Spruce Bark Basket

- Hiking through the wilderness I stumbled upon a large spruce tree that had recently been blown over by the wind. I saw it as an opportunity to harvest the bark to craft baskets from.
This video follows the process as I use a knife to create a medium sized spruce bark basket. These types of projects are a lot of fun and yield a great item for use around camp.
Since I started so late in the day, I ran out of time and was unable to attach the reinforcement for the rim. I will finish the basket another day but even without the reinforced rim it's still a functional piece of kit.
I plan to do more spruce bark projects in the future since it's such a great material to work with. God bless!
The knife used in this video is a Helle Sigmund. - Zábava
It never ceases to amaze me how innovative our ancestors were to come up with stuff like this.
Yes. And they were so creative and knowledgeable because they were truly connected to God Almighty the Creator. Subscribed.
im thinking it all comes to trial n' error
Whenever I watch your videos, I know it will be fascinating and time well spent. Thank you.
Thank you!
I had never seen work like this. I think it's a good job to try to do it yourself
I really admire your respect for the nature and trying to minimise your impact on the environment when bushcrafting.
It's good content and I'm here for it!
Love to see the vids 👌 can’t wait to see some more, God bless🙏🏾
God bless you too!
That looks beautiful! You certainly love your natural crafts. Wish they would teach these skills in an outdoor classroom! Thank you for sharing.
That was a very nice project. Cheers and God Bless! ✌️🇨🇦
Thank you for watching! God bless you too!
This is one of the coolest things I've seen on the internet. I'd love to see more projects and stuff like this. Thanks for sharing.
One impressive project. Well done. Appreciate your knowledge and time.
And I thought birch bark was the only useable material for containers! 🤩
Excellent. If you were in need in the back country this would do nicely.👍👌
Very clever ideas there. End result result turned out great 👍
Thank you for watching!
God bless you.
I’d really enjoy hearing you talk about how you learned about what it is you do. Very interesting I’d think.
Riley you are so knowlwledgeable about bushcraft. Especially for your young age. It's a pleasure and a privilege to watch you work. Thanks for sharing.
You make it look easy. Thanks for the video it made it easier to comprehend.
Great work 😅
Unbelievable how much knowledge you have about bushcraft. Great job on the basket
This one is amazing. So simple materials, such a great vibes in the video and incredible result.

Love this highly informative video, thanks so much!
Absolutely amazing! A beautiful job.
Kurk would fit into any era or generation..
awesome!
very impressive! the darn skeeters buzzing around make me uncomfortable just by watching already though.
Yup they're bad this year!
Awesome, and the bark is natural camouflage 👍🏽
Beautiful project 👌
That's so cool I bet it would also make a good pot for a big plant, just gotta make some drainage holes on the bottom
I originally read "spruce bark blanket" and thought "Oh, a spruce bark bivy!"
A great foraging basket all the same - gather a lot of calories and nutrients in that! Have you ever sealed one up with sap to capture rain or carry water? Lots of water in Alberta, so rarely a need for such an item, but a fun project.
I've sealed smaller bark container with spruce pitch before, but nothing of this size. I would like to give it a go at some point. Thanks for watching!
Your craftsmanship is outstanding. I find your pronunciation of template interesting. In the south we pronounce it temp•lit. Thank you!
That is pretty awesome
A very nice project, enjoyed every moment of it. i want to try this on a smaller scale for a container. Thx!
awesome
Awesome!
Great video man. I always learn a lot from you. Cheers!

Thank you for watching!
Brilliant.😁👍🏻
I know its not practical but it would be entertaining to see a set of armor designed in this fashion.
Thanks for putting the time and effort into making this video i will retain and share this knowledge.
That's what I'd like to see! A backpack out of bark!!
Amazing 😮
Bea UUU Tifull Forest Bag ,Better Than Birkin)))).
I love it For Sharing is Caring!
Appreciate!
I just love stuff made by hand with only natural mats.

Thank you for watching. God bless!
Your beard is epic
Haha thank you!
You think if you had a big enough piece of spruce bark like this with this kind of frameless construction that you could make a boat and it'd be sturdy enough to go fishing?
Spruce bark canoes were historically used to travel across water. I think a frame would be necessary in order to maintain the shape and to add structure to the vessel. Without the frame I feel the bark would crack.
Come ON this is the beeeeeeeeeeest!! Where did you learn all of this???
👍
Calentando en fuego 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥 no es más flexible??
Amazing video as always.
Do you think u could put a spruce root handle on the top with some additional support for the rope holes?
I think a handle would be very doable 👍
Gloves would help greatly!
that's a nice looking basket, would like to make one too at some point!
have to admit that the amount of mosquitoes was freaking me out by the end D:
did you bring some repellant or do the mosquitoes not care about you at all? I usually end up having a bunch of them landing on me at the same time, trying to suck me dry during summer...
Thanks for watching! It was a fun project to make.
I wear insect repellant. Between the mosquitoes and biting midges the repellant is almost a necessity.
👍✨💥💐🌟💯
The roots of the spruce can be used for a Cord.
I wonder how well this will age after ten or twenty years?.....or more!
Very interesting .. You must of wanted to make a BB Canoe at one point, or already have ?
Hi sar
Looks amazing and what knife are you using?
Would the bark reconstitute and become more supple if you soak it first?
When it dries it becomes hard like wood. I'm not sure if it would fully rehydrate and become soft again. I'll have to give it a try. Thanks for watching!
✓
How did you tie off the ends.
Would it be possible to waterproof the inside?
Yes, using spruce resin combined with a few other natural materials it would be very doable. I plan to make a waterproof container soon using spruce bark. Stay tuned!
Ever make Bark Bread?
Not yet, nope.
Wondering why you call it a template.
I misspoke. Should've been calling it a pattern. Not a big deal though, I'm sure everyone knew what I was implying.
It's too bad that you didn't harvest any of the wood from the tree. The section under the bark you exposed would be great for multiple woodworking purposes
I plan to go back and harvest the wood. 👍 Thanks for watching!
@@KuskBushcraft Thanks for the reply. I really enjoy your videos. I hated the thought that that tree was not going to be used for something. It was such a magnificent one.
Why did you buy a new knife? Why did you make a bark basket?
“Well… it all started at 4am…”
