  • Cave Creek is a rockhounder's paradise. While various rocks and minerals can be found throughout its hillsides, what it is arguably most famous for, is its world-renown red jasper.
Come along as I take you to a newly discovered spot, where the hills are ripe with red and purple jasper, as well as rattlesnakes!

Beautiful stones. The natives would sometimes knapp arrow heads or blade from jasper when other options where scarce. Every now and then, you might find a red jasper point laying about after the monsoon washes it up.

Beautiful specimens, Regan. Nice hike too. We’ll have to check it out. Take care always.

Thanks James! It’s a great hike even if you’re not rockhounding. Really nice and quiet. Definitely give it a go :)

Beautiful Red Jasper, huge thank yous again for the specimens you sent me; the Jasper in this spot certainly has more of a purple hue and some interesting inclusions in it compared to the very red Cave Creek Jasper. Both lots are extremely beautiful.
I couldn’t even see that Rattlesnake until you zoomed in, so camouflaged against his natural background, but jeez, he was rattling off a distinct warning, “I’m not happy, leave me alone, I’ve not eaten for a long time”!
Great video my friend, beautiful blue skies. ✌️😎💙 from Wales. Rog. 👍

Thanks so much Rog! I’m glad you liked the samples I sent. There are so many spots out in Cave Creek I still have to explore. I’m sure I’ll find some even nicer ones soon 😄
Those snakes sure have a way of blending in. Last week, I went on 4 hikes and saw a rattlesnake each time. I rather enjoy seeing them. You get used to them after a while. Once you realize that they’re very docile, and are just rattling out of defense, you become at ease with them… though you still have to watch where to step 🤣

I had land in Apache county. You could dip your hand into the ground and pull up jasper, petrified wood and fragments of Zuni clay potting. There were thousand year old petroglyphs, behind my property. Beautiful area.

Having just moved to Phoenix from Massachusetts, so far I find this state absolutely beautiful…BUT…I come from a state where deer ticks in spring (Lyme disease) and the occasional Black Bear are my only concern in the woods. I’m definitely one of those people who grew up never camping and such so now I find myself terrified of snakes, scorpions, spiders, etc. but I also love mountain biking and seeing this amazing state. I would never gawk at or mess with a snake on the trail, but I’ve also heard that they only rattle before striking less than half the time. I’m curious what other common sense strategies you employ while out on your adventures to avoid being zapped.

I wear the snake proof boots when I'm in the brush this time of year.

Good call! I’ve thought about investing in some myself! I’ve had a few too many close calls. Might me time when I’m backcountry bushwhacking.

How far do you hike from the parking area? Thanks for the video!

Great question. It’s less than 4 miles round trip with very little elevation gain. It’s just a really nice, scenic walk really. The trail goes further and links onto other trails if you want a little exercise while you’re out there.

Thanks! Some really diverse patterns up there. I’ll have to go back and have a more thorough look around. I like that poppy-patterned red Jasper. It always polished up so beautifully.
