    Thank you so much. I became legally blind when I was 9 months old thanks to a complication during a surgery. I’ve always wondered about if there’s a correlation between blindness/ visual impairment and mental health since it’s something I also struggle with. Especially depression, social anxiety and agoraphobia.

    Hi legally blind,I am also legally blind or partially blind and I use a white cane and I live in Alberta Canada.For 6 months I had to live with cataracts in both eyes that caused me to be depressed,emotional and anxiety because I had to rely on my mom,niece and a friend or two to help me out to get around my city and after my cataract surgery late last fall I am independent and I have my freedom back again,I am happy and blessed and I thanked my eye surgeon that operated on my eyes and now I can see a bit better with my glasses
    I no longer feel depressed,no anxiety etc just happiness and excited to be able to see people's faces,traffic lights,buildings,street lights up close etc

    Yes this! And this only scratches the surface of what contributes to mental health struggles among folks who are visually impaired. Infantalizing contributes largely also.
    I would love to contact you and have you on a podcast I've just started with 2 other blind women. We are covering political and personal topics from the perspective of the blind community and other disability communities. We can have you on 1 or more episodes.

    Thank you so much for this video. I think I needed to hear that...
    I am born with a visual impairment and I actually thought I learned how to deal with my disability and accept myself for who I am throughout my life. But recently I noticed that I till have the tendency to compare myself to others without a disability and try to live up to a certain "standard" of life (whatever this means). It feels like I still need to learn a lot about myself and accept that not everything is so great and that it is okay to feel sad at times. I wish every visual impaired or blind person and everybody who read this all the best and much love. We got this!

    I'm literally in tears as I'm watching this video my little girl is 8 years old and has low only about 10% eyesight And Nystagnus...I have worked diligently For several years in attempts to understand what it's like to see through her eyes or not see whichever the case may be I have become disabled physically over the past few years myself And my eyesight is diminishing She has several genetic mutations One of them cutting her life expectancy down to Possibly 15 to 30 years And I refuse to give up on understanding what she's going through and meeting her right where she's at Not trying to do the religious thing as you mentioned although I'm a minister because the Lord actually tells us grieve with those who grieve Rejoice with those who rejoice so we are supposed to be willing to listen and just be astounding board Not always have to relate or find something quote unquote positive to say And I love your videos It's the first time she has found someone she can relate to that she feels has a very good way of explaining especially your video on what it's like to see through the eyes of one who is visually impaired It's almost spot on to what she deals with and it felt so good for her to watch that and be able to tell me yes mama that's what it's like for me my heart It's so filled with love and heartbreak at the same time It's so bittersweet But I think it's pretty amazing that you're a scientist she happens to have savantisms and math numbers art and science are her forte's other than being a natural equestrian lol She has a passion for genetics and genomes because of her own mutations She's homeschooled I have to work very hard to recreate lessons and make sure that they are visually accommodating With contrast colors enlarged writing We use dry erase boards We do not have any programs yet as the blind services has really drugged their feet the past 3 years We still have not even had a mobility specialist come see her and it's been very disheartening however I have worked myself to the bone to learn how to help my little girl although being fully cited and now only losing my eyesight because I'm in my 40s I can understand a tiny bit but the depression and isolation can get overwhelming for her I can't thank you enough for these videos as she is finally feeling like someone gets her

    Thank you. This was helpful on many levels. I'd like to add that some dealing with vision loss may also be dealing with other difficult chronic health conditions. Also family members who are not coping well with the vision loss and get upset at us for handling it differently than they think we should. It adds emotional pain as another cherry on top.

    I want to thank you for talking about this issue. I too am a person who is legally blind and have mental illness in fact I have chosen to start a journey on getting a psychiatric dog that will also do medical alert task rather than a guy dog because I feel it is far more beneficial for me since I still have sight. I often wonder what people were saying about this topic and I often wonder why we don’t talk about her mental health and have support groups for those of us who are blind. I belong to a mental health support group community

    this is a great content and it is so great to discuss about that .. we should always be gratefully to how we are .. but we should accept that we get panic when we know that we are in a different state than others , this panic that leads us to depression .. is the same reason that leads people to point fingers at you that you are not grateful or you are just imagining .
    we are all different in different ways but we still humans which makes each one a unique human ,and we should accept that by knowledge .

    @lamasherif3382 Před 3 lety

    First off, I'm happy to hear that you're back and feeling better. I love how informative your videos are and I can't seem to get enough of them. I can especially relate to the constant pressure of having to be happy and cheerful all the time and how some emotions are perceived to be "negative" and others "positive". I honestly believe that emotions are what they are, just simply emotions. Some emotions make you feel like your on top of the world, and others are just harder to process and are more complex to deal with, but that doesn't mean that you have to shove them aside and portray a state of false positivety and happiness for everyone to feel relieved.
    I would like to hear you talk more about how a visually impaired or a visually blind person would like/ expect / wish others to do when interacting with them. Personally, I try to be as empathetic as possible, but I sometimes fear that I might be coming off as "condescending" or taking pity on someone when that isn't really my intention. There seems to be a very thin line between perceiving empathy and pity, one is appreciated and the other is not obviously. How can we make sure that we are not falling into that mistake?

    • @legallyblind4215
      @legallyblind4215  Před 3 lety +2

      Thanks, Lama! Yes, it is a fine line sometimes between sympathy and empathy, but my take on it is this: If deep inside you really do pity the person, you're going to have a hard time conveying empathy instead of sympathy. It is that feeling deep inside that needs work, and it's not very easy to change. You would have to truly convince yourself and change your perspective from "poor thing, how awful!-" to "this person is suffering (and suffering is a natural part of being alive), I wonder if I could help somehow". And somehow, helping just means listening and being ok with not knowing what to say, but just sitting there and listening and not saying anything, the need to fill in the silence with anything is usually what leads to mistakes...

    There is such a stigma with it. I suffered a seizure at 22 after not having any since I was like five. They immediately tried to say it was psychogenic. Lol I have epilepsy but unless I’m in an active seizure state you’re not gonna measure anything different on the EEG… because of that in my vision they immediately went for PNES, psychogenic nonepileptic seizures. Then I had one leaving the neurologist office. Yeah, nope…

    Hey man I’m watching you keep posting I’m interested in your life and how you live life with blindness. I care about your well being sister and that is coming from the heart. my mother is blind and she’s been blind for 11 years now. I know she is depressed and try my best to make her happy. I wish I could give her my vision just so I don’t have to see her suffer anymore. Because she tells me she is miserable. And I don’t know what to do, it’s only me and my dad. My dad is undocumented we get zero help from the government for my mom. Me and my dad are always working and she is always home alone with no one to watch her or even talk to her, or to see if she’s alive. She always tells me one day you guys can come back to find me dead. And that kills me every day horribly.
