People are just dumb. If an artist naturally matures with time and decides to make deeper songs to express what they go through, people complain and say they should’ve stayed the same. If an artist doesn’t mature and always makes the same music, they call them repetitive, immature and boring... I hate it. I personally think that Avril’s first albums were very cool and fun, but they can’t give me the magical experience that “Head Above Water” does, you can feel all her pain through her voice and music, she even sounds better vocally. I also like “Goodbye Lullaby” and “Avril Lavigne” more than her first albums. Anyways, it is what it is.

But Im so glad shes back and she has been my number 2 artist most listened on the whole Spotify Wrapped that happened a few days ago. Head Above Water is beautiful. It sucks that it wasnt nominated for a grammy as well but there’s a reason they’re called “Scammies”.

Practically the teenage movies were based on her change of style for the "emo" girl and the "popular" girl. But there is something strange here: For the era “The Best Damn Thing” she imposed the concept of “popular girl but pink punk” and managed to combine the feminine with the punk, while in her previous eras it was darker and “I don't follow female stereotypes ”. She is an EMO, POP-PUNK, ROCK, and even SOUL icon.

Why she's so flop now in your country (Canada)? She's one of your country's pride but most Canadians don't support her now. In fact, she's more famous in Japan in all aspects from charts to sales. Her Girlfriend song has now sold 3.3M copies in Japan alone that means, its already 3x diamond. Also, her first 3 albums in Japan was certified diamond but in Canada only her Let Go album. So sad that she's not been supported most people of Canada when Avril herself is a proud Canadian. 😞

I excitedly said to my boyfriend "hey, I think this is the same place" and the person behind the counter got really excited seeing me point to the screen and proceeded to tell me (in Japanese, she didn't speak English well but my boyfriend spoke Japanese and acted as a translator) about how she was in the shop watching and that Avril was really nice. I guess that's why I'm defensive of the song even if I can't stand it, because of that shop assistant being really proud Avril Lavigne did a J-Pop song and she got to meet her.

As for Head Above Water, I think her leaning into religious lyrics and imagery may have turned off a few fans which I think could have been mentioned in the video. Either way the song is great and I was also very pleased with the record. It Was In Me is the best song on it in my opinion. And still gets I believe. She's very underrated in many ways. I always felt like the devil's advocate loving Hello Kitty song. I think it's amazing fun track with a great sick instrumental. But I think she just shouldn't release it as a single. It was obvious that no one's gonna like her experimenting. They could't even handle that she's a grown woman and not a sk8er girl anymore. And Goodbye Lullaby is my favourite album. I love it for it's rawness and vocal performances.

Smile is indeed iconic (I have "crazy bitch" written in my wrist) and along with Everybody Hurts and Remember When the best track on the album.
Self titled is the one I listen to the least in her whole discography. It was supposed to be her rockest album (sans the cover, shot in April 2012) but the label made her replace some drums for drum machines and record singles with writers chosen by them. We never got to hear Echo, for example, a song praised by David Hodges at the time as one of Avril's best vocal performances and described as "on the veins of Nobody's Home but better". So the interference of Epic on self titled was even worse than RCA on GL.
HAW though was released through BMG, which gives artists support and creative freedom. Avril and Kylie Minogue are their biggest acts and both made their profits rise to the sky with selling, touring and streaming through 2018 and 2019, so on AL7 she might have even more support. This album is special and indeed her best released in the decade, and Birdie, Head Above Water and Devil being some of her career highlights.

Rock n Roll should have been the first single and top the charts everywhere!!! What an amazing pop rock track. Here´s to never growing up was too mediocre and was too much of an obvious throwback to her first single, in a bad way. I think she suffered from a "focus" or "image" problem, because it was like she refused to grow up? And the ballads were too melodramatic... I don´t know really how to market her in 2010 when she´s reaching 30 and the pop scene is electropop..but the albums were good anyway. And yes, the last one was great too. I´m really looking forward to the next.

To be honest,Head above water really needed more recognition, because both, vocally and lyrically speaking,She did that indeed!
But yeah it's kinda sad how her last 2 albums didn't do that well because of delays and single choices
When it comes to Goodbye lullaby,Before Head above water was released it was my favourite album out of five of her albums, Because lyrically it was good but it's really sad that she had to fight over single choices
My personal favourite songs from Goodbye lullaby are:
    1. Remember when
    2. Not enough
    3. Wish you were here
    4. Goodbye
    5. Smile
When it comes to her self titled,it was definitely missing something, for me at least
But I did appreciate "Rock n roll" "let me go" "Hush Hush" "hello heartache" and "give you what you like" as my favs
Also "hello kitty" wasn't fully flop,But just saying that Avril culturally appropriated Japanese culture..Was just ridiculous,This whole cultural appropriation will ruin the planet and divide it even more

The self titled did well because it was in the top 5 on the Billboard charts plus got Here's To Never Growing Up a top 20 USA hit song. Its sales were low because the music industry was facing a sales decline thus the streaming era has taken over. She also doesn't care for the charts. Her music isn't mainstream plus her promotion was low and its an album release after nearly 6 years.Lack of promotion meant her Head Above Water album didn't do too well. Her tour really did well though.

      Pop Dissected
no doubt. The more established a singer is, the more the label is involved in singer choices and musical directions. They always want to make sure the artists don’t go wild and sabotage the image that was successfully built through previous hits. The interference always backfires though. By choosing radio friendly singles/songs, the artist start being mixed in with any other ordinary pop artists. Artists want to evolve, experience, create something new, but labels only want to keep milking the old success until there is nothing left to cash out. It’s understandable on a business point, but toxic towards the artists.
This is just my personal speculation though, I do not know this for a fact.
Also it seems like Avril’s 4th and 5th album was just a compromise between Avril and her label. That’s how they turned out such a unsuccessful mess. It’s hard to promote a record properly when Avril doesn’t even like it to begin with. I mean how can you explain the purpose of your record when it’s not even how you wanted it to be.
