- In this All Sports History video we'll look back at what happened to the Houston Oilers and how Bud Adams (the owner) and city never saw eye to eye on a new stadium deal (before the Oilers left Houston).
Here's what this "Houston Oilers History" video covers:
The Houston Oilers were a founding member of the American Football League, a rival of the NFL. The team would become an iconic part of sports culture in Houston. So what exactly led to the team leaving the city they called home for 36 years? In today’s video we’ll look back at how one man’s obsession with wanting to build a new stadium led to the team packing up and leaving for good.
We'll also look back at some Houston Oilers highlights throughout their history, such as how the name was influenced by Texas history. Tennessee deserves their sports teams but the Oilers should be in Houston. They should rebrand the Texans to Oilers and get their history back.

I'm Cowboys fan whose aunt was an Oilers fan during this time.
If the Oilers hadn't blown those early 90s playoff games in dramatic fashion the way they did, they wouldn't have left Houston in the first place. Even a single AFC Championship Game appearance at minimum during that time would have convinced taxpayers to support a new stadium. Deep playoff runs have been known to move tax dollars to build a new stadium, as the Seattle Mariners in the 1995 would later prove.
Not a Houston fan and have never been there. But I miss the Oilers. I used to love watching as a kid Warren Moon throwing those bombs to Earnest Givens, Curtis Duncan and Haywood Jefferies. Loved those teams.
Classic uniforms and logo too, the whole Titans aesthetic just feels like a step down to me.

Funny...that's what Houston wanted as well. Alive or dead, Bud Adams was a first rate ass. His relationship with Houston began to sour way back in '80 when he fired Bum Phillips. He was Jerry Jones before there was a Jerry Jones...incapable of staying out of football operations. He was an exceedingly loathsome individual and to this day, his family holds the rights to the Oilers for pure spite.

@@RB01.10 the Oilers of 1979 were the best of the Oiler teams. Had they not been in the same division as Pittsburgh, there's no doubt that team would've beaten LA in the 1979 Super Bowl. The teams of the late 80s through the 90s were sadly inconsistent, evidenced by that spectacular collapse in Buffalo in the playoffs.

I'm a Vikings fan and I love our logo, but of all the other logos in the NFL, the Oilers just always really appealed to me.

I’d argue Texans are worse
Bud Adams kept threatening to move the Oilers a few times before. He threatened to move them to Seattle. (Before that city had the Seahawks). Then he threatened to move them to Jacksonville. The threat (or proposal) to move to Nashville I guess was the last straw for Harris County. The Mayor & the city of Houston & Harris County got tired of jumping through hoops for Bud Adams. The Nashville situation was NOT the 1st time Bud Adams tried to hold the city of Houston hostage. As much as I miss the Oilers I don't blame city & county government for telling Bud "Piss up a rope." I am no spring chicken anymore but I hope to see the Texans win a Superbowl before the heavenly father tells me to come home.

The city of Houston deserves the history, as well as the name, image and likeness of The Oilers back. Tennessee has ZERO affiliation with the original history, nor the players that played in Houston.

Grew up with the Oilers, went to see my first game in 1970. Still have my pom-pom from the Dolphins game in '78. Lived and died with the team all the way till the end. It's a damn shame our beloved Oilers were lost due to the overblown egos of Bud Adams and Bob Lanier. Their pissing contest cost us our team!!
Bud's GM demanded sex from the mayor of Houston as condition of any negotiations. The a-hole went so far to point to a cot in his office and asked for Kathy Whitmire to join him. End of negotiations as Bud laughed his ass off and Bud's son in law was livid.

I grew up as a fan of the Oilers. I have been, up until this offseason, a fan of the Texans. The Oilers are a part of Houston's history, whether Adams and his heirs want to acknowledge that or not. It was Houston that put them in what was at the time billed as the "Eighth Wonder of the World". It was Houston that packed that same building after the team lost a second consecutive AFC Championship game to the Steelers. It was Houston that cheered on Dan Pastorini, Warren Moon, Earl Campbell, and so many more. As long as those fans are alive, the Oilers will have a legacy in Houston. That said, McNair's Texans have no claim on that legacy and no business using those uniforms as throwbacks. If they wanted to retire the number 34 out of respect for what he did for the sport in this city, that is fine. But the Texans are a different team and need to focus on building their own history and legacy rather than coopting that of their predecessor.

Art Modell stole that team in the middle of the night. Not exactly the same as Houston not caring. For years the Oilers as an organization tried to work with the city, at a time when nobody cared. The Oilers *are* the Titans. They'll always be. The Texans, are the team from Houston that was established when the city learned to appreciate the NFL again. It's that simple.

Oilers records, history, colors belong in Houston, not in Tennessee! Something many Texans fans don't want, but this is part of our history. No matter how we think we are different, in many ways we are actually connected with the Titans. Just caught up in a feud between 2 guys named Bud Adams and Bob Lanier. Look at all of the former Oiler players, they look uncomfortable calling Tennessee home. The right thing, and probably best thing for Houston, it's former players, and the NFL is to return that name. RIP Curly Culp.
Its called team history for a reason, not location history, if Houston wants the Oilers so bad why didn't they try harder to keep them instead of building an expansion team a couple years later, the Texans have literally no connection to the Oilers other then location but again its called team history for a reason, Oilers HOF QB Warren Moon recently came out and said he believes the History should stay in Tennessee (which speaks volume), why? Because what do the Texans have in connection with the Oilers? The original hornets that moved in 2002 shouldve never been able to keep that name to begin with. in 2015 they chose to change their name to the Pelicans and by releasing the history name etc and Jordan jumped on that real quick. The year they moved out of Houston I became a Denver Broncos fan, I was station at Ft Carson CO. and had been living in Colorado off and on over the past 10 years. The Oilers moving didn't hurt as much, the lost to Joe Montana and the Chiefs broke my heart, but it was the lost to the Buffalo Bills that made me cry. I had grew up not to far from the Oilers training facility on Fannin St and was a die hard Oiler from as early as 1966. If it were possible I would be in favor on the Texans being renamed the Houston Oilers, the Titans could even keep all the old history of the Oilers just give us back our LUV YA BLUE.

One thing i will never understand is how the city of Houston couldn't manage to keep the Oilers in Houston but only a season or two later were able too create the expansion Houston Texans?? Same thing for the Cleavland Browns moving to Baltimore and becoming the Ravens but only a few seasons later we get the expansion Cleavland Browns. If you are able to get an expansion team started in your city why couldn't you just keep the team you already had???
IDK why, but the bottom line is that in their 36 year history, they failed to win let alone reach a Super Bowl in that time. I don’t know why they got so much praise though.

Houston fans never forgave Bud Adams for firing Bum Phillips. It was done so smack in the middle of a series of three straight successful seasons where they lost to the eventual SB champions. Houston fans have long memories, so after all of the threats to leave and continual demands to keep paying more for upgrades we finally called his bluff. We would have loved to have kept the Oilers, but not with Adams running it.
The whole BS where Adams and Tagliabue didn't let the new franchise take over the history and records of the Oilers, like the NFL did with the Browns and Ravens, is another sore point.
As others have stated, it wasn't an issue supporting the Oilers. It was squarely an issue with that greedy bastard of an owner, Bud Adams. The fact that he was allowed to retain ownership and licensing of the Oilers name, logo, etc, was and still remains a giant FU to the Houston fanbase. He was and still is a much reviled individual in Houston, 25 years after his departure. The firing of Bum and the awful teams he fielded in the early 80s were ominous foreshadowing of bad times to come.
Man, I used to love watching Earl Campbell run. That guy was the quintessential power running back and those AFC playoff games against the Steelers back in the late 70s were classics. Renfro's catch in the end zone that was ruled out of bounds sealed the deal for instant replay. As a Lions fan it's nice to know you have company when it comes to getting hosed by the refs in a playoff game, but that play was super close so that wasn't as egregious as the refs picking up a PI flag because people wanted to see Dallas play Green Bay more than the Lions the following week.
But I digress. Staying on that same vein though, two memories of the Oilers stand out for me on a personal level. The first was Billy Sims climbing up the back of one Oiler defender and kicking another in the head on the way down. And they didn't even throw a flag! That was when football was a hard hitting game. Of course, being the Lions, they still lost the game to a really bad Oilers team in spite of Billy going off for more than 100 yards and he was so pissed he overturned the Gatorade table. Billy was cut out of the same cloth as Earl. That's why I prefer him over Barry Sanders.
My second most fond memory was the Oiler fan in the stands flipping the bird to the cameraman during a Monday night game. Again, as a Lions fan, I could absolutely relate to that move. I liked the Oilers of Old. Too bad they moved away to Tennessee. An original member of the AFL and they had a cool fight song too boot. RIP Oilers.

Not big on teams moving. Not that I have ever been an Oilers fan, but when a team moves it causes me to lose whatever interest I once had in the team. That’s the problem with teams being owned by a single owner. When the city owns the team such as the Green Bay Packers, those obnoxious moves don’t happen!!
Yeah exactly, I'm from the LA area and we lost both the Rams and Raiders in the mid 90's. I stopped following them at that point, and now that the Rams are back, I still won't follow them!

That's part of why I am a Packer fan (Been one most of my life). The team is owned by the fans and I think as a result the team means something more to the fans than most other teams.

Who remembers that wild-card game between the Houston Oilers and Oakland Raiders back in Dec 1980??? It just didn't matter who the Oilers quarterback was that day!!! The Oakland Raiders defense really cleaned up on Bum Phillips' crew!!! Bum Phillips was a cool dude! It's a crime shame that Bud Addams fired him!!!
I really feel, from an outsider's perspective, that this was the moment everything started to go wrong with the oilers when bud Adams fired bum Phillips.
Bum Phillips was given a raw deal after that game. By the same token trading for washed up Oakland Raiders blew up in their face.
It was very sad I used to live in Houston watching Earl Campbell, Kenny "the snake" Stabler, Billy "White Shoes" Johnson & Bum Phillips

The franchise history starts with the Oilers and ends with the Titans.

I lived in Jacksonville when Bud Adams wanted to move the Oilers, and boy the city was starving for a team after the Colts (the local;s called it "Colt Fever") and Jim Irsay wanted to move there, but they decided on Indianapolis,...but by dar when the Oilers said they wanted to relocate, the city was up in flames, hoping they would come to give other big in-state rivalries for the Buccaneers in Tampa and of course the Dolphins in Miami. So the Oilers went to Tennessee and Jacksonvulle got their (heh heh) Jaguars in 1895. I personally think that maybethe Titans should give their colors back to Houston, but let the Titan fans and league decide thatone. I'm a Seahawk fan and have been since 1983....lol

I'm a Steelers fan from my boyhood, but I'll sign my name to any petition that helps Houston reactivate the 'Oilers' name, they deserve it. A dedicated small team of lawyers could negotiate the 'Oilers' name out of legally inactive status, and a countrywide petition could convince the NFL Commissioner to recommend the name being re-used.....?

Just bought an Oilers hat the other day. It was my dads favorite team growing up. I’m from St.Louis, but he moved here with his mom in highschool from Houston where he met my mom. He moved back to Houston to get into the oil field when I was 9 years old. I’m 23 now and watching the rams leave was a heart breaker, with that being said; I enjoy being loyal to teams that I could potentially watch play and in 2 months I too will join the oil field as well. I’m wearing a Texans hat as we speak, and my favorite NBA team is the rockets until STL gets a team.
Funny thing about this video and reality is I went to the Christmas game a few years back to watch the Texans play the Steelers… there was way more Steelers fans at that game too 😂🤦🏼♂️ great fans though, met some really nice people.

I'm from Tennessee and attended every home game for the first 10 years as the Titans. No Titans fan counts the Oilers era as part of the Titans. We think of them as only the Titans.

I'm from TN & a Cowboys fan, but miss the Houston Oilers. If there were some way that they could come back as a new team in another NFL expansion, regardless of the Texans being around, I'd like the Houston Oilers to have a spot assuming the family would allow it, putting them in the NFC division.
That would be like LA & NY. LA has 2 teams the Rams & the Chargers, one team in ea conference. The same with NYC. I dont see where Houston couldnt support 2 teams, the Texans (AFC) & the Oilers (NFC).
Who knows, maybe in a day far, far away....there could be an Oilers/Texans SuperBowl (yeah, wishful thinking!!!!!)😅
Word on the street was that the only reason that Super Bowl VIII was played outdoors in Rice Stadium instead of the Astrodome was because none of the other NFL owners liked Bud Adams.
The Astrodome gets a bad rap. The sightlines for fans are great and the atmosphere was special.
I think the Houston Astros had control of the Astrodome during that time I don't think the Oilers had much of a say at the time it was one of the reasons they didn't like the Astrodome, they were a tennant and the Houston Astros were the landlord.
Houston Oilers are one of two teams to surrender a 35-3 lead in the 1992 AFC wildcard game against The Buffalo Bills.
I was a huge fan when I was 14 when my late stepdad took me to all the home games at the dome in 1991 and enjoyed them all. I remember crying my eyes out when they blew that 35-3 lead against Barfalo in 1992 and again the next season when they lost to the Chefs. And after that my time as an oilers fan was over when the debacle of moving the team began.
I guess that shows that no lead is safe as Yogi once said " It's not over until it's over " I remember the Oilers radio announcers yelling you can turn out the lights on the Bills now
Those uniforms are just so perfect.
Also those Houston Oilers uniforms were sharp with the powder blue Jerseys and white helmets. Hopefully the Titans bring that version of throwback unis back this season.
They plan to wear the late 1970s-1990s Oilers uniforms in 2022. I did love their 1960 blue helmets during the AFL 50th anniversary season.
Absolutely, the Oilers name and records belong to Houston. I wish the NFL would reconsider and return the Oilers name to the Houston franchise, the Texans need to be renamed the Oilers immediately! Please bring back Luv Ya Blue!!

The Original Texans are now the Kansas City Chiefs, it all could be worked out. I'm sure the Texans ownership would love to adapt the Oilers name.

And I am a Ravens and yes the Ravens used to be the Browns even though they were considered on paper an expansion team and coincidentally the Orioles were the St Louis Brown before moving to Baltimore. So by you logic the Ravens should be the Colts but they have no ties to that franchise.
I get what your saying, but certain names belong to certain cities. Unfortunately the NFL screwed relocation up, its great that they let the Browns move to Baltimore and leave the Browns name in Cleveland. The same should of been done with the Houston Oilers moving to Tennessee and definitely Baltimore Colts moving to Indy. Its only right.

I've thought this whole time out this year. Texans, Titans, and Roger Goodell get on a Zoom call, iron out the differences, then meet in New York. The Texans become the Oilers again, and the Texans replace the Roughnecks in the USFL/XFL. Then ALL that Texans logos and likenesses go onto Texan Wire Wheels, and other Lowrider Wire Wheels from that company. Next, put the Texans logo on the Texas Edition Chevy Silverados as well. The Houston Roughnecks are now owned by the Mcnairs, or any other Greater H Tycoon, and then the Roughnecks SPRINGBOARD the return of Arena Football as the Uncrowned, Principal, Franchise due to their affiliations. The last ambitious part of this, I'm going to leave out for now because THAT would take some honest Forward Thinking by the Texans/Oilers, City of Houston, and Harris County.

I am an Oiler and Titan fan. I grew up in Houston with the Oilers and left the city around the same time as the Oilers. I believe we need to keep the Oiler history with the Titans as part of the rivalry that now exists with the Texans. They got everything the Oilers wanted and now they want the legacy too? No Way!

I was 7 when the Oilers left. I didn’t understand any of the politics of it, I just knew that they took my football team away. To this day, I HATE the Titans & cannot STAND the fact that they kept the Oilers history. I feel like if you leave & change your name, you shouldn’t get to keep the history.
In a way I know how you feel, I'm from LA and both the Raiders and Rams left when I was little. I stopped following either team, and it's weird now that we have the Rams back and the Chargers as well.

I really enjoyed this video. I am in my mid 20s but my father was and is a diehard Oilers/Titans fan. I never knew much about the history of the Oilers. I am really split on if the Texans should get the Oilers history and likeness back. It is up to the fan to continue following the team of their choosing even if they relocate. I do think the city of Houston should have retained the rights to the Logo, Uniforms but the History such as retired numbers/records should go to the Titans.
I am also not saying the fans of Oilers owe Bud Adams any loyalty because he never really showed them any. What I am saying is I would not stop rooting for a team I loved for 15+ years (I am an AZ Cardinals fan for what it's worth, I know the pain of being so close but so far at the same time, dealt with a many heartbreaks and sketchy front office) all because they moved.
I feel like this is more similar to what the Colts went through. Where they retained the likeness (uniforms, logo's and history) while the fans in Baltimore disconnected from the team in Indianapolis altogether. Although when the Browns in the 90s left for Baltimore, they left all likeness and history behind.
I totally understand the feelings of Houston Oilers fans. Especially if you're a homer and take pride in the sport teams from your home state/town. It would not make sense to go root for a team in Nashville Tennessee.

I’m from Richmond Virginia. While watching football with my Dad who was a Colts fan. The Oilers were playing the Dolphins in 1979. The Oilers had a song That was played when they scored. I, as a 3 year old loved the song. I asked my Dad which team had that song. He said the Oilers. I was like that’s my team now, having been a Colts fan because of Pops. He laughed and said well if you pick a team you can never change it. I said ok. He bought me a Oilers Flag, I fell in love with Earl Campbell and I’ve been a fan every since. That Oilers Derrick is ours!!!! The Houston whatever they call themselves are fraudulent imposters!!! #Titanup

I can relate in a way, I grew up in the LA area during the 90’s when we lost both the Raiders and Rams at the same time. That was painful watching two teams leave.

Adams f***ed the city of Houston, in my opinion.. I would say, however, just like the city of Cleveland did, the city of Houston and the NFL should have forced Oiler ownership to leave their name and history in Houston, so when another team was awarded to Houston, the Oilers would be back in business, thus making Oiler fan happy and not completely "tooled in the tuckus"..

You sound a bit younger than me, so I wanted to tell you this. Since the internet was in its infancy and there was no social media, there was no way of knowing the color scheme or the look of the uniforms. It wasn't until I bought Madden 2000 that I knew what the team uniforms looked like.
Believe it or not I actually remember watching the Oilers play haha. But yeah Madden is a good source for discovering that kind of stuff!

I remember 2 things during this. The local stations violating their tv contracts and showing cowboys games instead as a middle finger and the rallies in Houston to tell the oilers to leave Houston as another middle finger. That is how much He pissed off the fans in Houston.

Interesting that the Tennessee Titans' new nickname is an old AFL nickname that was dropped. The New York Jets were originally the New York Titans.

Dallas had a brief fling with the NFL in 1952, also called the Texans, in Dallas. The team's performance, at 1-11, was forgettable, not that many in North Texas saw them anyway. In fact, the team, unable to attract local investors, was sold by its owners back to the NFL with five games remaining, and the "Dallas" Texans were a road team for the remainder of their meager existence. Due to tax laws, the franchise was officially folded, and a new expansion team, the second incarnation of the Baltimore Colts (not, as many erroneously assume, the AAFC team, quarterbacked for a few seasons by none other than YA Tittle, that played only one NFL season, 1950, then went under), replaced them, though many of the former Texan players signed with the new club. Hunt, being a local "oilman", was likely aware of the nature of getting support from the Dallas-Fort Worth community, so he obviously felt that HIS Texans would do better. It was his starting the AFL Texans in Dallas that prompted the NFL to expand to Dallas themselves, else the famed Cowboys as we know them may not have existed. Just as in baseball, where the proposed Continental League, a third major league made of cities and owners frustrated by lack of major league ball (and New York City had recently lost BOTH its NL teams to California in 1958) prompted expansion of MLB, so the NFL had to respond, hence why the Minnesota Vikings, and relocating the Cardinals from Chicago, who were faring poorly anyway. That just left one more team, and Hunt could not get support for his Texans with the Cowboys also in town, hence why he relocated to Kansas City. Like the Kansas City Athletics, the stay might not have been permanent, save that the KC politicians got the Harry S Truman Sports Complex, with its separate stadiums for baseball and football, a first, and also the Chiefs were in the first and the fourth Super Bowls, the latter being the last between separate AFL and NFL.

@@WDI2008 Yeah it's pretty much the usual story of how a team gets sold to an outside group who then "promises" to keep the team located in it's original city but then after struggling to build a new arena they then "shockingly" decide to move the team to the actual city they wanted to own a team in, in the first place.

Agreed, cities and tax payers shouldn't be on the hook for funding brand new stadiums and arenas. These teams are for the most part (other than the Packers) privately owned franchises that don't need public handouts. Billionaires should be able to raise funding from investors and other sponsors on their own.
