This motor came out when most men could actually fix things. Not so much anymore. We have come along way in outboards. That was the sounds of my childhood.
That's not the fault of men. It's the issue of increasingly complex machines and capitalist companies who have lobbied for a monopoly on all repairs. They don't come with the necessary information for people to fix them. Then again, mechanics who have experience are a better option for most people, considering the excessive cost of tools and the necessary space.
That was a most laudable example of commitment. And I swear I could see it, during the initial cruise, phasing between dimensions, perhaps the post-war era and the information age. Nice ol' ticker with wiggler cooling. I revived a very old Eska 5HP with the help of an old guy who originally worked at Eska and then bought out a lot of the old parts stock (new carb & reed valve). Had a smashed water pick-up tube just aft the prop; replaced it with a poorly bent copper tube. Worked pretty well on a few years of spring/fall fishing trips, always loud, always a gassy mess, but it did have the advanced luxury of a recoil start. Now just an ornament in the garage. No more iridescent gas trails on semi-pristine waters. Thanks for presenting that intriguing process.
Amazing how the community made it possible to get that old engine back in working order! Some nice people in here, and glad to be a part of it since you had 5k subs
I love the doggie clip too. My profile is a staffordshire bull terrier name of Buster. He's gone now but will never be forgotten. Nicest, kindest most placid dog I ever had. Brought tears to my eyes writing this.
Durrington Dave just saying but if you didnt change your profile picture at all in the past year ive got some bad news Your dog may have been a fish, just saying.
Foghorn Leghorn so true. What was better was when you pulled and it then snorted, pulled the rope out of your hand and you sat there watching it sail away. THEN the fun began!
I haven't seen a motor like that in roughly 30+ years and I am glad that you brought it back to life once more. Good memories of those little boat motors
What a perfect adventure! Nice work! Thanks for the ride around the lake to savor that fine-running old motor. You couldn’t have picked a better boat for the ride. God bless the guy who invented automatic recoil starter ropes and the guy who fixed you up with the water pump impeller. He deserves a mention for his key contribution and might be helpful for others. That was really satisfying and thanks again!
@@gilfredooquendo8731 We had one of those (guessing '70s vintage Johnson), still hidden somewhere in the shed I think. You could motor a long way, but as soon as you thought about turning around and heading back you'd better get rowing. IIRC, more than a decade ago my dad decided to replace the magneto, ordered it on ebay but it never arrived. Decided to buy a modern outboard instead, never had a single issue with it.
3years later an I like watching these outboard videos. i have a garage full of vintage outboards from the late 30s up to the late 80s. Merc and OMC, seeing another made water worthy is always a good watch.
There's is a shop out at Disney springs in Orlando Florida that is a nautical shop and when you go in there they have normally about 3 old restored boat motors for sale they might be a lil older but not much and they are always $1100 -$1300. Each. Another great video thanks for bringing the old back to life. People today don't understand that concept ( broke throw away get a new one) sad Jim Orlando Florida
Gumiho Yeu well yeah thats modern day anything for you. Make it super cheap, and brittle. And then when it DOES break you cant fix it yourself so you just buy a new one. Its like an iphone, never see anyone fixing their own phones with some household tools
Beauty little motor!! I had, in my sordid youth, an ancient 2hp evinrude(?) on an old 18ft pioneer canoe with the ass cut off like yours, we had it up at the boat drags on Lake Cowichan BC during the mid 80's, man that thing was fast, did the 1/4 mile in, like, 78 seconds or so, or one beer, or lunch, but we lost for slowest 'cause we were too late getting there to register, no bother, hey, it wasn't quick, a lot of fun, but frikken so not a speed boat. Nice thing about the old Pioneers is that they had positive flotation due to strips of floaty-foam bolted down the sides, we camped out with six people in the old girl, it leaked but never sunk us, got us around the lake in style for days :) Fond memories mon!
That was really fun. I rememberr going out with my dad in the 9150's with his 2 stroke outboard. I would leave a film of oil on the surface of the lake wherever we went. Eco nuts would freak out today.
As a kid, I remember those little engines from my family going fishing in Homestead Fl, the cheep rental boats has the tiny outboards, like the atlas, the next step up , had Johnsons, Dad would spend a little extra, great video
Rig up a ole electric drill battery pack and convert it into a electric start. Old and New come together. Perfect. So glad to see you saved the old girl. A piece of history preserved.
I've got a wall of small outboards I've collected through the years, when modern engines fail those little engines always start and run faithfully. Great find Mustie!
Holy moly, back in the early 70s I bought a 14 ft. aluminum jon boat with a 3 1/2 hp Elgin outboard motor. This video brings back some very happy memories, thanks for posting this!
To go in reverse you revolve the motor. Turn it to idle and make sure the motor is tight to the transom. If loose the outboard Will rotate off the transom and go into davey jones locker
This video gave me very painful childhood flashback. Growing up in the 1960s my home had a stream in the back that lead to the ocean. My brother had a little 8ʻ pram, and a little 3hp British Seagull outboard motor. I had a 32 to 1 gasoline to oil mix ratio so it smoked quite a bit compared to later 50 to 1 ratio fuel mixes. The painful flashback was the welts left of my body from my brothers efforts to start that motor using the wind on starter cord. I being the youngest always had to sit in the middle thwart within reach of the dreaded start cord. I was so happy the day Dad retired that old Seagull for a new recoil start Johnson outboard. Thanks for the memories... 8-)
Always a smashing video darren :-D Wow! that little outboard has some power, i didnt expect it to work that well :-D. Dam lucky that someone makes the wobbler rubber. Ahh the doggy having fun, mans best frend :-)
Wow, nice to see this motor bright back to life. I had a 18 foo canoe with a 2 hp motor for it. It was a blast with the 2 hp. That will make someone with a collection very happy the marks on the motor a previous own put on the cover is extra cool for me. It shows some one used this it did not just sit.
More worried about the attachment to the thin aluminum than the old plywood. A new transom might be a good project. Maybe one of the viewers has some small pieces of marine plywood lying around.
Loved the boat ride, but seeing Lilly be a Lab was a special treat! Big Lab tail wagging the whole time she was rolling in the grass! Great dogs! Thanks, Mustie!

Mustie1 look at this- pump rotor- 550683 they have them on eBay.

Also there is a forum on there motors there is good information and a pdf for a parts manual.
Mustie1 , we always used a 55 gal drum to test outboards. Just don't put the big boys in and stick em in gear.......ask me how I know.
Surprising how well that little motor pushes the boat. Very efficient.

you need to use red rubber grease. at some point in the past, somebody reassembled it with regular grease, and it made the rubber swell up like that
when I saw the little white caps in the wake I could not help but grin and say she's a runner !! Thank you for rescuing this old engine !
What a little gem! Perfect for a small runabout. I thoroughly enjoyed your tenacity as well as the good will of others to help you restore this one.

Glad you brought this old knuckle buster back to life. These little old motors are hard to beat.
That baby's got raw power I thought she was going to get up on a plane for a minute
Dean Fulford in jr high my dads 1.5hp seaking would plane a small sears game fisher 12ft v hull boat with only me in the boat
Dean Fulford dont make em like they used too lol

Awesome video. I like how you were able to fix it by analyzing how it had to work and narrowing things down.
Isn't it these motors people struggle starting on the way down a river near a water fall? HAHAHAHA!
Or when a giant shark is coming!
That engine will take you as far as you can go downstream, you will fish all day and when is time to come back the piece of shit will not start.
