This week on Sunday Longplay, I'm playing an enhanced PC remake of one of my favorite video games of all time! Welcome to Zelda 2: The Adventure of Link: PC Enhanced Edition!
I wasn't planning on uploading this until next month to begin building the hype for the new Zelda game, Tears of the Kingdom, but with the Zelda Splatfest next weekend, I might as well get the Zelda Month hype train rolling now!
The enhanced PC edition of Zelda 2 mostly maintains the same world map as the NES version, but adds so many new features and so much new content to it that it effectively doubles the size of the game! For starters, the original game only had four collectible Heart Containers and four Magic Containers. Here, they're now Heart Pieces and Magic Pieces, and there are 18 of each to collect, with every 3 forming a full container. It's like how the Switch remake of Link's Awakening upped the collectible seashells from 20 to 50. Also, there are many new special power-up items that involve lengthy sidequests that take until late in the game to finish.
Some of these items include the Red Ring (obtained by breaking the boulder circle south of Death Mountain in the correct order, which is randomly generated and you learn by talking to the wise men a second time after learning their spells) which acts as a permanent Protect spell (with using the spell increasing your defense even further and turning your tunic blue), the Pendant (obtained by obtaining the Book of Mudora and casting four random spells in the correct order at a temple north of the entrance to Maze Island, and then fighting a Hard Mode version of Carock) which constantly regenerates your Magic meter, the Hylian Shield (obtained by getting the Book of Mudora and casting four random spells in order at King's Tomb) which allows you to deflect any projectile (though you still need the Reflect spell to bounce them back at enemies) and the Master Sword even makes an appearance here (obtained by killing all 12 hidden slime enemies scattered throughout the world and opening a warp zone in the North Castle) giving you the ability to pierce enemy armor effectively eliminating all need for the Fire spell.
The second quest also implements some meaningful changes (mostly to two of its boss fights) so it's not just the first quest all over again starting with all your levels. For starters, Helmethead gets a Hard Mode version where its head takes longer to generate after knocking it off and has a swamp floor and two blood drippers on the pillars, and Rebonack gets flame shooters that go off whenever he charges you. But the biggest addition to the second quest is a brand-new endgame area!
In the original Zelda 2, the story was that Ganon is dead and the monsters are trying to get Link's blood to summon him back. Here, Zelda (now awakened by the Triforce at the end of the first quest) gives you an empty vial at the beginning of the second quest. Killing Dark Link again will give you a new cutscene where the vial is filled with Dark Link's blood and you get new directions to go south of Death Valley (where the Great Palace is) to the new area of Dragmire (which is also Ganondorf's last name, ironically enough). At the end of another short series of quests, you enter Dragmire Palace where you get to summon Ganon yourself with Dark Link's blood and fight him as the True Final Boss! This blew my mind when I first played it, and I love how the Ganon fight was made with the seemingly overpowered power-ups mentioned above in mind. He hits like a truck even with Red Ring + Protect Spell, the Pendant will keep your Magic up for all the Healing you'll need to do (as well as regenerating the lost MP from the costly brand-new Summon spell needed to start the fight), the Hylian Shield can deflect his fireballs and meteor spell, and the Master Sword can pierce his armor. I love it so much!

To those wondering what the final part was. Basically Ganondorf needed Link's blood in order to return to normal so what Link did was he fought and defeated Dark Link and took his blood instead. This is because the blood from his shadow would be incompatible with Ganon and as such he would return in a weakened state but it would also be technically Link's blood but not hence why he would be bought back in an incomplete state. A botched revival so to speak. So Link went to Ganon's Castle with Dark Link's blood hich is in a state of ruins to finally put Ganon to rest once and for all. He pours Dark Link's blood on the grave that contains Ganon's soul. This causes the grave to come to life attacking Link (It's supposed to resemble Ganon's head of his Gerudo form hence the jewel.) After a two part battle Link destroys the grave that Ganon's possessing reducing him to his incomplete soul form. A demonic skull infused in dark shadow mass. After a grueling fight what remains of Ganon is destroyed and his dark presence fades completely thus putting a permanent end to the king of evil. (At least until BOTW where he reincarnates once more as the calamity in the reunified timeline.)

This looks like a true definitive edition. The scale of it makes this game feel like the grand adventure Nintendo wanted for Link.

Now THIS is how you do a remake. No stupid sprite swaps or texture pack upgrades, just the same style of graphics, only utilized better

  • @pixelpanic

I'm blown away by this being done in Game Maker. It's a fine enough engine for this, my point being that this game feels so authentic, I never would've guessed.

Great playthrough! You missed the upgraded fairy spell "cucco" in the forest to the left of the river monster. You have to enter the sidescrolling section and when you come out of it, hammer the trees to reveal it. Makes it last for as many screens as you want, and you can also up/down stab with it. Apparently if you beat the game in this form, you get a special ending.

This is the best remake I've personally seen. It feels like the original just with so much more depth. I think this version would have had most people making a more level comparison with the original.

Interesting concept, this remake. At first, that post-game segment confused me a bit. But then I realized the original had an unresolved plot point: Ganon's followers seeking Link's blood. Going for a second bout against Dark Link to extract HIS blood, getting the mask for a disguise, and that oddball boss fight are actually efforts to undermine and prevent Ganon's return. Also, interesting idea to use an 8-bit render of the Ganon battle theme from A Link to the Past. That whole "undermine and prevent Ganon's return" thing is showcased by the fact that Dark Link's blood was incompatible. It also feels like the idea for that post-game fight was pulled out of Castlevania 2 Simon's Quest.

Its 1989 im 5 years old and this game was a fav. Fast forward to 2023 im 38 and this game is now a masterpiece.

  • @MichaelWorthy25

Monster Town was a very nice touch, and all of the new areas to explore with the raft is awesome.

  • @jamesdixon6332

It's so much better watching your upload of this as opposed to others because you actually know what you're doing and how to play the game. Thank you.

  • @JohnDoe-oo6dq

What an amazing remake! Has a lot of depth and doesn't stray away from the story, in fact it adds more to it in a way that makes sense and in a way that it makes it feel more complete. This game has always been one of my favorite Zelda games and I've always wanted to see a remake of it. Great work!

This looks extremely well done! I'm loving pretty much all of the additions, new flourishes, and details. Bagu having the riverman's picture on the wall in his house was a great touch too 😂

I'm playing through this right now and I'm loving it. It's nostalgic and very different at the same time. I love all the little enhancements and changes made.

was hoping they put back in some of the Famicom disk system-enhanced sound effects like the shield sound or some of the boss growls.

  • @yumyumeatemup

Haven't watched all of it, but from what I have seen within the first 2 hours of play time has been nothing short of phenomenal! I especially love how the maker of this enhanced edition made usage of the games combat techniques to provide a 2ndary function in traversing some areas, gating off progress to certain locations and upgrades unless you had the downward strike. That's a stroke of creative genius and expands the depth of the games mechanics in a new and fresh way!

looks way beter than the orginal . nice job
