Raw Footage of East Berlin the Day Before the Wall Fell (1989)

  • On 8 November 1989, ITN filmed East German officials coming and going from the SED Central Committee building, the headquarters of East Germany's Socialist Unity Party (Sozialistische Einheitspartei Deutschlands; SED), in East Berlin. Party officials were meeting to decide how to respond to the increasing number of East German refugees leaving the German Democratic Republic (Deutsche Demokratische Republik; DDR) for West Germany via Czechoslovakia and Hungary. A day after this footage was filmed, a garbled statement by GDR spokesperson Günter Schabowski would result in thousands of East Germans descending on the Berlin Wall, setting about its destruction, and crossing over into West Berlin. This eerily calm footage of East German state officials going about their business just a day before the fall of the Berlin Wall ("der Mauerfall") demonstrates just how suddenly events unfolded on 9 November 1989.

That they always knew. Hardly anyone of them drove Trabant. The elite is the elite no matter what the system. And authoritarian regimes always assume that the people work for them.

I was 14 years old at the time and lived in the former district of Suhl, today South Thuringia. As a teenager, one was not entirely aware of the significance of the whole thing. What was different was the fact that you were suddenly allowed to "drive over", which was not so easy in the past. And then all the western vehicles. That used to be the most exciting thing for me.

Was 14 back then, too living just south of Berlin pretty much just besides the wall. This 8th Nov. was a Wednesday. The announcement of the border opening late on the 9th we didn't really recognize also on Friday 10th, just like rumors. But then on Saturday, 11th, when going to school the train station of Dahlewitz I had to pass was overly full of people on the way to visit West Berlin. The school was empty, out of my 25 classmates only 4 of us were there (incl. me), also most of the teachers were missing 😂. And the following weekend it felt like the entire population of Saxony was passing through to visit West Berlin. The train station at Schönefeld airport was packed with people, you couldn't move. By the accent of most people there you could think you were in Dresden. Interesting days!
