  • In this video, I'll show you how to make a Curtis Buchanan style Democratic Chair using leftover 2x4s. I'll be using the design developed by Curtis Buchanan, a master of green woodworking, who is known for creating functional and beautiful furniture using locally harvested and sustainable materials.
    I'll be using 2x4s that I had leftover from other projects, but you can use any dimension of wood you have on hand. The chair will be sturdy and comfortable, perfect for indoor or outdoor use.
    I'll walk you through the process of building the chair, from cutting the wood to shaping the seat and backrest. I'll show you how to use simple hand tools and techniques to create a piece of furniture that is both functional and beautiful.
    This is a great project for anyone who wants to learn about green woodworking and create their own sustainable furniture. So grab your leftover 2x4s and let's get started!

      I had a teacher that once said you should burn (or destroy) the first project you make in a totally new field or craft. This lets you be free to make mistakes, try things, and in general not be afraid to push forward with the project. At the end it will be gone and you can try your next one.
      I've kept that in mind but also like keeping my first project around as a reference to how I started and what happened during that build as I start the second one.

    Amazing just how strong pine is. I have been building “prototype” dining chairs out of pine (to get the exact feel down that we want between design/function/comfort before I commit to a nicer material) and we have just been using the prototypes, lol.

      Yes it’s totally worth it to use a cheaper wood to learn on, even though the cost of 2x4’s is insane right now… these are most likely spruce.

      Agreed. I started woodworking following Paul Sellers videos/tutorials and it seems like even a master woodworker like him still starts with Pine prototypes. Just so much cheaper and easier, and you know if it is strong enough with Pine most "fancy" woods will work just as well.
      Hello my first bar stool I made is out of pine (painted) and has had zero issues living in my kitchen under the island for years.

    Nice, buddy! From 2x4's! One probably has to be a little careful about avoiding knots when prepping the blanks, but as someone who has dabbled in all sorts of green woodworking and hand tool woodworking, finally starting the democratic with some birch I found from a friend's yard and some tulip that I literally lucked into passing by where I work that was big enough for a seat, I procrastinated thinking it wouldnt be worth it with any of the "soft wood" that is around, kiln dried not going to be a good idea, etc.... you proved us all wrong. So I am literally just a few steps away from finally finishing my first one after dreaming about it and building a bunch of stools, starting and stopping the chair over a year or two for various reasons. But now my next one can be procrastination free! And with the nice Doug Fir grain we can find with some digging through the bunks at the big box stores here in the PNW, I bet it would be a gorgeous chair to leave just oiled to boot! Just what Curtis, his friends and his teachers were hoping for, taking the ball and running with it, good on you! Also felt motivated to comment at the nice presentation of all the steps visually represented with clarity and efficiency. As someone who has done almost all of it once now and watched Curtis a bunch of times to figure stuff out in his lengthy free videos, I got a ton of great ideas and inspiration from your succinct editing. Particularly surprised thay you could get good results drawknifing softwood, but if you select your pieces and saw them out with the grain prepped to be sweet for you, why wouldn't it work? Those of us who don't have ready access to bountiful hardwoods in our areas have no excuses now!

    • @dpmakestuff
      @dpmakestuff  Před 11 měsíci

      Thanks very much! Peter Galbert has done some testing and found that you can rehydrate wood and get green like characteristics out of it quite easily. The seats on traditional Windsor’s would be a soft wood like pine so I knew my spruce 2x4’s would be good enough for that. Seats were often glued up to get the right width too so I also didn’t feel terrible gluing strips together. The geometry of the chair made it incredibly strong and to this day, a year and a half later, it feels just as strong and comfortable to sit in.
      My only regret was not making more immediately. I recommend getting some milk paint for your chairs too. It will make them look and feel amazing.

      @Atonal777 Před 11 měsíci

      @@dpmakestuff Word! I actually just got served (or re-served Pete's teaser videos for his full Vimeo course after maybe not clicking them first time for whatever reason) and I watched with rapt attention and wonder as he parsed out happy grain pieces from construction lumber, riving them (gasp) and accepting their weird splits (gasp) and working with non perfectly straight grain wood (gasp) that isn't oak (gasp!) and getting 95% as good results for most intents and purposes. Then soaking them to make them easier to carve (gasp!) and if it were anyone else, I wouldn't have believed him. Funny, I literally just watched it the other night, thanks!
      Being stuck up about a single piece seat was one of my bigger procrastination items because most of the people you see in videos have single blanks and say, "you could do a glue up I guess, but I used a solid piece and always do.", so you being the first for me to see giving it a go, I'm sold. One less excuse!
      Better believe I got some milk paint. Robin's egg blue or thereabouts. :)

    Interesting, I'd be curious how long it last all being made of pine. Seems like most stuff I read says not to use pine for all parts, but actually building one and seeing how it lasts is the best experiment. At the very least you made a chair, it works, and was cheap to do so!
    I'll be starting my first chair soon but I bet that build was addicting, and makes you want to start the next one right away! Oh and totally have done the glue up and no longer fits into my thickness planer thing before..... always fun haha.

    After watching this again, I think that the key part of the chair is the middle stretcher. That stretcher needs a wedge to prevent furthat splaying of the legs.

    • @dpmakestuff
      @dpmakestuff  Před rokem

      It’s not a trough mortise so you can’t wedge it. Also it’s a stretcher, not a puller. It’s under tension because it’s pushing the legs away from the centre.
