Rem changed later after confirmation from Emilia that he's a good guy. and later when he saved her. This is the biggest difference I see in them. My guy already fell for Emilia I'll not say 1 is better But rem already knew he loves Emilia And in this ep If he could at least save rem he would have ran away if rem agreed.he prolly had enough But rem came in clutch. This whole first season is looking at different examples of one-sided love, Subaru-Emilia, Rem-Subaru, Betelgeuse-Witch. One of the basic tenets that is explored is that the ‘depth of love’ (or, ‘level of obsession’) doesn’t mean you’re owed anything back. However, Rem’s version of expressing it (unlike the other two) has a much better chance of ‘working’ (getting the other person to care too) because she’s not demanding anything in return, and not deluding herself (her intention this episode is to bring back the Subaru who cares so deeply for others and won’t give up, even though she knows he’s been in love with Emilia). Back in episode 15 she said she was happy to get to keep him to herself for a bit, and she could’ve cemented that here by taking his offer, but she doesn’t want to betray what she knows his true feelings to be because she truly cares for him, instead of only caring about her own feelings toward him (which is the case for the other two relationships, Betelgeuse-Witch is like an end-point devolved version of the obsession Subaru has toward Emilia before this point in season 1 I think).
I myself in Subaru’s shoes would value Rem much more than Emilia though. I never thought I’d really get attached to a character separately from a story, then Rem showed up and my heart is forever hers. Truly best girl
Also, the author isn’t trying to say that you’re not necessarily or not ideally allowed to love someone if they don’t love you back, but showing through Rem elements of a good outlook to have if you do love someone. Without correct intentions or outlooks, most one sided relationships develop problems in one form or another, such as outside obsessive creepiness or possessiveness, or loss of self worth of the lover

Oooo, that's awesome! I knew about the parallels between Subaru and Betelgeuse, but never thought of that one to Rem, how her love is also similar. Man, that's how you know the show is great, when the more you learn, the more you appreciate. Thank you for that character insight.
The episode which reveals which viewers failed to pay attention in class. One of the major themes this arc is that you are _not_ entitled to have your affections reciprocated, and to expect otherwise is selfish. Ironically, Rem understands this much better than the majority of her stans. Accepting a girl just because she happened to confess first would have been the easy way out, and that would have been a slap in her face because that's precisely the opposite of what she likes about him. Besides, she's not even remotely best girl, it's just that most of the top 5 haven't even appeared in the story yet.
What people often misunderstand about this episode - for reasons that are unclear to me, honestly, because it seemed fairly obvious when I watched it myself the first time - is that this isn't a "love confession" scene. Or rather, that the "confession" part of that concept accounts for _maybe_ 0.5% of Rem's reasoning for telling Subaru she loves him, and giving him the list of reasons why. The point here isn't that Rem is attempting to get him to reciprocate (never mind that confessing to someone, regardless of how nicely it's done, should ever entitle anyone to a reciprocation), the point is that she sees he's in a terrible mental place and spouting a whole lot of self-loathing, and so she uses her own feelings of love for him to counter-balance that loathing. Said feelings are genuine, but they're used here as an assurance, by Rem and for Subaru, that he can be loved, rather than as a mere declaration of love towards him. It's evident by paying even a little bit of attention to the scene and seeing that this is a back-and-forth, and that she's not really "confessing" at all, rather just responding to his claims that he's empty and ugly inside, by describing to him why she disagrees. The ultimate aim, of course, being to get him back on his feet, and not taking him out on a date or something. In other words, she's not trying to get him to see she, specifically, loves him. She's trying to get him to see _he is and can be loved,_ through her own feelings. Important distinction. If anything, it feels more like a therapy scene than a love confession scene.
You don't just give up your love just because another one confessed, Rem is the best girl, facts, but Subaru is loyal... he get the worse, give up, and Rem bring he back to the light, but didn't reset what he thinks about Emilia. She was there since the beginning, they both protect each other and all what he's doing is because of her. And of course, he likes Rem but damn I will not feel confortable with someone that killed me and tortured me, even if had their motives.

But even then, she tries to confort him, help when he need, try to keep him away from danger, she has the same protective will as Subaru, she has the same problems like ignoring about themselves to protect others, she brought someone she never met before in her house, help to recover, and even when he breaks her feelings she still cares about his health. Subaru has many motives to love Emilia, so of course he didn't choose Rem.
Lol, I get your frustration but I think Rem knew Subaru loved Emilia going into this but still chose to tell him these things. She knew she would get rejected, which makes it more heartbreaking and selfless that she still chose to confess to Subaru. She didn’t say it to receive any reciprocation, Subaru hated himself so deeply. The only way she knew how to help him was to SHOW HIM he is loved. She never planned to confess to him, it just happen to happen. Subaru has loved Emilia for about a month now, they survived a lot of shit together and she was there for him when no one else was when he first appeared in that world. It would actually be more shitty if he just immediately gave up on her just because Rem confessed to him. And thats not to say Subaru cant have feelings for Rem too, he has had no time to really think about that stuff rn. Even if she saved him and did all this stuff in this Subaru expected things from Emilia just because he loved her and wants to do things for her, Rem showed Subaru that love should be truly selfless. Thats why I think the rejection here is important for his character. Rem crying into his chest shows how human she is, she knew it would hurt. And Subaru probably doesn’t feel good rejecting her but him not being honest here would be more insulting to Rems character after she poured her heart out. It seems cruel but I think it was Subaru giving back the honesty she gave also: i really love your reactions! you notice the more emotional aspects of the story and are really open even when this story get so frustrating and difficult to watch at times! i never see reactors admit they’re wrong or go back on something they said
If I had to think of a reason why Subaru likes Emilia so much outside of simply falling for her, it would probably be because she's one of the very few people he's close with that haven't tried to kill him. Ram: Mercy killed him when Rem was torturing him, killed him regularly next loop anyway Roswaal: Tried to blow him up with magic in the loop where Subaru jumped off a cliff, but Betty intervened Rem: Murdered him in the hallway, tortured him very bad and for a long time next loop Puck: Frozen to death, Frozen to death + decapitated, frozen to death So out of the main cast, Beatrice and Emilia are the only people who haven't actively tried to kill him. For those keeping tally, this means that Puck officially takes world record for 'Killed Subaru the most'.
Girl rem tortured him in the beginning. In the lightnovel she tortured him for 1 hour straight. She would do it longer, but Ram pitied him and killed him. Emilia tortured him not even once. Of course he will love Emilia. Emilia was there when he put a mask on and she broke that mask, by giving him her leg to rest so he could cry his heart out. You can't dictate who someone is "supposed" to love. People who get upset with Subaru are just saying, "Well, if it was me, I'd fall for Rem like a meteor... even if it meant burning up in the atmosphere." Well, good for you, but this isn't a contest of who you think should be shipped with who. Dislike the story if it bothers you that much. Hate Subaru or whatever. But if you're thinking Subaru doesn't care about Rem, I'm here to tell you that you are wrong! He respects her enough to bring up how he feels, knowing that it might hurt her. She expected it entirely and "wanted" that because it's his truth.
Something to note now since it never really gets addressed in the anime save for one very short second before a certain reveal, but Subaru isn't rejecting Rem here. He is just reaffirming that he loves Emilia and wants to support her, which if you think about it would be crappy of him if he didn't say that at that point. Rem is No.2 to him but by no means any less than Emilia at No.1 is the takeaway.

Yes this episode is the end of the prologue of this story according to the author. Also you should consider the fact that Subaru couldn’t have told rem he only loves her because that would be a lie. He still has feelings for her but Emilia came first and it would be a lie and not like himself to forget all of that. You also need to remember that Rem didn’t exactly want an answer to her confession she wanted to bring Subaru back to normal so him saying “I love Emilia” shows that she succeeded.

In the books, Subaru ends up catching feelings for Rem a little while after this (while still having feelings for Emilia, which makes him feel like a bit of a scumbag) but that didn't end up making it into the anime.
I just think people's issues come from seeing love as a theme which only belongs in romance stories. Love is a theme in re zero in the sense of why they love each other, and what it leads them to or drives them to do. Subaru loves Emilia because she saved and inspired him from the day he got there, putting on a mask but panicking at losing everything from day one. He's never been truthful about the whole excited to be isekai'd thing, it was an unwanted escape from life when he could have made something of himself in Japan. But Emilia was who he used to make the most out of it and was also someone he was inspired by. Then when she left him he ran away from the issue over and over again before getting to this point where Rem makes him face the real issue. And the thing is... I hate the romance angle people are viewing it through, because this is Subaru progressing. When he drove Emilia away in the first place, Rem was there as a constant reminder of how to be honest with your feelings. She never said he saved her, or that she owed him, or that he doesn't know how much he helped her, or talk about her past, or that he doesn't understand, or expect him to reciprocate those feelings just because she owes him so much and now he HAS to let her sacrifice herself for him, he HAS to take this all as something she does for him. She doesn't expect him to love her back, and at her best shows how he knew from the very start he should have treated Emilia if he really loved her. And this is where Subaru starts learning from her. But when Subaru does it people suddenly find it cringe. Subaru saying he wants to help Emilia, that he loves her, and not saying all of his fighting from here on out is for her, is not dumping all of the guilt on Emilia or demanding anything back from her. Rem wouldn't be "an angel" if she didn't force Subaru to correct his previous path and say, now I'm going to stop this from happening because I love Emilia, because I want to help her achieve her goals and be treated better by the world. Rem would be the same as Subaru, expecting something in return for her self sacrifice. If this story followed in a more acceptable way through the romance focused lenses everyone uses, it wouldn't be narratively strong for it. It would be wish fulfillment, whether that's through Rem taking his hand and running away from her life as well, or Subaru softening his words to confirm the idea that Rem says this as a confession expecting a romantic response. Even if Subaru says "I think you're great but..." that's still a different scene, bscause Rem doesn't need that. Rem sees him as inspiration, that even as the failure she thought of herself as she isn't, that her being a weak oni doesn't matter and that her sister doesn't want any of the sacrifices she's putting at her feet because she accepted losing her horn long before Rem did.

The director distorted her entire character to give unnecessary screen time, those who only watch the anime think that Rem is a perfect little girl who did everything for Subaru, when in fact she already faked her own death to make him desperate and declare himself romantically for her, she tried to change his mind so he could convince Emilia to leave Rem to be his second wife, she has serious suicidal tendencies and an inferiority complex (in addition to the ridiculous emotional dependence she has on the Subaru), that being said, Satella is the best girl.

I wrote a long comment but it led to this quick summary of why this scene shouldn't be touched because of the romance putting people off. Re zero is exploring love between them as an extension of self love. What Rem needs from Subaru in exchange for loving him is him being the best version he can be. And loving himself. Because she fell in love with him for things which she couldn't accept in herself. That means the whole trying too hard at something when everyone says you're too weak. I don't see how this scene could go differently and be as good tbh. None of them should be pairing up, because then it would break down the love between them reflecting self love theme since they still have so many issues of their own. There's a reason romances are often stopped at the very start in re zero and it's because of this. It's like the opposite of "I can fix him", in fact you WON'T fix each other while being a couple. That's more codependency than love tbh. You can fix each other as friends with a budding romance which may or may not happen in the end instead, which is the re zero way.
I will always say, the execution could've been better with just a few changes to make it better, like say something like "you're perfect, but my feelings, my feelings, my love is for Emilia" It makes sense, you can't just change whom you love so quickly. We all know even having crush on someone only for them to be in a relationship later or from earlier, but you still cant suddenly change it. Its similar to getting over ex (probably), and would take time, but in this case he's never properly expressed himself tto Emilia. On top he's socially awkward, given start of this anime we know he was a recluse so no friends or social interactions either, hence he's bad at communication & has a protagonist/saviour complex from all the shows he watched.

What i said or wanted to say was that this particular scene in anime, even with the brilliant execution of an episode where the characters just spout dialogue at each other at the same place, is done so well that its amazing. What I would have liked to see more is the rephrasing of the way the dialogue of subaru was done to rem. Literally just 5 seconds after rem goes "ILY" he says the line thats become meme of "i love Emilia", and it would become a meme because its done without any preparation or even explanation of Subaru's POV before saying so, which is why people & first time reaction vids dont like it. Like it would've been so much better even if the line that i had written previously was said instead of what he said with something along the lines of "i appreciate you and acknowledge your feelings, thank you for that/them....but..., I love Emilia". I'm not a writer & English is literally my 3rd/4th language, yet i can tell that changing the way its said would've been better. (Bengali, Hindi & marathi being the others. However, Rem’s version of expressing it (unlike the other two) has a much better chance of ‘working’ (getting the other person to care too) because she’s not demanding anything in return, and not deluding herself (her intention this episode is to bring back the Subaru who cares so deeply for others and won’t give up, even though she knows he’s been in love with Emilia).
Back in episode 15 she said she was happy to get to keep him to herself for a bit, and she could’ve cemented that here by taking his offer, but she doesn’t want to betray what she knows his true feelings to be because she truly cares for him, instead of only caring about her own feelings toward him (which is the case for the other two relationships, Betelgeuse-Witch is like an end-point devolved version of the obsession Subaru has toward Emilia before this point in season 1 I think).
I myself in Subaru’s shoes would value Rem much more than Emilia though. I never thought I’d really get attached to a character separately from a story, then Rem showed up and my heart is forever hers. Truly best girl
Also, the author isn’t trying to say that you’re not necessarily or not ideally allowed to love someone if they don’t love you back, but showing through Rem elements of a good outlook to have if you do love someone. Without correct intentions or outlooks, most one sided relationships develop problems in one form or another, such as outside obsessive creepiness or possessiveness, or loss of self worth of the lover

The episode which reveals which viewers failed to pay attention in class. One of the major themes this arc is that you are _not_ entitled to have your affections reciprocated, and to expect otherwise is selfish.
Ironically, Rem understands this much better than the majority of her stans. Accepting a girl just because she happened to confess first would have been the easy way out, and that would have been a slap in her face because that's precisely the opposite of what she likes about him.
Besides, she's not even remotely best girl, it's just that most of the top 5 haven't even appeared in the story yet.
What people often misunderstand about this episode - for reasons that are unclear to me, honestly, because it seemed fairly obvious when I watched it myself the first time - is that this isn't a "love confession" scene. Or rather, that the "confession" part of that concept accounts for _maybe_ 0.5% of Rem's reasoning for telling Subaru she loves him, and giving him the list of reasons why.
The point here isn't that Rem is attempting to get him to reciprocate (never mind that confessing to someone, regardless of how nicely it's done, should ever entitle anyone to a reciprocation), the point is that she sees he's in a terrible mental place and spouting a whole lot of self-loathing, and so she uses her own feelings of love for him to counter-balance that loathing.
Said feelings are genuine, but they're used here as an assurance, by Rem and for Subaru, that he can be loved, rather than as a mere declaration of love towards him. It's evident by paying even a little bit of attention to the scene and seeing that this is a back-and-forth, and that she's not really "confessing" at all, rather just responding to his claims that he's empty and ugly inside, by describing to him why she disagrees. The ultimate aim, of course, being to get him back on his feet, and not taking him out on a date or something.
In other words, she's not trying to get him to see she, specifically, loves him. She's trying to get him to see _he is and can be loved,_ through her own feelings. Important distinction. If anything, it feels more like a therapy scene than a love confession scene.
You don't just give up your love just because another one confessed, Rem is the best girl, facts, but Subaru is loyal... he get the worse, give up, and Rem bring he back to the light, but didn't reset what he thinks about Emilia. She was there since the beginning, they both protect each other and all what he's doing is because of her. And of course, he likes Rem but damn I will not feel confortable with someone that killed me and tortured me, even if had their motives.

The entire plot was Subaru trying to take Emilia away from danger, she didn't had a situation were she has to sacrifice herself to protect him because he don't tell what's happening and already try to do something beforehand. But even then, she tries to confort him, help when he need, try to keep him away from danger, she has the same protective will as Subaru, she has the same problems like ignoring about themselves to protect others, she brought someone she never met before in her house, help to recover, and even when he breaks her feelings she still cares about his health.
Subaru has many motives to love Emilia, so of course he didn't choose Rem.

Lol, I get your frustration but I think Rem knew Subaru loved Emilia going into this but still chose to tell him these things. She knew she would get rejected, which makes it more heartbreaking and selfless that she still chose to confess to Subaru. She didn’t say it to receive any reciprocation, Subaru hated himself so deeply. The only way she knew how to help him was to SHOW HIM he is loved. She never planned to confess to him, it just happen to happen.
Subaru has loved Emilia for about a month now, they survived a lot of shit together and she was there for him when no one else was when he first appeared in that world. It would actually be more shitty if he just immediately gave up on her just because Rem confessed to him.

Subaru expected things from Emilia just because he loved her and wants to do things for her, Rem showed Subaru that love should be truly selfless. Thats why I think the rejection here is important for his character. Rem crying into his chest shows how human she is, she knew it would hurt. And Subaru probably doesn’t feel good rejecting her but him not being honest here would be more insulting to Rems character after she poured her heart out. It seems cruel but I think it was Subaru giving back the honesty she gave

If I had to think of a reason why Subaru likes Emilia so much outside of simply falling for her, it would probably be because she's one of the very few people he's close with that haven't tried to kill him.

Something to note now since it never really gets addressed in the anime save for one very short second before a certain reveal, but Subaru isn't rejecting Rem here. He is just reaffirming that he loves Emilia and wants to support her, which if you think about it would be crappy of him if he didn't say that at that point.
Rem is No.2 to him but by no means any less than Emilia at No.1 is the takeaway.

Also you should consider the fact that Subaru couldn’t have told rem he only loves her because that would be a lie. He still has feelings for her but Emilia came first and it would be a lie and not like himself to forget all of that.
You also need to remember that Rem didn’t exactly want an answer to her confession she wanted to bring Subaru back to normal so him saying “I love Emilia” shows that she succeeded.

In the books, Subaru ends up catching feelings for Rem a little while after this (while still having feelings for Emilia, which makes him feel like a bit of a scumbag) but that didn't end up making it into the anime.

I just think people's issues come from seeing love as a theme which only belongs in romance stories.
Love is a theme in re zero in the sense of why they love each other, and what it leads them to or drives them to do. Subaru loves Emilia because she saved and inspired him from the day he got there, putting on a mask but panicking at losing everything from day one. He's never been truthful about the whole excited to be isekai'd thing, it was an unwanted escape from life when he could have made something of himself in Japan. But Emilia was who he used to make the most out of it and was also someone he was inspired by. Then when she left him he ran away from the issue over and over again before getting to this point where Rem makes him face the real issue.
And the thing is... I hate the romance angle people are viewing it through, because this is Subaru progressing. When he drove Emilia away in the first place, Rem was there as a constant reminder of how to be honest with your feelings. She never said he saved her, or that she owed him, or that he doesn't know how much he helped her, or talk about her past, or that he doesn't understand, or expect him to reciprocate those feelings just because she owes him so much and now he HAS to let her sacrifice herself for him, he HAS to take this all as something she does for him. She doesn't expect him to love her back, and at her best shows how he knew from the very start he should have treated Emilia if he really loved her. And this is where Subaru starts learning from her.
But when Subaru does it people suddenly find it cringe. Subaru saying he wants to help Emilia, that he loves her, and not saying all of his fighting from here on out is for her, is not dumping all of the guilt on Emilia or demanding anything back from her. Rem wouldn't be "an angel" if she didn't force Subaru to correct his previous path and say, now I'm going to stop this from happening because I love Emilia, because I want to help her achieve her goals and be treated better by the world. Rem would be the same as Subaru, expecting something in return for her self sacrifice.
If this story followed in a more acceptable way through the romance focused lenses everyone uses, it wouldn't be narratively strong for it. It would be wish fulfillment, whether that's through Rem taking his hand and running away from her life as well, or Subaru softening his words to confirm the idea that Rem says this as a confession expecting a romantic response. Even if Subaru says "I think you're great but..." that's still a different scene, bscause Rem doesn't need that. Rem sees him as inspiration, that even as the failure she thought of herself as she isn't, that her being a weak oni doesn't matter and that her sister doesn't want any of the sacrifices she's putting at her feet because she accepted losing her horn long before Rem did.

The director distorted her entire character to give unnecessary screen time, those who only watch the anime think that Rem is a perfect little girl who did everything for Subaru, when in fact she already faked her own death to make him desperate and declare himself romantically for her, she tried to change his mind so he could convince Emilia to leave Rem to be his second wife, she has serious suicidal tendencies and an inferiority complex (in addition to the ridiculous emotional dependence she has on the Subaru), that being said, Satella is the best girl.

I wrote a long comment but it led to this quick summary of why this scene shouldn't be touched because of the romance putting people off.
Re zero is exploring love between them as an extension of self love. What Rem needs from Subaru in exchange for loving him is him being the best version he can be. And loving himself. Because she fell in love with him for things which she couldn't accept in herself. That means the whole trying too hard at something when everyone says you're too weak. I don't see how this scene could go differently and be as good tbh. None of them should be pairing up, because then it would break down the love between them reflecting self love theme since they still have so many issues of their own. There's a reason romances are often stopped at the very start in re zero and it's because of this.
It's like the opposite of "I can fix him", in fact you WON'T fix each other while being a couple. That's more codependency than love tbh. You can fix each other as friends with a budding romance which may or may not happen in the end instead, which is the re zero way.

I will always say, the execution could've been better with just a few changes to make it better, like say something like "you're perfect, but my feelings, my feelings, my love is for Emilia"
It makes sense, you can't just change whom you love so quickly. We all know even having crush on someone only for them to be in a relationship later or from earlier, but you still cant suddenly change it. Its similar to getting over ex (probably), and would take time, but in this case he's never properly expressed himself tto Emilia. On top he's socially awkward, given start of this anime we know he was a recluse so no friends or social interactions either, hence he's bad at communication & has a protagonist/saviour complex from all the shows he watched.

What I would have liked to see more is the rephrasing of the way the dialogue of subaru was done to rem. Literally just 5 seconds after rem goes "ILY" he says the line thats become meme of "i love Emilia", and it would become a meme because its done without any preparation or even explanation of Subaru's POV before saying so, which is why people & first time reaction vids dont like it.
Like it would've been so much better even if the line that i had written previously was said instead of what he said with something along the lines of "i appreciate you and acknowledge your feelings, thank you for that/them....but..., I love Emilia". I'm not a writer & English is literally my 3rd/4th language, yet i can tell that changing the way its said would've been better. (Bengali, Hindi & marathi being the others. Japanese on its way to be 5th language)
