  • We are time traveling this week :) to the 21st century where we take a look at a 2001 Bavaria 40 sailboat for sale that looks brand new to us. It's a design by J&J for Bavaria Yachts with a practically new Volvo engine and recently replaced teak deck. Just a great example of a lovely coastal cruising or bluewater sailboat for sale

I sailed a few days on a similar vintage Bavaria 42 around Narragansett bay and it was absolutely wonderful, cruising 7+ knots easily in moderate winds. The extra two feet gets you a second aft cabin, so with three of us on the boat everybody had their own room. Insane luxury!

The boats you are featuring have meant so much to the families who owned them. This is a sparkling way to look at how well they treated these treasures and what they meant to the people who’s lives passed through those of the ships they loved. Thank you

Nice video thx. In Europe we have plenty of Bavarias in all size. But the quality you can not compare to high price german cars. On the contrary, the Bavarias are known as low cost, low to medium quality yachts. If you looking to compare to Merceds, you need other boats like Sunbeam, X-Yachts, Hallberg Rassy, Solaris, Cirius, Amel, Contest ....👍😎

I thought your score was too high on this one, but the overall cleanliness was superb. There were too many nays for me. I disliked the extreme aft of helm. It felt unsafe and I think that stern would be difficult to manage for dinghy entrance and exit an also for taking swims or trying to use for scuba. The nav station wasn’t comfortable for sitting and using as a work station. I look at what sailing Uma did with their Pearson and the design they ended up with is perfect for 2022. In the end though I imagine this boat is more intended for the cruise down the River taking friends out for the day. The ample size of the saloon and comfy leather seats. Captain and Ran-Day, I love the snippets of smooth jazz you choose for this channel. So relaxing. Thank you for making these educational vlogs, sprinkled with your humor. I look forward to seeing you both every week.

Don´t forget that Bavaria worked hard for bad reputation. They put spax screws where others bolt through. And don't forget they lost a keel., 6 small bolts should hold a 2 m keel. So think twice before going into open water with a Bavaria.

Another fine production to take me away to the promised land of marine life. I'm still reviewing the video to find the ever elusive Raycor filter, I agree with the captain that it just has to be there somewhere, probably so conspicuous that we just aren't seeing it. Love the rounded corners, the push latches, the generous hatches, the sunken windlass and the rigging that would even make me feel safe single handing down the Hudson. Thank you both for 40 minutes of glassy eyed drooling and a far away look that has people wondering if I've been at the bottle again. Looking forward to the next one !

That is such a well designed boat. As well designed as anything I've seen on my own
search for my cruiser / live aboard. And so far as I can see, nothing to replace. She looks like you could load her with food and supplies. Top off the tanks. And head to anywhere or everywhere. The only thing that springs to mind is the absence of a water maker. For cruising remote areas. Not sure if there was a radar. Other than that. Perfect. For some reason, I'd got it into my head that Bavaria were more VW, as opposed to Mercedes.
I earnestly appreciate you setting me right, on that score.
Sincere thanks gentlemen. From a hot and sunny North Coast of Northern Ireland.

Impeccable layout in so many ways. No overhead handrails below is what it is. The way the galley rather well locks you in in front of the stove was very nice. Nav station was gorgeous but I would have rather preferred a slope to the chart table. The engine access and that of the water gear in the aft head locker was to die for. The thickness of the teak on deck looked good for at least 50 years of service properly kept by the camera lens. The in mast furling I am never much a fan for but,,,,,,,,,,,,,at least this setup was manual and not electric. The furniture below was purely incredible. From the joinery to the hardware it was splendid. The layout to the lockers as per the owners situating things for easy access was a large plus. The positive side of the forward loo prt to stbd is the the door opened inward to it so you won't go flying out very easily.

Chef Phil here again, Captain Q and Randy.
Just watched this video which I realize is going backwards but somehow missed this one.
Love this boat with all the beautiful woodwork below and was amazed because it is only 21 years old. Always assumed the newer boats didn't have much woodwork but I'm a novice.
Must admit the only thing I didn't like about this boat was the aft or main cabin. Looks like not much breathing space above your body. When Captain Q was lying down in there it looked to me like there was only about 6" of space above is face until he hit the ceiling. Morbidly reminded me of being in a coffin! I'm guessing this is from the cockpit area intruding down into the cabin's ceiling space. Maybe it was the angle of the camera but that's what it looked like to me even though Captain Q said it was fine.
By the way, I noticed the Dinty More can inside the cabinet in the kitchen, er, galley🤣👍

We hope to start with our Bavaria Ocean 40 from 2001 in about two years from Europe. Will let you know when we are there 😂

For same price, also European built (but not designed), check out 1971 McCurdy 46 FROYA, currently lying in CT. Just back from Newport Bermuda Race. Little sister to Carina, but fiberglass (instead of aluminum) built in Holland by Maas. Turnkey ready to win ocean races (Newport Bermuda was 2nd in class to Carina, and 1st overall for all-amateur crew)!

Thanks for the video. Great content as always. Thanks!
I have to ask though: are your international viewers going to see a cruise and tour of the 12 meter that features in your intro? That would be a treat.

Nice to see a newer boat, if for no other reason to contrast with the classic rideas. Would like more. Although, at 40 minutes it would have been easier to be looking a nice Hinckley for that entire time.

I was kind of having strong thoughts if getting a Bavaria as my next Sailboat, and I think you've just reinforced those thoughts. thank you both very much for this look around of a really nice boat. Best Wishes. Bob. 👍eta a PS. In Mast Furling mainsail. I've had a chat with a few Sailmakers about these, as was really wary of the friction wear and tear with battened Nainsails. One confirmed that they make Triradial dacron Mainsails, have sold quite a number, and compared to a conventional Crosscut Battened mean, a Triradial has only a slight loss of performance to a battened sail, with a pretty much irrelevant amount of wear and tear, and significantly improved furling reliability. A bit more expensive than a cross cut dacron battened sail, but could easily pay for itself over a few years of cruising use I think? With regular valeting service, a Triradial dacron Sail could stay I'm great shape for up to 20 years Cruising I reckon. Bob.

Like the idea of a roller furling mains'l but would prefer it be in-boom furling. If it jams you can still take down the sail, or even reef it if its set up for it. If an in-mast furling mains'l jams all you can do is let it flog. Also, the in-mast roller furling mains'l moves the center of effort forward much more as its furled than an in-boom furling sail does. Anyway, just my $0.02 on that issue.
These production boats are gorgeous and many people take them across oceans, but I have heard many serious, respected offshore sailors say that they would never cross an ocean in a production boat like this with a bolted on keel and spade rudder due to the risk of losing either or both in a hard grounding or from striking an object at sea, like a slightly submerged container. At the very least I would equip the stern with some gudgeons and have an emergency rudder available to hang from them in the event of losing rudder function due to grounding or striking something at sea. Wouldn't be that difficult to set up I don't think. But definitely a great coastal cruiser and very comfortable liveaboard.

Nice find! Her condition is amazing and the price appropriate if not a little low. There is a lot to like here for most people looking for a coastal cruiser and this one is perfect for that. For me, the helm position is worrisome in weather but fine for a coastal boat where you can run back in to the dock, I would not want to get caught in a blow on her. It should be mandatory for any boat with a capsized ratio of over 2 to be named "Tippy". :D All kidding aside, I do like her and someone will snap her up quickly.

Wow, that is the first time I have heard someone say a positive about a deck stepped mast and it makes sense. Why I love this channel. I love the classic designs, especially anything Alberg, but the newer boats have some nice features, especially as I get older. (Walk through transoms, easier single handing and plenty of comfort for the misses) My thoughts are, what ever gets people out sailing. Are you two going to Indianapolis?

I almost wrote, if that;s a Bavaria, you’ve lost a viewer.. there is nothing classic about a Bavaria. Fair play, the older ones (pre 2006) were much better built than the new ones and you’ve found a lovely one here. Bavarias are often referred to here in Europe as ‘Tuappaware’. They’re mass produced and not ‘classic’ at all.. and essentially charter boat fleet material. Lovely to read all the comments though and people seemed to really love her.
