    Louis Sullivan is my favorite architect. I'm glad to hear him referenced! He did a lot of beautiful things, and that quote was about trying to find an American style of architecture after so much echoed from other places in unimpressive and simply derivative ways. I'm a nerd.
    This boat has a lot of DNA relating it to Thomas Gillmer's Blue Moon... my cockpit is so so similar. Raised deck 'midships, but this lil guy has a sweep on that bulwarks like a Stone Horse. NOICE. It's got me! -Anne

    I've had the pleasure of sailing on this boat. Let me tell you, it is ALL THAT! Her fine captain entertained many guests in that spacious and comfortable cockpit, gracing Narragansett Bay with her powerful cutter rig, The sheets are easy to handle, and the helm is light and responsive as she drives to windward. It is such a handsomely crafted vessel and so well cared for, I told the skipper it was a museum class boat, a description Cap'n Q used also.

      I saw this boat (or one just like her...) tied up in Portsmouth, NH, back in the 80s. She has such a different - and very clean - look, that I couldn't
      work out what she was... In its own way, this boat is exotic. I was shocked to see here that she was an Ericson - not that Ericson doesn't build nice boats. She's just so not a part of a "line" of boats that share design and finish details...

I love everything about it but the galley but that wouldn't be to hard to redesign. The engine access is amazing albeit a little under powered for my liking but then again she is an extremely capable sailor from the look of things. If I had the 25k I'd already be in the process of making this my new cruising boat as I bet she'd be a dream to bomb around on in the Bahamas.

    I have helmed the Fazisi (sometimes with 6 for more than a week) and no matter the weather, what I missed on many other boats, no matter the size, was mast - line of sight - LED displays. Usually mounted low just below my foremost bow deck line angle. (I see all there, for me) Or higher on the mast pointed down to lower on the helm than in my direct line of sight.
    Everything(!) in LARGE bright, straight-line, middle-of-line helm/wheel hub-centered projected displays. Never had to take my eyes away or blink at night for the change from the display lights to the next course adjustment - out there.
    Simplicity is everything on a 24-hour helm team - especially at night in steep rollers/storms. Watch way far out in a Maxi,
    you will be there before you think.
    And I love the need for speed - even at 2 up, 4 down, on a 4-hour rotation. Oh to be young again. but damn, windburn is a good thing

The steering system was different in my dad's, the wheel was mounted on a pedestal in the center of the cockpit sole. I think the system here is better, more direct. I like the emergency tiller receptacle too. His head the Volvo 3cyl diesel I believe. The ceiling was teak stripping, not naugahyde. The V berth had the filler piece with a fitted cushion. I almost fell out of my seat when I saw this week’s episode. I just bought one of these beauties last winter and sailed her all season. She just got hauled out for the winter. I can confirm, they are a dream to sail. I have a lot of work to do to get mine in to this condition.
    Many have asked about steering and dealing with the throttle. By standing to the front or side of the helm you can steer, operate the main sheet and deal with dock lines without getting the knobs of the wheel hooked on your clothes or safety gear.
    “Why not just have a tiller?”, some have asked? It’s largely due to operational space. If you have company in the cockpit, you are going to be whacking people in the head when operating the barn-door sized rudder with a tiller.
    It is certainly an unconventional design. But, it it is quite practical.
    Originally, they came available with a little seat that sat on top of the box that contains the steering mechanism. I have only seen one 36C that still has that little seat.

    @ra1ftoob457 Před rokem +1

    OK, it wasn't at all evident in the video, and I can't imagine how this box has survived for 40ish years, but...... that shippy looking box housing the steering gear is identical to the one on the smaller sistership Independence 31. Way back in '77-'78, I chartered the 31 in Ft Lauderdale. We were supposed to go to Bimini overnight, but, it was blowing steady 25 from the NE. The square waves were too much, so, we decided to pull into Gummint Cut in Miami. Round about 2 AM, we turned west into the channel. Ya know, with the rock jetties on either side. Well, that steering equipment box decided it was time. It fell apart. The front vertical cover was fastened into the PLYWOOD sides with woodscrews INTO THE PLYS. I screamed at my brother to wake up and pull the sails down. I ran past the mast, blowing the halyards on the way. I grabbed the anchor chain, which, conveniently, had a nice knot just below the beautiful chromed hawsehole cover. That ripped out of the deck (picture Incredible Hulk) with chain and rode. First miracle: we stopped 30 feet from the south rock jetty. Called securitay, CG towed us in, left us at the Chalk's seaplane dock on the north side of the channel. Second miracle: the night watchman let me use the Chalks machine shop and supply room. I made aluminum corner brackets for the collapsed box. I repaired the box. We left at 7 AM before the Chalks people got in to work. We all lived happily ever after. Moral: Please don't ever fasten boxes together with wood screws into the edge of your plywood. Amen.

    Well Crap! Here ya go. I'm thinking that I'll watch "Just one more" of your oh so amazing boat "tours." So "not gonna lie". I was just overwhelmed with the idea of "enjoyment." Yea I was thinking "I am really enjoying this video" ~ probably kudos to Randall. ~ So I make a decision to pop on down to make a comment about feeling "enjoyment." Much to my surprise there, lo and behold, is my comment, says 7 months ago, with an "Oh my goodness" ~ not once but three times. Must be the ballroom dancing. ✨😉✨

    Very nice boat. The boat is very pretty and beautifully maintained. This particular boat looks like a development of the flush decked Ericson 39. The sail plan seems to be a hybrid between a modern high aspect main with a small self tacking jib in that the main is relatively high aspect, but it still supports a big genoa. The boat should sail nicely in a bit of wind with the staysail alone. The beam is extreme for a 36 footer of that vintage. It makes my 11' beam Allied 36 look svelte and that is saying something. That boat is a real tank though at nearly 3,000 lbs more than my Allied 36's 14,400 lbs. The propane "locker" and the fuel tank are both issues that will need to be addressed since either will cause the boat to fail survey. Using an apparently unsecured, above decks, "gas" tank below decks is an absolute no no. So that tank has to go. A small day tank is a good idea, but the implementation is really bad. Such a tank either needs its own on deck fill or to be plumbed to the main tank with a transfer pump. The same goes for the propane which needs to be in a sealed locker with an overboard vent out the bottom of the locker if it is below decks. I would also install a primary fuel filter since changing the on engine filter in a seaway is pretty much impossible without making a big mess. Incidentally comparing that steering system to an Edson worm gear is an apples and grapefruit comparison. The only similarity is the aft oriented steering shaft. I also do not like the long unsupported shaft that leads to the wheel. If someone falls against that wheel it could bend that shaft which would make steering the boat interesting at best.

      @YachtHunters  Před rokem +2

      And the engine was rarely used based on the size of the fuel tank so it should have many years left in it

      Typically, boats depreciate more like cars… the sturdier builds retain their value better than the ones with simpler construction. In these Covid times it’s seems like all bets are off as the rush to buy boats has driven the market up and there doesn’t seem to be enough inventory to satisfy the demand… it seems like covid + inflation is pushing the boat market a bit higher than what we saw 2 years ago

    Not sure if it is common usage but we used to call the forward "cockpit" a "well deck". Slightly different usage than on military ships I think but since it has solid bulwarks I think it's a valid term in this case.

    Gorgeous, well preserved boat! Id much prefer a tiller to the worm great steering. I know it's supposed to be very durable but I've never actually understood why a designer would employ this type of steering over a simple tiller. The more simple the better for most if not all things. With a tiller you also get better feedback from the rudder and you could fit at least one more person in that cockpit.
