This video just saved me $$$! Thank you!
Tip: If your doing the repair alone, try removing the parking-brake cable bracket from the hinge pin. Then simply reattach it to the new brake shoe. This way you won't need to struggle with the spring.
Because of your videos my fiancée pretty much thinks I'm a mechanic! You guys are radical! Thanks!
+This Doeb Thanks for watching! 1aauto.com 866-403-3393
wish it went this smooth on my truck!
I just replaced my rear drums on my 2013 Gmc Sierra ,not going to lie this is mt first brake job I ever did. Your video helped tremendously. I did find that if you remove the spring on the emergency brake pull out slack and vice grip before the spring. I then replace the spring attached the cable then released the grip. Thanks for you help.
@Leo Beltran We're not sure of any type of an indicator that may or may not be on this vehicle. You may want to check the fuse and also the level of the brake fluid in the reservoir, just to make sure that it isn't low. Hope this helps you out. 1aauto.com
absolutely wonderful video. Got me through my brake job on my 2013 Silverado. Thanks, very much appreciated
+Darrel Thom Thanks for watching. If any of our viewers needs to make this repair we carry a great selection of brake pads and rotors on our website. Here is a link to them. goo.gl/PN2ec6
just did these yesterday, im still learning. not too bad once u do it a few times.
Man yall helpin me save so much money teaching me how to do it on my own
Did mine today this video helped out a lot. Thanks for the video
My break adjuster was extended out when trying to initially get drums off. This causes the pads to be pressed into the drum and you will not get the drum off. I ended up breaking the first side off before i realized what happened and how to fix. There is small rubber gasket on the back of the drum housing and you can get a screw driver in there to spin the adjuster wheel and loosen the tension.
Do u loosen by movin up or down
Great video. Simple and to the point 👌 good job 👍👍👍
+Paul Honesto Thanks for checking us out! 1aau.to/m/Shop-1AAuto-c
The ebrake and the slack adjuster clip was the worst when I did it on my 2011 silverado you made it look so smooth
+Brandon Stewart Thanks for watching! If any of our viewers needs to make this repair, we carry the auto repair part shown in this video on our website. Here is a link to them www.1aauto.com/search?q=1ABDS00329
Thanks for helping me get drums off with bolt helps a great deal.
Do you think an M10 bolt will also crack the front rotors from the front hubs?
I just used this video to install my rear breaks on Silverado 2011. It seemed to go well but when I tested my brakes while driving it's holding but the pedal seems to loose pressure and go to the floor. Maybe I didn't adjust something tight enough?
Never mind clip came off real easy . peice of cake!!!
Getting ready to start on this tonight and wrap it up in the morning. I watched another video for the same year on the GMC Sierra and it looks slightly complicated. There was some bar that ran from the midway on one side around the inside edge around the bottom coming back up to the other side ending halfway up. I hope mine is like this because it seems a lot more simplified.
+terence scott Thank you for your feedback!
Thank you. Very helpful 👍
You guy's are cool in my book...
Thank you for watching!

Just the video I needed! Haha Thank you!
I found that using a C nose vise grip clamp to hold shoe in place as you install retaining spring pin wrks good
Crazy .. lol been getting parts from yall ... didnt know yall did videos
outstanding !
Love your vids. They have helped me knock out a couple projects on my vehicles. Got a question for ya, after watching a few different videos on changing drum brakes on a 2011 Silverado, there are apparently two different drum brake setups. One setup is obviously the kind you worked on in the video. The 2nd setup has a totally different lower spring setup. It looks to be in the shape of giant U. Do you know a way I can tell what drum brake setup my truck might have without pulling thee wheel & drum off to see?
I just started working on my brakes yesterday, finding out the same thing you explained. What I'm thinking is that the one with the lower small spring goes on the z71 package. Because I changed other brakes on a regular 4x4 Silverado and a 2x4 Silverado and both came with the big U setup. The thing is that auto parts in my area don't have the z71 ones. Im heading to the dealership today hoping they have them in stock. Hope it helps.
Just wondering if the new shoes you sell have the E brake connecting plate already attached to the shoe?
Perfect instructions!
Thanks for the video, best I have seen yet on this topic. Also made it look easier to do. May replace mine this weekend if needed. How long roughly do you think it took to do this job. I have watched other videos where a special tool is needed, but didn't see it used on this video, so I guess that just is to make life easier on most.
It might take you about 30-45 minutes per side to do. It's not that bad of a job. 1aauto.com 888-844-3393
You might mention a couple items when reassembling the adjuster and lever. The L shaped lever has to both go on the rivet on the shoe and inside the slot on the left end of the adjuster to keep it in place. I had to disassemble after realizing this. Just a note...
+Cliff Shear Thank you for your feedback!
Great video, as I have come to expect from you guys! Would strongly suggest at least two items, though. $10 brake pliers are worth every cent of it and more. Also, a tie-down, wrapped around both shoes holds them in place, so you don't need a second person or to strain yourself or to have them pop out. Spring washer tool is pretty cool and cheap, too, instead of vice grips, but not as critical as the other two items, I believe.
+Miller Henley Thanks for the input! Glad you liked our video. www.1aauto.com
my 08 is totally different. i have the large spring. around the bottom. and the Ebreak is also different. i wish mine was that simple.
That’s why it says 09-13
so if it still squeeks after lubricating those points, does that usually mean i have to replace all brake components?
Thanks for the video.. question.. will the wear out of my brakes cause the stabilitrax and abs light to go off? Ive been having my 2011 teuck stabilitrax service light on and off for about a month now.. thanks
need a video on replacing parking brake shoes on a 2009 gmc 1500...please and thanks
Hey great video! I have seen a few comments stating that the procedure is different for 2008s, do you know if the 2010s are the same as your 2011? Thanks!
+Ty Tews Thank you for checking us out. The 2010 and 2011 model should remain the same. 1aauto.com
Thanks
My 2013 sqeeks when I let off the brake only. Thanks for the video. I'm going to try fixing it myself with this video.
Good luck and thanks for checking out our videos! If any of our viewers need to make this repair, we carry the part shown in this video on our website. Here's a link to them. We also offer free shipping on all orders in the US.

Thanks for the help!!!
+Dan Howard Thanks for checking us out! 1AAuto.com
Do these brakes need to be broken in after installation? Is there a break-in procedure I should be implementing?
Isn't it important to have the shoes adjusted the same on the passenger/driver side? Also, wouldn't a little bit of friction between the drum and shoes cause when the brake isn't applied cause premature shoe wear? Last question, is the ring/clip that holds the drum in place need to be put back on? I didn't see that in the video. You do great work with these videos!
+Ben Rogers Thank you for checking us out. The driver and passenger side shoes should have the same alignment. A little bit of friction between the drum and shoe could cause premature wear. Some of these clips or rings are inserted from the manufacturer to ease the bulk manufacturing process. You may attempt to reuse it, or in most cases you may discard of it as long as the other bolts are installed. 1aauto.com
Hey, I'm having trouble finding the shoes for the z71. They don't have them at any auto parts. Do I have to get them from the dealership?
What size is the M10 bolt? 10mm? and how long?
thank you so much
Hey everyone, I'm getting ready to attempt the brake job on my 2011 Silverado. Anyone else have any suggestions? Is it basically like the above video or did anyone run into a unique situation no addressed here?
Do you need both rear tires off the ground to replace them? New here
Wow how come chevy used drum brake in their full size pickup until 2013?
What's the thread pitch on that m10.?
What is the metal peice that the emergency brake line snaps into in the beginning I threw mine away and have a headache over it.
Hi Mike, I have a 2013 Silverado. My truck has trouble starting on cold mornings, kind of like stuttering. I just wanted to see if you had any advice for me to fix it.
+chuy Medina Thanks for checking us out! There may be many reasons why you are experiencing this, so we do recommend to go to a local mechanic for an accurate diagnosis.
I used white lithium grease to lubricate the back plate as mentioned. And squeek went away for less than a day, then its back.
Good video, clear footage. I leave the ebrake cable, don't see any reason to fuss with it. You showed taking it off and immediately putting it back on. Nothing in between. :)
So I just replaced my the shoes yesterday and it was working fine but then after a while of drive they started squeaking and rubbing real hard even when I would step on the brakes, any idea what it could be?
+raider nation 831 Thanks for watching! You will want to double check the pads, as they are probably not set in correctly. 1aauto.com
What is the part number for the rear brake shoes in the video of replacing the rear brake shoes on a 2009-2013 Chevrolet Silverado truck cannot find them everywhere has the shoes that don’t have the shoes that have the bottom spring
Except; watch closely as we are informed to connect the blue spring to the “brackets on both shoes”. See anything out of place? Watch very closely at the adjustment segment, around 6:55, and you’re going to actually see the blue spring, connected to the adjuster bracket. That is of course unless I need a new prescription for my glasses
Great video thanks! Quick question... I changed my rear drums and shoes on my 2011 Silverado about 8 months ago (using you guys video which helped out tremendously) and about a month ago I started having a vibration coming from the rear of the truck when I push the brakes. Is it possible to have bought a bad set of drums and shoes?
Probably didn’t leave enough space between pads and drum
Instead of taking off the emergency brake cable just take off the silver clip on the back of the brake shoe that is holding the cable part. WAY EASIER to squeeze the clip back on the new shoe then pulling the cable back into place
Thanx 😊😁
i dont have the as i call them the nail spring clips !! i have a big w spring clip. /my tuuck was a deisel 4x4 modefied with a 400 gas engine . nothing seems to match with serial #| s .
I've got the adjuster back all the way off in the drum still doesn't want to fit over the brake shoes. Is this normal?
Thanks boss
What’s the part number for these shoes can’t seem to find them anywhere ?
very helpful, i do not remove the emergency brake cable ,just remove the bracket that it is attached too and reconnect it to the new brake shoe, its a PITA that brake cable so why touch it
Any tips if you cant get that cable reattached? I read this comment after I did one side. Should have looked before I started.
vincent c PITA is an understatement...DO NOT take off the e brake cable ..do like Vincent c recommends ..they definitely down play that spring Is a bit&$
Yes I own a service repair shop “Byrd’s Automotive Services” and I have to say I don’t like doing rear drum brakes. Just make it easier for your self and do not detach the cable.
I detached the cable before seeing this comment fml
Do you have a video of replacing one of the rear axles on this truck?
+will kimbrell We have a video that shows how to remove the rear axle on the previous generation of these trucks that might help give you some insight on how to do your model. Here is the link! czcams.com/video/h6OfNMfqyMs/video.html
The second to last spring that you installed is supposed to go to the adjuster, not the brake shoe hook.
GRACIAS!!!!!!
Plz Make another video for the 03-06 Silverado.
How do we change the piece that had the e-brake to it because that didn’t come in the box with the new set of shoes
where did you get the shoes from? can not find them with holes for the bottom spring or pin to hild the adjuster lever
phillip rentz did you ever find part number
They have 2 different styles for these years, I did the same thing and went back and got the others I have an 09
did you have to place a pin into the opposite shoe and how did you do it?
Jim Thorpe same here. It came with the pin. But it's not a screw in. You just pop it back I guess. It's pretty tight
I just tapped it in the used a punch to set it tight. if no punch screw driver worked just as well.
Would love to see how he would do the parking brake cable by himself
Good video but use high temperature brake grease for the backing plate pads, not white grease. Also, the lug nut torque is 140 ft-lbs, not 100 ft-lbs!
Do you have to bleed the them or no?
had brakes done now brake pedal pulsates like abs is active but no abs light
You do not need to disconnect the park brake cable at the bottom. You can disconnect the lever piece by removing the clip on the back of the pin at the top which you have to do anyway to put the new shoe on. The tension on that spring makes it darn near impossible to get back on.
+Gtarst - Thanks for the tip! And thanks for watching our video too!
Wish I would’ve done this. I can’t get mine back on 😢
how often would you replace rear wheel cyl.
Just when it needs to be replaced. It's not a routinely serviced part, similar to calipers. You just replace it when it stops working like it should. Hope this helps you out. 1aauto.com?CZcams&CTA%20Comment&ATony 866-403-3393
100+ years of automobile engineering and we're still using drum brakes. Boggles my tiny little mind.
james allen what is insane is they are way more difficult to replace then disk brake jobs but cost half half the price as disk brake jobs.
When it comes to parking brakes, they're hard to beat.
More brake surface, very helpful when loaded or pulling a loaded trailer.
We'll have to suck that one up!!! LOL
GM DID install rear discs on their 1/2 ton trucks but had so many warranty returns they went back to drums. Rear discs just couldn't take the punishment put on them with heavy loads or heavy trailers. No big deal...I've gotten 220k out of my rear drums on my 08 Silverado. I would have already done 4 or 5 disc brake jobs considering I actually use the truck to work as a truck. IF everyone who owned them just hauled kids around and got groceries rear discs would be fine...
Dude where are u from that a Chevy still looks that clean underneath?
I want to say that the man I trust ..Leo Guillen ..did my back rear brake on my 97 Chevy suburban ..mind you he has done brake jobs before .ok ..as I took a test run i found myself stranded n i had to call my brother in law n my sis for help..i also called Leo but he shows up w no tools no nothing...I think this man had wanted me to have a accident or die.why do you do me like this Leo ..really I am the only one he fucks over many n many times again..I still don't learn cuz I am still with him thinking that he does love me...but after today I see that he just wants me hurt broke n with out anything. Homeless n all ..I am not comfortable living in that sick sick house. ..
NEED HELP! Ok so if my truck is in park then I put it in reverse to back out as soon as I go back into drive to pull away my breakes squeak really loud as if the breaks are being applied but I'm in drive please help
+TX militia It's possible the moving parts of the brakes need to be cleaned and lubricated. They could be sticking as you roll backwards and then forwards. The small amount of drag makes a squeaking noise.
I have my adjuster all the way down and still have a lot of resistance. Anyone have any tips?
Are they really still using drum brakes in 2013? I think its funny because my 10+ cars that I've owned have always had 4 wheel discs, even my 73 Benz. Nice instructional video though as usual.
After finishing my brake job my parking break goes all the way to the floor when set. Did I do something wrong?
+euphony745 not necessarily. Does it hold the vehicle in place when you try to drive with it on? If so, you're fine. 1aauto.com 866-403-3393
What diameter m10 bolt? There are quite a few
Don’t take the E-brake bracket off the line connection. Just take the shoe off from the bracket. Much easier than trying to get that bracket back on.
My dash gave me a message saying (service brake system) now I checked my front brakes and they were still good, I have drums in the back and those needed to be replaced they were metal to metal. After i replace them the same message was still on my dash do you know what can be Caussing this message to appear?
You have to clear the code...Advance Auto may do that for you...
Check brake fluid level
Does anybody have the exact spec on that m10 helper bolt to remove the drum?
How to bleed your brake on a 2006 GMC Sahara pickupb
2006 GMC SAHara pickup
I think just m10 coarse what i used
Mike F can someone plz specify on the 10mm bolt? I can't view the comment responses
M10 x 1.5mm thread pitch
Does anyone know the part number for the replacement brake shoes for this model, the only one i can find is the set with the large spring not the smaller tension spring at the bottom of the shoes.
+Preston Helm The only set of brake shoes we have for these models is part number 1ABPS03323. Thanks for watching.
What about the adjustment in the little slot window
Lug nuts should be torqued to 140 ft lbs according to the Haynes manual for my 2010
Mine are different. I have a Denali 6.2 AWD. My rear brakes are way diffrent.
just like to say that you do not have to take the ebrake line out u just take the clip from the top off with the washer thats it
Is it alright to use brake cleaner and just really get the insides squeaky clean of all that old brake residue and then use the lube/anti-seize on the friction points afterwards? Also, can you clean off the springs with brane cleaner and make them clean? I know they will get dirty again, but a bit of extra maintenance may help?
Yes you can use brake cleaner to clean off the springs and brake hardware inside the drums, that pretty much what it's made for. Have a great day! 1aauto.com 888-844-3393
did they make it different from 06-08?
+Jp Blanco It should be the same process as the one shown in this video
Why didn't you give the brake an initial adjustment? That brake is way loose.
Where is the ordering link? Would like to order a kit
+Snyder Tools Here is a link to the brake drum hardware kit for the vehicle shown www.1aauto.com/2011-chevy-silverado-1500-brake-hardware/y-mo-c/2011-1716-247?CZcams&CTA%20Comment& Here is a link to the brake shoes shown. Hope this helps you out goo.gl/uZR7P6
What if after you adjustment and brake drum still won't go on
i cannot find the parts on your website for this
+Clay Swartz Thanks for watching. We currently do not carry this particular replacement part. 1aauto.com
Is this the same process for a 2012 gmc sierra ?
It should be the same procedure on your 2012.
sweet, this is going to be a great project this summer thanks guys :)
It would have been helpful, and saved many folks, I would imagine, alot of time and frustration, had you mentioned that the blue spring only attaches to ONE of the brackets on the primary brake pad, and then attaches to the automatic extension adjuster(the L shaped piece of metal that otherwise just dangles there, waiting to fall off every time you try to move anything). Do you overdub the narration after shooting the video? If not, I can't believe your mechanic didnt say anything! Very, very pissed off I was, due to you leaving out that simple little, yet very critical thing!
I have a 2008 Silverado and its a completely different drum setup in the rear..
sstevocamaro Me too and these damn guys wont explain that kind!
sstevocamaro Me too. I have a NBS 2007 and instead of the pin holding each shoe on, it has a wishbone-shaped rod.
These trucks had 2 types of rear drum brakes and one type of rear disc brake available for the 1500 series.
Right! my 2008 has that pain in ass big single spring. Must be because this one is 4WD.
2006 GMC 1500 same thing not this set up at all.
Makes me think twice about ordering from them and get wrong parts, lose another week waiting for, hopefully the correct set
