Oh, the memories! I purchased one of those brand new in the 1980's for my kids to push a 12' aluminium (aluminum) dinghy around on the harbour (harbor) :). They had so much fun - the big thing to remember was to open the air vent on the fuel cap - or you would stop unexpectedly. Starting it was fun - as you pointed out - it is a direct drive so when it started you were underway. The kids soon learnt to push off from the beach, bow first, hop aboard and start her up.
Honda small engine power kills just about everyone else and has been doing it for a long time. I just noticed you're at 274K subs, Mustie! I seem to remember just yesterday you were hanging at 13K or so. I'm so glad to see people are "getting" and enjoying your channel, and I can't think of any other that deserves your phenomenal growth more. Thanks, man!!
Agreed. I just picked up an old 2003 Honda mower that had been sitting for over 3 years and all I had to do was drain the varnished gas and clean the carb good and it fired right up. No issues with quality of parts or spark

Its great being able to watch the Master at work. He explains everything, corrects himself and admits when he made a mistake which is rare. No BS and a very family friendly channel. Its great to have kids of all ages watching 'n learning.

I have a 1964 6hp Montgomery wards sea king that has only been ran 6 times in its entire life. It's pretty much a wall piece and still has factory spark plugs in it and still has the paint on them also. Great little motor

I think the gas cap has a breather that needs to be unscrewed to prevent a vacuum in the tank. It’s screwed back in so the tank doesn’t leak when it’s moved.
they did this on my 88 fourtrax. says on/off but theres a petcock below the tank and it doesnt lock the gas cap so my conclusion was leak prevention if the float needle fails to stop the flow. my honda harmony 215 has a throttle actuated fuel shut off valve.
Wow, ‘88 FourTrax! I got an ‘86 250cc in ‘89 as an 11yr old & it changed my life. I’d pull my Coleman Scanoe (w Minn-Kota) on a trailer (with the 250) with my buddy on the back to any pond/lake/river that we could get to, to fish and explore. I felt that I had life figured out!...except for the ON/OFF Selector of the Fuel Cap. 30 years later I realize what it was meant for from a fellow Mustie1 fan. The 250 is still at my folk’s farm under a shed roof of their main stable. I want to restore it. I need to restore it. I HAVE to restore it, as I still have the Scanoe & Trailer at my home, so: HONDAs make me happy. It’s no surprise that Mustie’s “stolen” outboard fires right up & pumped water above a spinning prop.
I had one of those back in 1989. Mine was 4,5HP. Ran for 5 hours on the built in tank in the ocean. Very nice, always started on the second pull. Only needed choke in -20 degrees celcius. Love that boat for $390.... :)
I really appreciate the way that you deliver your commentary. It is almost as if I am in the shop with you and you are talking to me. I work at a boat yard in maine. Love these old Hondas. Carbs are easy to clean,but normally don't have to they just run. Change gear oil and fuel lines.
I have had a plastic deck Honda HRX lawn mower since 2006. It's NEVER failed me. I noticed last year it'd idle but hunt so this spring I took the carb off, sprayed it out, and reassembled. Good as new! I paid 800 bucks for it in 2006 (not cheap) and I remember asking the guy at the Honda dealer (no big box store for me) if he thought it'd last me 10+ years. lol Dumb question!
yup harmony 215. $115 second hand store. $10 carb replacement and governor spring adjustment. back wheels are kind of binding at the moment. probably just need fresh lube.

Hey Mustie, I have a band instrument repair shop in my garage and, while my "wrenching" is a bit different than yours, the principles are largely the same. Diagnosis and problem solving. You have inspired me to take more care of my tools and really get my shop into shape. I thought that we also share the hoarder mentality that pays off in the end. I just need to be careful not to get too ahead of myself and get into fixing the stuff in my shed when I have horns to fix. WRENCH ON!!!!

Honda engine's or motors are very dependable, that's why you own one to do most of your tasks, fun and work. I have a Honda engine that has a John Deere garden tiller mounted on it. I call it my Hondeere ;-)
The white deposits on the lower gearbox says it was salt water used. On all older outboards I recommend at least a look at the water pump impeller. It may be pumping now but it may be minutes from coming apart. New gear oil is cheap insurance.
I have followed your videos for a while and like the pace that you use. I don't think you are too fast and therefore hard to follow. And you do present as ridiculously slow. Your pacing is spot on.
He certainly is good at inspiring confidence and increasing competence. I have absolutely been able to do things that I would not have even tried without my education at Mustie University.
Great video again bud. We in the UK call them both split pins and cotter pins. Loved the makeshift pond, but I think you dribble over your floor a bit haha. A few of the counties hear, have designated the their lakes combustible fuel free, so electric motors only. Oh and I was always taught that if it's combustion it's an engine, if it electric it's a motor lol.
Great video as always. Quick tip you can tape or tie with some string, some heavy plastic, like a piece of old tarp, down the side of the shaft where the water outlet/exhaust is, then just leave it drape down over the water outlet into the bucket, it stops the water from going everywhere and recycles it back into the one bucket. You can get away with using duck tape to make a little redirect for the water/exhaust outlet.

The red Karmann Ghia brought back some great memories for me. It was my first car. Bought it in N.J. and drove it to Florida. When I went to install a new radio Inside the fuse box, all I could find was 6 volts. 1966 was the last year they did that. So, the radio ran off of a little 12 volt Ni-Cad battery. It worked real well! Using 6 volts in Florida was no big deal, because it never gets below 40 degrees. I sure loved that car.

I checked the serial number its a 2 hp engine. Looked at the owners manual available on line shud have 10w-40 for a wider outside temp range. Oh the anode is standard equipment,
Some of the various small engine repair manuals have diagrams showing how to tie a knot for the starter handles. The way you did it results in too small a knot that will eventually just pull through the handle. Wish I could describe it but, a diagram is worth a thousand words. Love your videos. Please keep making them.

Re: end knots... figure 8 knots work better than just an overhand. I have A) had overhand knots come out on their own. B) had overhand knots jam and be hard to remove. A figure 8 doesn't seem to self loosen, yet is still undoable.

I had a 1974 Celica ST! I loved that car! I got it used when it was nearly 20 years old. Converted it from a 4 speed to a 5 speed. It was very nice to drive and very attractive styling. It's the one car from my 'youth' that I'd love to have again.

Hi chap. great video, and nice find. These are a lovely little motor. I noticed you did not change the impeller. As the motor has sat for a long time, I would stay that will be now hard, brittle and due to fail. Also when you are running the motor in a bucket I like to put a squirt of dashwash in the water as that helps break down any salt deposits built up within the cooling system. Yes Honda do make good units, I believe the Honda Civic/Accord cars are Good, ( unsure about their others ) I have a 2020 Honda motorbike, they Do Build Good Quality!! This one sounded sweet running and will serve a small boat for many more years!!
You lucky dog, that's when they had the better carbs, and I've been looking for one of those. Have come across ones slightly larger around here..with people who want like $1200 for them, but I need a small one like that for my small duck boat, had been running it w/a 1958 Chrysler mtr.,which runs like a top, but a friend knocked a pole digger onto it and it broke the fuel cap,have yet to find a replacement.Would have replaced that fuel line though ;) Lil says she takes a bath at the cabin every yr...and that's good enough! Would have bought that boat, even if it's the last thing I need to add another around here!
Mustie1, the best tool for picking out tight knots is a whine bottle cork screw. Work it into the knot where the rope crosses itself. This works on nylon straps too. Hope this helps some people
Wow - 30 bucks, what a score. I bet if they used it as a dingy motor on a sail boat its one that can lay on its side (yep, confirmed by the extensions on the plastic opposite the handle). We had to have that so it could lay in the lazerette inside the boat. This makes it desirable to sailing folks. Its hard to find these anymore in a 4 stroke. I paid 450 for one that needed a carb rebuild.
I just bought one of these today.. Tried in the back yard just to see how it works. Started in the first try. Looks pretty strong and sturdy. Cannot wait to go to a lake and have fun with it!
found a 1998 yamaha 2hp two stroke for $20 at a yardsale last weekend. it was covered in dust but after a clean up and cleaning the carb she fired up and looks great. its so satisfying.
I feel at home in your workshop. Generally I knew where everything was. Others thought it may be the town tip. Never threw anything away as it just may come in one day, usually it did.
I have the same one. Came off a bumper boat ride...mint still had the plastic film on the stickers. I believe it is 2 hp, there is a restriction plate under the carb that might give you more power if you remove it. That is a sight glass and it is for the oil. Change the drive pin in the prop with one that will break easily and it will save your prop one day (learned that one the hard way). I replaced the kill switch with a toggle switch because you have to hold the original switch until the motor completely stops or it will light up again and you'll crash into something! Water pump might need to be replaced, engine is not water cooled just the exhaust leg. Gas cap has a vent you need to unscrew to let air in. I always run gas with a bit of two cycle oil in mine. You scored on this motor.
I imagine there's stuff for sale that he's applied his magic to. I bet most of it goes to the locals though which is as it should be, and the way most anyone else in his position would do.

@A Dreamer nailed it. Any machine designed for the purpose of converting energy into useful mechanical energy is a motor, regardless if the inputted energy is chemical, electrical, or what have you. However, only motors that run off of combustion (external or internal) are engines.
I'm doing a boat motor myself. A Yamaha 2 stroke 3 cylinder with 3 carbs 60HP. So I was wondering about the filling transmission fluid from the bottom and not the top. And you gave me the answer to why. Thank you good sir. Nice video, to bad it was not in worst condition :)

Definitely split pin , cotter pin is tapered pin with nut on end that holds cranks onto BB on older bicycles.

@Dragomir Ronilac Honda does use air cooling for those small motors. Like a lawnmower. Easy to bench test as no water tank or earmuffs needed.

Honda engine's or motors are very dependable, that's why you own one to do most of your tasks, fun and work. I have a Honda engine that has a John Deere garden tiller mounted on it. I call it my Hondeere ;-)

The white deposits on the lower gearbox says it was salt water used. On all older outboards I recommend at least a look at the water pump impeller. It may be pumping now but it may be minutes from coming apart. New gear oil is cheap insurance.
I have followed your videos for a while and like the pace that you use. I don't think you are too fast and therefore hard to follow. And you do present as ridiculously slow. Your pacing is spot on.

Great video again bud. We in the UK call them both split pins and cotter pins. Loved the makeshift pond, but I think you dribble over your floor a bit haha. A few of the counties hear, have designated the their lakes combustible fuel free, so electric motors only. Oh and I was always taught that if it's combustion it's an engine, if it electric it's a motor lol.
They are all prime movers.
Great video as always. Quick tip you can tape or tie with some string, some heavy plastic, like a piece of old tarp, down the side of the shaft where the water outlet/exhaust is, then just leave it drape down over the water outlet into the bucket, it stops the water from going everywhere and recycles it back into the one bucket. You can get away with using duck tape to make a little redirect for the water/exhaust outlet.

The red Karmann Ghia brought back some great memories for me. It was my first car. Bought it in N.J. and drove it to Florida. When I went to install a new radio Inside the fuse box, all I could find was 6 volts. 1966 was the last year they did that. So, the radio ran off of a little 12 volt Ni-Cad battery. It worked real well! Using 6 volts in Florida was no big deal, because it never gets below 40 degrees. I sure loved that car.
I used to have one of these and make sure you open the gas tank vent on top, learned that the hard way

Amazing how a few curves really improved the looks of that boat.
I checked the serial number its a 2 hp engine. Looked at the owners manual available on line shud have 10w-40 for a wider outside temp range. Oh the anode is standard equipment,
Some of the various small engine repair manuals have diagrams showing how to tie a knot for the starter handles. The way you did it results in too small a knot that will eventually just pull through the handle. Wish I could describe it but, a diagram is worth a thousand words.

Re: end knots... figure 8 knots work better than just an overhand. I have A) had overhand knots come out on their own. B) had overhand knots jam and be hard to remove. A figure 8 doesn't seem to self loosen, yet is still undoable.

I had a 1974 Celica ST! I loved that car! I got it used when it was nearly 20 years old. Converted it from a 4 speed to a 5 speed. It was very nice to drive and very attractive styling. It's the one car from my 'youth' that I'd love to have again.

Hi chap. great video, and nice find. These are a lovely little motor. I noticed you did not change the impeller. As the motor has sat for a long time, I would stay that will be now hard, brittle and due to fail. Also when you are running the motor in a bucket I like to put a squirt of dashwash in the water as that helps break down any salt deposits built up within the cooling system. Yes Honda do make good units, I believe the Honda Civic/Accord cars are Good, ( unsure about their others ) I have a 2020 Honda motorbike, they Do Build Good Quality!! This one sounded sweet running and will serve a small boat for many more years!!
Oil floats on top of water, so does gasoline.
If you get water or engine coolant in the oil, it goes straight to the bottom of the sump.
What's a sump?

You lucky dog, that's when they had the better carbs, and I've been looking for one of those. Have come across ones slightly larger around here..with people who want like $1200 for them, but I need a small one like that for my small duck boat, had been running it w/a 1958 Chrysler mtr.,which runs like a top, but a friend knocked a pole digger onto it and it broke the fuel cap,have yet to find a replacement.Would have replaced that fuel line though ;) Lil says she takes a bath at the cabin every yr...and that's good enough! Would have bought that boat, even if it's the last thing I need to add another around here!
Mustie1, the best tool for picking out tight knots is a whine bottle cork screw. Work it into the knot where the rope crosses itself. This works on nylon straps too. Hope this helps some people
Wow - 30 bucks, what a score. I bet if they used it as a dingy motor on a sail boat its one that can lay on its side (yep, confirmed by the extensions on the plastic opposite the handle). We had to have that so it could lay in the lazerette inside the boat. This makes it desirable to sailing folks. Its hard to find these anymore in a 4 stroke. I paid 450 for one that needed a carb rebuild.
Water sits below the oil. But often on outboard lower ends it emulsifies into the oil.

I just bought one of these today.. Tried in the back yard just to see how it works. Started in the first try. Looks pretty strong and sturdy. Cannot wait to go to a lake and have fun with it!
found a 1998 yamaha 2hp two stroke for $20 at a yardsale last weekend. it was covered in dust but after a clean up and cleaning the carb she fired up and looks great. its so satisfying.

I feel at home in your workshop. Generally I knew where everything was. Others thought it may be the town tip. Never threw anything away as it just may come in one day, usually it did.
I have the same one. Came off a bumper boat ride...mint still had the plastic film on the stickers. I believe it is 2 hp, there is a restriction plate under the carb that might give you more power if you remove it. That is a sight glass and it is for the oil. Change the drive pin in the prop with one that will break easily and it will save your prop one day (learned that one the hard way). I replaced the kill switch with a toggle switch because you have to hold the original switch until the motor completely stops or it will light up again and you'll crash into something! Water pump might need to be replaced, engine is not water cooled just the exhaust leg. Gas cap has a vent you need to unscrew to let air in. I always run gas with a bit of two cycle oil in mine. You scored on this motor.

Technically correct, but the terms are now used interchangeably for gas engines so... language evolves.
Motor is derived from the word motive as in motive force. Animals were motors for a long time.

Any machine designed for the purpose of converting energy into useful mechanical energy is a motor, regardless if the inputted energy is chemical, electrical, or what have you. However, only motors that run off of combustion (external or internal) are engines.
I'm doing a boat motor myself. A Yamaha 2 stroke 3 cylinder with 3 carbs 60HP. So I was wondering about the filling transmission fluid from the bottom and not the top. And you gave me the answer to why. Thank you good sir. Nice video, to bad it was not in worst condition :)

It's called a shear pin here. If the prop gets caught on something at shears that pin off and won't break your shaft. Yeah I know that's what she said
