It makes sense to have He-man and Skeletor readily available but as a child I hated variants. Well, as an adult I do too. I was always so excited to see new characters like Scare Glow, Saurod etc and especially to see main characters that had never had figures like Randor and Sorceress.
Yeah, no one wants to start their collection without the main characters
@@spectorcreative1872 The one exception to that seems to be GI Joe, which somehow managed to stay consistently popular despite most of the major characters eventually not having figures on the pegs.
@@spectorcreative1872 which is why for all of my He-Man collecting lines (Vintage, 2002 and Classics) I start with He-Man/Adam and then other figures. Doesn't matter much if it is a variant. I just want to have the main character.
This explains why my parents couldn't find me a plain old regular he-man figure. I had some of the variants but I wanted the regular one. This explains a lot!
Crazy right! If Mattel back in 86 just pumped out more of the core characters from the cartoon the line might not have ended. Hindsight and all.
@@spectorcreative1872 "hindsight and all " they could have also screwed up in the other direction and over-saturated the Market with 're-releases' of those core characters...
Look at the Origins line currently in stores... It was supposed to 'go live' as a WalMart exclusive back around August? with wave two circa October and #3 in December...
- it was well after Labor Day before any Pegs were filled and when they finally arrived they seemed to be at a Rate of 1 HeMan and 1 Skeletor to Each of the other 4 characters (and the subsequent Waves aren't appearing) leaving those two 'core characters' warming the Pegs with no implied 'support' to indicate the line is still active....
Hopefully the Loss of Exclusivity will expose this as a WalMart Problem and a not a Mattel Problem
So glad the classics line didn’t have action features in general. Scareglow of course works! Cannot picture him without being a glow in the dark figure! Thanks for your efforts on making this line so legendary Scott!
If he wasn't GOTD that would have been bad. But with no additional tooling or mechanism his action feature was easy to keep in tact!
I'm 44 years old and I grew up with motu and besides clawful and spickor and stinkor. Faker , ninjor and specially scarglow are my favorite motu figures. And thank you toy guru for the classic I have every single one' except the spector
And why not Spector?
Nifty video! Thank you!
This is easily one of my top ten favourite characters and figures out of any incarnation of MOTU, and the Classics version is just amazing. Extremely well done to all involved!
I hope they make enough of him in the Origins line so that I can get one. Getting sick of terrible distribution, combined with competing against scalpers and hoarders, in the lines that I enjoy.
Yeah even Scareglow's video has been one of my most popular!
I don't really think it was the lack of the A-Lister on the shelves that ended up killing the line.
By the time 1987 came around, He-Man and She-Ra was no longer in syndication around these parts. All the kids I knew tended to want toys of what was basically on television at the time. Those 30 minute commercials were very effective in getting us to beg for toys back then.
Despite He-Man being off the air, I was still way into He-Man and I was happy to see Randor and Sorceress on the shelves, as well as loving all the cool looking characters like Scare Glow, Mosquitor and the Dinos.
Then again MOTU has stuck with me since the day I was introduced to it and the best part of MOTUC for me has been getting all the new and obscure characters. If MOTUC was still going on, I'd be happy for any new character that has yet to be made into a figure.
I think you may have missed the nuance. While the line was declining with current fans, Mattel couldn't make up the loss with adding new fans because there were no core characters on the shelf.
There wasn't one direct reason, but the lack of main characters on shelf did contribute
I remember having a character as a kid called, I think, Moss Man. It was Beast man flocked in green and smelled like pine trees.
Yup. That was Moss Man. Check out his video on this channel
Scare Glow is a very cool bastard. Very eye-catching. And he is one of the most expensive figures in every edition.
Crazy right? Especially since he was done on the cheap in the vintage line
I love this inside look at the making of the MOTUC line. Unfortunately I was way late to the party and have had to pay aftermarket prices on ebay but I really love this line and some of the history behind it. Please keep the MOTUC videos coming!!!!!!!!!!
Keep watching and sub'ing and I'll keep making em
Always entertaining, always informative. Thanks for another fun MOTUC vid!
Thrilled you enjoy! Tell your friends.
I totally love your content.. And how much you've done for this great toyline... Thank you from a life-long MOTU fan...and avid retro toy collector
You are most welcome and thanks for the kind words! Please do feel free to share these videos online with others, it helps the channel a ton!
Came back to rewatch after MOTU Revelations. Really loved what they did. Still wish I could find some of these figures. I should've been paying more attention a deccade ago.
Well there is always time!
@@spectorcreative1872 Time I have. The problem however is more of a money issue. Convincing the wife that I need He-Man toys at 42 years old is a rough task!
I Loved Scare Glow! I still have the vintage one (driving my vintage Bashosaurus) and I bought several of the Classics. I wrote a short story about Wun-Dar's origin and used Karak Nul, in his "corporeal form", as the main villain. When I was a kid, my brother HATED HIM, because I would say, "He's a ghost," thus, he could be invisible, appear and disappear at will. Indeed, the heroes in my stories were often attacked by a floating scythe and disembodied voice.
Yeah he is an unbelievably popular character.
The personal promo elements of these videos are so well integrated, I didn’t even recognize what you were up to until I was deep into the catalog. Good work!
Well glad to hear! Never want them to be overwhelming.
@@spectorcreative1872 very organic and well considered. It never feels like an awkward transition or forced. In fact, it’s kinda additive.
Scare Glow was one of my final figures in the vintage line, I was overjoyed to get him when he came out for the classics line. I appreciate your hard work on this figure and the line itself. Thank you.
He was sure a favorite to do! Feel free to share this video and others online, it helps the channel a ton!
I love Scareglow! He's probably in my top 5 favorite MOTU figures ever!
THAT comes up a lot.
What's the others in your top five
I'm dreaming of a full line retail release for motu classics still, the movie could be a great starting point. Secondary market pricing has gotten ridiculous
I dream of that too
Same here, except that I want a fresh Classics Scareglow so it can glow like the Origins one.
It's just crazy how strong that figure glows.
As a kid I always pretended Scareglow was Skeletor's dad and he'd make like Skeletor go to his room if yet another one of his plans was defeated by He-Man. Always one of my favorite figures from the line.
That is great! Stories we make up are always the best ones.
I really appreciated what they did with him in Revelations. He fits in the "Hades" role.
Yeah that was crazy!
History repeats itself with the 200X line with too many He-Man & Skeletor variants. And again with Classics with the lack of reissues.
I think it was the reverse. There were too many variants of He-Man and Skeletor; it was hard finding any of the other characters.
The one thing I will give 200x credit for... at least they USED the variants in the show. People always claim that the 80's cartoon was 'just a toy commercial'... but I've always disagreed. If you watched that show and wanted teh toys, you couldn't find them. The ones you DID find didn't look like the cartoon at all. The cartoon came after the toys and did it's own thing... but there were a lot of better 'commercials' out there. GIJoe, Turtles, Transformers... the guest stars were pretty much 'Whatever wave we're selling now.... " He-man never really did that.
200x absolutely DID do that. Ice armor, Samuraii armor, Snake armor, snake varients.... They were spot on showcasing the toys that were on the shelves.... distribution was terrible, but that was absolutely a commercial... and if i was a kid I would have appreciated that. I would have WANTED an Ice Armor or Snake Armor version to match the show I was watching....
Oh boy does it. Learn from history people
@@phantom1592 they did, and they didn't...
I just Binged the first 10? episodes and it was around #8? they showcased what I think was their answer to 'Battle Armor' Skeletor (Red metallic torsos w/ lots of spikes on his shoulders) and in the show TriKlops and Evil Lyn got similar 'upgrades' However I don't recall either minion getting a Toy in this model (while He-Man didn't upgrade in the episode, but got the Torso Variant Toy, with Voice chip IIRC)
- they were also subtle bordering on Subliminal with some of the Vehicles
for my part what turned me off so many of the Variants is that the 'variable' in the He-Man Figures was too often Just Armor or repainted/new plastic weapons
- I get that he's 'invulnerable' but when your Ice-armor He-Man doesn't even get Painted Pants under his Furry shorts... you're not trying
If I had a Time Machine, there’s a hundred collectible things I would do, but the first would be to tell Mattel that people wanted more of the core He-Man figures back on shelves, I feel like that could have saved the line. Also I would have bought every WWF LJN and Hasbro figure and gotten them signed somehow, then went to my life finally and told me to go into something that would lead me on the track of working at Mattel on the MOTU or WWE lines, I’d also probably get every MOTU Classics figure
Hey Scott! Great video! I don't know if you ever heard of an action figure reviewer named Glenn Webb. In his Scareglow video he jokes that the key accessory is really for Evil-lyn's chastity belt.
His version is now my head-canon 🤣.
He was an amazing reviewer and unfortunately passed in 2016. But his memory will live on! I thought maybe you would find this funny so here you go 😃.
I don't even want think about Scareglow and Evil Lynn bumping uglies...
I have a very vivid memory of the figures from this wave being on close out at a Kay-Bee years later. (well into the NA era).
I"m sure they were. MOTU tanked in the last year at retail
Last summer, 2020, I saw on Facebook Marketplace someone selling 3 totes of on-card 200x figures, each (tote) for $30, so I bought all of them without hesitation. I got to talking with the seller and it turns out he bought literally everything from the Classics line and kept them all in the mailers in his garage, taking up space. He was being pressuresd by his wife to sell all of it and he just wanted to make his money back, so he only wanted $30 - $40 each for most of them. He had a local toy collector interested in buying all of it, but I convinced him to sell me about 60 of them, Scareglow being one of them. My daughter has T1 diabetes, so I buy and sell toys (mostly vintage MOTU) to help pay for her insulin and other medical expenses, so I sold everything for a nice profit EXCEPT Scareglow - I'm holding on to that figure as a momento.
Best health to your daughter and thanks for the great story
He just got some love with the new SDCC release. I lucked out and got one!
Nice! I hear it was tricky
ScareGlow and Skeletor are my all time Favorites
Scareglow is crazy popular

Glorious....
The lack of retooling on this wave also meant that it was just completely lost amongst all the knockoffs. I remember the first time I saw Scare Glow out of the package thinking it was just another rip-off.
He did huh?
Why do I have this sudden urge to see a Christmas Carol done with He-Man action figures? Oddly enough I've seen a few in the original wild recently, but the dealers were asking a hefty price for a loose 'bare bones' 1. The other 1 had part the bubble & another accessory & I was tempted to snag it. As always great videos sir!
Scareglow, kind of the MOTU popularity contest.
Awesome videos! Keep them coming! Quick question that popped up on a MOTU FB group. Why does Megator have Scareglow's face on his armor? What is the relation? Thanks!
Keep reading the bios! No just kidding. Their was a backstory about "scareglows" being a race or group of beings. It is hinted at in the Geoff Johns DC comics first issue.
Hi Toy Guru! When you and Mattel did scareglow did you already have plans to make the castle grayskull classics? I always had that doubt because the little castle that comes with the key is very similar to the castle grayskull classics, thank you very much and congratulations for your channel and your excellent work! 😀👍
Not at all. Hoped we would, but at the time of Scareglow the key was just a key without a castle. It worked out in the end though!
@@spectorcreative1872 Oh ok, thank you very much for clarifying that question that I have always had and thank you also for taking your time to answer the questions from the fans, that the channel continues to be very successful and take good care of yourselves! 🙂👍
you should do a bios only on the classics action figures and turn it into a story? I would love that!
Well Mattel would need to ask me to do that
Can’t get enough of these videos. Do you edit them yourself?
Edit, and colorize!
Any chance we'll see a Moss Man video today? I mean, it's 4/20, so he makes the most sense (well, Hordak could also work for today, but that's a little dark for MOTU).
Doing the figures in order of release, not tied to any dates.
That is why Classics will always be the best ever MOTU line regardless of the push Mattel is giving Origins and the future Masterverse, simply bacause Classics had you Scott and then Brian of Super7 after. With the Four Horseman there, Classics simply deliver the best MOTU could be. I hope I get a chance to own Scareglow eventually.👍👍👍👍👍
It still is quite interesting to me how popular this version of Scareglow has been
@@spectorcreative1872 In my opinion, it represent what Classics really is: a modern interpretation of the vintage figure and its cross sell art. It is really spot on, with the GITD feature present and the added accessory gave it an edge to other figures in the line. The only thing that can make it better is that if it had a version using the vintage style cardback like the one used in Super7 Ultimate line.
My vintage Evil-Lyn (both of them) had glow-in-the-dark crystal ball staffs. I don't remember if it was called out on the card or not, but they definitely glowed.
Yea they did but no they were not called out on card! Good memory
@@spectorcreative1872 After posting this I had a did I remember that correctly moment. So I went and got Evil-Lyn out and tested it and the crystal ball staff from 1984-1985 (when my replacement would have been purchased) still glows in the dark. Sadly the Origins Evil-Lyn's crystal ball staff does not...may need to track down a vintage one of Ebay and upgrade.
❤️
you too
Dude I forgot that you were talking about scare glow for a Lil bit back on track!
It’s the only way to be sure
Sounds like they’re doing the same now in origins. They need to re release some of the older waves because a lot of collectors can’t find some of the older waves unless it’s for an arm and a leg. Myself, hoping at least they release another variant of tri klops and trap jaw(200X hopefully).
Need to yes, logistically they can’t due to MOQ issues
@@spectorcreative1872 thanks for the knowledge as always. In your professional opinion, do you think them re releasing wave 3 is a one time thing? Or was there something else in play? Like left over stock or something?
A Scare for the Masters of the Universe (1982-1987) line for Mattel.
Oh puns…
Fun fact. In Roman times.... purple was the color of Emperor. It is one of the reasons that the Senate turned on Caesar, he began wearing purple.
And the only way they could get purple was from a snail! That is why purple was so valuable and is not on any single flag.
@@spectorcreative1872 I learn something new everyday. Thank you.
It's funny now it seems like all you can find is He-Man and skeletor as far as recent releases go.
If anyone is going to peg warm those are the ones that should
Very cool. He's a very striking character. I'm still having trouble finding the Mega Construx version. Some of the figures are hard to find in the UK and Scareglow is one of the rarest and so is silly prices. :(
Their is a new Origins version as well, but I hear it is also hard to find!
@@spectorcreative1872 Oh yeah the Origins figure is out here soon. Looks cool but I don't buy those (yet). I'm tempted by some but I prefer the smaller scale Mega Construx for size and cost reasons. AND I just've seen see a preview pic of the next wave of MC figures and it looks like Scareglow is getting a re-release anyways so yes!!! (Man-E-Faces, Trap Jaw, and and mini-comic decos of Roboto and Tri-Klops make it a great 5 figure wave). :D I'd love to own some of the Classics range as I really like their proportions and details and extra lil features you put in but the costs are far too much for me (was looking at the MotuC-scale Super 7 Snake Mountain but that is £900 and that's NEW and not after-market! :O ) . If I ever win the lottery though I'mma track down as many of them as I can. Anyways I'mma watch some more of these vids of yours. It's interesting seeing the reasons for design choices on these figures even if I may never be able to own the figures myself (just watched the She-Ra one where you explain the 'hole in the head' that people complained about when it was to support a neat feature with the mask/headdress and you're not supposed to display She-Ra without it anyways, cos that's just pretty much Adora in She-Ra's dress. :P )
oh and yeah i was considering the Origins Scareglow in place of the MC one even if I'd had to pretend he was made huge for some reason. But I'm glad I don't have to now and can just buy the MC version re-release. I may stil get Origins version if I do start grabbing a few Origins figures but MC is my focus. :)
I was late to the game in GI joe. So getting Cobra Commander in 1989 was not possible. Until they released their 1991 version which most people hate except me because he was my first Cobra Commander.
I never had a Cobra Commander...
@@spectorcreative1872 If you have a chance and it’s on you list, definitely try and acquire the classified version. It’s fantastic.
What about the Fuerza T toys? How did Mattel allow then to be made? Did Mattel sue them? Always wondered. They are obviously the same mold.
Great suggestion! I will try to get to this in time, but for now I'm trying to avoid discussing any issues where Mattel was involved in legal cases. Not my place to discuss! But love the idea!
I'm really glad Mattel's doing He-Man and Skeletor as evergreen figures, as this will hopefully prevent MOTUO from sinking as a retail line. Although, I have my doubts about it succeeding (specifically because of how iconic the Filmation interpretation is, as well as there not really being any mainstream barbarian fantasy properties rn).
Cinnamon Bun I wonder how bad distribution will be despite a mass retail. Already hard enough dealing with scalpers and hoarders
@@ryverchoy1370 Yeah, I share your concerns. I really only want one MOTU Origins figure -- but it's Scare Glow, and I worry that the scalpers, hoarders, and Scare Glow cultists out there will snap them all up and leave none for the people who just want one. Plus, brick-and-mortar distribution has gotten appallingly bad over the last year, especially in my neck of the woods, even before the pandemic hit. Stores near me wouldn't get whole waves of figures from multiple lines and several different companies.
And I hope kids get into the new line so it will keep going
On the classic card.. why was Zodak referred to as Evil Cosmic Enforcer ?
Because originally all the characters with the Reptile feet were evil and they wanted an even number of good and bad guys.
I never got the classics version. I wish I had. I was too busy trying to save JLU.
Hey, JLU was worth it. Another great line.
Oh well, when Scare-Glow shows up at your door, who you gonna call?
Clearly the mailman
At 9:47, bottom of the screen - who is the guy with the light green swords?
Max Steel. See here: czcams.com/video/w16aBisbL60/video.html

Nice! And great to hear kids enjoying motu
@@spectorcreative1872 we watch the original series constantly.
In the good old times (80's and 90s), children used to be concerned about toys and adults used to be concerned about other things, like gadgets for example. Now things are twisted...

Now that is a whole video into itself. Essentially for the first time we have a generation raised without a full time parent at home (either one) and this lead to things like participation trophies and dopamine inducing social media addictions

On the topic of glow in the dark, why did mattel never promote evil lyn's scepter as glow in the dark? Never knew it did until years later.
Honestly, I think this was a miss
I wonder how many people even know that it does? Or knew when they were a kid?
I'm glad there was a misunderstanding or we might not have got scareglow.
Ha!
🤔 i saw the scareglow Origins figure. May be he was an old Demo man General during the Cave-Ar era and end up as a guardian of darkness the shadow of skeletor waiting for demo man to be free so that the demons like him and Ninjor can conquer Eternia
Head head cannon is just as valid!
@@spectorcreative1872 the ideas where already there, we have the pieces and the characters XD even if the Cave-ar idea is never used i realy love Scareglow and Ninjor as old pals of Demo man.
And that Scareglow realy hates skeletor (i think it was on one of the 2003 comics) becuase Keldor is the dominant personality. (My brother love ninjor he is TMNT guy but lost his figures, and now he wants a ninjor figure)

Would love to see a line pointed more toward the mini comic style and not the cartoon. :(
I think that is what Origins is supposed to be right?
@@spectorcreative1872 Not exactly... They are 'upgrades' to the original figs with more articulation without the cartoon look, which I for one, welcome. All I need to do is blast that damn mustache off of Man-at-Arms when I get him. :)
What I'd like to see is a line tooled after the first six mini comics and the character images on the cardbacks... it's just a lot more Frezetta looking.
@@zufalllx Well, you're in "luck," because Power-Con has that $200 "Lords of Power" 5-pack that is DEFINITELY in the early mini-comics style.
yeah, I will say that as a kid (and even as an adult) I have always hated Variants for pretty much that reason. I started with classic He-man... but when he broke, I ended up with Battle Armor and then Thunder punch... but to me they were fakes. they weren't the REAL he-man. I still have zero interest in underwater scuba ice Batman... I just want BATMAN... It always annoyed me that Battle Armor (awesome feature, but still not the 'real' He-man) or Thunder punch were never really in the cartoon or mini comics.
I know there was talk that they DID release the 'original's throughout the years... but I started right at the beginning with He-man and Man-at-arms... and by the next christmas had all the 8 back and most of the 12.... but NEVER EVER saw ANY of them in the stores again. I lost Man-at-arms and Beast Man fairly early on... but never even had an opportunity to replace them. I think He-man showed up once in a Battle Cat/He-man combo that I snatched up... but carded?? Nope. I can totally feel for those kids that missed out on the classics and always felt behind.
I always wondered why they didn't make a NEW Man-at-arms with a mustache after the show became big... after the show, I never saw him again in the aisles. You would think the main EVERY EPISODE type characters would be a bit more evergreen...
I started collecting mid-1983 when I got Man-E-Weapons for my birthday, but I was fortunate to get caught up with the collection before the Battle Armour variants came out. I still saw a few "The Original" He-Man and Skeletor figures after that, but not for long. Personally, I didn't mind the variants at the time; I had fun with them.
Things definitely started to get out of hand in the 1990s, though, with what I call "Kenner Batman Syndrome": a bazillion Neon SCUBA Grappling Hook Laser Batman (with Dino-Buddy!) figures warming the pegs, while the single villain packed one-per-case has already been nabbed by a scalper and marked up to $75.
Ah the facial hair debate. I see the new Origins figure has it.
now with origins we have nothing.
At least we have articulation
