After many decades in the Mushroom Kingdom, you finally breathe your last. You feel your grasp on life easing. Your vision becomes blurrier and darker, and the sounds become distant. It's like falling asleep, but slower, and you're conscious through all of it. You become still, but don't feel breathless. And then, the light at the end of the tunnel finally embraces you. You realize there's an afterlife, and is about to start pondering about religion, when it all comes back and you suddenly land on your feet, 67 years younger - just like the day you were just brought here. At the corner of your vision, you see a number decreasing. You've just lost a life.

10:20, I wouldn't say that the castle resets. If you do enough things in stages you can permanently change the castle's form. For example: groundpounding the pillars in the basement, unlocking the hidden stage for the wingcap or opening the doors to the different levels. I'd say that making a bed is the same as any of these tasks.

A fact being in another game doesn't discount the fact itself because it's still the same enemy/species. Meanwhile, the point you brought up is entirely invalid because news flash, a random inconvenient fact is NOT in fact the same as changes in geography and worldbuilding. That's like saying "Mario doesn't like pasta" and then citing Delfino Isle, or saying that Goombas taste like Chestnuts and then citing snes circuit from mk8d as an example.

    • @panathentic
      @panathentic Před měsícem +32

@@takanamoon9907Okay, I see your point, so lat me phrase it differently. If the video were about surviving in the Mario UNIVERSE, you'd be absolutely right. In the Mario universe, he could wander into Mario Galaxy's Toad town outside the castle, or venture into NSMB DS to grab easy food via mushrooms. But if we limit it to ONLY SM64, on the Nintendo 64, there's no reason to think we can just eat a goomba without looking at external sources, being other games. Goomba's don't have real world counterparts as close as koopa troopers do. In the other games, they might be edible, but in this one specifically it's unclear, and there's no context clues to make you think that would be viable. If we start including the logic from other games, we can't pick and choose parts of the universe we want like being able to eat goombas, but then leave out other parts like Toad Town. We're either looking at the mario universe as a whole, or SM64 as it's own independent game, in which Goombas are never said to be edible.

@@panathentic .....what? why are we suddenly including super mario galaxy or new super mario brothers in this???? When did I ever say we should include that stuff, because that's a literal strawman argument you're making right now.
Your argument, I think, comes down to "we can't include lore from other games because if we include one thing, we need to include everything" which makes absolutely zero sense because you're saying one throwaway line in a similar game that's inconsequential at the end of a the day, is comparable to an entire functional, living city in a completely different game with different rulesets, worldbuilding, and character philosophy.
That's like saying "oh mario can't eat bananas in super Mario sunshine" and then citing the super mario brothers super show as an example. Both examples have completely different philosophies. SM64 and DS have similar design and world philosophies. Both operate under the same logic and both don't contradict the other. Meanwhile, something like Super Mario Galaxy obviously contradicts SM64, therefore we shouldn't even be talking about that. No, a triangle isn't as smooth as a circle so why are we talking about pyramids in a discussion about cars?
This isn't about allowing rules from every different Mario game. This isn't about strawmanning and picking and choosing what lore is here. This about having some fun and going with a fact in a game that means nothing in the grand scheme because news flash, goombas explode when near fire in both games.
I'm ending my side of the discussion here because if you can't understand something as simple as that, then I have no reason to keep explaining it.

One problem: You can't actually access later stages without getting stars. It would have been nice if this video assessed the accessibility of the stages you'd need to survive. To reach "Cool Cool Mountain" or "Jolly Roger Bay" for example you need to first earn 3 stars. You won't survive the Thwomp Fortress, so you'll have to get them all in the first stage and/or the castle.
In the castle there are 15 secret stars, but most are too dangerous to even try for. You could collect 8 coins in a special swimming course, but you'd probably drown trying. You could try getting 8 coins in the flying course, but you'd risk falling to your death. You could safely catch the rabit in the basement, but you'd need 20 stars and then 50 stars to get the two stars from it so that's not happening.
This means that your only real option is to get 3 stars in the first stage. Can you though? Racing the turtle up the mountain might be viable, but it would still be a very dangerous race given how fast it moves. Looking at it's size and you'll see that it runs way faster than most humans can move so your only chance here is to cheat. Since your plan is to try and eat it anyway then you can assume it might have a star on it's person so I'd say that one is doable. OK, what else? Well, I don't think I'd be physically capable of picking up King Bob-Omb. It must be a good 20 feet tall and wide and he's clearly made of metal. You can't throw him 3 times if you can't even pick him up. Although, since this is an Isekai story, you can assume to not be bound by game rules. If you can sneak up on him and get a fire to his crown you can light his fuse and wait for him to blow so that's star 2. OK, so far so good. What else?
Uh oh... To get the third or fourth star you'll have to get into a giant canon and launch yourself onto the floating island. That's not likely to happen. Assuming you only have one real life you can't risk being shot off a cliff like that. Also, one of the red coins for the fourth star would require betting behind chain chomp and that would terrify me more. The only other star that seems possible is the star you get from collecting 100 coins, but that's not going to happen regardless of how it works since this particular stage only has 95 coins. Maybe if you can physically pick up coins and put them in a backpack it would work, but it might not be possible given the next problem.
In Mario 64 you can only leave a stage by collecting a star or opening a menu, but if we assume that there is no menu then you will be stuck in the stage until you get the star. Thankfully you can pick up the shadow of stars you already have, but that still means that you have to plan to get a star every time you enter a painted world if you want to return to the castle.
So getting your third star will require having a bag capable of holding 100 coins that you can carry with you while repetedly getting the same star over and over again. Only then can you finally move onto another painted world. Well, I guess the alternative is to try fighting the boos, but I'm assuming you don't want to join them forever.
It's very unlikely that you'd get to many of the other stages, but you will be able to get a few more at least. Once you get your third star you could go to Cool, Cool Mountain and get a star for carrying the baby penguin. That should be easy enough especially given the teleport shortcuts. Then again, if you slip on the ice you fall to your death so you'd want to build ice shoes or something. Racing the penguin here would be a fatal mistake, but getting your 5th star would be possible because the red coins here are accessible. Getting a star for completing the snowman is technically possible, but likewise very dangerous since you have to slide down the mountain in a very specific way without sliding off the cliff. And I am assuming that you won't want to launch yourself from a canon so that leaves you with just 5 stars total.
In Jolly Roger Bay you won't have many options without the ability to swim deep underwater while holding your breath for a prolonged duration. It's also extremely dangerous with mat eating clams and giant eels. There's a star accessible from canon, but you won't survive being shot at the wall like that so not a real option. That means you still only have 5 stars. Unfortunately that's not going to be enough to access any other stages aside from the Thromp Fortress, but I don't see any reasonable options for getting any stars from there.
Another thought it that I would expect that, as an Isekai, the world won't be all pixelated so there's that at least.
In any case, given the inability to reach every stage given how the doors to them are magically restricted would that change any of your ratings? Oh, and it should go without saying that since you need 31 stars to access the second floor you probably won't be able to grab a bedroom for yourself in the castle.

Well I would say not really. If you view the exit leading to the water fall you can see the water from behind and it's clearing coming in from above the exit. Thus this exist is not the source. So it's a cave behind the water fall. I'd chalk up the animation of Mario originating from the top of the water fall just an inconstancy with the game design or graphics limitations of the time.
Though I'd chalk that up to just level design inconsistency. The castle is much larger on the inside then what's apparent on the outside. So it's likely the waterfall is not originating from that secret cave in hazy maze cave. It's just a hidden cave behind the waterfall.

About the castle resetting, would it ? When you drain the water, it stays drained for the entire game, it doesn't reset. So the rest probably wouldn't reset either.
Also if you think about it, Mario is also in this world, right ? When you arrive, Mario might have already defeated Bowser, you could even befriend him which would be awesome.
Peach is a kind person, surely she would let you live in the castle, she wouldn't let you outside on your own with nowhere to go. She could give you a room, install beds and stuff...
Also at the end of the game, she speaks of baking a cake, meaning that she has ingredients, so there is a way for her to get ingredients and cook things. We don't see it, but they have a sustainable source of ingredients.
Life in Peach's castle would be pretty chill. And if you want to do things by yourself a bit, maybe Mario could train you. Maybe you could team up with him next time Bowser attacks.
And even if they don't appear in the game, all the other people in the Mushroom Kingdom exist, like Luigi and you could meet him. Of course that depends if being in this world means only what's shown in the game exists (so no Luigi), or if the things and people that we know exist are present even if the game doesn't show them.

  • @geekforeverpixelgamingsurl5007

Interesting concept. I like it. One thing I’d add in the food department: What about goombas? For all we know, their flesh could be a mix between meat and mushroom so it could be very sustainable. Let’s just hope they aren’t poisonous. Also, I feel them and the loop as are bigger than some might realize, but it’s hard to tell. Oh and also also… I already have a hard time imagining myself killing an animal like a cow or a rabbit but koopas and goombas feel closer to humans than they do animals, especially if we count their more modern iterations. We probably wouldn’t here but still. And think of Koopa the quick, he talks and races you.
And as for sociability, might be interesting to try and socialize with the characters in the other worlds, like the pink Bob-ombs or the penguins.
But yeah, I hope to see more of these. It’s interesting.

Good concept, keep it up. You should do Paper Mario next. Got three suggestions though regarding specifically this video. Maybe venture into what-ifs like if the main hub world doesn't reset can come to mind if wanting to stretch video time.
The first is : Don't forget to mention how hard it would be to GET said food or item in these video game worlds. For example : like the giant fish here in Super Mario 64. You can't access that fish without getting the key to go there, and that entails fighting bowser OR pick locking the door ( it has a giant key insert so maybe not too difficult honestly). You not only then have to spear-hunt the fish but you have to *get out* of the painting world which means surviving whatever rigors and obstacles to reach any star ( new or blue) to get out of the painting with whatever you have. The exception is if you are granted the same magical ability as mario of leaving whenever you want ( via pause and leave course option).
The Second thing is : a resetting world would be a perfect sustainability score, not a negative. Yes any stuff you don't carry on you is vanished when painting-hop.... but that also equally means so do all the resources. It's ground-hog daying but that means every resource is always there when you need it and wont dry up. You never run out of water, or fish.
Third : For vegetation... yeah that's tricky. Piranha plants? Check if goomba flesh closer to meat or mushroom?..... what about the toads? Gotta do what you can for survival lol those enemies that you can jump on and spin around is vaguely turnip-like.... maybe they are? Maybe go over the various possible nutritional value of some enemies. There's bugs that are big enough for cooking and surely those are packed with vitals.
OH don't forget : would one be able to access the ending, and how much would change? You'd have potentially wildly different results living in said game world. Especially now companionship with a more-human like princess peach in SM64 ending by rescuing her.

Fresh off of reading Delicious in Dungeon, I'm perfectly ready to evaluate edibility of every enemy in Mario 64. (Going in alphabetical order, by the wiki's category page. This doesn't include neutral or friendly creatures like penguins. Assume anything I skipped I didn't have anything to say beyond "seems inedible".)
    - Bully: I mean, the eyes imply there's some organs in there? That tough carapace will be a huge pain to take apart. Besides, only in LLL, so it's a no go.
    - Bob-omb: not even remotely worth hunting. Butchering one would also be dangerous. Maybe there's something you could scavenge post-detonating but I doubt it. That's assuming they're even organic at all.
    - Bubba: Generally agreed with you: looks like a lot of meat, but a dangerous hunt. Might be worth the risk though.
    - Bookend: The red inside makes me think there might be flesh in there? BBB is definitely somewhat dangerous to reach, you'd have to fight off Boos, but it's not the worst. A solid "maybe".
    - Bomp/Moving Bar: Again, eyes imply organs. You might be able to kill it by stabbing it in the eye? It has severely limited ability to fight back. So much work to get at whatever flesh is in there, though.
    - Bullet Bill: See Bob-Omb.
    - Clam: That big clam would have a nice chunk of meat! Unfortunately they're way too deep underwater to reach.
    - Chuckya: Seems mechanical. Note the ticking sounds and the flat white eyes.
    - Fwoosh: Maybe there's something in there? It's got a face. Likely not much edible even if there is, and not a great hunt.
    - Goomba: Putting aside their much discussed inspirations... They're large and fleshy and soft-bodied. Whether vegetable or animal, that's a very appealing option.
    - Koopa Troopa: That's a turtle alright. Seems meaty. Does have ethical concerns, given Koopa the Quick. Plus you might not to upset him even if you aren't concerned about ethics, he's reasonably friendly (and also right there when you enter BOB).
    - Klepto: There's only one of him (it?), and it'd be hard to take down. You ever hunted a bird? Meat might be tough but yeah, it's a bird.
    - Lakitu: In this scenario, is Lakitu the cameraman following you as he would Mario? Probably do not eat his relatives if so. Otherwise, yeah, this is a Koopa.
    - Mad Piano: Same thoughts as the Bookends, but WAY more dangerous to find out.
    - Manta: Real animal. But it's underwater.
    - Mr. I: It's literally a giant organ! Eye is not the most appetizing organ, but needs must.
    - Mr Blizzard: There might be something organic in there. But probably not.
    - Moneybags: Eh? Another "no proof there's meat, but you could check" type.
    - Unagi / Maw-Ray: don't even try it.
    - Pokey: Yeah, probably. Seems to be a plant. There could be vitamins in there.
    - Piranha Plant: Now this one's interesting. Lots of plant matter here. The bulb and stem probably both have lots of tough tissue for all that moving they do and supporting the weight. Could boil it maybe? Cut it up thin and grill it? Plus there's whatever system makes the fire in there. I'm more interested in the root system, that could be promising.
    - Scuttlebug & Skeeter: Both of these large insects(?) are pretty promising. I'm no expert on preparing or eating insects(?) though.
    - Sushi: That is a shark. I'm not fishing for sharks. You might, though.
    - Spiny: Mostly the same process as hunting a Koopa. But spikier.
    - Spindrift: I suspect the big white ball is supposed to evoke cotton or dandelions, already beyond a point of edibility. Probably all just seeds, and not a nice kind.
    - Thwomp: See Moving Bars.
    - Whomp: Like a Thwomp but it can pursue you.

We've already accepted that fish and koopas are made of flesh instead of pixels and you could talk to toads instead of getting a dialogue box, does the land outside of Bobomb battlefield now consist of forest where new creatures wander in from? do trees now have branches that can burn? I think it's a cool concept to explore, but should be done more by setting a sort of story in there, map out the progression you could make and ask the interesting questions, and perhaps you could beat bowser, if you could gather the troops, maybe you could march into bowser in the sky on yoshis back, with ladders and an army behind you, it's a very interesting and fun concept to explore.

Realistically speaking, you could try to do a lot of things Mario can't do. From making tons of weapons to structures using wood (like the poles in Bob-omb battlefield or the crates you find in some levels) that would technically make it easier to get to the top of the castle, use a weapon to break the stone walls and get to the last floor from outside. There's also ton of enemies and NPCs you didn't cover that could offer more nutrients and vitamins such as MIPs, Fly guys which are technically humanoids, the condor (klepto), the small piranha plants (cuz the big ones are probably too dangerous), the monkey from TTM (again you can make bridges and stuff to cross) and even Lakitu and 1-up mushrooms should be edible. You could also befriend a lot of the NPCs and enemies and make an army to fight Bowser, and speaking of, you should be able to hurt enemies in more ways than Mario. The cannons where made to use weapons, so why not put bob-ombs, goombas or Koopa's shells there and fire them at King Bob-omb? I could try making a hammer to beat Thwomp, and so on. You could probably force your way through doors too, with enough time and effort, so no stars required except for the last floor which has the infinite stairs.
There's also what happens if manage to beat Bowser. Assuming he used the power of the stars to change all the rooms in the castle, lock doors behind star power, put paintings, some which lead to other worlds, some which don't (there were probably some paintings already, but Bowser made more and changed most of them), remove all furniture and home appliances (cuz Peach did say she would make a cake at the end as she was heading inside the castle), etc... So if you manage to beat Bowser and restore the castle to normal you should be able to speak with Peach, who would've surprised of Mario's absence and either help you get out the Mushroom Kingdom or you would start a bland new adventure, this time with Peach's help (and probably Luigi and whoever is willing to help).

This is an interesting idea for a video series! If you end up covering any games with urban areas (like Super Mario Sunshine or Super Mario Odyssey), you could talk about the kind of employment a person could find there, as well as where they would go to buy food, water, and shelter.
Of course, it'd be great to see what other creative ways a person could survive, even if they decided not to live in such urban areas!

This is my jam. I was honestly a bit frustrated that you only made 3 days ago. I want more.
I do have to add that there's technically cake. I agree that we would never get it, but you can't forget to mention the cake at the end! And here some food for thought, or thoughts about food. If you DO get the cake, there's seeds on what I'm assuming is fresh strawberries. You could plant them and grow them at one location.
I think it's really funny to train for years to save the princess just to pick the seeds off her cake and settle down. The real reward was the seeds on some garnish on an otherwise sad reward.
Well, hope you make more soon. I would love to see more cartoon-y worlds like this, you made a good choice. Silent Hill 1, Tomb Raider one and any Kirby games might also be fun. Look forward to it.

Aside from the Tomb Raider survival trilogy, you wouldn't really be focused on survival. Instead you'd mainly focus on either finding a way to just simply leave that location and then make it back to civilization (or leave that area of civilization and find somewhere else to go) or to look for a specific artifact to give to the proper museum later on.
Also, it helps to have some athletic ability.

A lot of the bosses talk to you when you meet them, but they mostly just say something like "I'm gonna smash you real good! Don't hit my weak point!", so even if they weren't a mortal threat they'd still likely be terrible conversation partners.

i find these type of video's interesting because it gives you a whole new perspective on the games world, but i feel like they miss crucial questions like:
    1) how do YOU enter the world and what are the rules? Are you sucked in the TV and is the world is 1:1 with the actual video game? did you enter a portal to a universe (in this case Super Mario) that specifically resembles Super Mario 64 (in this case)? etc..
    2) when you enter the world do you now have the body of the player? do you still have your own body but with the skills/gravity of the player? or are you 1:1 with how you where on earth?
    3) how do you interpret the mechanics? can coins heal you? does the star you collected take you back to the castle or are you magically teleported? are the invisible walls still there or can you also go to implied out of bounds locations? do locations "reset" everytime specifically you leave?
    4) when does the world take place? in the beginning state? at the end? at 100% completion?
it's neat to think about but i think it's more interesting to set rules and assumptions that make the video more understandable

      @PretzelYT  Před měsícem +15

Yeah the comments here have helped me realize I could define the rules a bit better. Though honestly, I don't wanna get TOO bogged down in the details with it. I feel like there's a fine line to ride with this series where you take the world seriously but not TOO seriously.
But yeah, I think with my next video I need to sit down and really think about those things, if only for myself and the sake of internal consistency.

You can live only on meat without vegetables, by eating raw organs like the liver (they contain tons of nutrients). Also, there are vegetables in the game : some flowers are edible, such as dandelion leaves. Some wild plants are also edible, and perhaps found in the grass here and there.
Also the jumping height depends on the gravity, not just on your strenght. Maybe the gravity is lower ?

  • @suicune3776
    @suicune3776 Před měsícem

Love it. Keep doing more, these are amazing :D
Mario falls so much faster than people on Earth, if you wound up in the mushroom kingdom, the gravity would take it's toll on your health. If you survive the drastic gravity and air density change, then there are a couple other factors to consider:
The world progressing unnaturally in response to a new creature (a human) entering the world might also be a big fear. If you ate a Koopa, and Bowser got to keep the Princess long enough to eat her or force marry or something, the mushroom kingdom would be his, and then you would die a horrible death for killing so many Koopas. The racing Koopa and Lakitu aren't too vicious, even towards a fat Italian that's killing their kind. I'm sure at least some of the Koopas would be nice enough to not let you truly starve.
You could possibly join Bowser's side, if the Toads are too dumb to provide you with food or socialize, and Peach isn't around, then maybe Bowser's territory might be more beneficial. There are quite a few enemies alive, meaning there would need to be a decent bit of food to feed them all. If you can get away with this, you might even be able to date or marry a Koopa, then you don't have to feel lonely, either. ;3 It's weird, but nobody in this world will care.
If that's not possible, the Amp(or the Zap, in some games) is emitting electricity at all times. I don't know if they are super calorie-dense or if they are even alive, but even creatures like Electric Eels can't do what that creature does, the amount of calories that thing has to blow at all times would be insane. If an Amp were to suddenly 'disappear' that would open up a lot of food that it eats.
Another way to evade the water issue, is to ask, or watch other creatures drink it. If they don't die, it's safe to drink. Also, you might be able to eat the grass, some grasses can be baked into bread, even. :3
Poor Yoshi is out of the question, but if there is any exploitable 1up glitch, then you could technically keep that number high and thriving, then you could live a very long time, possibly eating your dead corpse from your previous life. :3

I think this is a great idea for a video. I sincerely hope you to take on other very similar projects in the future. A logical next step I believe would be the N64 Zelda games.
A side note. For me personally, this appeals to my younger self playing these games. Having replayed them so many times I would approach them with different mindsets (sometimes a roleplay) in order to make the games "fresh".
For example, in Majoras Mask I'd wear the postman hat and hit up all of the post boxes once a day. Then in the evenings after a long days work I'd enjoy a tall glass of Chateau Romani at the milk bar.
Thank you for this great video. I look forward to what you have for us going forward.
