  • Welcome back to Pop Dissected! Today, we’re going to be looking at what went wrong with Ke$ha’s second studio record, “Warrior”. Kesha debuted with massive Top 10 hits and wild, fun loving, party girl image that was carefree and liberating. But once “Warrior” came along, she seemed to lose her traction, and in this video we’re going to find out why!

Kesha had a big breakthrough moment with Animal. I felt that album could have done better if there was additional singles releases and her chosen singles weren't as spread out. I would have done it:
    1. Tik Tok (Aug. '09)
    2. Blah Blah Blah (Dec. '09 Instead of Feb '10)
    3. Your Love Is My Drug (Feb. '10)
    4. Take It Off (May ''10)
    5. Blind (July '10)
For Cannibal I would have followed with:
    1. We R Who We R
    2. Blow
    3. The Harold Song
    4. Sleazy/Remixes
    5. Cannibal
Release Fuck Him, He's a DJ from his remix album.
This would allowed her to come in with Warrior with great momentum. The thing about Warrior it would be perfect for her to chose experimental singles that will prep fans for a change in her musical direction. I would have chosen these singles:
    1. Die Young
    2. Thinking of You
    3. Supernatural/Deconstructed Mix
    4. Love Into the Light

She wrote a lot of rock-driven song that were rejected by the label and as the series was coming to an end (and the deadline for her record too) I specifically remember her mother had to show up to writing session in order to come up with more “radio friendly pop songs”. Kesha is one of the least respected and underrated artists of our time. I’m glad she hit #1 with Rainbow but she has so much music out there that is looked over, especially hundreds of unreleased songs you can find on CZcams (there’s an unreleased playlist).
Warrior was honestly one of my least favorite albums from her... it was rushed, thrown together and was tightly controlled by Dr. Luke.
Her new album “High Road” drops January 31st but I already have a feeling it will underperform. I’m most excited to hear Kinky (ft. Ke$ha), Honey, & Father Daughter Dance.

C’Mon is seriously one of my favorite Kesha songs, especially off Warrior. Crazy Kids should have never been a single ESPECIALLY the remix with will.I.am. Thinking of You or Only Wanna Dance With You deserved a single release over that or even Dirty Love to show the rockier side of this album. But as far as pop Ke$ha, Warrior is my favorite. Hardly any skips for ME. Especially the deluxe edition. And definitely should have performed Last Goodbye a few times because it is one of her best songs.

It was released December 4th in the US... I remember lol. I went to target and bought the deluxe edition with the t-shirt.
I know the album leaked beforehand and recall reaction being pretty mixed. I remember people felt like the music wasn’t what she had stated it would be, and there were a few filler songs (I, too, felt like “C’Mon” was a poor second single choice). But I loved the album... I thought that it was better than Animal. She seemed to have grown so much! To me, “Thinking of You” should’ve been a single. That always seems to be the problem honestly, the singles these artists release are so out of tune with what fans want. Then there’s the obvious meddling from the record label. It’s a shame but I’m glad Kesha found her way back to the top.

This is quite interesting and explains something I found odd the last time I saw her perform live.
Prior to her Rainbow album dropping, she did a mini concert in Las Vegas to gear up for her full tour once the new album dropped. Not ONE song from Warrior was included in the set list. Absolutely none. I didn’t understand why at the time since she does have some bangers on there but now it makes so much more sense. I’m sure, for many reasons, she’d rather leave this era behind her.

  • @asadch7597

I actually disagree that Warrior had no growth, it definitely was deeper, fresh and had a newer 70s rock tone mixed with electro pop. She had songs that showed more deeper insight on emotions and self independence. Even the upbeat party songs on Warrior are very different sonically to Animal. But there was a major hold back for sure because of Luke and the label. So in some senses the album is hollow and depending to who.

  • @DavetheRave35
    @DavetheRave35 Před 4 lety

YES, I am so glad you brought this up! I have been a Kesha stan since I first heard TiK ToK back in October 2009 and I remember the Warrior era vividly and can concur what you said in this video. To me, Warrior is the album that "could've been", in the sense that its creative direction and intentions were manipulated and thwarted by Dr. L*ke and RCA. Between Cannibal and Warrior, she'd made a collaborative album with the rock band, The Flaming Lips, named 'Lip$ha' which has never been released and we'll likely never hear. Dr. L*ke didn't let Kesha and TFL release this rock album as he felt it would destroy her party girl image that had seen so much success and made him lots of money. In addition, Kesha has a rock song called 'Machine Gun Love' that she intended to be a part of Warrior, which Dr. L*ke and RCA again wouldn't let her release as it conflicted with her electro-pop sound. The song has only been performed live as part of the Warrior tour, with Kesha saying before each performance, "take your phones out now, this might be the only time you hear this song". It is clear that Kesha's second album, Warrior, was not allowed to be authentic to Kesha's vision, develop organically and showcase her talents and inspirations. As a result, the album is a mixed bag of pop, EDM and rock influenced tracks that corporate men had a hand in. To me, the mixed intentions and suppressed creativity can be heard throughout the album, resulting in it underperforming. Warrior's EDM breakdowns were also fairly new to the mainstream, so Warrior was something of a guinea pig to Dr. L*ke's new craze that wouldn't catch on until a couple of year later. On lesser notes, I think the album artwork is not very appealing on the shelf or online music stores and the single choices were wrong. Die Young was evidently a good choice due to its strong performance, but C'mon (as fun as it is) and Crazy Kids were poor choices. In particular, the tacking on of Will.I.Am to Crazy Kids was really an empty grab at attention and exposure to try and regain a top 10 hit. To me, Supernatural, Gold Trans Am, All That Matters (the bridge is heavenly!) and Last Goodbye could all have been good single choices, among others. The latter, Last Goodbye was highly requested by fans (and I think Kesha herself) as a single to RCA, so much so that a relevant hashtag trended on twitter, but RCA clearly refuses to listen. Much like what happened to The Harold Song on Cannibal, another song that could have shown Kesha's range as an artist but didn't receive RCA support. I believe The Harold Song even charted in the US, with Kesha tweeting that if us fans got THS into the top ten, her label would release it more officially, but alas, I don't think it did reach top ten and we were left with another example of Kesha not being allowed to flourish and showcase her creativity and talent. Unfortunately, I think High Road (out January 31st!) is receiving similar treatment by RCA, as they are trying to regain her pop dominance by not letting Kesha release songs that she wants as singles, such as Tonight.
Thanks for another great video, Pop Dissected! I hope this comment isn't too long, but I just have so much to say! Hopefully Kesha can get out of her record deal soon and we will see her in all her glory 🙌🌈✨

I also feel like the lyrics really capture the essence of Gen Z as a collective (kids who grew up in the 2010s.) We really are THAT generation- the generation that decided to not put up with the bullshit that the other generations have (fighting for LGBTQ+ rights, #MeToo movement, individuality) . We’re fearless and we fight for what we believe in, and I felt she really captured that with the song.😌🏳️‍🌈
