  • If you want racy, luxe, and a bluewater sailboat, we've got it this week. A classic NY40 Racer designed by Doug Peterson. The NY40 was part of a one-design class designed for the New York Yacht Club members and around 29 of them were made. Ideally suited to do some heavy offshore bluewater sailing and ready to go - she's already on a mooring!!

It looks so clean and well kept. I wasn't expecting to have that kind of headroom down below, looks perfectly comfortable.
There's something special about racing boats - and this one has a lot of that special something.

Just for the fun of it, can we get Captain Q to review a modern mass production boat? A Jeanneau, Beneteau, or a Halberg-Rassy maybe? I know his expertise lies elsewhere but it would be interesting to hear his take on these newer boats.

What an interesting boat this week I’ve never seen before and I really like the design. The clean deck, the ability to walk forward. The ability to really see the sails and tune everything. How much fun to sail in a longer race, overnighting, speeding through the night, being with friends. I also liked the design of the hatch and companionway. It looks so safe from waves drowning the cockpit. I imagine just sitting up and swing legs around to go down the companionway. I loved the true nav station and the tight galley designed to keep you more stable. Thanks Captain and Ran-day.

Found that true so many times myself and in those instances when it you do get around to changing things later, you do have that 'foundation' of understanding to do things better! Dean

Not a cruiser for certain, but an amazing boat! Love the design and the resto/maintenance is beyond argument. How do they stack up against other vintage 40’ vessels in racing terms?
Not the boat for me - I’m a comfort cruiser - something with a waterline though - an Island Packet is still a top choice for me, as an idea of my type of vessel - two masts cutter rigged, high combings in a centre cockpit, stern master cabin layout. Full keel, skeg hung rudder - no blades, please, 48’ to 55’ is perfect. Lots of space/births for guest “sailors” 😁 but wonderfully comfortable for the skipper and first mate.
You guys are getting very very good at this! I’ve watched your evolution and you two are ready for prime time!
Keep ‘em coming guys! (looking forward to further word on Randy’s progress on his vintage vessel)

Well, that is a nice ride! The interior layout is spectacular- even for today's lines! (4) Four! midship berths! Yowza! Doug Peterson's mid 1970's IOR rules (pregnant waist, slab sides) looks great but demands at least 15 degrees of heel to achieve max speed (annoying) but- so well rigged for racing! Rigging has definitely been updated! It's almost a deal, like a "let's bring out the checkbook- seriously!" other than it's 43 years old! I can't imagine re-wiring that thing, although what we could see of the bilges were painted & dry with ZERO indication of prior H2O. So much to love- I could see someone teetering on the edge of the over $1,000 for a full marine survey! I'd prolly take that beast around the world & be somewhat happy, but- I'm obviously a glutton for punishment! Thank you both- spectacular video & a truly delicious yacht for the discerning buyer.

NYYC Past Commodore Rob James passed away last year, and he was a real stalwart supported of the NY 40 Class, and his dark green hulled Carronade was one of the ones that was campaigned the longest. Interesting that the hulls were laid up in Louisiana, I think, then finished in the superb Palmer Johnson yard in Wisconsin (hence the interior quality), The boat in this video looks like the best surviving example of the series, in terms of condition. They also raced one-design with C&C 40s and NA 40s on long island Sound. In light air, you wanted to be on the C&C (the NY 40s were heavier), but in 12-15 knots + of breeze, the NY 40 dominated.

Captain, just to chime in. 25 years ago I crewed on a San Diego to Ensenada race aboard a Peterson designed Serendipity 43....similar to this, but the NY has the slightly raised “dog house” deck which really is a nice feature (the 43 was flat). My point is that even back then it cost a fortune to keep one of these old battle wagons “race ready”....might be interesting to see what a set of new sails would set you back for today....second mortgage, anyone? Depends on whether you’d be flying a traditional spinnaker or not… likely around 8 to have enough for each watch… or maybe just one enthusiastic captain 😉

@@m1k3droid The point I was trying to get make, is that although this may qualify as a "bluewater" boat, mostly due to it's stout build, it's probably one of the last boats that I can think of, that I would want to go cruising, or do an ocean crossing in.
This boat was built with one purpose in mind, and that is racing. It's pounds hard through the surf, as opposed to riding the waves. Something that will have you wanting to turn tail, and head back towards land after about a week of taking the abuse of it's less than cushy ride.
After working as crew on one of these for 15 years, the best advice I can offer anyone is, if you're looking for a boat to go cruising with, avoid this one at all costs. You'll only be disappointed with it in the end.
Now, if you want to field a competitive racer that handicaps really well, this is a great place to start.
      Just my opinion.

My 1974 swan 38, very similar to this one, easily hits 8+knots to windward at 32 AWA - points like a witch and cleaves the heavy seas instead of them acting as a handbrake. I’ve had production boats before (late mode 2009 Jeanneau’s) that didn’t come close..

Well. I'm shocked. I thought you were a bit stingy on the scoring on this one - however; I was totally seduced by the brightwork below decks. Had me drooling. Not a fan of the small sink, so a point off for that. And the details everywhere; makes me wonder why cruising boats don't adopt some of the finer things this racer has. ($$$ I suppose). Dang, another really nice boat.
