  • Here's an ABC News Special Report, with (most of) Barbara Walters' interview with Egyptian President Anwar Sadat and Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin on the eve of Sadat's visit to Jerusalem, aired over WHBQ Channel 13 in Memphis, TN (then an ABC affiliate and owned by RKO General). Looks like the station wanted to finish the movie and run some promos, because they join the network feed late; about the first minute of the special report was missing. The opening (not seen here) and closing remarks were by her then co-anchor on the ABC Evening News, Harry Reasoner.
    A little bonus will follow.
(Reportage from NBC News of this coming visit by Sadat, and the preparations thereof, was already posted here: • NBC Network - NBC Nigh... )
    Includes:
End of the ending credits to "Blood and Sand" [1941]
Promo for The Lawrence Welk Show for 5:00pm (with the man himself)
Promo for Straight Talk for Monday (with Marge Thrasher; this title was apparently shared among RKO stations, as a show with that title ran on then-sister station WOR Channel 9 in New York for years)
Promo for "Under the Yum Yum Tree" for 11:15pm
Station ID slide / notice of ABC News Special Report (apparently joined in progress, comes in about a minute after the start, at the point Begin says "...express my deep satisfaction...")
Topics of the interview as shown here include whether either considers the two countries to be in a state of war, how Sadat and Begin first met (via President Carter and Romanian leader Nicolae Ceaușescu), and how they expect coming negotiations to proceed - this segment ends after Sadat tells Barbara, "You are always like this," and everybody laughs
Harry, in the studio, explains the substance of the rest of Barbara's interview with the two leaders (such as a possible Begin visit to Cairo, the future of the Palestinian Arabs, and a possible exchange of ambassadors), and that the rest will be broadcast at 10:45pm (Eastern time)
ABC News Special Report ending slide (voiceover by ??)
PSA for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital
PSA for United States Postal Service (with Robert Klein, Rose Marie, Willie Mays, Bobby Riggs, Milton Berle and Lynn Redgrave urging people to mail early - the long version of this ad - the short one with just Klein was posted separately here: • United States Postal S... )
Promo for Sunday lineup on 13, starting with Nancy Drew Mysteries and an early start for The ABC Sunday Night Movie presentation of "Bite the Bullet"
    Commercials for:
    Wendy's Hot & Juicy Hamburgers
Magic Chef Microwave (with Jack Nicklaus and his wife Barbara)
    Station ID slide
Bonus: First minute of The Lawrence Welk Show (Thanksgiving 1977 edition), featuring a rendition of "(There's No Place Like) Home for the Holidays"
This aired on local Memphis TV on Sunday, November 20th 1977 at about the 5:00pm to 5:10pm timeframe.

Barabara was far from perfect. However in her illustrious career, this joint interviews with both Sadat and Began was the highlight IMO. Even more than being the first Woman to starting as a Lead Anchor/Interviewer at a major tv news outlet in America. Ms Walter’s pioneered the celebrity interview whether it was World Political Leaders such as these 2 or Globally known Celebrities.

Hard to believe that treaty cost Sadat his life, yet it was so important to keep the Middle east from exploding. A very brave act by both men.

Sadat was no angel, but he was such a critical (needed) individual. His assassination robbed the world of his voice and vision. I think @MastercheeseTheaterRedux said it best, "at minimum, Sadat’s death set in motion the disastrous road to the war in Lebanon in 1982, the creation of Hezbollah, and the seeds of al-Qaida."

I have to admit, I just did not understand how Lawrence Welk stayed on as long as it did?
To me it was just that weird variety show that my grandfather watched after he had a drink or two.

OK, This might help explain why Lawrence Welk lasted for so long on television- or maybe it won't. Some years ago, media expert, Marshall McLuhan, in his book, 𝑼𝒏𝒅𝒆𝒓𝒔𝒕𝒂𝒏𝒅𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝑴𝒆𝒅𝒊𝒂: 𝑻𝒉𝒆 𝑬𝒙𝒕𝒆𝒏𝒔𝒊𝒐𝒏𝒔 𝒐𝒇 𝑴𝒂𝒏, posed a theory that television was a "cool" medium. Now, here is my extremely simplified explanation of that theory (that I read in yet another book!); the theory is that television is a place, a "cool" medium, where extreme personalities tend to burn out with viewers rather quickly whereas laid-back, more easy-going personalities can thrive on television for much longer periods of time.
BS? Over-thinking the subject? I have to admit, I think the man has a point. I can think of a lot of TV sitcoms where some next door neighbor with a catchphrase will ignite in popularity overnight, burn red hot and then just flare out because we've all gotten so sick of them! But it does seem that it's the low-voltage sorts who just last forever on TV. Now which category does Lawrence fit in?
I will also admit this: we watched 𝑻𝒉𝒆 𝑳𝒂𝒘𝒓𝒆𝒏𝒄𝒆 𝑾𝒆𝒍𝒌 𝑺𝒉𝒐𝒘 every week here in our Chicago suburban home- Dad, Mom and we kids. Don't get me wrong, we were listening to The Jackson 5, Rolling Stones, and all the rest on Top 40 radio and sure, there was something about 𝑻𝒉𝒆 𝑳𝒂𝒘𝒓𝒆𝒏𝒄𝒆 𝑾𝒆𝒍𝒌 𝑺𝒉𝒐𝒘 that was cornball and yet for some reason we liked it. In fact, to this day, I'll still watch an episode on PBS.

I think a lot of the show's continued longevity had to with Welk's abilities as a promoter and businessman. The higher-ups at ABC thought his show was attracting too old of an audience in 1971 when they cancelled it. That could have been the end (Ed Sullivan was also cancelled in '71), but he knew there was still enough interest that the show would work in syndication. At the same time, the new FCC Prime Access Rule gave an hour back to local stations which had belonged to the networks. There was a need for more syndicated material and Welk was a natural fit for ABC affiliates since they had already carried his show from the network.
