  • Luigi's Mansion is an absolute classic.
    Was Luigi's Mansion THAT good?
Luigi’s Mansion is a built to be re-playable, creepy, pseudo-survival horror game, fun, classic Nintendo title, Luigi’s first real solo game, no checkpoints, manual saving only, stole the Ghostbuster vacuum idea, unique, arcade resident evil for kids, intuitive, fantastic soundtrack, almost every room is a new unique enemy with it’s own puzzle to solve, regular enemies look cute and cuddly, surprisingly deep combat, hearing what Luigi has to say about things is weirdly engrossing, hearing Luigi constantly humming or whistling the games beautiful theme song in your ears depending on if he’s scared or confident is weirdly soothing, ghost-tracking and hunting and honestly so much more. Luigi’s Mansion takes all of these little things and brings them together to create what I believe to be an excellent, unique title and experience that every gamer should take the time to try.

I remember when I picked this up at GameStop as kid, the worker told me “don’t get scared” and boy was I scared from multiple moments when I played this game. I wish I got that same feeling with the other Luigi’s Mansion games but the first one really is the darkest one. The scary elements make Luigi’s Mansion 1 my favorite in the trilogy.

Agreed. I don't 100% know what it is but the first one manages to handle horror the best. Second is Luigi's Mansion 3, and third being Dark Moon in terms of horror/creepiness. Maybe it has to do with the sound design and darkness?

It'll never happen, but I'd love to see a genuinely scary Luigi's Mansion game.
Fighting enemies that would look right out of actual horror games, but still with the same silly gameplay as the other entries xD

I love this game, I grew up playing the og on my Gamecube. The version I played was the PAL version and I love what they did there with the Hidden Mansion.
The Hidden Mansion is darker, it's mirrored and they changed Boolossus boss fight in that version. In the PAL version instead of fighting him normally, Luigi takes of his poltergust and decides to ride it. I guess this is where Nintendo got the inspiration for that poltergust car in one of the later Mario Kart games.

If you can play it on anything that isn't an actual 3DS, the remake is pretty cool too. It expands upon the ranking system by adding platinum frames to the bosses (though you must refight them in Egadd's gallery to get them), achievements, multiplayer (again if you can play it on anything besides a 3DS) and S rank for the money ranking. It also kept most of the differences from the Hidden Mansion PAL version, so it's an overall great package for fans of the original. If you prefer the sequels' way of using the flashlight, it even includes an option for it too! Biggest issue is playing it on a 3DS. The controls suffer hard regardless of if you're using a regular 3DS or a new 3DS.
The original Luigi's Mansion is such a great game. I was bummed out when I learned ages ago that the reason there wasn't a sequel for 12 years was because it was apparently poorly received, but the notion eventually changed and we got 2 and 3. While those games are great in their own right, I do believe the original has a better atmosphere, charm, bosses and art direction, as it was like you said very heavily inspired by Resident Evil and aimed to be a kid-friendly horror game. Hopefulyl one day we can get another game like the first Luigi's Mansion, though I doubt it at this point.

  • @artey6671

Sorry for double comment but your mentioning puzzles in modern gaming is why I like RE8, the puzzles aren’t explained and only in one of five major locations are the puzzles so annoying I used a guide, so that’s a pretty good balance if you ask me and it’s really nice to see, heck sometimes the other places still stump me for a bit because it’s intuitive only to the point of being relatively in the window of what a sane person playing the game for the first time could find, and the difficulty comes from you becoming a cartographer and learning the map, and using resources efficiently

As good as the LM 2 & 3 are I always return to and replay the 1st one. The atmosphere, the weird Hybrid of cartoon and realism in the graphics, Catching ghosts, and the amount of things to look at and interact with. While short that length also makes it easier for me to sit back down and replay and try for a better rank, getting gold portraits and attempting to get A rank. Now don't get me wrong LM 2 & 3 are awesome but they don't feel as replay friendly as the 1st one to me. doesn't help that It feels like some collectables in 2 & 3 are added as after thoughts and don't fully incentivise collecting things quite like the 1st one did. My take after watching all of 3 min. now back to watching the video!
EDIT: Small protip for catching ghosts: When catching ghosts you gotta YANK not just hold the opposite direction. Yanking (flicking the control stick) in the opposite direction not only catches ghosts faster but it helps keep your grip on them. Mastering this can help get the highest portrait rank and maximize pearls earned from portrait ghosts.

@@OrignalNameHere AW yea! The 3DS Versions is pretty good! You are def gonna want to master the yank for the newly added S Rank and Platinum portraits! But for the 3DS the Yank is gonna handle a bit differently, for both your hand and the Circle pad's sake instead of Yank you should wiggle it. It does the same effect but is better overall for the 3DS. Pull the opposite direction like normal but wiggle luigi left and right.

But at the same time, I'm getting really tired of opinions that had become consensus by 2007 being re-framed as some niche and brave take. The original Luigi's Mansion has been in nearly every GameCube Top Ten Titles list ever. It feels similar to seeing a thumbnail that proclaims "Hey Guys, Metroid Prime was actually a pretty good game."
