A ticketable offense in that Coast Guard regulations clearly state that all watercraft 16' or less are required to have 1.37 quarts of beer on board for every 17.2 lbs. of passenger weight. Now get it right or pay the price!

Some perpetual motion enthusiasts would suggest to change the outboard to an electric one and feed it from a generator coupled to the pedals and there you have perpetual motion!!!!!!

A very entertaining experiment. Personally, I would not have conducted such an experiment without a good supply of beer on board, but that's just the engineer in me. That old Johnson performed extremely well considering the shit gas you were feeding that poor thing. The boat itself did really well too, considering the transom/rudder bracket was never designed to handle such a large load of this type! Toward the end as you gained confidence and started to throttle up, I was waiting for that outboard to tear loose and send the whole operation to the bottom! Lots of fun, thanks!

My dad had one of those Johnson outboards, it would always get us out to the middle of the lake but would stall and we always had to row back. Then he got a Firestone which was almost as bad. To make matters worse later on he got a Scott Attwater. Years later someone gave him a Ted Williams the motor ran great, but the gears in the foot part were worn out and he couldn't get parts for it. Oh, I forgot to mention the Viking that he had before the Johnson. That was heavy to lug around but it ran great so I'm not sure why he got rid of it. Probably because Eaton's Canada closed. Finally after he retired he bought himself a Merc. I have a Chrysler outboard which still runs. Hope all those brand names bring back memories for some. If you can name other brands, I'm sure my Dad had one of those too! Lol!

good to see you get it running and moving. My sons and I were at Dodge Park in Omaha, Ne where we watched 3 guys with an old boat that looked like a 57 plymouth, They launched into the Missouri River before starting the motor. Their oars were still in the truck which wouldn't really help as the current of the Missouri is quite strong. We watched them disappear down the middle of the river until we could no longer hear the sound of the starter rope being pulled faster and faster. I always said I would not put a boat on the Missouri. I never heard what happened or how far they got before being rescued.

I like all your videos. But this one caught me off guard. What you did was what I would do but for me it takes a lot of beer first and during the event. I have worked on those old Johnsons and almost all of them that are that old need a new coil because they have cracks that are sometimes hard to see.. I have fixed coils by putting them in the oven at 275 degrees F for 20 minutes with a batch of cookies. When the cookies are done so is the coil. Coat the coil with 5 minute epoxy or something similar to that to keep the moisture out. Aye Aye Captain. Say hello to Gilligan for me. LOL

Boy, I could tell you some stories about boats and motors that don't belong together, like a 12 foot fiberglass boat with a 60 hp long shaft that was too heavy for the boat, We started it, let it get moving before jumping in so it wouldn't sink. Once we got going, if you gave it full throttle too quickly, it wanted to stand on end... oh, did I mention it was hard to steer? Your trip brought back lots of memories. Thanks for sharing...

Wow, this reminds me of when I was about 13, I went with a friend and about two others to do something much more stupid. They had found a wooden flat-bottomed boat that had a sloping front AND back. Actually, the slope was just a 45-degree step and then a vertical section at the top. It was only about the size of a sheet of plywood. We wheelbarrowed a 5-horse motor to the lake where the boat was and we all got in and tore around for a bit. We had the same problem with motor trim. In spite of all the comments here, you can't trim a motor vertical on a transom that's vertical. They just don't adjust that far. We had that boat practically standing on end with the tail end well below the "actual" water's surface, in the hole that starts the wake. And all that with no life jackets, cold springtime water, and me not being able to swim in those days. Dumb kids!
