The fact that a comedian is being scrutinized for not telling a story EXACTLY how it happened when there are literal politicians just confidently lying about facts is just absurd to me.

You're an actual moron if you think that's the issue. Comedians make things up all the time for stand-up, but Hasan Minhaj is an activist first, comedian second. He tried to pass off flat-out lies, one of them bordering on harassing to a woman he smeared as racist despite being married to an Indian man, to become successful. Hasan Minhaj is a fraud and any idiots still giving money to him should be mocked just like Jussie Smollett.

The fact that Clare Malone (the author of the hit piece) insinuated that Hasan owed the FBI agent a "heads up", even though his job was to entrap innocent Muslims without any heads up, is both hilariously ironic and outrageous.
Because dont you people realize!!! Americans hate Muslims!! and brown people like the fact we are sitting here still having this discussion despite what happened after 9/11 and what is happening now with Israel attacking Palestinians lmfao like they literally do not see us as humans ofc theyre going to be happy to attack and ruin the career of a muslim brown man. In the early 2000s, a reporter came to my high school to interview students about video games. I happily volunteered, looking forward to share the different genres and stories I'd experienced in the medium. Video games were getting a bad rap at the time, so I thought FINALLY I can share how cool and interesting these games can be. How naive I was. To my dismay, i read the article and found the reporter heavily edited my quotes to promote a piece about video game addiction. Sure, the topic is trivial but it taught me a valuable lesson on how some repooters twist truths and stories to fit their message.
It definitely sounds like this reporter, her editor and the mag were on a mission and were determined to twist whatever Hasan said to fit their pre-formed narrative. The article was designed to be a hit piece. I'm so sorry about all the things that Hasan and his family has had to go through. And I'm so angry about our billionaire-owned government and media that work very hard to keep We The People separate, confused and in our assigned places with their well-shod feet on our necks..
I think I respect him even more. Honestly prior to this “exposé” any reasonable person would expect, and even require, that his standup should be loosely based in reality to not only protect those he talks about, but to enhance the clarity of complicated stories without rambling. He is a comedian doing standup, it is his job to not loose the audience and to evoke laughter. The fact that he is actually as close to reality as he is without endangering his former gf/family is actually super impressive. He’s consistently above and beyond in logic and emotional sway for his genre. If anything the article should have been about how other comedians could take notes.
As a lifetime New Yorker reader, I’m horrified that this happened. And as a comedy lover, it never occurred to me that comedy needed to be literal truth. That’s not how storytelling works! Sincerely hope the very-talented Hasan Minhaj’s reputation and career fully recover.
My immediate thought is of Nick Swardson trying to express that not everything said on stage is true by acting out telling a cheetah to sit to showcase how ridiculous some of the premises he uses are. All to stop people from believing he feeds his cat diarrhea
As an Indian woman, this is the flavor of racism we deal with. Nit-picking, gaslighting to have us meeting unfairly high standards, needing to remain very calm as we lay down rational receipts of facts. I am the first woman in my family to leave the Indian community and work/go to school/live primarily around other races, and this has been the experience. I, too, want America to grow in love and embrace the diversity that makes us who we are.
What's really deceitful about the article is the excerpts that are highlighted in the subtitle and inserts - A reader takes these as accurate encapsulations of the content but instead they are hyperbolic distortions of the details in the story. Defenders of the story point to sections of the story that can be claimed to be more nuanced but what is highlighted is not.
Sorry I’m late to comment on this video but I recently dropped a bag on anthrax on my baby. Also you claimed the parents said they couldn’t have you come over cause they were taking family photos. Then in the audio recording you admit that it was basically a vibe of racism. Then to bolster your claim you showed an email in which this lady said her parents had grown. She probably said that cause you told her that her parents said you weren’t allowed in because you were Indian when in fact it’s because you got the vibe they were racist. lol you didn’t disprove anything. It’s probably another lie. Why would you show up to a girls house who don’t date and get mad when they say they are busy doing family photos?!!! Weird also one last thing. Yo don’t pretend your Indian parents would be cool with you dating some other than Indian. lol your proof is “oh well I felt someway about being able to interrupt a family event so it must be cause I’m black *cough cough* I mean brown but i pretend to be black cause I like hippy-hop and I’m a total sneakerhead y’all feel me?” Dude even if the story about the parents is true which why would I believe you? It’s literally a he said/she said situation and I’m sure that girl feels sorry if that did happen but just cause you sent a couple of friendly emails. What do you expect for her to hold a grudge and call you a lair? She more or less says thanks for the email, hope all is well. Also show the dates in which those email were sent before or after the article… Sorry I got to go I was held up at gun point by a cop for playing basketball, y’all know how it be.

The reporter might just say that their article is based on their own" emotional truth", and the "factual truth is secondary". They've already shown a lack of respect for what Hasan is saying, why wouldn't they steal his own words and diminish them even further?
I’m a Muslim American who personally observed the FBI informant Craig Monteilh (aka “Brother Eric” referenced in Hasan’s special) at my local mosque in Irvine, CA. This was in 2006 and Monteilh was unmistakable - he was a very large bodybuilder who acted suspiciously. In fact, worshippers ultimately reported him to authorities. I coincidentally relocated to Davis, CA (Hasan’s hometown) for college shortly thereafter in 2007. At Davis, I led a Muslim student organization and was intimately involved with the local mosque. As Muslim youth living in a post 9/11 world, we were very concerned about profiling and our safety. For example, I recall when the FBI surveilled Muslim students from Davis while on a Ski retreat in Lake Tahoe. Our mosque was also subject to incidents of vandalism. Hasan’s narrative accurately captures the Muslim American experience with Islamophobia, including the sentiment we felt in the Davis community at the time. For that, he should be lauded, not mocked.

Yeah, it came across as very dismissive to my ear. Edit: I am hesitant to place all of the blame on the reporter, though. The editors are the ones that actually structure a piece. Of course, both could be true: she was uninterested and editorial chopped it up for their slimy framing.
Except it isn’t a tabloid and by right idea expected to hold itself to a higher standard. Also, these interviews are typically recorded and it would be very odd for the participant not to have access to them, they just don’t get to control what happens with them. So, essentially, it’s an example of TNY taking a shot at the wrong person to mess with and not about an occurrence of extraordinary diligence.

I think Hasan said it best himself in the end... there is a different expectation with "funny political commitator" vs. "Comedian"... he may realize now that freely switching between those roles is not a viable option.
This is an incredible example of going about, "No, actually, YOU'RE wrong" without coming across as a petulant child. So many cited sources, examples and recordings, it was direct and specific. From what I understand, his bending of the truth got a real life person he mention in his comedy special to be doxed and harassed. I know Bret Kreisher probably fabricated a lot of his stories but I have yet to hear about anyone being haress for it. Edit: My bad, according to Hasan she was not doxed nor did he lie about the racism.

@@MrCherryzzthe girl wrote an email thanking HM for protecting her and her family's identity. She was never doxxed or harassed because no one knows her true identity. Didn't you watch the video and the emails he presented? Or are you like the New Yorker journalist?
I always found something mildly ridiculous about this whole thing. Are there people out there who expect comedy shows to be full of true stories? I always operated on the assumption that every story was full of artistic license and exaggerations because life doesn't follow a setup-punchline structure.
I don’t think it was necessarily that every single thing needed to be true and that that was why people were mad. I think it was just that the emotional connections he made with the audience was built on shared experiences of racism, and so when it was made to seem like those experiences were falsified, it felt that he "faked" experiences of racism just to get a connection with the audience. It not necessarily that the jokes weren’t true, it was that the stories they were based on weren’t.
Most people understand the artistic license that comes with a comedian's stand-up, and "Comedian bends truth to make funnier jokes" isn't a very compelling story. The journalists from The New Yorker are savvy professionals, and everything in how their piece is written is meant to heavily imply that because of this you can't trust his political work like Patriot Act.
I’m also shocked. Since when do we consider stand up comedy jokes as all facts? While the language used is rhetorical, I’ve always viewed it as something similar to a play, a story, or a song where its clear that the author took inspiration from certain events in their life and created a script to deliver jokes.
Incredible video and so insightful. Happy to see it because I’ve always looked up to you as an artist; the article really threw me for a loop. In a way, it’s a shame the article forced you to spell this out. Kind of like seeing a ‘behind the scenes’ of a fantasy film, and learning a portion of it was green screen or special effects. I think we all understand that there’s a certain amount of tweaking for narrative purposes in storytelling - we just ignore it and consciously ‘buy in’ because that enhances the experience. I think good stories are built on a foundation of truth, and it’s easy to sense when that’s not the case. A true storyteller knows what to manipulate so audiences get the best bang for your buck, entertainment wise, while the purposes of the story remains clear.
I’d like to see a single standup comedian, political or otherwise, to declare publicly that they have never embellished a single story for the purpose of their acts. Now I’d like to hear The New Yorker go on the record that they also never embellished a story or omitted relevant information from any of their articles. 😑

No artist anywhere tells an experience exactly as it happens. Their craft is to tell a good story. Sometimes that means spinning it into a relatable tale. Taking bits and pieces of reality and turn them into something understandable and educational or entertaining.
Yeah, Chris Rock has a bit where he jokes that he writes the punch lines first and then comes up with a story to justify it. The prevalence of comedians halfway through a joke saying "and this is true" implies that a lot of it is false, and probably a lot of the "true" things are false too.
That’s the entire point of arts. That’s what creative license is: an understanding that ART is interpretation, not journalism. Comedy, especially, is a reorganization of expectations.
This is what happens when a person with a real, lived experience of racism has to go through the exhaustion of explaining themselves because the "journalist" has no emotional (and apparently, no educated) understanding of it.

The irony for me is that she accuses Hasan of trying to enhance his career by telling lies. Meanwhile she is the one that clearly is attempting to do that for herself by writing this misleading article.😒 In my opinion you did NOTHING wrong. Keep going and do what you do!🙏🏽💝
"Let's take this brown artist playing the victim card and expose him in a witch hunt, in a crusade we don't tipically wage against, y'know, white artists" They made him suffer racism while probing to prove he hadn't.
Yes, there is nothing similar between stand up comedian jokes that might be made up and a serious article attacking a real person integrity! I didn’t know that standup comedian has to experience all the stories they talk about!
There's a reason that in many stand-up specials comedians are often in the middle of a bit and they turned to the audience and before a major part they say "and this part is 100% true" and then say part of the bit. They do that because it's quite obvious that comedy bits are nuggets of truth with comedic embellishment for the purpose of entertainment and storytelling
Wow this is absolutely incredible and shocking how misleading the reporting has been. My mind has completely changed on this topic. Hasan you have my full support. The New Yorker should be ashamed.
@@blastermaster5009dude, he gives proof against the main, most damning allegations the article makes. The rest of the ‘lies’ were literally him presenting facts in a way that’s fit for a stand up comedy show. None of those mislead people to any serious extent or hurts anyone. Really, the worst thing here is him narrating a story about being confronted by a specific fbi informant, and even then, though the details weren’t factual, the actual incident was.
True, but I'm hoping it becomes a great story in the next stand-up! It's almost too ridiculous to believe that a group proudly reporting on the truth of a comedic stand up special where emotions come first as if it were a bad thing, would do the SAME THING to put emotion first, by twisting the truth! They tried to pain.t him poorly while literally taking the same steps for clicks and to generate buzz. Except unlike Hasan's changes, theirs were clearly meant, or at least, capable, of doing damage!
I miss the Patriot Act ❤ Whether these 3 stories were your truth or not, they have happened to a brown kid in this country. Comedy is storytelling and adding “spice” to real stories; it’s to immerse in a story and laugh
It is ridiculous that you felt you had to apologize. Your show is not an autobiography. Your show is meant as entertainment. Still love & support you, sir! ❤
@@htbostonYou didn't pay "good" attention to the details in the video, did you? Are you proud of how the "girl's" parents treated Hassan? Be rather thankful for him protecting her identity.
Not a public performer, but I give speeches for my work. I absolutely conflate disparate anecdotes together and glue them together with poetic license. It would take 5 times longer to tell all the stories and they would be 1/5th as engaging. Like if a person days "A" on one occasion and "B" another time, and you want to show how "A, and B" is a compelling point, then just tell the story as if they were said in the same occasion! Storytellers do this all the time. As long as you're not changing the essence of what was said by adding or omitting key details or context, then it's just about wrapping the story like a gift so other people can receive it. Hasan, this is an art and I think you are very skilled at it. I'm sorry such a misleading article gained so much traction.
Isn't this also how someone writes a memoir or autobiography that is engaging? If you told all the mundane details of every interaction you've had, a book would be too long to keep anyone's interest.
@@TheBruce571 - You think all the stories that Dave Chappelle says on his specials are true? Sorry dude, but comedians aren't in some amazing club of people that constantly have interesting things happen to them. Life and reality don't work that way. *shrug*
I came here, trying to hear what you have to say for yourself. and im shocked, because I didn't know that the news reports contained this much creative choices. I am really glad that you explained all this, because without it I would not know what happened.
It's so odd to me that anyone takes standup routines as sworn testimony, "fact checks" them, and then tries to take down someone's entire career as if they lied under oath. I always thought the New Yorker had actual journalists.
Meanwhile our congressional overview of a character for the purpose of granting him the highest legal authority of the land for life just "takes his word for it." A white man can just say "I don't recall" while a brown one brings receipts that end up under the rug.
Bc they’ve been trying to silence and take Hasan down for years. It was an opportunity they thought would “cancel” him enough into a corner. I’m so glad he stayed true to himself and now brought his receipts.
This apology is exactly why i was so hoping that Hassan wld be the next host for the Daily Show. Facts, sincerity, humor and intelligence both mental and emotional. Thank you Hassan for showing us what true character and honesty looks like.
I think someone should do an investigation on whether Eddie Murphy's Aunt Bunny actually fell down the stairs for 5 solid minutes at every cookout, if she ever got her shoe back, and how she's living now.
I think comedians should just put a disclaimer before their specials (just like movies that are based on someone's life), saying that some events/timelines/identities have been changed...and some are completely made up to faciliate the joke telling process. I remember the first time I saw a comedian's special and then later saw flashback clips of him working on a particular joke from that special. And most of the details, of the person he was talking about in the joke, had been changed. I was taken aback. I assumed story telling comedians exaggerated for their bits, but I didn't relaize they changed ALL the details in a joke or completely fictionalized entire events, just to get more laughs or emotional investment. But after that, I knew that comedians are just like Hollywood adaptions of documentaries, where they loosley base their movie on the person's life, but fill in wherever they can, to make more money and increase critical acclaim. So I think it would be prudent for comedians to include that disclaimer. (Having said that, I still would have been put off by Minhaj saying he took his child to the hospital when he didn't. Just say the truth, there was powder sent to you, in your family's house. That is enough for us to understand how crazy things had gotten and how scary it must have been, trying to keep your family safe.)
As soon as I heard about that story, I thought, no way are we cancelling Hasan. Everyone knows and expects comics to embellish and re-imagine stories so they hit more effectively in a standup set. That's why comedy is an art form, not a peer-reviewed journal. It infurates me that Hasan didn't get the Daily Show over this because he was absolutely the best. Thank you for this video and I wish you hadn't had to make it. You deserve so much better.
Viacom is notorious for being cheap and difficult to work with. Many report they say "bring your own suits" when on the show. Hasan can probably make more with other projects.
I mean the standup was a bit more than an art form and became political after he brought up things that many young immigrants/ children of immigrants can relate to on a personal level. Yeah I don't care when comics very obviously embellish stories but idk it was disappointing to feel like I felt an emotional response over lies
Honestly he's too good for the daily show. They real watered it down after Jon left. And look what they did to john on Apple, cancelled again for being too truthful. Imagine how long Hasan would've lasted on the daily show.
@@asmaa___ i hear what you are saying, however, is "lies" really an accurate portrayal? these instances were not made up out of whole cloth. these were situations he found himself in in his life, artistically changed and embellished to be more entertaining and affect people on a deeper level. but it's not like he just made it up.
I was rooting for you to be the next host of The Daily Show. This absolute hit piece seems clearly calculated to kill that possibility. Im so sorry you got smeared like this. You are an amazing person, and I wish you all the best in your continuing career.

lets be honest here, nobody expects comedy to the true anymore than people expect marvel movies to be factually acurate. this was clearly someone else who wanted that job getting those "journalists" to pretend that this is issue.
The New Yorker correctly reported that he either embellished or made up entire stories that he passed off as truth at the time. The only dishonesty was Hassan’s.
@@jaimefernandez2624 I guess I don't mind some amount of comedic embellishment, but come on: An activist celebrity standing on stage, detailing traumatic events that recently happened to them and using them to support larger points about geopolitical issues - that's a far cry from a fictional movie.
I can't believe this is even an issue...why should a comedian have to explain what creative license is?! If they weren't allowed to do this, then there would be like 4 comedians in the world, who had all lived such crazy, messed up lives that they'd basically have gone insane by the end of their first special.

you and this whole comment section miss the point: there is a huge difference between making up stories for the sake of comedy and making up stories to make yourself the victim.
I think they just relied 100% on people reading only headlines, because most people that know Hasan know him primarily for his show & political stances. So they'd think he was making up stories/stats rather than just artistically expressing a story during a standup. Atleast, thats how it came off to me when I heard about this from my brother and felt like something was off cause Hasan was always delved the extra bit into each topic to make sure we heard EVERYTHING.
We are in a special moment in the history that we hold comedians to a higher standard than heads of state.

This comment should be the top pinned reply. I wish I could give you a standing applause. How people can take a comedian seriously during an act is mind blowing. Stay Safe and Be Well.

He is a comedian doing standup, it is his job to not loose the audience and to evoke laughter. The fact that he is actually as close to reality as he is without endangering his former gf/family is actually super impressive.

Glad Hassan & his team recorded the entire audio of the interview with the NewYorker; always protect yourself against such tabloids
You’re joking right?
Except it isn’t a tabloid and by right idea expected to hold itself to a higher standard.
Also, these interviews are typically recorded and it would be very odd for the participant not to have access to them, they just don’t get to control what happens with them.
So, essentially, it’s an example of TNY taking a shot at the wrong person to mess with and not about an occurrence of extraordinary diligence.

The "New Yorker" is not a tabloid.
when did fact checking become a thing for stand-up sketches? It's obvious that every stand-up comedian tweaks the details of their stories for comedic effect.
He did not "tweak" he invented stories to get sympathy and play of a real racists racial hatreds to help it grow. People are sick of fake woke cunts demonizing America. And THAT is his career. Making America appear more racist than it is.
Right? The whole setup for most early comedians was a fake wife and family who exist only for the punchline. No one ever cared. But now when they Want to attack someone, suddenly it's a problem. It's a targeted attack.

I always found something mildly ridiculous about this whole thing. Are there people out there who expect comedy shows to be full of true stories? I always operated on the assumption that every story was full of artistic license and exaggerations because life doesn't follow a setup-punchline structure.
when you use real people in your stories, that's the equivalent to doxxing.
True I’m confused! Are all standup comedian stories real or happened to them ?!
I wonder why so many traditional media at the same time attacked a very popular muslin comedian was so viciously ????🤔💭🙄 Coincidence???

Exactly, and then on top of it it’s a perfect illustration for all of us to see how reality is distorted by The Media

This is why he didn’t get the daily show? If that’s true I wholeheartedly believe someone set him up so he wouldn’t get it
Viacom is notorious for being cheap and difficult to work with.
Me too it is so disgusting
Me three! I love how he pulls you into the stories.
I mean we might be able to get jon steward back i would take that over this pos
@@Tolandruth ---Did you really call Hasan Minhaj a PoS after listening to what he said? Or did you come to the comment section to be an edgy, racist edgelord? What the f#ck is wrong with you? Are you a klansman or neo-nazi, or is racism just a hobby for you? The ONLY thing you can object to in this video (if you even watched it) is Hasan Minhaj himself, which means you're being a racist. Just....why?
A great explanation video, He kept all the facts like emails, messages, and recordings.
Hassan, of course we don't know you personally, but you are amazing, we feel the sincerity shining from you...
The media should not distort your wonderful show in such an ugly way, the story is inspiring and hopeful and it is something that must be heard more, so thank you for your bravery.❤
The fact that you would go to these lengths to explain your process to explain your intention speaks to who you are, your integrity and your sense of compassion/responsibility. Comedy is story telling…anyone who appreciates the art understands that elements are sewn together to keep the audience engaged. It’s been done for decades. I’ve seen you live twice and have watched every bit of content you’ve created. Don’t let this rock you. Your voice, your story telling and your education is needed. I hate that this happened.
So true. It breaks my heart both as a parent and a Muslim American citizen . This is shameful tactics by our own government
lets be honest here, nobody expects comedy to the true anymore than people expect marvel movies to be factually acurate. this was clearly someone else who wanted that job getting those "journalists" to pretend that this is issue.
The New Yorker correctly reported that he either embellished or made up entire stories that he passed off as truth at the time. The only dishonesty was Hassan’s.
@deesee6009 that's why he apologized lol
@@jaimefernandez2624 I guess I don't mind some amount of comedic embellishment, but come on: An activist celebrity standing on stage, detailing traumatic events that recently happened to them and using them to support larger points about geopolitical issues - that's a far cry from a fictional movie.
I can't believe this is even an issue...why should a comedian have to explain what creative license is?! If they weren't allowed to do this, then there would be like 4 comedians in the world, who had all lived such crazy, messed up lives that they'd basically have gone insane by the end of their first special.
You took the words right out of my mouth! Ridiculous.
Lying about anthrax threats and playing victim doesn’t help his argument
yea keep listening to this video and like hearing “this is the exact details of the story i lived thru, and then this is what i told so that other ppl could experience those feelings in exactly the way that i did” and that just seems like the job he has? like he’s not a reporter i don’t go to comedy clubs to hear abt the exact events that happened, i go in part to help myself understand realities that i don’t personally experience
@@DeltaV-sayno2CCPit doesn’t sound like he lied to me? it just sounds like he moved some scenes around to mimic the emotions in those that were listening
@@nyahtonks3914 if its a fictional story and making a wider point thats different. When you pitch it as 'this is a true account of what happened to me and my family' and alter the truth, embelish its different. It will be seen as dishonest.
Your work and sincerity bothers them stay strong ;we love even if you were a psycho .you're nice person ❤❤❤❤
This whole fiasco has been so weird to me. I didn't realize that people expected that comedians' stories were 100% accurate, no details changed, to what happened.
Only when they're minorities not following the narrative.
you and this whole comment section miss the point: there is a huge difference between making up stories for the sake of comedy and making up stories to make yourself the victim.
Playing victim card with your fictional stories 😂😂😂
i think you didnt watch the video.... he didnt make up teh story @@kevincastellanos6328
