the swing in motion. So, if we pre-establish the connections properly at address and have a foundational base that facilitates a full centered turn without restriction, then once we've ingrained the correct actions through sequential drilling and repetition we can entrust the motion to the big muscles and allow the arms, wrists, hands, and club to simply go along for the ride and respond accordingly as if on autopilot. The power accumulators - including the proper arm, wrist, and hand action - will then naturally load and fire with no contrived manipulations or precise timing necessary, thereby returning the face to the position pre-established at address. It's called "giving up control to gain control", and it's the formula for consistently blissful ball striking and seemingly effortless power.

    Tom, I would like to see what you see at setup. If you had a go-pro on your head. Like, do you see your toes behind your hands or in front and where is the ball with say a 9 iron. What does the shaft lean look like from your eyes?

    • @SagutoGolf
      @SagutoGolf Před 14 hodinami

      Well, let me first share some setup keys for this swing system with you: We should feel evenly balanced between heel and toe in both feet. This balance is achieved by first setting our knees over the toes (or at least over the toe end of our shoelaces) to activate the ground connection, and then pushing our butt out to incline the hips and chest so that a relationship with the ball is established. The arms hang down naturally from the shoulders with all clubs except the driver, for which we push them out an inch or so to encourage more of the around-the-body motion needed for that lengthy shaft. We address the ball stacked shoulders over hips over knees with our weight balanced 50/50. We then simply bump our hips one inch towards the target while keeping everything else in place. This presets a little more weight forward while retaining the stacked relationship. Both feet are flared outward approximately 10-20 degrees, with the knees similarly angled outward. This orientation facilitates a stress-free, flowing motion back and through, resulting in a very body-friendly, consistent, powerful swing. As for ball position, while this system affords you some leeway, in general once my students and members show some level of proficiency with the swing I suggest that they migrate to a stock ball position that is in the middle of the stance for short irons, two balls inside the lead heel for middle irons, and creeping more forward for the longer clubs - the farthest forward being even with the inside of the lead heel for the driver (with the stance width increasing as we move from shorter to longer clubs). From there they can make incremental tweaks to see how different positions affect impact quality and shot shape. (By the way, I strongly suggest using alignment sticks when monitoring ball position - one on the foot line, a second one parallel to the first to mark the target line, and a third perpendicular to these to show ball position - as our side-on view from above tends to skew our perspective of the actual location of the ball relative to our stance.) As for hand position, it remains consistent - even with the inside of your lead thigh - no matter which club you are hitting. Additionally, the lead arm and club shaft should form a straight line from the face-on view, giving your setup a lowercase "y" look. Now, having shared all that, would you like to learn some key aspects of the swing I teach in a more structured manner? Doesn’t forward tilt cause reverse pivot??

    • @SagutoGolf
      @SagutoGolf Před 15 hodinami

      No - not at all! I know it sounds like a strange concept to those who have only ever subscribed to a swing model that is based on shifting weight from back to front, but I assure you that this swing is anything but a reverse pivot. Yours is a good question, though, because it represents an often-misconstrued notion and occasional invalid criticism of the Stack & Tilt swing system I teach, and as such I always appreciate the opportunity to respond and clarify. You start with your weight forward (55/45 on the front side; 60/40 for the longer clubs), gradually add more forward weight load into the transition (70/30), 80/20 halfway down, 90/10 impact, and 95/5 finish. There's no "weight shift", and therefore - unless one were to fall backwards - there's nothing to reverse. And the result is a centered, low-maintenance, body-friendly, consistent, and tremendously powerful swing.
