Honda S2000 | 9,000rpm to reach nirvana | Future Classics with Becky Evans S2 E7

  • The Honda S2000 may not feel like a car that should be considered a classic as it still looks modern even 20-plus years later. The looks still remain the secondary attraction as the real selling point is that glorious singing VTEC engine.
Late '90s and early '00s Japanese performance cars were really on form during that era, and the S2000 might just be the king when it comes to pure motoring fun.

Becky's enthusiasm matches mine each time I Rev up my 03 s2k I've owned since, well, 2003! I'll be 90 in June 024. A joy on our curving and hilly Wisconsin country roads. Honda should really have never stopped making them to be honest. I just feel they still have a place in the market. I'd love to pick up a modern day version myself and I'm sure I wouldn't be alone in saying that. Don't get me wrong the Type R is a great car (not too keen on the looks) but yeah I just wish they brought something like this back into their range.

Unfortunately the market for such a focused sports car wasn't large enough even back in the late 2000 aughts to keep the S2K around. And as time goes on, the percentage of car enthusiasts continues to decline. Aside from the NSX, the S-series cars were the only purpose-built sports cars Honda ever produced. On top of that, given the 30 year gap between the S800 and the S2000, it's not likely that we'll see another S car any time soon. Even if that were to happen, it's highly unlikely that a naturally aspirated, high-revving engine would once again find a place in such a car (provided that an internal combustion engine would be used at all given Honda's commitment to eliminating their use of the ICE). Furthermore, the costs associated with developing an entirely new sports car platform would have a modern S car selling at prices most would not be willing to pay, especially were the car absent of the modern conveniences that so many buyers demand today.
These days enthusiasts should consider themselves fortunate that Honda has the engineering ability to take a budget compact car like the Civic and turn it into the CTR. A car that comes with truly impressive levels of performance along with most all of the conveniences that today's buyers want, while also being far more practical than a sports car like the S2000. I don't care for the looks either, but it appears that today's younger buyers don't seem to mind given the level of performance the car offers.

I bought one of the last ones coming over on the boat from Japan.
It was discounted from £29,000 to £19,950.
I ran it for5 years, the only problem mechanical was the roof rubbed the frame and caused a hole to appear, this was after 3 and a half years.
They supplied a new roof and I paid the labour to fit it, also the wiring rubbed against the car frame causing a misfire.
Great car, the only snag now is the road tax, the emissions when I sold it meant it was heading for £500 per year, it might be more now.
Traded it in for £14,000 eleven years ago and paid £23,500 for a 20 month old BMW Z4 3.5 S Drive manuel (only 17 in the country) made for the track with 12,000 miles on the clock from BMW main dealer.
Still got it, just clocked 60,000 miles, can’t find a better car for fun factor. But …….
27mpg. Fun comes at a cost. My other car is a hybrid, brilliant but the soul of a fridge.

To clarify, the redline of the F20C is 8,800 RPM - 9,000 RPM is where the rev limiter kicks in. The earlier S cars revved even higher. As a motorcycle manufacturer, Honda was certainly no stranger to when it came to producing high-revving engines. Back in the 60's they had GP bikes that were capable of reaching 21,500 RPM.

This is true, my daily driver, diesel, E Class Merc is very nearly as quick as my S2000. BUT, I know which one I prefer to be in 🙂 The S2000 has very little straight line speed on track, but if I drive it well, I can use its handling nimbleness to out-pace more powerful cars in corners. However, it's quite a tricky car to drive on the limit, but more rewarding for that. But yes, if I go off the boil, I stand a very real chance of being embarrassed by a Focus ST! So it's more we're buying into the last of the pure bred ICE cars, before electronic gears and throttle, traction and stability control, detracted from the purity of the driving experience and started to do everything for us.
The RX7 is different however; my 1999 RS is nearly as quick as my 911 Turbo, so I'd not put that in the same category as the S2000, as the last series of RX7 are still rapid by todays' standards.
