Looking for employment with a disability can definitely feel like an uphill battle. Today I want to share some of the different positions I've taken, some of the interviews I've been on, and the best and worst experiences I've had looking for work. I would love to hear your employment experiences down below!

I had a lot of issues finding employment and discrimination at work in retail-I would also add gaslighting to the list of challenges. People don’t think this discrimination exists! It totally does and I got lucky and now work in Human Resources, and even though it’s illegal, it’s hard to prove the discrimination in a legal sense, very frustrating!
I’m glad you found something that works! I hate to agree but you are completely right. It’s tough to prove discrimination and I’ve had many employers and teachers for that matter think my disability is fake.
Hey Tamara I love your voice what are you describing your video is how I have felt as a blind and visually impaired person because when I was in secondary school over here in Ireland I went for a work placement and I did the job interview and I thought because of my visual impairment I wouldn’t get the work experience except they actually gave me the job and I was perfect for and I’m glad they gave me the job because it showed that the preconceived notions of what I could do brunch there

I've been legally blind for 5 and a half years now, and have been supported by the ODSP and family.
Since losing the majority of my vision in 2019, it's my first time actively trying to earn an income. I felt like I lost a huge chunk of my life, as my vision loss happened when I was 29 going 30, and now I'll be 35 in a few months. I've essentially back-pedalled my life for slightly over half a decade.
I somehow stumbled on this video in the hopes of finding a list of jobs or industries in which I could build an income, but found your experience instead. These 14 or so minutes were absolutely worth it for me, as I got a sneak peek into what to expect at the beginning of this journey.
As I've mainly been on the customer side of service as a visually impaired for over 5 years, it's good I got this advanced warning, rather than feeling humiliated when the transition from customer to employee goes wrong.
Again, thank you so much for sharing this experience, and I'll be sure to check out your other videos on this topic.
I hope your transition back into the work-force is smooth sailing. :) It sounds like you have been through a lot in the last few years. I can't promise employment will be an easy journey, but there are great folks out there wanting to give people a good shot at independence and inclusion in the workforce.

Love your channel ma'am. Am older low vision man with Fuchs Dystrophy and cataracts. (accelerated by my DMEK surgeries, always a possible issue.) I always get so much value from your sharing, so many thanks to you! Have definitely encountered the same situations you describe here. no one wants to hire a possible liability as they see it, and often get angry /confused / exasperated, that i can "see" large objects or light/dark...but most is lost. Your grace and determination are examples I try to emulate daily.

Great video! I’m sorry for all the frustrating experiences you’ve talked about with employment opportunities. That’s so cool that the people at your massage position saw your value and went above and beyond to pay you! I’ve talked about the conversation I had with one my supervisors about how they thought of me when they realized I was visually impaired, in yesterday’s video I posted. I’m at a volunteer program at my local hospital! I enjoy certain stuff in the medical field from what I’ve grown up with and helping other people! I want to go somewhere in that world! They never thought negatively about my disability. What they always look for for anybody is their compassion, empathy, patience, kindness, and etc. They said, from what they saw in my resume, also me showing that I really want and can do work with them, they hired me! It felt so good and empowering that they were willing to give me a chance, because they’ve never worked with someone with a visual impairment. They treat me as any other person that comes in. All the people I work with are amazing to me! I feel really valued and understood by them! Which made me a little emotional during that talk with my boss. I told her about how people with disabilities unfortunately don’t get a chance in workplaces. She was so sweet and nice about everything I’ve said! I got my picture taken with my coworker for representation of the volunteer program. So I took my cane out so people knew I was disabled, but also to empower other people that I can or we can be just as capable and confident to work as anybody else!

I can relate you. I srarted earning as a tutor of high school girls eventhough it was seasonal (month before final exam),that gave me lot of confidence. I'm member of disable women organization & they have proposed me for internship however I'm not able to mamage time as I'm occupied with my semester assignkents & exam.What I feel is that people are unaware about the ability of PWDs.Pepple who are familier with persons with disabilities treat us normal
Absolutely spot on! I think people have pre-conceived notions about what a person can and can’t do because of a disability and that is almost always inaccurate. I would hope in the future we can break down those misconceptions of ability and see a more equal footing in the workforce.

From one Tamara to a fellow Tamara, great video. I’m also VIP. I have RP and while my central vision is stable, I want to best prepare for my future as I don’t know what will happen. Your energy and channel provide me a sense of comfort, familiarity with visual impairment and a newfound resolve to be okay with where I am and to make the necessary steps to best prepare for the future. Could you please do a future video on your social circle or how your friendships are now that you are older? Maybe suggestions for establishing a social circle as an adult and your opinions on dating/marriage and potential kids. How do you navigate those waters?

You are absolutely correct. There is a huge disparity in opportunities for those with disabilities in high and low income countries and it's something that needs to be spoken about more. I would count myself fortunate that I am from a relatively high-income country, however that does not mean that job hunting with disabilities is easy anywhere.
I came here to learn, but then you mentioned your interest in care work. Are you still searching for paid care work? Or have you found paid work that works for you? Or have you found someplace you’re happy and plan to stay awhile? Reason I’m asking is because I’d love to connect with you about opportunity I have in this field. You have skills / experience that I greatly value. I wanted to submit a message via your web site, but I’m having some barriers with it. Anybody reading this, who may be blind/ visually impaired, your never alone, I may not know how you see this world, but always remember your hear for a special/specific reason,I’m not afraid to say who I am, I currently work as a dishwasher at a restaurant, currently I’m trying to get a job into software development, I have a detached Retna in my right eye. Anybody who’s completely blind, don’t ever think your worthless, because your not. I believe in you! You can achieve anything you want to be on this earth, your meant to break barriers remember that, look at ray charles. Don’t ever give up! God is good.

Albinos recognize albinos! Yep I've experienced discrimination many times and can't find work for many years. Are you completely blind? I'm half blind

I'm a little jealous, your hair is much whiter than mine. Mine has a bit of a yellowy/platinum blonde color. Also your skin is milky white, I'm jealous! I live in Texas where I get sunburned just being inside the house

Oh my goodness! I hope you have good sunscreen out in Texas. When I visited a few years back I roasted like a cherry tomato in minutes.
I'm sorry to hear about your employment woes. I think Music is a pretty universal thing for us blind/low vision folks. I even read studies where folks with vision loss processed music and synthesized it better than sighted folks. Pretty cool!
