- Here's an NBC News Special Report, from John Dancy of their Washington bureau, which interrupted a first-run episode of Buck Rogers in the 25th Century, "Escape from Wedded Bliss" (S01E11).
Opening and closing voiceover by NBC Washington (and WRC Channel 4) announcer Mac McGarry.
Includes:
About 25 seconds of Buck Rogers, and then comes the notice
John, in a very awkward camera angle at the NBC Newsroom, reports that the Mexican government indicated it would make no sense for the deposed Shah of Iran to return to that country, and thus his visa would not be renewed; doctors at a New York hospital indicated that, despite being treated for cancer and other ailments, he's well enough to travel; Mexico's foreign minister cites the takeover of the U.S. Embassy in Tehran and hostage situation as justification for their decision
The episode is then rejoined "in progress," with 11 seconds shown before the end
"Well, looks like we wasted our time..."
This aired on local Chicago TV on Thursday, November 29th 1979 within the 7:00pm to 8:00pm time frame. (birthday of one of our valued Fuzzy-crew, Mr. William Brown!)
About The Museum of Classic Chicago Television:
The MCCTv (FuzzyMemoriesTV) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit whose primary mission is the preservation and display of off-air, early home videotape recordings (70s to early 80s, mostly) recorded off of TV (in Chicago or other cities now too); things which would likely be lost if not sought out and preserved digitally. If you have any old 1970s videotapes recorded off of TV please email: tapes@fuzzy.tv Even though (mostly) short clips are displayed here, we preserve the entire broadcasts in our archives - the complete programs with breaks (or however much is present on the tape), for historical preservation. For information on how to help in our mission, to donate or lend tapes to be converted to digital, please e-mail tapes@fuzzy.tv Thank you for your help! - Zábava
Probably something that could’ve waited for the next commercial break
Buck Rogers is totally rad. I have the whole series on Blu-ray
Fitting title for a video! 🤖
The deposed Shah of Iran, Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, never returned to his country. He died in exile in July 1980. And because of him, the American hostages continued to be held captive in Iran until January 1981. And Iran has never been the same.
In July 1981, Fred Silverman, NBC's beleaguered president since 1978 (and personally responsible for scheduling "BUCK ROGERS"), resigned from the network.
Fred Silverman held Americans hostage with all that bad programming.
No fancy hi-tech studio for that special report! Looks like they just barely cleared off the empty coffee cups and Coke cans.
I remember the peacock logo
They interrupted Buck Rogers in the 25th Century for THAT!?!
I recall when NBC interruped the start of "FEAR FACTOR" in July 2003 to pay tribute to Bob Hope, who had just died at the age of 100. For all he did for NBC over a period of almost 50 years, they *could* have given him a longer tribute. Instead, NBC president Jeff "I KNOW WHAT I'M DOING!!!!!" Zucker- who was worse than Silverman- just wanted to "get it over with" so he could get back to presenting what's now consodered *THE* worst reality game show- and he scheduled a LOT of reality and game stinkers, because he didn't know how to deal with producers, writers and talent when it came to creating fresh, innovative comedies and dramas. He kept renewing "FRIENDS" and "E/R" long past their prime, as he couldn't generate any newer programs to replace them...........
Sounds like the NBC Washington bureau weren't exactly fans of this series, don'tcha think?
How dare they interrupt "Buck Rogers." Definitely my favorite show from kidhood.
Long before on demand and streaming
"*medebeep* They had to interrupt us when it was getting tense?"
When Twiki wasn't helping Buck Rogers save the world, he was hanging out with his robot friend Bender. Twiki would then pick up Bender's bad habits.
This reminds me of when they interrupted Charlie's Angels for Jonestown!
Never seen that Special Report slide before. It must not have been used very long
Or just one that Washington had on standby if they needed to use it since they did the special report from there instead of New York
Looks like it was Throwback Microphone Day in the DC newsroom.
Couldn't NBC just scrolled the news bulletin rather breaking in for just 30 seconds?
They could have saved it for the next NBC News Update. That was hardly a special report worthy story.
Yeah, seriously! Couldn't they have done that instead? That was the only thing I didn't like about TV back in those days. I'm watching something fun and enjoyable and then they interrupt it with a newsflash about a country crisis or something like that. Other than that television was worth watching back of the day. TV had a lot great shows to watch at that time. If I controlled the TV industry back then, I'd suggest the networks wait for the soap operas to come on before they put the newsflashes on. At least the soap operas are perfect for interrupting with newsflashes.
Damn . . . thought it was going to be a person reporting on a story from the 25th century.
Same.
The interrupted Buck Rogers in the 25th Century for that? I watch shows like this to escape the real world's bad news.
Good 😊
They interrupted Buck Rogers for that?
No news. I just thought you all needed a break. Tweaky's the worst.
You know, I hear he’s got dia-bidi-bidi-ties.
That's "Twiki," but . . . yeah, by that point Mel Blanc's voice had begun to show the effects of age and all.
Nah. It's Twinky. 😉
And that's Alfred Ryder.
@@wmbrown6The voice was fine, I suppose. It was just a bad character.
😂
Jeez I forgot how bad the acting was in the 70's
Still bad today in the 21st century
Seems like "Duck Dodgers in the 24-1/2th Century" had better acting than this. 😉
Mexico could have successfully done the surgery, but was offended because of everything that happened and was said. That's the reason they didn't renew the visa. If Im remembering correctly, and the U.S. doctor that finally performed the surgery was well passed his prime and surgery was too late by the time it was performed. Bad situation to be in.
The passed really past by fast!
