Ange Postecoglou has settled into life in the Premier League quickly, remaining undefeated after five games with his Tottenham side playing free flowing and attacking football.
His approach and big personality have immediately won Spurs fans over, who have struggled through some turgid football with previous managers.
The Australian was an unlikely candidate to take over in North London, so just why is Ange proving to be such a good fit for the Premier League?
Alex Barker explains.

Ange has been destroying low blocks for a decade mate. It's his bread and butter. If you employ a low block you better hope you can somehow keep out 30ish shots for 90+ mins.
Yep, kind of bizarre to focus on this as though he's never faced low block teams before.
I'm a tottenham fan and shelffield nearly did it, so we have to be better too
@@user-ry4ci7dt8k Brentford also did it at times and then went for us on the counter. It worked for big parts of the games too.
@@GlassHouse80 First game of the season bro. It takes time for teams to adapt to new tactics. Give it time, the best is yet to come!
that was mostly due to bad finishing from solomon 28 shots with 10 shots on target isn't what you would call struggle@@user-ry4ci7dt8k
Van De Ven and Udogie have been amazing for us, total game changers along with Maddison and a rejuvinated Bissouma.
An injury to any of our 11 and we’re fucked
@@murdadem7024 any of those 4 I’d agree, elsewhere less so but never ideal. Week long breaks between games will help reduce injuries, and we have some players due back in the coming weeks (Gil and Bentancur)
@@iMDN94BENTACUR COMING BACK
@@kururin7 Not until late October/November at best but he is back training on grass
Pretty much our entire 11 minus Richy (hopefully improving) have played fantastically. Romero has played much better than last yr.
Ange’s success isn’t just down to tactics, in fact a much bigger reason why he’s succeeding so far is his personality and the way he treats his players. He has created a good environment for the players both old and new the possibility to thrive
I wouldn’t say much bigger. It’s all important but if he was a good personality trying to play like Conte we wouldn’t be seeing the same results
Glad to hear someone finally speak about some of the individuals in the back line and how importsnt they have been... Udogie, Van De Ven, Romero and Porro are all great technical and press resistant players! Bissouma and Maddison as well, Sarr isn't bad, but Bentancur is better when he's back. Soloman and Kulusevski are also great ball carriers.
Postecoglou is correctly getting flowers for setting the team up this way and it feeds into all their strengths, but people are sleeping on some of the individal talent in the team.
Maddison and Bissouma are getting all the love from neutrals, but Destiny Udogie... he's maybe a bit raw, but this kid is proper special.
Porro is not press resistant against Man utd , when Maddison dropped in Porro went wide that is why Man utd could not press them like they did in the first 30 minutes
@@darrenfearon4288 yeah that's one example of a time he struggled for part of one game. There are other mistakes he's made as well, but I would argue he is generally very good at turning out of trouble and playing the ball forward.
He's probably the least press resistant of the 5 players listed, but one of the most impressive at passing.
sarr leads the premier league for winning the ball in the final 3rd i believe. st like that. *VERY* underrated
@@puskas_ballerpretty sure that’s Udogie?
@@ashtenforde8339 i believe udogie was and maybe still is leading for progressive carries over any defender in the league. not too sure about his ball winning stats
YES MORE ANGE ON TIFO
Imagine mousa dembele in this team too
I still don't understand why he was let go. He was a beast in the middle of the pitch
@@shirshenduroyMousa Dembele was let go because in his last half season at Spurs he was terrible. He physically declined horrendously after playing in a Poch pressing system for years. Couldn’t last the pitch for many minutes until being injured. The Chinese Super League was still a thing then, and they offered a fee for Dembele that was pretty good. Yes he was a baller physically with his dribbling, but he wasn’t a chance creator or an interceptor cdm.
Don't need him.
@@shirshenduroybecause he suffered massive injuries...
Not sure how people missed that..?
@willdeal4367 I've actually read again and the take gets worse every time I read it 🤣
Nice video but you missed a trick. Udogie spent as much time in his attacking penalty area as he did at left back last season for Udinese. As Danny Kelly has said, he’s like a left wing back who plays as a centre forward. So he is comfortable playing advanced and centrally. Similarly, Maddison likes to drop deep to collect the ball and is both comfortable with his back to the goal and good at creating the space and progressively carrying through the line. So plan A is build through Bissouma and if plan A is not on because opposition is committed to shutting down Bissouma, plan B is Maddison drops deep into the inverted wing back and Udogie moves into Maddison’s #10 half-space position. The fact that this rotation is on is crucial. Find me a left back who can also play as a #8/10 in the advanced half space…
requires committed running all game ie supreme fitness all season ..
Zinchenko.
@@OplzITSCreez i didn’t see zinchenko in the forward line once but i saw udogie (and porro btw) in the forward line often

No one talks about Spuds missing Kane.
That in itself is huge.
Kane in this Spurs team would make them title contenders.
Who?
2 additions to our build up, just in case Fullbacks/Bissouma cant beat press both involve Maddison;
1) the CBs will play more direct, and skip opposition midfield by playing through to Maddison in the hole, whom can turn in tight spaces and get away
2) Maddison drops super deep to outnumber the oppisition press which creates space in other areas of the pitch
P.s Alex looks great in a spurs shirt
Porro has succeeded because his passing is so good, far less than his ball carrying. Spot on with Udogie though.
Great video. Love Big Ange. As a Celtic fan gutted he is gone but delighted to see him doing well for Spurs.
He was laughed at joining Celtic. Heads scratched when he joined Spurs. The guy is modern football legend!
Ange is so loveable bro his interviews are as much of a joy to watch as his teams
Alex Barker is an excellent addition to Tifo👏👏
Cracking job from Alex here. Articulated very well.
need destiny to keep flying under the radar he is genuinely a world beater
noticed this too. When porro gets on the ball he immediately turns and beats the presser
This is excellent video. Well done.
Especially with all the Richy saga (and how much more suited to Ange's system would be compared to Kane etc), I'd love to see a piece on the characteristics and who would be the ideal striker for Spurs!!
wow this is very insightful. tyvm tifo!!
This guy really loves waving his hands around
Really great vid Alex. Miss the Euroexpert vids, but congrats on the Tifo job man.
Think you're completely right with your points here. We will need to find different solutions to mid block zonal defenses, which play less into the system's and players' hands. Ange has definitely found solutions to this before. Interested to see what tweaks we make, whether there are slight changes in build up or final third patterns or changes in personnel.
It seems recently that Madders has been dropping deeper to find pockets of space and be the progressive passer needed to move us to the final third in some of these situations so might be a thing to keep an eye on.
Then there's the problem of unlocking the defense once they inevitably drop into a low block situation which is always interesting. So far this has mostly been just having bodies in the box hungrier for the ball ready to pounce when the defense switches off.
Should be a great season if we can somehow stay relatively healthy. COYS
Yeah true PL teams press rly high this is good for teams like tottenham or brighton because they are not to productive when they face a low Block team (ex : brighton vs Aek)
Congrats on the job mr expert!!!
Excellent work.
Great analysis for laymen and non football technical like me!!❤❤❤❤
I like this guys energy and enthusiasm. Makes the content much more enjoyable. Thumbs up my guy
I wish we had someone like jermaine defoe. He would had suited our lineup.
He's just copying Pep mate!
I really like this guy.
Great video. I was at the Sheffield game (stayed til the end!) and we struggled against low block. Compare that with the Burnley game where they were trying to play higher up press. The NLD will be a good test for us, both teams wanting to play.
'struggled'?
Sheffield got absolutely battered😅
We didn't struggle against any low block lol
@@jimmyf1446it was pretty clear spurs were struggling to have someone find space in the low block. Especially in the lead up to the first goal everyone was just crossing into the box with no one inside
You know why they call it the ‘top bin’? Because thats where it needs to go to beat good keepers. Spurs hit multiple shots weakly or straight at the keeper v SU. These guys are ridiculously paid pros and one of them should be able to hit the top bin in 30 odd shots. SU were dominated but chances still need to be taken. Celtic were guilty of similar profligacy. One would expect spurs to be better at finishing over the season given the higher level players (excl Kyogo and one or 2 others) they have.
"You watch Tifo, you're smart" DO NOT ASSUME THAT ABOUT ME
I'm not sure this rings true. Especially comments about Porro and Royal being good when pressed. I think that's definitely still a weak area although Porro has been good from midfield onwards.
The bissouma, Van de Ven and Udogie axis seems much more important in deep build up and Maddison helps out a lot too.
Love that spurs top tho!
Still weird watching videos on my lunch break about Tottenham and it not being about what's wrong 😅
That Derby will be fun
I like the new guy
Lets see how they cope when Maddison's annual time on the sidelines comes around. That will truly be a test of Ange's system.
I think they’ll probably get a player similar or like him in the January window. I’m happy for spurs really(lfc fan) and hope they win against Arsenal lol
optimist mate?
Bentancur would be a decent option to replace him
@@chris.48I’m really happy for Ange and hope he beats Liverpool in their upcoming game lol
@@M4NA5 🤣🤣🤣hell nah. I was gonna say I hope we beat them after they beat arsenal 🤣🤣
Yeah People are saying that let teams play low block against Tottenham then, Tottenham will give the ball to opponents on purpose and win it back when they start to counter attack them. That 2nd goal was perfect example for it, Tottenham pressed up high when Sheffield had the ball and Udogie their fullback won the ball back gave it to Richarlison and then to Kulusevski. Those teams that play low blocks crosses will come from flanks and when you have Maddison Kulusevski and Son crossing the ball with Richarlison, Romero and Van de Ven on the crossing end they will score goals.
Bissouma helps break high presses, Maddison helps break low blocks, and Sarr negates counter attacks in the middle. Spurs have an incredibly balanced midfield.
Looking forward to this weekend! COYG
The Arsenal game will be Ange's big test
Of course he has experience with derbies and can certainly deal with crazy atmospheres, he did coach Celtic after all, however, can Tottenham perform against a competent team?
Will also be interesting to see how a game like against Villa will work out
Emery loves counterattacks while Ange's high pressing leaves the back pretty open, but Villa's defence is very leaky, certainly shaping up to be a high scoring game
All gonna end in heartbreak
EUROEXPERT!! Great addition
took 5 minutes before finally discussing ange team, wth man i got lost
I had to check the title afyer a couple minutes because i thought i clicked on the wrong video 😂
One of the best video from tifo in recent times
According to the subtitles, Postecoglou is "Foster Kill Glue"!!
Ah, breakfast and tifo
great video
I am trying to be cautiously optimistic as a spurs fan stop making me excited after all these videos
This is all great analysis but can someone tell me why there is this shift from passing through the back to carrying the ball?
Rewatch the video! its because everyone is pressing higher and higher and to break that you need ball carriers.
He just explained it. Teams are pressing high & hard to make it more difficult to pass out from the back. The answer to that is to have defensive players who can dribble through the press instead.
Clever guys, deserve a spot on TIFO imo
What have you done with the Bullard
min effort max output
If he's missing another week, time to get his face on milk cartons
They have the skill but lack the fire to win. But we'll see this season.
Huh. I was using the 2-3-2-3 in FM and fifa in the 2010’s.
The real test is on the NLD
What's the external factors boosting their success?
Idk man could’ve just said that the wing backs are progressive dribbles and bissouma is press resistant. But let me know if I missed anything.
My only critque is how much spurs struggled against sheffield this weekend. I understand ange has broken low blocks in the past but last weekend was a concern but hopefully he's learned Richie is the man for the job against a low block
The issue is that Sheffield United basically fouled, time wasted and played anti football. The ref robbed Tottenham. Clear pen.
To be fair Sheffield United was playing surprisingly well with Fotherinham having an excellent performance, Tottenham didn't crumble under pressure and dominated the entire game, I'd say Ange did a pretty decent job
i thought the premier league was meant to be the big problem for Ange because teams wouldn't park the bus like they did against celtic
As an Arsenal fan I am not looking forward to this weekend. Spurs seem set up to take advantage of our biggest (only?) weakness. It will be interesting to see if Arteta matures and changes his tactics. Predictability was our problem last year.
Nah you'll probably win, we might sneak a draw. Difference is there's no pressure on us to get a win, that would just be a bonus
It will likely be a goal fest... probably Arsenal win because of home advantage. But the biggest turning point will be controlling the midfield. Can Bissouma/Madders dominate? Or do Rice/Odegaard run the game? I think it's a 4-3 win for one team or the other... probably Arsenal.
@@malber2000 I agree it's about that midfield battle. the defenders and forwards sort of cancel each other out.... the side that gets the best service will win.
With both being relentless attackers it should, at the very least, be a superb spectacle.
Hope the bottle it
Lose the background music!
So essentially as long as you play a low block you're fine against Tottenham?
no top table team plays a low block.
Tell that to Sheffield United. Fair enough, it's Sheff Utd, but you get the idea.
The Sheffield United who were 5 mins away from a shock victory?@@TangoMerchant
@parmaman8551 The Sheffield United who lost. Doesn't matter how, doesn’t matter why, doesn’t matter when. What matters is they beat them eventually.
Breaking it down to "Low block beat Spurs lelelel" is exactly what I would expect from TiFo and their nursery school level analysis.
It kinds of does because Sheffield United are one of the worst teams in the division. A decent team will absolutely tear Tottenham apart on the counter @@thebiglebrowski3695

🛑FUN STORY🛑One friend from Dubai told me that Australia national team was a joke & whipping boy for big teams in Asia years before Postecoglou took over & started terrorizing the continent for a while. 🤪
Not true, we were certainly top tier when we joined Asia (only Iran was historically our bogey team), even around early 2010s we had the likes of kewell, Cahill and Schwarzer. Only after those people retired and the teams like Japan and Korea improved we were pretty bad, but even then we still made WC qualification every time. When people say Postecoglou won Australia the Asia cup for the first time, it's not like historically we were terrible, since we only joined Asia federation very recently. It is still a great achievement though because he did it with one of the weaker lineups we've had for years.

Maybe he is perfect but more likely it’s another new manager bounce and Spurs will finish in a similar position. Let’s see in a few months.
If you think the results have been a new manager bounce, then you haven't been watching the games. It's a completely different style of playing. Certainly the results will find their level and the rest of the league will develop countermeasures, but this isn't N.M.B., and Spurs are not finishing in 8th. Especially with the likes of Chelsea and ManU and Newcastle struggling. My guess is 4-6 with 5th being most likely.
