➡️ What are the Causes of Pneumonia?
Pneumonia has several different causes including viruses, bacteria, fungi, and even parasites in some cases. Common viruses that can cause Pneumonia include:
▪ Influenza (flu)
▪ Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV)
▪ Rhinoviruses (common cold)
➡️ Common bacterias that can cause Pneumonia include:
▪ Streptococcus pneumonia
▪ Mycoplasma pneumonia
▪ Haemophilus influenzae
▪ Legionella pneumophila
➡️ Common fungi that can cause Pneumonia are:
▪ Pneumocystis jirovecii
▪ Cryptococcus species
▪ Histoplasmosis species
➡️ What are the Signs and Symptoms of Pneumonia?
The signs and symptoms of pneumonia can vary in severity from person to person. Here are some of the most common examples:
▪ Productive cough
▪ Fever and chills
▪ Tachypnea
▪ Shortness of breath
▪ Chest pain
▪ Diaphoresis
▪ Fatigue
▪ Cyanosis
➡️ What are the Types of Pneumonia?
Pneumonia is often classified according to how the patient acquired the disease. Here are the different types:
▪ Community-Acquired Pneumonia (CAP)
▪ Hospital-Acquired Pneumonia (HAP)
▪ Ventilator-Associated Pneumonia (VAP)
▪ Aspiration Pneumonia
➡️How is Pneumonia Diagnosed?
Pneumonia is most commonly diagnosed by looking at the patient’s chest x-ray which will show signs of consolidation. Other tests and findings to look for include:
▪ Vital signs
▪ Arterial Blood Gas (ABG) results
▪ Pulmonary Function Tests (PFT)
▪ Sputum culture
▪ Complete Blood Count (CBC)
▪ CT scan
▪ Pleural fluid culture
➡️ Pneumonia Findings
The patient's pulse oximetry would likely reveal hypoxemia and a faster breathing rate (tachypnea) is common as well. The patient’s breath sounds via auscultation will likely reveal crackles (rales) or rhonchi and if you were to perform a chest percussion, a dull sounding note would likely be heard. The patient’s PFT results would likely reveal decreased lung volumes and capacities.
A sputum culture would reveal which type of bacteria is causing the infection. It could be either be a gram-positive or gram-negative bacteria. And a Complete Blood Count would provide the patient's white blood cell count in order to help determine if the infection is viral or bacterial in nature. For instance, increased white blood cells indicate that a bacterial infection is present. Decreased white blood cells indicate that a virus is causing the infection.

Pneumonia should be treated on a case by case basis but, in general, here are the common treatment methods:
▪ Antibiotic medications
▪ Oxygen therapy
▪ Bedrest
▪ Airway clearance therapy
▪ Hyperinflation therapy
▪ Fluid management

Good day Doc, is it possible for me to get rid of phlegm if ever I will be vaccinated with pneumonia vaccine? Last March I was having influenza and my doctor give me co-amoxiclav and some other medicines and vits, I am cured only the phlegm on my throat is still there and sometimes I cough

First consult chest specialist doctor, he will give the proper treatment, don't consult general mbbs doctors only. ct chest scan is must for easy to find the infection percentage in lungs area. Don't delay it definitely your dad was recovered quickly,

I had pneumonia when I was nine, was only in the hospital for two nights. They put antibiotics through my arm, terrible feeling. I remember two aspiring doctors came in and tried to guess what I had by doing checkups on me. They didn't get it right 😅. I now have the same symptoms as I did, so I'm slightly worried.
I just realised I could of had years ago and didn’t know, I’ve heard people say they had it for months, before finding out.
I got Pneumonia by going to physical therapy to help me recover from herniated disc surgery. I think the PTs were not doing a good job cleaning the PT tables. 7 days of antibiotic required plus an additional week of rest. I am 68.

There is! My doctor checks every year so that I’ll remember; if there’s a change in when or if it should be repeated she’ll let me know.
There is one called pneumococcal vaccine and it is usually given to adults 65 years or older or younger people. But for the most part, other precautions are more useful than a vaccine.
Yes I had i just told my doc that its been a while and I needed a another vacant didnt get one. Just left a 12 days hospital stay still fighting it.

Wow, two types of pneumonia from hospital stays. I was be recently in the hospital for surgery and they were monitoring me to make sure I didn't develop pneumonia afterwards and have me antibiotics.

It started pneumonitis, then forming bilateral pnuemonia later on..March 2021 I've done rapid test for a travel pass requirement. The result was i was covid positive but I have no any cough or symptoms at all. How does it happened? Even i tested positive, i never told anyone in my home, yet I'm still in good condition. Long days past, my home is ok. No contagious happened.. My question is, how I tested positive??? Is it bcoz of my pneumonia history?
