Warren moon is unbelievably underrated. He had one of the strongest arms the sport has ever seen. In today's nfl, he'd regularly be a 5,000-yard passer. I think that adds to his legend
Warren Moon was, to be honest and humble in my praise, second to none! Can you imagine if Warren Moon had been a 49er with all that tallent? I'm glad Warren Moon is in the Hall of Fame!
I feel like he's a great guy but at the end of the day he has the same number of super bowl rings as you and I do. Completion percentage is below 60% and he almost threw as many interceptions as touchdowns

I grew up watching the Oilers from the 70s and 80s Earl Campbell, Dan Pastorini, Billy Johnson, Mike Renfro, Dave Casper. Miss those days and their old uniforms too.

I grew up in Houston during this time. I never realized that Warren Moon was not only a great QB but also a greater man. He kept his head throughout and never lost it publicly even though he would have been justified in doing so. Neither the Oilers nor the city deserved him. Wherever he is and whatever he's doing, I hope he's successful and content!

Oh yeah, it would of been so horrible.
His baby was born the day before the game and he was there for it. He had no excuse what so ever to not want to get on a flight to play the next day to help his team win. If his baby or wife had complications or something it would be one thing but there is no mention of that.
That player is selfish. I do not mind letting a player go witness their babies birth but if mom and baby are said to be healthy after the birth go do your job.
If I was his coach or teammate I would have lost respect for him.
Very sad story. Not even a Houston fan. I remember as kid finding it very odd to see Houston colors in Tennessee and this was before they rebranded as the Titans. Bud Adams was so petty he wouldn't even give back the uniforms. Hope one day they do, Houston deserves the chance to rock the Luv Ya Blues again

Warren Moon my favorite QB of all-time. What a pro, and although a HOF vastly under appreciated.
I was such a diehard Oilers fan during this time. I remember every one of these games during this season. I remember going to school each week being so excited of the winning streak they were on talking football with friends. When they lost to Kansas City in the playoffs, I was devastated. Probably even more devastated than the Buffalo comeback the year prior because I truly thought that 93 team was more talented than that 92 team. It just felt so wrong for them to go out like that.
Side note: it was a weird feeling seeing the Titans in Oilers gear last week. Brought back memories of another time.

Same here! I was a freshman at UT at the time and I refused to watch the Super Bowl that year. That's how devastated and angry I was.
The Oilers (during ‘87-‘93) were one of the most talented teams to never reach a Super Bowl. People have to remember, the NFC was the superior conference at that time , the AFC was second, it was Buffalo during their run to 4 in a row in the ‘90s and everyone was basically far behind them, and so the fact that the Oilers never got to a Super Bowl, let alone an AFC championship game during that span is one of the most underachieving things ever.
I’m not trying to be argumentative at all but I just don’t agree. I lived through that era as a teenager and followed the NFL pretty seriously with all the football cards which was popular at the time. No one cared about Houston. All the talk was about the 49ers and some people liked the Redskins, Giants, Broncos, and Cowboys. The Bills were obviously talented but few kids liked them. The Oilers were just thought of that gimmicky above average team that passed all the time. Moon, Givins, Jeffries were the offense (with Munchak and Matthews leading the way). Then the defense was always considered the liability with a few decent players like Sean Jones and Lathon. You knew you could beat them but you can’t overlook them or you’ll be sorry.
Don't forget the Browns and Bengals were really good mid-late '80s too. Broncos and Dolphins as well. But in late 80s til late 90s true. Bills were always right there.

Buddy Ryan was blessed with the ability to piss a whole lotta people off & have people willing to run through a wall for him at the same time.

I've been watching the NFL since 1978. Ive been a Dallas fan since then. So i remember a lot about the Houston Oilers. Known as the HOUSE OF PAIN, The inventors of the Run and Shoot. That defense was the Eagles Defense when Buddy got there. With That defense and high-powered offense, it made them extremely dangerous each and every week. Its a ashame their team is gone. I miss the tradition of the NFL. most of it is gone.
Oilers didn't invent run and shoot. It was run at high schools and colleges, and introduced at the pro level in the USFL. It was a gimmick that never won anything at a pro level.
The only pro chance it had of winning is the first year of Brady and moss with the patriots

He coached in the CFL the Birmingham team. He has since passed away.

It crazy that this season of the Old Oilers. Is now 30 years old! Its insane story. Hard to believe one season had so many controversy in 1993 alone.
The fatal flaw of the 46 defense: a high powered passing offense. The only loss in the Bears 1985 season was to the Dolphins, who had a high powered passing offense.
One would think Buddy wouldn't want to talk crap on the "Run N' Shoot" since it was a high powered passing offense that was going to burn it, and even if they got past KC in the playoffs, they were still going to have to face Buffalo, who would gash the 46 easily.
The only reason the Oilers lost to the Chiefs was because of the Oiler offense playing badly. All the crap Buddy was talking and they lost in the playoffs because the Oiler offense failed AGAIN.
The Dolphins played a 3WR offense, with Nat Moore as the third receiver. Add to that the reigning NFL MVP at the time, Dan Marino, with his famed quick release, plus some luck, and the end result was that Miami scored 31 points by halftime.
Belichick would later mention that Buddy’s Eagles would get torn apart by Gibbs’s Redskins, who also played three WRs.
Buffalo’s K-Gun offense would’ve shredded Houston’s 46 defense especially with all of the injuries they had in the secondary.
You really have to feel for Jack Pardee. A football lifer who had a fine football mind, was a good guy, was a decent enough coach. But when you throw in a borderline sociopath like Ryan.... There are a very few people in the world who have such great leadership skills they can deal with a cancer like that and somehow keep the train on the tracks. Pardee was not one of them.
Pardee was a good coach, just in the wrong situation. They needed an alpha dog, and that simply wasn't his way. Helping the team to heal from the aftermath of Jeff Alm's death is arguably his best leadership moment

43:45 and onwards still breaks my heart, knowing that if only the Oilers quit tearing themselves apart, they could've been something truly great. Instead, they lost their stars, their fanbase, and their home. Their whole fate could've been changed by just one win in January, but they still let it slip away.

@@RB01.10I think Dallas wins in 92 hands dow. But based on the way the season was going, the 93 Cowboys weren't as strong as the year before and the Oilers were getting red hot. If the Oilers continued to play the way they did before the playoff game, I think the Oilers beat the Cowboys in 93.
The one thing that runs through the whole sad and disappointing history of the Houston Oilers was Bud Adams, the trashiest piece of human garbage in Houston history. The story fails to mention that Adams had forced Houston to come up with the money for a major renovation of the Astrodome a few years before, at a time when the crash of the oil boom had local government gasping for air. A poll by a local politician who wanted to know if there would be political problems letting the Oilers leave found that only 6% of Houstonians had a positive opinion of Bud Adams. The general consensus was, good riddance.
In all of my years, I've never heard one good peep of anything about Bud Adams. I'm sorry for you Oiler Fans, you deserved better! We had Pat Bowlen here in Colorado and man we were spoiled!

I am in TN and I can't stand Bud Adams. He conned the dumb fans of TN to use taxpayer funds to build a stadium. Hell, Adams had enough money to build the stadium on his own, but he wanted the public to do it. This is the problem I have with capitalism. When a poor person gets assistance from the taxpayers, they are considered trash. But when the rich gets assistance from the taxpayers, it is considered good business.
Being born and raised from Houston I enjoyed this whole video. 💯

The Astrodome still looks like a pretty decent stadium, even though I'm sure the facilities are well beyond antiquated now. I'm wondering if they should convert it into a museum just to keep the history of the teams that played there alive.
I'm with ya, JB. I grew up in South Texas. As a youngster I was a die-hard Oiler fan. In each of the '89, '90 and '91 seasons I saw one Oiler home game with friends and family. I was at the 1991 home game v Pittsburgh when Houston clinched the AFC Central title.
Come to Nashville. Oilers play here 8 to 9 games a Season now! We are very friendly and inviting at Nissan Stadium, even to Texans or Houston fans. 🩵🤝

I remember the rivalry with the Steelers in the 70s. I visited Houston and when people there found out I was from Pittsburgh my money wasn't any good and people told me if the Oilers don't make it, we all hope the Steelers do. If I could change Football history, I would have the Oilers winning the Superbowl in 1977 or 1980. Firing Bum Philips, stupid move!

Basically, this was Buddy Ryan: If the head coach hired him (Weeb Ewbank-Jets; Bud Grant- Vikings; Neill Armstrong-Bears), Ryan would behave and not divide the team. If someone else (George Halas- Bears; Bud Adams-Oilers) went over the head coach (Mike Ditka-Bears; Jack Pardee-Oilers) and hired him, Ryan would make the defense HIS TEAM, split the roster, and give the head coach the middle finger--figuratively AND literally.
Every time a team moves it should happen like it did with the Browns… the city keeps the name, colors and logo and the new destination comes up with a new name altogether.
The city that’s left doesn’t own the team! Plain and simple! (With the exception of Green Bay)

Their 11 straight wins was the longest winning streak TO END A REGULAR SEASON since the ‘72 Dolphins. The ‘85 Bears won their first 12 games before losing to the Dolphins.

With an owner like Bud Adams, it's easy to see how Houston could lose the Oilers. Unfortunately the national media made it out like we hated football or didn't care, but we were all just tired of the constant drama and threats to move the team. I don't understand the recent nostalgia for them in Houston, it's been almost 30 years since they left and I'm still upset over how it all went down.

That would’ve been interesting as it’s only happened twice (Bills Vs Giants in Super Bowl XXV and Chargers Vs 49ers in Super Bowl XXIX).
I do think Dallas would’ve still beaten them both times had they been in there instead of the Bills. Dallas was stacked during that time.

God as my witness, I remember watching the 35-3 game with 2 of my cousins that day and when it was 35 to 3 Houston, all I kept saying over and over again is "It isn't enough." I had seen Houston choke away a 21 point lead vs Denver in a playoff game and I was basing my prognostication on that coupled with a gut feeling. I could have cleaned up that day if I only had put my money where my mouth was.
It took me until the Bills scored to make it 35-17 when I called my dad to see if he was watching the game. I left him a message saying to put the game on because the greatest comeback in NFL history was under way. You could just sense it. It felt inevitable.
Buddy Ryan did that same crap to Ditka. He couldn't pull it off in Philly a few years before! Don't know why he felt that way! His arrogance ruined the Bears dominance in the 80s when he left after the 85 season. He went to Philadelphia with this dominant defensive mentality, but it wasn't until the year after he left when the Philadelphia Eagles defense became so dominant under Bud Carson (defensive coordinator for Pittsburgh for 2 SB & LA Rams in 70-80s) that they still hold the NFL record for allowed yards in a season (3549) in a 16-game season! Screw Buddy Ryan; at least Gilbride went on to win 2 more SBs over a dynasty team both times!

To think the Greatest Wrestlemania of All-time happened there and seeing what condition it’s in now, someone told me in the last year that the Astrodome is just going to fall apart one day, and the last time it was used was probably April 1st 2001 that’s just sad
The worst part is that building is so full of asbestos that the bill to take it down will be higher than it would be normally. The size of the removal bill would be interesting to see, and suck immensely to pay. All just so that the building can be safely taken down. I know what Ron Simmons would say about this...

The AFC Division was crazy loaded with Talent Teams in the 90's and Houston Oilers was one of them, great team from the mid 80's coming into 90's. Oilers had allot of talented players few Hall of Famers, Underrated Pro Bowl players, Nice Uniform, and Big nice Stadium Astrodome. They had what it took to go to the Superbowl but it just allot of distractions and animosity inside the team. But they was fun to watch.

Until 1997 and 1998 Denver Broncos broke that AFC Superbowl losing curse. The underdog Broncos stopped the Defending Champs Packers team from back to back Championship. But it's funny cause they compare the Broncos to the sorry Colts at the time lol. Which Broncos was better than Colts before Peyton Manning even got drafted yet.
I was a huge Oiler fan as a kid. These guys were my childhood heroes. I had no idea what was going on behind the scenes. I remember how sad it was when they left Houston 😢. I tried to carry on as a Titans fan but it just wasn’t the same. I still have great memories of the players 💙

Grew up an Oilers fan and still hate that there are no Oilers in Houston. Pretty much stopped watching the NFL after they left. Moon, Carlson, White, Givens, Jefferies, Hill, Del Greco, McDowell, Robinson...such a great squad.

@@johncollins9989I think they could’ve. The 93 Cowboys were not as strong as the 92 team despite finishing with the NFC’s best record. They had to beat the Giants in the last game just to clinch the NFC East and home field throughout the playoffs. Had they lost, they’re hosting Minnesota in the wild card and then would have to win over the 49ers in San Francisco. Plus, the Oilers were the hottest team entering the playoffs. If you build off a momentum like the Oilers had and add two more wins, that team could’ve won the whole thing and gotten by Dallas.
@KWCline91 well obviously I think you forget just HOW good that era of the dallas cowboys were.. coming off a SB IN 92 they open up with back to back losses because of Emmitts hold which every one knows but then he he signs a contract and they win 7 straight games followed by back to back losses finishing out on a 5 game winning streak. So if you want to talk about "momentum" being the reason for beating Dallas, Dallas gad all the momentum in the world. They barely beat the Giants because Emmitt separated his shoulder early in the second quarter on a 40 yard run. That's because there's no place for someone like him in today's game. Lousy head coach and worse teammate.
You do not need to be a good head coach or teammate to be a good coach in the NFL.
If you are really good at being and OC or DC many will not care you were fired as a head coach every single time. If you took a list of some of the best OC and DC in NFL history who never had real success as a HC it does not take away from how good they were at OC or DC.
As for being a good teammate Buddy as a DC in some ways brought out more from the offense of his own teams by constantly provoking them and challenging them. Some people can positively respond to that and others obviously will not or it will only cause unnecessary problems.
I have seen the Raiders defense look bad for around 20 years and someone as abrasive as Buddy would have had a better shot to fix those defenses compared to what we got instead.
He was an asshole.

I'll never forget that playoff game oilers/bills my dad ALWAYS watched the NFL playoffs I walked in the door and he's sitting in the living room tv off and I said why isn't the game on he said it's over oilers up 35-3!
The same thing happened in my house. My uncle back then was living with us and was a big Jim Kelly fan and loved the Bills. Our Bears weren't in the playoffs, but we watched the Bills-Oilers game for my uncle and they turned off the TV as well just to find out the Bills won the game later. I'll never forget that day; I was 14 years old!

The Oilers only lost that game due to the Oiler offense playing badly.
Moon was sacked 9 times and the Oiler offense only rushed for 39 yards. Plus the 3 turnovers did not help either.
Even in the playoff loss Buddy was proven to be right about their offense.
@DanRaidersWarriorsSharksGiants Ever heard of winning 10-7 in the playoffs? The Run-and-Shoot was the most failed offense of the 90s. However, Buddy's defense choked.
That was their one last shot to put something as a championship run. They had their best shot in 1991 when they had the Broncos 2 times on 4th down and Elway converted in the divisional round. The next year was the 35-3 debacle. Then in 93 they went all in for Buddy Ryan to fire up the defense and when they went down 1-4 for the season, it looked that it was the last gasp for the Moon Oilers. Well they went won 12 straight. They had a 10-0 lead against the Chiefs who they crushed during the season. Then the offense stalled and the defense gave up big plays and by the time the Oilers tried to make the comeback it was over. It was all over for the Pardee Oilers because Moon was released and went onto Minnesota. Buddy Ryan went to Arizona as the head coach. Maybe the Oilers would have given the Cowboys a tougher game than what the Bills did. We will never know.
Probably, the oilers beat the cowboys to win the Superbowl.

The next in 1994 the Oilers against the Cowboys in Texas Stadium only lost by a touchdown and held Dallas in check for most of the game without Warren Moon as QB. The Oilers were terrible that season, but they made it tough for the Cowboys. Still, Dallas got it done and won 3 Super Bowls out of 4 years. The Oilers just choked when they had a lead. Against the Broncos, they had a 21-3 lead and when it was 24-23 the Oilers got the ball down to the 2 and Elway over came 2 4th downs to get the Broncos into field goal range. That's why The Cowboys were the team of the 90's and the Oilers were a bunch of what could have been.

It is shocking though how their last game was so poorly attended, as the Expos had.

Same. It was the only NFL game that made me physically ill. To go from elation to devastation...sucks. The only good thing about not having the Oilers around is that for all these seasons since, i have no vested interest and can watch games stress-free.
Damn the Buffalo loss was before I was a a Houton Oiler/Tennessee Titan fan, I've heard something like that happening but then on "A football life" watched that they actually blew a 35-3 lead........ it was so bad that they had to move to another city makes sense, but whose fault was it really if you can name one person.
Living in Texas off and on or many years, I was a Dallas Cowboys fan. But I always liked the Houston Oilers too. I agree with what my father sad - the franchise "never" recovered from losing that 35-3 lead against the Buffalo Bills.
Crazy this was 30 years ago--after watching this I am even more impressed that they ran the table to finish the season at 12-4 including beating the 'Niners despite all of this dysfunction....

Buddy Ryan was such a people person. He was so easy to get along with
I was at the game that was the final nail in the coffin, the divisional round game in Houston against the Joe Montana led Chiefs. Oilers blew another fourth quarter lead in the playoffs, granted it was only ten points but that buddy ryan defense was nasty but they did what all other oilers teams did choke. After starting 1-4 then winning 11 games in a row it felt differently this time that they may actually break through that year. The fans didnt care anymore and were tired of Bud Adams threatening to move that the mayor told him "dont let the door hit you on the way out"

A. Moon was sacked 9 times in the game which is straight up embarrassing for a playoff team that had won 11 games in a row who was @ home.
B. The Oilers offense turned the ball over 3 times?
C. The Oilers offense only rushed for 39 yards for the WHOLE game
The Oilers offense lost that game on their own and yet how you and many try to spin it as it was the fault of Buddy and his defense choking.
I once talked to a Browns fan that blamed the 2017 season they went 0-16 ONLY on Hue Jackson. I told him that the year before Jackson was hired they were 3-13 and always had a worse roster than the majority of the teams.
He still would only blame Hue Jackson for everything and gave the Browns owner and GM a 100% pass for everything.

As a die hard Oilers fan, I was devastated once the team left Houston for Tennessee.
I reluctantly attended a NFL game in Nashville and seeing the retired jerseys of guys like Warren Moon and Earl Campbell on display at some stadium in a city neither one of them ever played a football game just didn't seem right to me.
Anyhow, I wish the Oiler trademark and team history could have stayed behind in Houston

@crosstatt7441 I never really despised him for relocating the team because he was the owner and could do whatever he wanted to do so.
It's just that he didn't give the City of Houston and its fans enough time to come up with the money to make renovations to the Astrodome - which was renovated just a few years before by the expansion of seating.
He was on local TV saying how he wanted to keep the team in Houston and then the very next day, he announced the relocation.
It really was a sad day for us Oilers fans once we found out the team was leaving town for good.
Take it up with Roger Goodell see if he would take up returning the Oilers name to Houston that was the 90s
I'm a Chiefs fan and if we would of lost that game to save the Oilers, I'd be all for it. I miss the Oilers. I have never liked the Titans since the Oilers moved. I'm glad the Chiefs make the Titans lose to use contently now. Warren Moon was one of my favorite QB's of all time. The world would be a better place with the Oilers instead of the Texans.
