I too am a survivor...Michael's story is inspiring. Be brave if you're here because you've been diagnosis...I know it's why I found this. Be prepared to go to war...and kick Cancer's butt!

I enjoyed this an agree. My wife just finished treatment for squamous cell base of the tongue. She was stage 4 and still had no real throat symptoms. Swollen neck glands, that came and went, a ear ache that didn't respond to antibiotics, and then our GP who agreed to do a CT scan, even though he didn't expect anything. Being a dentist, long since retired (for medical reason of my own) I was initially devastated, recalling the radical surgery involved with this type of cancer 30 years ago. After calling an oral surgeon friend he assured me that things had taken a dramatic turn for the better. The 5 years survival rates 35 years ago where about 50%, now they are 92%. She had chemo and radiation without surgery. We spent 2 months at Johns Hopkins, and she was treated as an outpatient. The treatment was hell, and she just finished a week ago. I am grateful for the many patients that went before, and the doctors willing to try the less invasive radiation and chemo route. Without these brave souls my wife would have had a much worse time of it. Bless you brave souls.

I remember watching some interview, when I heard about Douglas' illness. How up front he was. How frank, and honest. Even able to joke. I admired him back then, for what must have been a frightening time, as he settled down and began the course of treatment that, ultimately saved him. Wishing him the very best of health. May he live long as his Dad...

Not great but seems I have something in common with a film legend...
I'm 3 months out of chemoradiation treatment for a P16 HPV caused tongue cancer that was also misdiagnosed over a 15 month period before I found the right ENT specialist to identify I didn't just have tonsillitis but cancer. Well done for taking on the role of head and neck cancer ambassador and supporting the medical community.

@@KitCalder Thank you for your kind concern. 33 radiation and 8 rounds of chemo later and I'm cancer free. Lost 47 lbs and hearing and taste for a couple of years but things are improving. I took a chance and moved to Houston near MD Anderson Cancer Center and believe they helped save my life,(along with my caregiver) Every day above ground is a gift.

Michael could have been FAR MORE SPECIFIC about what he ATE. How he got through it EXACTLY. And the treatments stages and what they did. The MASK on his face during RADIATION as I didn't handle that well AT ALL. I needed ATAVAN for claustrophobia. I was scared to death and yes, I am a US Army veteran, 9th Infantry Div. Sergeant and was known as a 'bad ass'. I was not afraid of death at age 20. At age 47-55 now THAT IS A DIFFERENT STORY. You change. You are closer to death anyway and now add Stage 4 Cancer and FUK!!! OMG. Ensure and Boost saved my life and kept a tube out of my stomach. As that causes MORE PROBLEMS and can last a lifetime of grief. No details here from me. I ate just enough. Lost 52 pounds anyway but, I was a Big guy before this and MICHAEL DOUGLAS was not. he was skinny and couldn't risk losing lots of weight. he lost over 40 pounds. He missed that tube luckily. Bless you all. Bless you Michael. Get checked people if you have swelling in neck.

Doctors in America get kickbacks if they order less testing. Many drs are leaving big hospital institutions so they can be more free to practice medicine.

I can't understand how cancer can be misdiagnosed in people like Mike D who a., have a lot of $, and b., have a past history of risk factors. I had a rare blood disease that I had a stem cell transplant for a few yrs ago, and the HMO specialist figured it out pretty quickly. With that, everyone that goes to the specialty clinic where I go gets the same high level of care, same doctors, same hosp for inpatient treatments, etc etc.

Michael, you say you had a soreness behind your last molar. What was the delay before you had a hoarse voice?
You claim you were misdiagnosed 3x. However, you didn't blame your GP, who should have referred you to a dental professional, or your ENT or periodontist, who should have had a specific follow-up for you, like if it doesn't heal in two weeks, let's biopsy. I was touched about how you don't blame the docs and their lack of education, but the lack of the experts in the field passing on the knowledge to colleagues. Organizations like IFHNOS make that transfer happen. Keep up the great work IFHNOS!

Well, it seems like he doesn't tell the truth and dramatizes his condition. I had the same cancer 4 weeks before Michael. My PA called for an MRI immediately because my DR. was on vacation. Signs of cancer so I had a PET scan which confirmed cancer of my tongue. Stage 4. 6 years I have been clean and now I again have cancer in my throat just above my collar bone. Here I go again.
