But he is doing the right thing, he was honest with her, you dont fall in love only because reason and logic, the bad thing would have been that he told her that he loves her back even though it was a lie. And rem doesnt want to leave Emilia back either, the answer from Subaru in the end was she really wants to hear. Remember that the Rem you see now is because Subaru chose to rescue her, someone without emotions who actually killed him a couple of times, was totally suspicious of him, and even hate him. In all those situations the only one who always trusted Subaru was Emilia, even when he behaved suspiciously. Rem change because Subaru saw her as a valuable friend for who she is and not as a replacement for her twin sister, and when she hear that, she smile for the first time in this serie, and then she fall in love. I think many forget the beginning of their relationship with Rem, and because of how great Rem was in this episode, they stop taking into account the past.
A ton of people hate Subaru for choosing Emilia which is understandable, but a CZcamsr called Echidnut made a pretty good video explaining why Subaru loves Emilia and not Rem that's worth anyone curious checking out. I think even though Subaru was selfish as hell this episode, talking about running away and etc., he wasn't in the wrong by rejecting Rem. He shot her down after her confession instead of trying to lead her on, and there aren't really any other ways he could've dealt with that (though he could've toned down the amount of salt in Rem's wounds lol, "I want to make Emilia smile" and all). Not to mention, Rem brutally murdering Subaru a few times must be hard for any normal person to forgive and forget, so it would make sense if that had some sort of traumatic effect which made him unable to love Rem in the same way as he does Emilia.

Emilia is almost literally the ONLY person that was never hostile to Subaru, he started to liking her because how good of a person she was and how she helped him by just kindness and then it grew and grew the more time they spent together ( Subaru had many loops to spent time with her ) Even when they had their big discussion in episode 13, she made a contract with Crush to keep helping him, when in her eyes Subaru should have been a piece of trash that almost ruins her dream. People get blinded by Rem because the sudden screentime and sacrifices she does ignoring how she killed and tortured him, Subaru never showed love to Rem until she confessed, there is no reason why he was going to be suddenly "Yeah I love you too".
Yeah. And people don't take into account Subaru's backstory, which is revealed in season 2 ep 4. Emilia was also the only one to accept Subaru's friendship despite how weird he was. Also, if you look at his shelf. She's totally his type. So that helps, too.
It’s not about the confession. It’s the way in which it was done. Also, Emilia is just very naive and not nearly as perceptive as any other character in this show lol. Rem was sceptical because, unlike Emilia, she can actually smell the witches’ scent. She killed him for very good reasons and guess for whose sake? Yes, Emilia’s. So yes, it makes sense that Subaru likes Emilia, but not for the reasons you mentioned
Think biggest thing is Rem knew Subaru loved Emilia. That's why she turned him down. And Subaru didn't want to lead her on so he was 100% honest with her. He didn't want to run away with her cause he loved her that way, but because she was an easy out. He was admitting he was being selfish and not considering her happiness. Also, Rem's love is very similar to Subaru's love for Emilia. She's become fixated cause he did that one sacrificial thing that pulled her out of her hole. Def one of the great episodes of the series. 20 minutes of monologues. And gratz for making it through 5 episodes of pure despair.
I hated that part not only because he turned down Rem BUT mainly it's how he said "I love Emilia" it felt like a cold slap on the face and sounded so emotionless, literally he had more emotions when he was borderline insane/dead inside or when he's at his lowest talking shit about himself than when he said "I love Emilia".
@@JDVN7 It's meant to be... I don't know what emotion he could have added that would have made it easier to say/take? He was stating it matter of fact. And there's a TON of emotion you're ignoring. It's a guilty confession/admission since he knows it's gonna hurt Rem (but lying or leading would be worse). It's solemn cause he's at an emotionally exhausted/depressed point (he's a bit manic here), the adrenaline has worn off.

I've seen a lot of rejections in anime and believe me "I love Emilia" part was one of the worst ones. What bothers me the most about this narrative decision, is that Subaru's only real reason for loving Emilia is this love-at-first-sight BS. Had the writer given him anything more tangible as a reason to choose Emilia over Rem (who has done the most for Subaru), fans probably wouldn't have been as pissed off about it.
@@arsenelupin9697 The show had given much more than love at first sight. First impressions are important, but definitely not all that has been presented. I think the real moment he fell for her was when he noticed she was wearing the flower pin given to her by the appa stand guy's lost daughter. It showed Subaru a glimpse into her nature as genuinely good natured, something he saw confirmed multiple times. Emilia was the one that (as cheesy as it is) offered the lap pillow and all the emotional elements associated with that. Namely, she noticed his crumbling mental state and went out of her way to address it. Emilia has healed him multiple times, especially meaningfully to Subaru when he woke up after the mabeast attack and she had fallen asleep from exhaustion from attending/watching over him all night. Chemistry is a big thing. Subaru's joking and teasing with Emilia (and Puck) has definitely been more developed and wholesome and bi-directional than his with Rem. Also there's fan theories on how much The Witch's relationship in all of this may be impacting his perception of things.
Fun Facts: #1 Nagatsuki Tappei(the author) works as a Butcher. He would think about plot development while dealing with the meat. Sometimes he will cut meat and yelling Subaru's name at the same time. #2 - When being asked why did he torture Subaru so much, he said because it's fun, but then explained that the protagonist grow stronger from adversity, this kind of character is the best. So to keep the protagonist constantly develops, he put so much torture in the story. He likes the protagonist and hopes that he can do better. But he thinks currently he still treats Subaru kindly, maybe he will make the situation more difficult in the future. #3 - His favorite character is "EMT! EMT! EMT!" "Emilia-tan is Seriously an Angel"
I loved Subaru for not leading Rem on in this scene and just being straight up about who he actually loves, I would’ve hated him for being a sleazebag if he got with her just because she’s the “easier” option That being said I was still bummed about the rejection since I just want my girl Rem to be happy! At this point in the season I completely forgot that I also liked Emilia since she’s gotten little screen time this arc, but hopefully you guys end up liking how this plays out for the rest of the season as much as I did!
in this story the easy choice is not right...you choose you you want to be with not cause its "easy"..thats a dumb way to look at it ...no writer sets up that dynamic..oh the guy can choose the easy girl or the challenge..wtf?..is this how people see things?...usually if someone likes you in fiction then you choose them over someone who doesn't unless story wise it makes less sense so from that aspect good change of pace ...what guy has ego like that to think they can choose?...in reality maybe or a harem maybe but not in a isekai shounen most shoujo an sennin even

While I can understand your opinions, I 100% respect Subaru's decision. He's experienced some unimaginable trauma, so it's understandable for him to look for a "shortcut" to happiness in trying to run away with Rem. He was only being honest when he told her his feelings. Honestly, people bringing up Rem killing Subaru is so stupid at this point. Emilia's pet also killed Subaru, like a bug, without as much as malice for him. But no one hates Emilia for it, even thought it's as much her responsibility as Rem's responsibility was protecting the mansion from the Cult.
At this point Rem has displayed many more times how loyal and affectionate she was to him. Yea he tells her the truth but the way this episode was set up and the timing he said it made it so much worse. Basically to the point of cringing. Also the author makes Rem totally illogical. No girl is gonna do this type of stuff for a dude acting like this to her. Subaru can be seen as being straight up with her but he is still a huge asshole and immature no matter what. If he were an actual mature character it would totally make sense to at least be willing to try and understand and build a relationship with this girl who has displayed loyalty so many times and brought you back from insanity. But instead he acts like a child and still prioritizes a "crush" on a girl that has literally told and displayed she can't understand Subaru compared to the understanding Rem obviously has for him and has been out of the picture for so much of season 1 while Rem has always stayed in the picture with Subaru. Of course it changes in season 2 but that is after Subaru actually accomplishes something and the author probably realized he isn't doing shit with Emilia like he should be..... I don't know.... I really have the feeling the author fucked up because he immediately changes the way emilia acts and without spoiling it he takes Rem out of the picture. It feels all screwed up in a way. Kind of like a stupid shitty school romance novel made into an anime.

(A fall with a rope that would kill him if it was realistic) She even interogated him with torture before she killed him. That will leave a mental scar for sure. Edit: Rewatched the scene, does sound like it was Ram's wind attack that did the killing blow, but that doesn't change the fact that Rem tortured him, and lets be honest, if it wasn't for Ram's wind attack, Subaru would die from blood loss because of Rem.

And if you're referring to the 'Wrath If', Reinhard was pretty banged up from fighting Cecils and being stabbed by Emilia. I'd like to think Puck merked him after, just cuz i'm sick of how god damn overpowered he is, but sadly it's never confirmed.
I'm always amazed how most of this episode is just two characters talking yet it's incredibly engrossing seeing both characters expressing themselves. Yet it really tells us what this story's about and Subaru regains his motivation. Masterpiece of an episode.
Subaru expressed his true feelings, and saying that to Rem, as hard it can be, should earns respect, as he just wanted to be sincere with her, he didn't want to play or use her feelings or to deceive her.

Everytime i watch someone reaction to this episode, fans forget, Subaru is the same as Rem. Emilia saved his life tons of times before, when he first got to the new world, that's when he fell in love and did the same thing Rem is doing now. Plus im pretty sure Rem already knew how he felt but i was happy that he was honest with her up front.

This scene can not be understood by cultural differences. Most Japanese think that Subaru is sincere. He could cheat on Emilia, but he did not. He is a gentleman who talks honestly to REM about Emilia and refuses her confession politely. The Japanese think that humility is virtue. They often complain about themselves. They do not feel embarrassed about it. On the contrary, even if they have the confidence to do things perfectly, they often conceal it. They think that it is arrogant to show confidence to others. I'm sorry if my English is not good.
it may seem hash but the bluntness of the scene and rem still being willing to help with no ill will is very eastern..girls are not devastated like in the west when they are rejected but when they are they make sure the fans fell it not just the character...even if someone rejects you the girl's feeling's wont change ...loyalty is a virtue

I had no idea Humility IS a virtue in western society, more so since a little budhism and hinduism teachings has transfered over here. But confidence is extremely important in western society From your first impression to your success in life and relationship with others. More obvious example is that if you are not confidence in school, you will most likely be bullied. If you dont have confidence you will not be able to bargain. Hey, to be fair, Subaru offered to run away and live the rest of his life with her and Rem turned HIM down, because she knows he loves Emilia. She knows that if he and her ran off and started a life, he'd be lying to himself and to her. That he'd hate himself if he did. Love isn't simple; Subaru doesn't romantically love Rem, and I'm sorry but her confessing her love for him and helping him get back to his feet isn't any reason for him to suddenly stop loving Emilia, which he's been o the level about since the start of the show. People shouldn't measure relationships on a sliding scale, it's not like my affection for one person is a 10 and for another is an 8, and with the right words they could become an 11 isn't right or fair to anyone. Note that Rem isn't angry, she didn't confess to Subaru to earn his love or his pity. She told Subaru she loved him because she knew that's what he needed to hear: that he could be loved. It becomes more obvious as the show goes on, but Rem is totally happy just being close to Subaru. If anything, people are being really selfish by pushing Rem and Subaru together and saying: "now kiss!" I agree that it'd be healthier for Rem to find someone who could love her back, but to be fair that's her issue, not Subaru's. For that matter, you guys are sleeping on the fact that Subaru is LITERALLY depressed, as in, he was depressed before he transferred to another world. It's made pretty blatant here. He's not just depressed because he's failing, dying and has lost the respect of the one he loves. He's depressed because he got everything he pinned for in reality; he found someone he loved, became someone people relied on and saved everyone as a hero, but nothing had really changed because HE hadn't changed when things got hard he still ran away, still pretended to be trying hard. As someone who also loves Rem but isnt as frantically crazy about her as most of the Re:Zero fanbase seems to be....let me say just this: Isnt it much better for both of them to say straight to her face his true feelings? I think people are less mad at Subaru rejecting Rem and more mad at his immature and selfish way of dealing with it. Obviously this episode marks the start of his development and growth which comes full circle in season 2, so it was like a starting line for him in a way.

Also in the scene by the fruit stand after his second death in Arc 3 he was trying to tell her something before the Save Point Guy shooed them away. I disagree, he definitely loves Rem to some degree, he just loves Emilia more. He's mentioned that Rem holds the number 2 place in his heart. But in the grand scheme of things, I suppose that doesn't mean anything if the number one place in your heart is already taken.
@@waltz4life I'd say he loves them in different ways. Before parting he told Rem he won't accept future without her by his side, and would die if anything were to happen to her. He never said anything like that to Emilia. There were many times in the novel when Subaru picks himself up by thoughts of Rem, almost like he's conditioned himself. It's funny how Ram uses it too, to get him into fighting spirit.

I never understood the notion of "tossing aside" someone you love that doesnt love you back. Like I wanna be with that person. That doesnt change cause they dont want to be with me in the way I want to be with them. So while being friends with them might not go the way I wished it wouldve gone, I will still very much enjoy being friends with them. Why would I let someone go, nevermind "toss them aside", that I wanted to get even close to. Thats like having 10k dollars with the wish of wanting a million, but not even taking the 10k when you end up not being able to get the million. ...... Thats a very lame comparison.

There is this weird double standard that some people had, where when Subaru got “ugly” and claimed that Emilia should return his affection because of everything he’s done for her. But then fans don’t notice the parallel: getting mad at Subaru not returning Rem’s feelings, despite everything she’s done for him.
It took four years, but it looks like the fandom has mostly gotten over this infamous moment, judging from the comments. Everyone lost their minds four years ago, but if you really think long and hard about it, this isn't like any other stereotypical anime where Rem wins over Subaru and he ends up with the person who loves him. Now everyone understands Subaru a little bit better. Can't believe Subaru was criticized so much for loving someone, when love is such a complicated emotion to feel. It's not very rational. I thought it was pretty obvious. That's why Subaru is the most human anime character ever. And Rem was fine with this decision. She's actually the most mature girl, I've ever seen. If Subaru accepted her confession, that would've been wrong, and she knows that. She would've again been leaving the Subaru she loves behind if she just went along with Subaru's acceptance, because she knows he loves Emilia. And she's just fine with being by his side. Besides, Rem is his #2.
Not to mention the fact that everyone seems to forget that Rem rejected Subaru’s offer to elope together FIRST. She already JUST HAD the chance to take him and turned it down because she KNEW it wasn’t going to be the Subaru she fell in love with. The Subaru she loves would never give up and abandon someone he loves because the situation is difficult. It was as if the entire fandom had a collective short term memory problem 😂
This is the episode that truly separates the fanbase. The Re: Zero fanbase was pretty friendly and fun to be around....until Subaru says those triggering words. It's like a hot knife cutting through butter. Personally, it made me respect Subaru so much more after he said what he said. People seem to have this notion that he is obligated to feel a certain way for Rem because of the things she went through for him, as memories that only he has. That's....just not how it works, and it actually does Rem a disservice. If this were any other MC, I'm convinced that scene would've been reduced to that MC blushing all over the place while trying and failing to spit out the words in a awkward attempt to keep this "will they, won't they" game going for arcs to come. But that's not what we got. We have Subaru here, rejecting but respecting Rem's love for him while also reaffirming *his* love for Emilia. In Episodes 12 through 17, his "love" had been very toxic, to the point of driving Emilia away because he could not come up with the words to describe how he felt about her, and instead, made her feel indebted to him through his own pride after having saved her. But still, Subaru cannot forget what Emilia did for him in Ep 8. Sure, it wasn't as big of a spectacle as the things that Rem did, but Subaru had been dying, putting all this stress on himself, all of this is eating at his mind and Emilia was the first one who showed Subaru the attention he needed and deserved and that saved his life, in more ways than one. It saved him from himself and it saved him from Rem and Ram. You could argue it was because of *Emilia* that allowed Rem to be a bit more open minded about Subaru because she was the one that spoke up in his defense and said "Subaru is a good person" and then Subaru took care of the rest with his heroism. It can be hard to see and accept because Subaru just sort of risked his life for her right out the gate and always had this anime otaku infatuation, but Ep 8 is the defining moment for his love, just as Ep 11 is for Rem's love. Subaru loves Emilia because she saved him from himself. Rem loves Subaru because he saved her from herself, and now, Rem was able to repay that good will in this episode. And this arc is working on Subaru repaying Emilia's good will. This episode is so much more than just "I love Emilia", but unfortunately, it will never be more than that, cause this episode (and 17) is just the start of one of many memes that Re: Zero would become known for. I honestly wish more people would be open minded to this, because this is the first episode we've seen Subaru laugh the way he did after episodes of physical and mental torture. But all anyone can see is "I love Emilia" and then hate Subaru with all their might. The first time I saw this, I honestly cried and felt a huge weight being lifted off my shoulders for Subaru. I typed what I felt in the comment section of the website, and all I received were comments about how much Subaru could go fuck himself after this episode, as if everything he went through somehow didn't matter anymore. You guys can acknowledge how great of an episode this was, and it was just 2 people talking for like 20 minutes. I respect the fact that you guys can acknowledge more than just "I love Emilia", but many others didn't, and that makes discussion damn near impossible. Back then, at least. Rem Cultists were *brutal* in the comment section back then.
yeah, this breaks the anime logic as well. i actually like the path sabaru took! he’s actually honest with Rem! And Rem accepted his rejection! However they both respected each other and helped each other. I understand why people are mad. They’re used to that stigma of that Anime Logic and they have to grow out of that box
It's easy to forget Emilia since she hasnt had much screen time in awhile, but Emilia had a similar moment with Subaru resting his head on her lap and comforting him when he was having a mental breakdown. At least Subaru was being honest about his feelings and was up front about it. Plus I am pretty sure Rem already knew Subaru was devoted to Emilia, like Felix said earlier it was pretty obvious. Rem would rather see him be the hero facing the problems for Emilia than be a coward and run away with her, and she still has hope they will be together even if he likes Emilia now. Also Rem DID kill Subaru a couple times, it interesting to look at these things from different points of view as the audience, Rem and the others only see the times Subaru succeeds and form their opinions from that. While Subaru and the audience see all the failures, hatred, and times he messes up.
You two are really dropping the ball in your discussion. Subaru did nothing wrong. Subaru was broken and hopeless from all the trauma he'd been through so it's only natural he'd try to run away from the problem eventually. No one "deserves" any relationship; entitlement is a toxic mentality. Forming a deep bond of trust through the struggles they'd been through does not mean Subaru should necessarily have fallen in (romantic) love with Rem since romantic attraction doesn't have a strict formula like that. Emilia walking out on Subaru is not comparable to this situation whatsoever... I'll leave it at that. I understand you two like Rem a lot, but you shouldn't let your biases affect your reasoning to this extent.
100% agree. It's not like Subaru doesn't care about Rem. He deeply cares. Its just as you say not in a romantic way. "Kick this guy to the curb." What a generalized, narrow minded view on that. Are there people that use others in a relationship only for their gain? Yeah. Is that what Subaru is doing. No. I'd say their relationship is closer than friends but just not at lovers, as tempted as Subaru was. Subaru was super mature by being honest.
When I first watched this episode years ago, I had the same reaction to the infamous, "I love Emilia" line. I was extremely disappointed in Subaru. However, after re-watching it, I can understand why Subaru feels the way he does. You have to realize, he's known these girls probably 10x longer than they've known him, since their memories keep getting reset. After all the deaths, all the times he re-lived the same series of events with multiple horrid outcomes, the one person that was always kind, gentle and caring towards him no matter the circumstances was Emilia. It's just in her nature. So, it only makes sense that after the repeated hell he's gone through that he'd have fallen in love with her, so his feelings make sense. Now granted, Rem grew to love him over time through his actions, and I do believe that within the context of the show, her love for Subaru is more genuine and less superficial than his love for Emilia, but I (and hopefully you) can understand where he's coming from. Not to mention that he ultimately chose not to string Rem along but rather opted for the blunt truth, even though he knew it would hurt her, something I personally always respect. I think he made the right decision. You can't always choose who you fall in love with and while it's clear that Subaru has very deep feelings for Rem, I get why he said he loves Emilia. Just sucks from an outside, viewer's perspective. I'll always be rooting for Rem though and hope she wins him over in the end.
I love watching reactors react to this episode just for that moment when Subaru says "I love Emilia." Almost everyone gets frustrated with him initially before they can take time to think about the situation. Rem is so pure, considering she's a demon. You did a fantastic job editing this.

Please Remember Subaru is not entitled to Return Rem's Feelings, that's not how love works. You don't decide who you fall in love with. People shitting on Subaru for not choosing her are following the same mindset as NiceGuys who believe They're entitled to sex by women for being nice to them, helping them out. Fun fact, Subaru was ready to go away with Rem, in fact the author posted an IF story where this does indeed happen, known as the Sloth route, where Rem and Subaru run away and live on their own. So yeah, it was Rem who didn't want it to happen.
I've been waiting for your reaction to this episode and it was absolutely worth the wait! This is one of those rare anime episodes that sticks around in my head and is worth taking the time to process and digest after watching. Rem is amazing and Subaru's pain hurts to see. I'm impressed that a conversation between two characters could have me so invested. Unrequited love is painful.
I don't like when an isekai include a harem, but in this case, I think I undertand it. Rem felt in love with the Subaru that wants to save everyone even if she knows he loves Emilia. And Subaru probably loves Rem, but he only see Emilia. It's a really awkward love triangle, but I respect how Subaru was honest with her and how Rem doesn't try to ignore the his true feelings. I don't remember being pissed at Subaru the first time I watched this, cause I felt Rem knew what she was doing by setting Subaru back on his path. Later though, when I read the novel and Subaru's first confession (that was cut from the anime), I had even more respect for him.
tbh I feel like Subaru decided he loved Emilia before he really got to know her well enough to realistically love her. As mentioned, because of everything he has been through with Rem, it would have made more sense to love her. But as I like to say, we can't really control who our hearts fall in love with. Maybe he's still scarred from the fact that she did technically kill him twice...
The Rem and Suburu thing sparks a lot of debate but the way I see it, what Suburu wants for Emili is what Rem wants for Suburu. Suburu wants to make Emilia smile and help her achieve her goals. Rem wants Suburu to be happy and to succeed as well. She knows that in order for Suburu to be truly happy, he has to be with Emilia because she knows how much he loves her, and thats why she rejects his offer.
That beautiful character development where a few episodes back she wanted to kill him. Now she’s in love with him... Also. Two episodes back she said aishiteru instead of sukidesu which in japan is an “I love you” translation that no one uses because it’s the deepest form of “I love you” that you only say less than a handful of times in your life as a Japanese.
the chase is always more interesting in a isekai romance and emilia to be fair is naive and likeable/more virtuous overall to the story and she did not try to kill him nor is her and his bond bad per say

I think its funny how everyone wants to act like Subaru is wrong because he likes Emilia. Just because Rem decided to confessed to him does not mean that Subaru is supposed to instantly fall for Rem when he never liked her romantically like that in the first place.
Also, one of the reasons Subaru got in trouble in the first place is because he felt entitled to Emilia's love because he did nice things for her. And look where that landed Subaru. Nowhere positive. So why is Rem entitled to Subaru's love just because she did nice things for him? It goes both ways for both genders. If the feelings aren't mutual on both sides, then there is no relationship.
Loved your reaction to this, though I do have something I'd like to say. Honestly, I disagree with the take that it's unhealthy for Rem to be doing this with Subaru. I think at this point in the story, their relationship is actually one of the healthiest relationships Subaru has with anyone in the show, period, and remains this way for the rest of the season. It's far healthier for all of that information to be out there in the open; it hurts more not knowing if someone loves you back or not, having them not know that you love them and trying to get them to understand your feelings but them not understanding. And if Subaru, who wanted to spend his days with Emilia, would've actually run off with Rem instead, that would've been more unfair to Rem than him being honest and rejecting her feelings, because she wouldn't be living with someone who actually loves her back the same way she loves him. She would essentially be living a lie.

What Subaru has gone through would have ground most people (myself included) to dust, mentally and emotionally. And being unable to tell anyone about it just multiplies everything.
In the novel, Subaru loves both Emilia and Rem romantically and is open for a polygamy relationship if it’s okay with Emilia and Rem is fine to be his second wife.
So because she confesses to him he's obliged to return those feelings? Also are we gonna forget that this whole thing is literally a breakdown from the trauma of JUST dying for a third time? He could've handled it better but honestly, considering the circumstances I get that reaction to everything. Rem wasn't trying to get him to date her anyways, she was trying to get the subaru she loved back and she knows that subaru loves emilia. She said she'd only run away with him if he could do it with a smile on his face and she knows normal subaru couldn't do that. You're missing the point of the interaction if you're focusing on shipping these two. It's just not fair to fault subaru too hard here in my opinion.
There is an alternative story written by the author, about “if Subaru had run away with Rem”. They run away to an Asian style country and live married many years. Apparently a “certain someone” eventually stops Puck if he tries to destroy the world.
Fun fact: The author of the light novel makes alternate stories of what would happen if Subaru chose a sin instead of virtue. This is the situation in which the Sloth IF story would have happened if Rem chose to run with him. They move to another continent and live a long and wonderful life with two (so far) children. Also I respect his decision of being honest to Rem.
I am in the rem/subaru ship with most others... but there is 1 thing you have to remember. As a normal person would you be able to love the person that brutally tore your legs and arms off... then healed you so you wouldnt bleed to death... then tortured you by beating you with a metal chain while interrogating you? Also remember that by rezero's time line this was like 2 weeks ago... She brutally tortured and murdered him more than once ... LITERALLY less than 2 weeks ago... I understand that Rem is BY FARRRRR best girl. But from the stand point of a regular person and not an anime protag... I dont think I would feel comfortable even standing in the same room as her for yearsssss
It definitely is a tough subject, there isn't much to be said that you haven't said, I think it's worth noting that Subaru cares for Rem a lot, he just has Emilia as his #1, but Rem is best girl so I understand your pain. Also for clarity, the reason puck isn't in his true form more often is because he basically freezes everything automatically, killing everyone in the vicinity.

Everyone talkin about how Subarus line at the end is awful. But the entire pretense of that talk ended with a "... But" by Rem herself. She literally went into that confession knowing he loves emilia, but people self insert because i guess they don't think of the actual plot.
I’m very late on this Emilia vs Rem discussion, but I just wanted to type my thoughts out on the whole thing after reading a couple of comments and hearing y’all’s discussion at the end of the reaction. Obviously feeling bad for Rem in this situation is okay. It’s very heartbreaking for someone to lay their heart out for someone else, to ultimately end up being rejected, especially in the way that she was. But like a lot of people have commented, Emilia is also very special. Subaru’s love for Emilia is very similar to Rem’s love for Subaru. Subaru and Emilia have a very similar scene to this one in season 2 inside the gravesite, where Emilia is incredibly down on herself but Subaru see’s none of that and lists all the great things about her and encourages her to keep going. So I think it’s a bit unfair to knock Subaru here, considering his feelings are the exact same just for someone else. Yes it was selfish for Subaru to play with her heart by asking her to run away with him, but shiiit, remember all of the horror and tragedy he just went through. He just wants to escape from that hell he’s living in with someone that finally loves him. And I hate the “Emilia is too basic and too naive” narrative. Remember, this is an incredibly insecure and sheltered girl who the entire world hates just because she resembles someone else. She literally has no one but a single spirit, and she only gets to see Puck from 9-5 everyday. Of course she’s going to be a little basic and naive because she doesn’t know anything but her own struggles, but that doesn’t negate the pureness and kindness of her heart. And that’s what Subaru sees in her. Oddly enough, that’s what Rem sees in Subaru. I love Rem, she’s a fantastic character, but there’s definitely a bit of recency bias at this point in the show.
This here is the episode that took the show to the next level for me. The fact that this episode has next to no action or plot in it, but keeps the audience enthralled with nothing more than one on one character dialogue, blows my mind. It's not something you see very often outside of dedicated dramas. But this show takes two characters that we've known for ages, and strips away all the bluster and fakery and just has them be honest with themselves, each other, and the audience. It's incredible writing, not just in that scene, but in the journey that brought us here.
Girls, Subaru loves Rem (now, probably as a family), he even died for her in the second arc. He is simply in conflict because he comes from a monogamic society. On the other hand, Emilia was his anchor in this world. When he saved her the first time and she confessed her name to him, he for the first time felt that all his effort paid off. He found his reason for living (remember the first chapter). She gave him a place to belong and was by his side in the most difficult moments.
1. Puck can't stay in that form because he's under contract with Emilia taking mana directly from her and if he went to his true form he would probably kill her. This episode is amazing and as gut wrenching as Rem's rejection is after what had to be one of the greatest confessions in all of anime, I feel like everyone overlooks how powerful Subaru's confession is. Admitting that you are prideful, weak and empty. Rem can say that he saved her because she didn't live through the times when he couldn't, an MC with PTSD and the nature of his curse won't let him confide in anyone so he has to just keep it bottled in. And the rejection is gut wrenching but at least he didn't lead her on, and not only that but she kind of told him she was only interested in the him that wouldn't give up on Emilia.
You have to remember, Rem rejected his offer first at the beginning and then Subaru rejected her at the end, but technically Rem knew he was still in love with Emilia. In the end, they ended up back where they started but with a clearer perspective of where they both stand. Most beautiful episode. We need the what "IF" side story movie to be a real thing, "Re:Zero: Sloth IF -- Life in another world with Rem, from Zero"
People being genuinely angry at Subaru for choosing Emilia over Rem is stupid. Feelings don't change that easily and they certainly don't follow a metric of "the more good things I do for you, the more you should love me". That's how we get "nice guys" who believe that they are owed affection and love for doing things for the girls they love. Of course, I want Rem to get her happy ending, and if Subaru had chosen to return her affections, I would be all for it. But you can't say that "Subaru is a bad person for not falling in love with Rem" because that's just hypocritical as fuck and what started off this train of horrible events to begin with; Subaru attempting to white knight for Emilia without bothering to understand her or her situation out of a mistaken belief that she would love him no matter what. I'm relieved that Imon and Abby were able to move past their emotional reaction and be able to see all sides of the situation. They are right; it just sucks for Rem and that's really nobody's fault.

If we look at the actual chain of events, he saved her, twice, and then fell into a rut because he let that go to his head (which was fueled by his past, and not really something he could have helped given his mental state leading up to this point). The one who snaps him out of that rut is Rem. It would be more accurate to say that Rem saved him from himself. That said, I never said he didn’t have the choice. I was just airing frustration that he made a choice I found stupid. XD Which I am free to do, just as he is free to make that choice.
Imagine if the roles were reverse. What if Subaru said all those things to Rem, but then she said no, I love Tommy. But he is doing the right thing, he was honest with her, you dont fall in love only because reason and logic, the bad thing would have been that he told her that he loves her back even though it was a lie. And rem doesnt want to leave Emilia back either, the answer from Subaru in the end was she really wants to hear. Remember that the Rem you see now is because Subaru chose to rescue her, someone without emotions who actually killed him a couple of times, was totally suspicious of him, and even hate him. In all those situations the only one who always trusted Subaru was Emilia, even when he behaved suspiciously. Rem change because Subaru saw her as a valuable friend for who she is and not as a replacement for her twin sister, and when she hear that, she smile for the first time in this serie, and then she fall in love. I think many forget the beginning of their relationship with Rem, and because of how great Rem was in this episode, they stop taking into account the past.
A ton of people hate Subaru for choosing Emilia which is understandable, but a CZcamsr called Echidnut made a pretty good video explaining why Subaru loves Emilia and not Rem that's worth anyone curious checking out. I think even though Subaru was selfish as hell this episode, talking about running away and etc., he wasn't in the wrong by rejecting Rem. He shot her down after her confession instead of trying to lead her on, and there aren't really any other ways he could've dealt with that (though he could've toned down the amount of salt in Rem's wounds lol, "I want to make Emilia smile" and all). Not to mention, Rem brutally murdering Subaru a few times must be hard for any normal person to forgive and forget, so it would make sense if that had some sort of traumatic effect which made him unable to love Rem in the same way as he does Emilia.

Emilia is almost literally the ONLY person that was never hostile to Subaru, he started to liking her because how good of a person she was and how she helped him by just kindness and then it grew and grew the more time they spent together ( Subaru had many loops to spent time with her )
Even when they had their big discussion in episode 13, she made a contract with Crush to keep helping him, when in her eyes Subaru should have been a piece of trash that almost ruins her dream.
People get blinded by Rem because the sudden screentime and sacrifices she does ignoring how she killed and tortured him, Subaru never showed love to Rem until she confessed, there is no reason why he was going to be suddenly "Yeah I love you too".
Yeah. And people don't take into account Subaru's backstory, which is revealed in season 2 ep 4. Emilia was also the only one to accept Subaru's friendship despite how weird he was.

I can't wait for the second trial in the anime, it really shows how isolated he is/unable to accept other people.
Think biggest thing is Rem knew Subaru loved Emilia. That's why she turned him down. And Subaru didn't want to lead her on so he was 100% honest with her. He didn't want to run away with her cause he loved her that way, but because she was an easy out. He was admitting he was being selfish and not considering her happiness.
Also, Rem's love is very similar to Subaru's love for Emilia. She's become fixated cause he did that one sacrificial thing that pulled her out of her hole.
Def one of the great episodes of the series. 20 minutes of monologues. And gratz for making it through 5 episodes of pure despair.
I hated that part not only because he turned down Rem BUT mainly it's how he said "I love Emilia" it felt like a cold slap on the face and sounded so emotionless, literally he had more emotions when he was borderline insane/dead inside or when he's at his lowest talking shit about himself than when he said "I love Emilia".

I've seen a lot of rejections in anime and believe me "I love Emilia" part was one of the worst ones.

What bothers me the most about this narrative decision, is that Subaru's only real reason for loving Emilia is this love-at-first-sight BS.
Had the writer given him anything more tangible as a reason to choose Emilia over Rem (who has done the most for Subaru), fans probably wouldn't have been as pissed off about it.
@@arsenelupin9697 The show had given much more than love at first sight. First impressions are important, but definitely not all that has been presented. I think the real moment he fell for her was when he noticed she was wearing the flower pin given to her by the appa stand guy's lost daughter. It showed Subaru a glimpse into her nature as genuinely good natured, something he saw confirmed multiple times.
Emilia was the one that (as cheesy as it is) offered the lap pillow and all the emotional elements associated with that. Namely, she noticed his crumbling mental state and went out of her way to address it.
Emilia has healed him multiple times, especially meaningfully to Subaru when he woke up after the mabeast attack and she had fallen asleep from exhaustion from attending/watching over him all night.
Chemistry is a big thing. Subaru's joking and teasing with Emilia (and Puck) has definitely been more developed and wholesome and bi-directional than his with Rem.
Also there's fan theories on how much The Witch's relationship in all of this may be impacting his perception of things.

#1 Nagatsuki Tappei(the author) works as a Butcher. He would think about plot development while dealing with the meat. Sometimes he will cut meat and yelling Subaru's name at the same time.
#2 - When being asked why did he torture Subaru so much, he said because it's fun, but then explained that the protagonist grow stronger from adversity, this kind of character is the best. So to keep the protagonist constantly develops, he put so much torture in the story. He likes the protagonist and hopes that he can do better. But he thinks currently he still treats Subaru kindly, maybe he will make the situation more difficult in the future.

Honestly, people bringing up Rem killing Subaru is so stupid at this point. Emilia's pet also killed Subaru, like a bug, without as much as malice for him. But no one hates Emilia for it, even thought it's as much her responsibility as Rem's responsibility was protecting the mansion from the Cult.
At this point Rem has displayed many more times how loyal and affectionate she was to him. Yea he tells her the truth but the way this episode was set up and the timing he said it made it so much worse. Basically to the point of cringing. Also the author makes Rem totally illogical. No girl is gonna do this type of stuff for a dude acting like this to her. Subaru can be seen as being straight up with her but he is still a huge asshole and immature no matter what. If he were an actual mature character it would totally make sense to at least be willing to try and understand and build a relationship with this girl who has displayed loyalty so many times and brought you back from insanity. But instead he acts like a child and still prioritizes a "crush" on a girl that has literally told and displayed she can't understand Subaru compared to the understanding Rem obviously has for him and has been out of the picture for so much of season 1 while Rem has always stayed in the picture with Subaru. Of course it changes in season 2 but that is after Subaru actually accomplishes something and the author probably realized he isn't doing shit with Emilia like he should be..... I don't know.... I really have the feeling the author fucked up because he immediately changes the way emilia acts and without spoiling it he takes Rem out of the picture. It feels all screwed up in a way. Kind of like a stupid shitty school romance novel made into an anime.

I'm always amazed how most of this episode is just two characters talking yet it's incredibly engrossing seeing both characters expressing themselves.
Yet it really tells us what this story's about and Subaru regains his motivation.

Everytime i watch someone reaction to this episode, fans forget, Subaru is the same as Rem. Emilia saved his life tons of times before, when he first got to the new world, that's when he fell in love and did the same thing Rem is doing now. Plus im pretty sure Rem already knew how he felt but i was happy that he was honest with her up front.

Hey, to be fair, Subaru offered to run away and live the rest of his life with her and Rem turned HIM down, because she knows he loves Emilia.
She knows that if he and her ran off and started a life, he'd be lying to himself and to her. That he'd hate himself if he did.
Love isn't simple; Subaru doesn't romantically love Rem, and I'm sorry but her confessing her love for him and helping him get back to his feet isn't any reason for him to suddenly stop loving Emilia, which he's been o the level about since the start of the show.
People shouldn't measure relationships on a sliding scale, it's not like my affection for one person is a 10 and for another is an 8, and with the right words they could become an 11 isn't right or fair to anyone.
Note that Rem isn't angry, she didn't confess to Subaru to earn his love or his pity. She told Subaru she loved him because she knew that's what he needed to hear: that he could be loved. It becomes more obvious as the show goes on, but Rem is totally happy just being close to Subaru. If anything, people are being really selfish by pushing Rem and Subaru together and saying: "now kiss!"
I agree that it'd be healthier for Rem to find someone who could love her back, but to be fair that's her issue, not Subaru's.

I think people are less mad at Subaru rejecting Rem and more mad at his immature and selfish way of dealing with it. Obviously this episode marks the start of his development and growth which comes full circle in season 2, so it was like a starting line for him in a way.

It took four years, but it looks like the fandom has mostly gotten over this infamous moment, judging from the comments. Everyone lost their minds four years ago, but if you really think long and hard about it, this isn't like any other stereotypical anime where Rem wins over Subaru and he ends up with the person who loves him. Now everyone understands Subaru a little bit better. Can't believe Subaru was criticized so much for loving someone, when love is such a complicated emotion to feel. It's not very rational. I thought it was pretty obvious. That's why Subaru is the most human anime character ever.
And Rem was fine with this decision. She's actually the most mature girl, I've ever seen. If Subaru accepted her confession, that would've been wrong, and she knows that. She would've again been leaving the Subaru she loves behind if she just went along with Subaru's acceptance, because she knows he loves Emilia. And she's just fine with being by his side. Besides, Rem is his #2.
Not to mention the fact that everyone seems to forget that Rem rejected Subaru’s offer to elope together FIRST.

This is the episode that truly separates the fanbase. The Re: Zero fanbase was pretty friendly and fun to be around....until Subaru says those triggering words. It's like a hot knife cutting through butter. Personally, it made me respect Subaru so much more after he said what he said. People seem to have this notion that he is obligated to feel a certain way for Rem because of the things she went through for him, as memories that only he has. That's....just not how it works, and it actually does Rem a disservice.
If this were any other MC, I'm convinced that scene would've been reduced to that MC blushing all over the place while trying and failing to spit out the words in a awkward attempt to keep this "will they, won't they" game going for arcs to come. But that's not what we got. We have Subaru here, rejecting but respecting Rem's love for him while also reaffirming *his* love for Emilia.
In Episodes 12 through 17, his "love" had been very toxic, to the point of driving Emilia away because he could not come up with the words to describe how he felt about her, and instead, made her feel indebted to him through his own pride after having saved her. But still, Subaru cannot forget what Emilia did for him in Ep 8. Sure, it wasn't as big of a spectacle as the things that Rem did, but Subaru had been dying, putting all this stress on himself, all of this is eating at his mind and Emilia was the first one who showed Subaru the attention he needed and deserved and that saved his life, in more ways than one. It saved him from himself and it saved him from Rem and Ram. You could argue it was because of *Emilia* that allowed Rem to be a bit more open minded about Subaru because she was the one that spoke up in his defense and said "Subaru is a good person" and then Subaru took care of the rest with his heroism. It can be hard to see and accept because Subaru just sort of risked his life for her right out the gate and always had this anime otaku infatuation, but Ep 8 is the defining moment for his love, just as Ep 11 is for Rem's love.
Subaru loves Emilia because she saved him from himself. Rem loves Subaru because he saved her from herself, and now, Rem was able to repay that good will in this episode. And this arc is working on Subaru repaying Emilia's good will. This episode is so much more than just "I love Emilia", but unfortunately, it will never be more than that, cause this episode (and 17) is just the start of one of many memes that Re: Zero would become known for.
I honestly wish more people would be open minded to this, because this is the first episode we've seen Subaru laugh the way he did after episodes of physical and mental torture. But all anyone can see is "I love Emilia" and then hate Subaru with all their might. The first time I saw this, I honestly cried and felt a huge weight being lifted off my shoulders for Subaru. I typed what I felt in the comment section of the website, and all I received were comments about how much Subaru could go fuck himself after this episode, as if everything he went through somehow didn't matter anymore. You guys can acknowledge how great of an episode this was, and it was just 2 people talking for like 20 minutes. I respect the fact that you guys can acknowledge more than just "I love Emilia", but many others didn't, and that makes discussion damn near impossible. Back then, at least.

It's easy to forget Emilia since she hasnt had much screen time in awhile, but Emilia had a similar moment with Subaru resting his head on her lap and comforting him when he was having a mental breakdown. At least Subaru was being honest about his feelings and was up front about it. Plus I am pretty sure Rem already knew Subaru was devoted to Emilia, like Felix said earlier it was pretty obvious. Rem would rather see him be the hero facing the problems for Emilia than be a coward and run away with her, and she still has hope they will be together even if he likes Emilia now. Also Rem DID kill Subaru a couple times, it interesting to look at these things from different points of view as the audience, Rem and the others only see the times Subaru succeeds and form their opinions from that. While Subaru and the audience see all the failures, hatred, and times he messes up.
You two are really dropping the ball in your discussion. Subaru did nothing wrong. Subaru was broken and hopeless from all the trauma he'd been through so it's only natural he'd try to run away from the problem eventually. No one "deserves" any relationship; entitlement is a toxic mentality. Forming a deep bond of trust through the struggles they'd been through does not mean Subaru should necessarily have fallen in (romantic) love with Rem since romantic attraction doesn't have a strict formula like that. Emilia walking out on Subaru is not comparable to this situation whatsoever... I'll leave it at that. When I first watched this episode years ago, I had the same reaction to the infamous, "I love Emilia" line. I was extremely disappointed in Subaru. However, after re-watching it, I can understand why Subaru feels the way he does. You have to realize, he's known these girls probably 10x longer than they've known him, since their memories keep getting reset. After all the deaths, all the times he re-lived the same series of events with multiple horrid outcomes, the one person that was always kind, gentle and caring towards him no matter the circumstances was Emilia. It's just in her nature. So, it only makes sense that after the repeated hell he's gone through that he'd have fallen in love with her, so his feelings make sense.
Now granted, Rem grew to love him over time through his actions, and I do believe that within the context of the show, her love for Subaru is more genuine and less superficial than his love for Emilia, but I (and hopefully you) can understand where he's coming from. Not to mention that he ultimately chose not to string Rem along but rather opted for the blunt truth, even though he knew it would hurt her, something I personally always respect. I think he made the right decision.
You can't always choose who you fall in love with and while it's clear that Subaru has very deep feelings for Rem, I get why he said he loves Emilia. Just sucks from an outside, viewer's perspective. I'll always be rooting for Rem though and hope she wins him over in the end.

Fun fact, Subaru was ready to go away with Rem, in fact the author posted an IF story where this does indeed happen, known as the Sloth route, where Rem and Subaru run away and live on their own.

I've been waiting for your reaction to this episode and it was absolutely worth the wait! This is one of those rare anime episodes that sticks around in my head and is worth taking the time to process and digest after watching. Rem is amazing and Subaru's pain hurts to see. I'm impressed that a conversation between two characters could have me so invested. Unrequited love is painful.
I don't like when an isekai include a harem, but in this case, I think I undertand it. Rem felt in love with the Subaru that wants to save everyone even if she knows he loves Emilia. And Subaru probably loves Rem, but he only see Emilia. It's a really awkward love triangle, but I respect how Subaru was honest with her and how Rem doesn't try to ignore the his true feelings.

I don't remember being pissed at Subaru the first time I watched this, cause I felt Rem knew what she was doing by setting Subaru back on his path.
Later though, when I read the novel and Subaru's first confession (that was cut from the anime), I had even more respect for him.
tbh I feel like Subaru decided he loved Emilia before he really got to know her well enough to realistically love her. The Rem and Suburu thing sparks a lot of debate but the way I see it, what Suburu wants for Emili is what Rem wants for Suburu. Suburu wants to make Emilia smile and help her achieve her goals. Rem wants Suburu to be happy and to succeed as well. I think its funny how everyone wants to act like Subaru is wrong because he likes Emilia. Just because Rem decided to confessed to him does not mean that Subaru is supposed to instantly fall for Rem when he never liked her romantically like that in the first place.
Also, one of the reasons Subaru got in trouble in the first place is because he felt entitled to Emilia's love because he did nice things for her. And look where that landed Subaru. Nowhere positive. So why is Rem entitled to Subaru's love just because she did nice things for him? It goes both ways for both genders. If the feelings aren't mutual on both sides, then there is no relationship.

Loved your reaction to this, though I do have something I'd like to say. Honestly, I disagree with the take that it's unhealthy for Rem to be doing this with Subaru. I think at this point in the story, their relationship is actually one of the healthiest relationships Subaru has with anyone in the show, period, and remains this way for the rest of the season. It's far healthier for all of that information to be out there in the open; it hurts more not knowing if someone loves you back or not, having them not know that you love them and trying to get them to understand your feelings but them not understanding. And if Subaru, who wanted to spend his days with Emilia, would've actually run off with Rem instead, that would've been more unfair to Rem than him being honest and rejecting her feelings, because she wouldn't be living with someone who actually loves her back the same way she loves him. She would essentially be living a lie.

What Subaru has gone through would have ground most people (myself included) to dust, mentally and emotionally. And being unable to tell anyone about it just multiplies everything.

In the novel, Subaru loves both Emilia and Rem romantically and is open for a polygamy relationship if it’s okay with Emilia and Rem is fine to be his second wife.

So because she confesses to him he's obliged to return those feelings? Also are we gonna forget that this whole thing is literally a breakdown from the trauma of JUST dying for a third time? He could've handled it better but honestly, considering the circumstances I get that reaction to everything. Rem wasn't trying to get him to date her anyways, she was trying to get the subaru she loved back and she knows that subaru loves emilia. She said she'd only run away with him if he could do it with a smile on his face and she knows normal subaru couldn't do that. You're missing the point of the interaction if you're focusing on shipping these two.
It's just not fair to fault subaru too hard here in my opinion.
Even if he ran away with Rem, they would have died later when Puck went on a rampage after Emilia is killed.
There is an alternative story written by the author, about “if Subaru had run away with Rem”. They run away to an Asian style country and live married many years. Apparently a “certain someone” eventually stops Puck if he tries to destroy the world.

Fun fact: The author of the light novel makes alternate stories of what would happen if Subaru chose a sin instead of virtue. This is the situation in which the Sloth IF story would have happened if Rem chose to run with him. They move to another continent and live a long and wonderful life with two (so far) children.
Also I respect his decision of being honest to Rem.

I am in the rem/subaru ship with most others... but there is 1 thing you have to remember. As a normal person would you be able to love the person that brutally tore your legs and arms off... then healed you so you wouldnt bleed to death... then tortured you by beating you with a metal chain while interrogating you?
Also remember that by rezero's time line this was like 2 weeks ago... She brutally tortured and murdered him more than once ... LITERALLY less than 2 weeks ago...
I understand that Rem is BY FARRRRR best girl. But from the stand point of a regular person and not an anime protag... I dont think I would feel comfortable even standing in the same room as her for yearsssss

It definitely is a tough subject, there isn't much to be said that you haven't said, I think it's worth noting that Subaru cares for Rem a lot, he just has Emilia as his #1, but Rem is best girl so I understand your pain.
Also for clarity, the reason puck isn't in his true form more often is because he basically freezes everything automatically, killing everyone in the vicinity.
Don't worry about the edition!!! Sometimes most of us appreciate more the quiet and sentimental reaction that those where people tend to talks the whole time even ruining a complete scene. This was just epic, just like we needed to be. You don't talk in this episode, you feel it!!!!

Everyone talkin about how Subarus line at the end is awful. But the entire pretense of that talk ended with a "... But" by Rem herself. She literally went into that confession knowing he loves emilia, but people self insert because i guess they don't think of the actual plot.

I’m very late on this Emilia vs Rem discussion, but I just wanted to type my thoughts out on the whole thing after reading a couple of comments and hearing y’all’s discussion at the end of the reaction.
Obviously feeling bad for Rem in this situation is okay. It’s very heartbreaking for someone to lay their heart out for someone else, to ultimately end up being rejected, especially in the way that she was. But like a lot of people have commented, Emilia is also very special. Subaru’s love for Emilia is very similar to Rem’s love for Subaru. Subaru and Emilia have a very similar scene to this one in season 2 inside the gravesite, where Emilia is incredibly down on herself but Subaru see’s none of that and lists all the great things about her and encourages her to keep going. So I think it’s a bit unfair to knock Subaru here, considering his feelings are the exact same just for someone else. Yes it was selfish for Subaru to play with her heart by asking her to run away with him, but shiiit, remember all of the horror and tragedy he just went through. He just wants to escape from that hell he’s living in with someone that finally loves him.
And I hate the “Emilia is too basic and too naive” narrative. Remember, this is an incredibly insecure and sheltered girl who the entire world hates just because she resembles someone else. She literally has no one but a single spirit, and she only gets to see Puck from 9-5 everyday. Of course she’s going to be a little basic and naive because she doesn’t know anything but her own struggles, but that doesn’t negate the pureness and kindness of her heart. And that’s what Subaru sees in her. Oddly enough, that’s what Rem sees in Subaru.
I love Rem, she’s a fantastic character, but there’s definitely a bit of recency bias at this point in the show.

This here is the episode that took the show to the next level for me. The fact that this episode has next to no action or plot in it, but keeps the audience enthralled with nothing more than one on one character dialogue, blows my mind. It's not something you see very often outside of dedicated dramas. But this show takes two characters that we've known for ages, and strips away all the bluster and fakery and just has them be honest with themselves, each other, and the audience. It's incredible writing, not just in that scene, but in the journey that brought us here.

Girls, Subaru loves Rem (now, probably as a family), he even died for her in the second arc. He is simply in conflict because he comes from a monogamic society. On the other hand, Emilia was his anchor in this world. When he saved her the first time and she confessed her name to him, he for the first time felt that all his effort paid off. He found his reason for living (remember the first chapter). She gave him a place to belong and was by his side in the most difficult moments.

1. Puck can't stay in that form because he's under contract with Emilia taking mana directly from her and if he went to his true form he would probably kill her. This episode is amazing and as gut wrenching as Rem's rejection is after what had to be one of the greatest confessions in all of anime, I feel like everyone overlooks how powerful Subaru's confession is. Admitting that you are prideful, weak and empty. Rem can say that he saved her because she didn't live through the times when he couldn't, an MC with PTSD and the nature of his curse won't let him confide in anyone so he has to just keep it bottled in. And the rejection is gut wrenching but at least he didn't lead her on, and not only that but she kind of told him she was only interested in the him that wouldn't give up on Emilia.
You have to remember, Rem rejected his offer first at the beginning and then Subaru rejected her at the end, but technically Rem knew he was still in love with Emilia. In the end, they ended up back where they started but with a clearer perspective of where they both stand. Most beautiful episode.
We need the what "IF" side story movie to be a real thing, "Re:Zero: Sloth IF -- Life in another world with Rem, from Zero"
People being genuinely angry at Subaru for choosing Emilia over Rem is stupid. Feelings don't change that easily and they certainly don't follow a metric of "the more good things I do for you, the more you should love me". That's how we get "nice guys" who believe that they are owed affection and love for doing things for the girls they love. Of course, I want Rem to get her happy ending, and if Subaru had chosen to return her affections, I would be all for it. But you can't say that "Subaru is a bad person for not falling in love with Rem" because that's just hypocritical as fuck and what started off this train of horrible events to begin with; Subaru attempting to white knight for Emilia without bothering to understand her or her situation out of a mistaken belief that she would love him no matter what.
I'm relieved that Imon and Abby were able to move past their emotional reaction and be able to see all sides of the situation. They are right; it just sucks for Rem and that's really nobody's fault.
Honestly, I’d be punching Subaru here. XD If someone like Rem said all that to me, there’s no way in hell I’d be able to love anyone else. I’d be so pissed at him because I’d be so mad that he’s rejecting the literal embodiment of sunshine in front of him because he wants Emilia that he doesn’t have nearly as much chemistry with. I’d definitely make it clear that if Emilia rejects him in the end, I got another punch waiting because FUCK man. You wasted all that time, no doubt caused Rem so much pain, and you didn’t even get the girl you wanted in the end. You better not treat Rem as your rebound or both of us are gonna die.

If we look at the actual chain of events, he saved her, twice, and then fell into a rut because he let that go to his head (which was fueled by his past, and not really something he could have helped given his mental state leading up to this point). The one who snaps him out of that rut is Rem. It would be more accurate to say that Rem saved him from himself.
That said, I never said he didn’t have the choice. I was just airing frustration that he made a choice I found stupid. XD Which I am free to do, just as he is free to make that choice.

Imagine if the roles were reverse. What if Subaru said all those things to Rem, but then she said no, I love Tommy. Everyone would be ok with it because you don't have to love or get with someone just because they feel about you a certain way. I feel like this is a big double standard.
