      It’s not scary. But it’s creepy. There are so many details that add up to it being one of the most genuinely unsettling games available to play.
      Jump scares, gore and demented stories are cheap. But atmosphere is what puts you in the moment.
      I don’t believe there’s another game that has used atmosphere as expertly as Luigi’s Mansion through design.

      It seems a lot of games were compiled at weird hours, not too surprising though. Crunch (unrealistically short development times) has been a major issue in the industry for years. Also, most creatives seem to have weird sleep schedules as well, working when inspiration strikes regardless of hour.

    This game had an impact on me like no other game I’ve ever played. I’m 24 years old and I remember playing this for the first time on GameCube. Every year, around fall time, I always re play the game. I’ve been doing it for years! I can’t say the same for any other game. What I can tell you about this game is I always felt like I wanted more… from the hidden rooms to the teleportation mirrors… I just remember discovering all these cool things and always wanted more surprises. The biggest thing was, I always wished there was another floor to the mansion or a way to walk around outside or to visit E Gadd at his lab. I wish there were more secrets in the mansion to uncover and every time I play this game I always try to find some new secret door or something even though I know it’s not gonna be there. If they ever re-make this game I’d love for them to add more of those elements. I played LM2 & 3 and it’s just not the same as those dark creepy halls.

    • @pphead9960
      @pphead9960 Před 2 lety +14

      I never realized it but you just described what's been bugging me. LM2 and 3 were fine but nothing came close to the charm of the original. Whether it was the dank dark hallways or the ghost designs or maybe just nostalgia I always wanted more to do in it. It was perfectly creepy without scaring me. The sequels just seem too cartoony to be creepy.

    • @CodyBPyrotechnics
      @CodyBPyrotechnics Před 2 lety +13

      @@pphead9960 agreed. I think the biggest issue is the lighting differences between the games. In LM3, the tone of the game is too bright and “happy”. I felt SAFE playing LM3 no matter where I was in the hotel. In the original Luigi’s mansion, there was lightning sounds, dark hallways, and even that part where the mansion loses power and the game forces you to go to the basement and turn it back on. I know this sounds crazy but that was TERRIFYING when I was a kid, but in a GOOD way. The game had a way of scaring me but also getting me hooked on it.

Of course, as I grew older, I forgot about it, but whenever I saw that Luigi image it caused a fight or flight instinct in me. But after seeing this video, I was able to realize “hey, it’s not so bad, and is actually some cool history.” Idk if it’s because of your voice/editing, debunking the rumor, or just explaining what it really was that made me not afraid anymore, but thank you. Okay, so I don't know if anyone will read this or even care, but I found an old ign article dating back to October 13, 2000, and it talks about Luigi's Mansion. It says that the number of players is...2. This could be at a point where the 2-player mode was being worked on, so that's what ign thought was going to be in the final game. Then again, ign did have a habit of getting literally everything else they predicted in the article completely wrong, saying stuff like, and I quote, "Nintendo insists that the game is merely a technical demo. IGNcube thinks there's a lot more to the story, though. Our general theory is that Luigi's Mansion is not just a demo or even its own game, but rather what we saw was part of the new Mario title." This, of course, was entirely untrue. Luigi's Mansion actually DID turn out to be it's own game, what a surprise!
    But, here's where things get interesting. The article goes on to mention stuff about the canceled Super Mario 64: Part II, where they say this, "The rumor about this game was that it featured a gigantic world map, perhaps similar to Super Mario Land and Super Mario Bros. 3. It was even said that Nintendo was exploring the possibility of having more than just two playable characters." This sounds oddly familiar, doesn't it? Almost like a very basic description of Super Mario 3D World! Does this mean that plans for 3D World can be traced back to the late 90's, or was ign just making stuff up? Who knows? I just thought it was kind of cool.
    Edit: Sorry about that, guys! I thought I had the link to the article in here, but I guess I forgot to put it in! I happened to notice that after looking through my old comments, and I tried to leave a reply with the link, but I think it might have gotten deleted. I have seen a lot of videos on the development of Luigi's Mansion, and I have done plenty of research on the topic, as the game is one of my favorites of all time. This video is *easily* the most well-researched, complete, and best video on Luigi's Mansion's development that I have ever seen, and I cannot thank you enough for putting in the care that this game so rightfully deserves.

    32:30 I think the reason luigi starts shivering is you were originally supposed to be placed outside the house, near his labatory entrance once climbing the ladder than you could walk all the way to the house. And from the house to the labatory, it would make sense since every other door in the game is openable, and they put a ladder. Luigi would be shivering once he was outside, so maybe that part of the code got left.

    I think 37:30 is supposed to be the early Pipe Room and not the Breaker Room. The wheel that Luigi's turns to stop the waterfall is still in the same spot. They just didn't implement the "poison water" in this room yet for him to freeze. Hence why there's no door on the left wall.

    • @cowboyluigi5275
      @cowboyluigi5275 Před 2 měsíci +1

      Yeah when he said it was “incredibly similar” I couldn’t spot a single thing the rooms had in common, apart from the wall texture. I just double-checked the pipe room for myself and it’s most definitely what was in that preview.

    I can't believe you got me so invested in an hour long video about a game that no one seems to know about! Seriously, great job, your style of speaking feels very natural and conversational.
    Luigi's Mansion 3 is the one I have the most attachment to, but I have massive respect for the original. Considering the trend-chasing by many AAA developers, I love that Nintendo puts so much love and effort into something as wonderfully weird as horror for kids and vacuum-based gameplay.

    The Gamecube was criminally underrated because of the Playstation 2. The PS2 essentially had bastardised DVD player support and that was what was being touted, since the Cube was a much technically advanced console than its rival.
    Multimedia entertainment was what Sega marketed for years to try and edge ahead of Nintendo, but it was Sony that got away with it.
    Nintendo's hard-ass approach to license distribution control really came back to haunt them when many Devs jumped ship. :(

    58:10 This one scared the absolute fucking rotting living bullshit out of me the first time I heard it. Hearing it now brings tears to my eyes from fear. However, that was years ago. The source of that sound has been found, and...
    Its actually used in game. Where the fuck could this have possibly have been used??? Guess what:
    Its an instrument. Not an actual instrument, but rather, used as an instrument in one of the game's music tracks. Where? The creepiest one of them all, Boolossus' fight.
    Try to listen for it in the part where the music quiets down for a moment, it actually sounds like wind in the background. It also is present in the intro and when Boolossus splits into multiple boos.

    On the small changes on the story:
    I remember watching an interview with, of all things, a guy who was one of the original developers of World of Warcraft, and probably one of the best things he said there was simply "the lore is the first thing to change."
    So, things like "but mansion was supposed to be an illusion" makes way more sense when you realize that story is by far the easiest thing to change out of anything in making a game.

    Anyone ever realize in the beta the rectangular box around the time that flashes around and around is actually a ghost sensor that tells you which direction the ghost is in by flashing in the direction the ghost is in? Look in the bone yard scene and the study scene in the e3 trailer. Or basically any scene where Luigi is fighting ghost in the beta. I never noticed that.

    Fun fact: there actually is a functional official local multiplayer mode in Luigi's mansion, but it's on the 3ds remake. In the beginning of the game, "future E.Gadd" calls from a monitor in "present E.gadd"'s lab. Behind "future e.gadd" you can see the lab from Luigi's mansion dark moon/ luigi's mansion two with the green screens and the screen with the dark moon and everything, which I though was really cool. He tells you that he needs to test his new invention: Gooigi, which is the second player. Present e.gadd says that he didn't expect that, and then proudly says that he never dissapoints.
    The weird thing is gooigi only appears in luigi's mansion 3, so this suggests that gooigi actually already existed in luigi's mansion 2's timeline, it's just that e.gadd doesn't show it to you in luigi's mansion 2, only in the third game.
    (that was kinda hard to explain, I hope it was clear :D)
