Playing in The Viking Backgammon Classic in Minneapolis Minnesota

- We’re in Minneapolis and I’ll be spending the next few days (I hope) competing in the Viking Backgammon Classic. There are four divisions, including the Open players AKA the best in the room, advanced, intermediate and beginner. After playing in novice in Chicago, I’ll be calling my home intermediate this weekend and will be throwing it down with 16 other plays for what will be a fun filled and eventful few days. The competition is fierce. The rewards are epic and the friendships are priceless. Let’s roll some dice!

I love seeing how well you've done with all of this. The quality of your videos are great, and hopefully they get more traction and get other people excited about backgammon.
I'm not sure if this is would be feasible for you or not, but I live in Japan, and there's a big three-day tournament/festival here that goes on in May. They have lots of top players, both from Japan and overseas. Might make for a really cool video!

Oh we would LOVE to do that. Going to Japan for a backgammon tournament quickly rose to the top of our list. My wife spent a summer there in 2015 and absolutely loved the country. I don't know if we will be able to make it happen yet, but it's definitely something we want to save up for. Do you happen to know the name of that tournament/festival? Cheers! 😄

Yes! We are too. Nick does an excellent job! I credit his commentary with really getting me excited to try tournaments out. I've had his book for a while, but I haven't fully dug in because of my lack of skills with the cube, but I think I'm finally getting to a place where it would be perfect. I'm definitely still a novice with the cube though, haha. Cheers! 😀

i saw some great boards around the players; james is playing a talat board from fm gammon, if i'm not mistaking. would be great to hear about their considerations for that buy and how happy they are with their decision.

Do it! Do the tournament! 😃We're playing a newly acquired FM Mete board in this video. I played on a similar board in another tournament and fell in love. The build quality and sounds that FM boards produce are unlike anything else I've played. Very happy with my purchase, would recommend.

How good were the intermediate players? I'm like a 19ER on backgammon galaxy, so just "OK".... Will be in Vegas for the tournament, but I don't know.....,
Hi Horace! The nice thing about the Viking Classic is there were four divisions (Open, Advanced, Intermediate, Novice). So I'm sure the intermediate wasn't punching as heavy as a regular three division intermediate. I'd imagine we were all in the 12-15+ PR range. Normally intermediate is probably a little lower (8-10+?). I can't be certain.
The important thing is to have fun! Get a couple practice matches in before hand to get the jitters out. I always play better when I do those two things. It's an absolutely amazing time, win or lose, if you let it! Good luck and cheers! 😀
