2:00 - That's me and my fiancee walking down the stairs on our first trip to New York City together. This store was absolutely one of my highlights of the trip and I remember seeing you playing, thinking "I recognise her from somewhere".
Tom Riley you’re famous now
lol
😁
Wait! Is this THE Tome Riley?!
@@thepick5663 that’s me hahaha
I was a 22 years young man visiting New York with my brother. On september 26th 1980, we came in the 48th street to buy guitars, visiting the big shops Sam Ash, Manny's, We buy guitars, ... And suddenly, we discovered this tiny little shop, with a few guitars and amps: Rudy's guitar shop. Rudy's welcoming was so warm that we bought everything we needed there: one Les Paul custom (wine red), two Ovation Electric Legend (ref 1617) that aged so well, and one heavy Fender valve amp. We took back all this stuff back to Paris by plane: how heavy.
Fifteen years later, I came back to Rudy's place. He recognized me immediately, welcoming me by my first name. He had took over the whole building. That was a big shop now. I bought him a grey Parker Fly deluxe, Rocktron Voodoo valve, Rivera TBR3, Anvil 10, Centaur PA50 and BLB sound AC212. This time, I sent everything by boat. Too heavy.
I discovered the amazing Pensa-Suhr guitars in a special display screen. He told me he was making them, and that Pensa was his family name. Rudy is so nice that you immediately want to make friend with him.
I hope we'll meet again. There's a long time I didn't crossed the Atlantic to NYC.
If you read this one day, Rudy, I wish you all the best for you and your family.
Dominique Farese.
great old times on 48th street... My friends and I always shopped at Manny's and We Buy Guitars where I picked up a 1970 Les Paul Custom Black Beauty and case for only $450. it was 1977...!
Damn u must be loaded
Probably the best thing about your videos is the absolute, unbridled enthusiasm for what you do, and the obvious joy it brings you. I know personally, finding a guitar that speaks to me is like, the best Christmas, ever.
I was going to say something similar. I love the 'kid in a candy store' giddiness she has.
I think it's time all guitarists admitted that they have a little practise before they go to a guitar shop.
Then after you played the bits you practised, you're lost and just play half a pentatonic blues riff and put the guitar down.If everyone knew this, it wouldn't be as intimidating for people.
So true! lol
Mary, what a surprise this was! As a New Yorker and friend of Rudy's, it is one fabulous guitar shop. I have been buying stuff from Rudy's for years and they are the nicest people imaginable. I am so glad you made it there. Also a shoutout to his new location in Scarsdale, NY!!
Right in Westchester? On my way...
They treat everyone like royalty in Rudy's! I've been in a few times and it doesn't feel like the usual guitar shop BS goes on in there at all. Robert also told me a great story about a customer who was in the day before me looking for an SG... Robert couldn't believe the customer had "ones he liked more at home"... it was Angus Young and Robert didn't recognise him!! He was laughing like mad when he told me :)
So true! We went in for a banjolele, and were treated like we were spending thousands of dollars and were already regulars to the store.
I find GC irritating..
@@II__DAVE__II that's just weird
Holy Crap......that's freakin hilarious!!!!
I used to drop in at Rudy’s when they were on 48th St. They were incredibly friendly and helpful every time
Rudy's is probably my favorite guitar store of all time. I'm so lucky to live in NYC and be able to visit it relatively frequently!!
There are a hand full of people i'd like to meet in person.
One is definitely Mary Spender.
3:36 cold shivers, and you're performing in a music store!! Your talent AND uniqueness doesn't seem to have any limits.
When I strum in music stores all of my ideas are gone...
It's like when you argue with someone...it's just after that you realize all of the right things you could have said!!
Hope this makes sense.
Tony Samperi YES THIS MAKES SENSE!!! THIS IS ME HAHAHAH
@@hanzv5867 ehehehe I'm glad I'm not alone 😉
Like when u enter a grocery store w\o a list..
@@Pwrcritter yeah. The exact moment after you pay you say "Damn! I was here to buy some salt"
I was in NYC last year and being a Mark Knopfler fan I visited Rudy's to oogle at their Pensa's. I fell in love with a strat they had and I ended up buying it. On the last day of my stay, after playing in my hotelroom for a few days I decided to go in early morning to see if it would be possible to have it set up before my flight late afternoon. The store was closed because of a private exposition but the employer recognised me trough the window, let me in and quickly did a set up (free of charge).
Stunning guitars, beautiful shop and amazing customer service. If you are a guitar player and visiting NYC this place is a must-see.
What wonderful acoustics inside the building. That and the ambiance add to your wonderful playing. Thanks for sharing!!
Love your vlogs they just so informative and no frills just the real deal. Thank you always.
Great vlog, Mary, thank you! I stumbled across Rudy's a couple weeks ago, and I love it there. It's around the corner from my company's New York City office, and when I was visiting there I took a walk after work before heading to the hotel. I had to go in. I'm an advanced beginner (my best guess as to what level I play) and I've always been too shy to play in a guitar store because I can pretty well count on everyone in the shop playing way better than me. Well, Rudy's got me over that. A guy named Nate helped me out, kept me totally at ease, never once made me feel the slightest bit embarrassed about my lack of experience and skill, just great. Changed the way I approach guitar stores.
Man, I used to go to Rudy's when they were still on 48th street and were the exclusive Pensa-Suhr dealers. Yeah, I'm old, LOL.
Wow Mary you are nearly at 100K.. I have been lurking your channel since 14k.. your growth has just tickled me pink. Congratulations!
Great video and congratulations on 100k subs!
Such a genuine love of what you do, and a certainty of what "works" for you (not to mention good taste in guitars!). I continue to be impressed as much offstage as on. Crushing badly over here! :)
The song on 3:27 is very John Mayer-esque. Stop this train. Wonderful! And lovely guitar shop. Must visit next time I'm in NY.
Over 400,000 subs now. Congratulations and Happy new year 🎊!
"I saw you in Rudy's, you were very high" Steely Dan, Black Cow. Purchased a Deluxe Strat from them in 2006 on 48th St and this last winter a Comins Semi Hollow.... :)
Hi Mary, I live in australia your uploads come through in the mornings so I make sure I find time before work to watch there's something about you that makes me smile and be happy.. So thanks for that..
Great episode. Nice guitars, fantastic singing and playing!!
really enjoyed this vid. Great relaxed feel to it. Love you playing and voice
So true about Rudy's. I was in there the same year as you and Rob treated me so well. Fantastic people. Awesome guitars. Great asset to NYC!
I visited this store in November 2018 and Rob was exceptional in his attention and service and I look forward to going back
Always enjoy and learn from both Adam and yourself. Thanks for sharing your very cool video it was nearly has been with you.
I visited their Scarsdale shop in November and Rudy spent an hour with me and my brother (who lives close to the shop) - was so cool I went back a few days later and bought a vintage Coronado. Stephanie and Rudy were awesome - they even swapped cases with another one because Rudy felt it was nicer , shipped it to my home - I highly recommend the store.
Hi Mary, I love your enthousiasm, your generosity and your attitude in life. It's very good to see your video on a monday morning when I just have a really busy and exhausting weekend and I need peace and calm... Thanks. :-)
Wonderful in every way! Thanks for this.
Just left this store - thought of you when I was there. Such a great vibe!
Great vid Mary! Thank you!
Wow Mary you are so passionate and kind and your playing is wonderful :)
Very nice singing and playing that acoustic!
Listening to you two noodle on the guitar and bass almost put me to sleep (and that's a good thing). Very relaxing. Thanks for taking us along!
Cool video .. I love going to guitar stores on the weekend and browsing around ..
I go in there Everytime I'm in NYC. It's a GREAT shop! The best customer service bar none. I was in there once and there was a guy looking and he would play. You could tell he hasn't been playing long and he said he was just looking, but they treated him like a star. Like I said, GREAT shop. It's what I remember as a kid going into a music store back in the early 70's. NO snobbish BS!!!!
Love your smile (and your playing/singing, cirtainly!)
so close too 100K Wooooo! well deserved! love the vids.
The fretless electric bass sounds awesomely like an upright / double bass!
CONGRATS 100K!!!
Great story about hanging with Rudy and then at NAMM!! Very genuine and cool people. I just passed by the shop this Saturday after not having been in it in a very long time. Amazing and unique guitars one doesn’t see often. 😊
Next time you're there Mary, shoot some stuff at the top of the stairs. That's where Rudy keeps his super-prized collection. They're all behind glass but unbelievably fabulous and rare guitars. It's a magic guitar store, for sure.
Thank you Mary! I went to NY city one time, i was in the Army, i visited the year before 911 happened. One day im gonna go back and when i do im gonna visit this little shop, thank you for sharing!
Oh, and you are Beautiful as always, thanks!
Love, love, love your style of playing with your thumb hitting (slapping?) that bass line. Really wish I could learn to play that way. I've always been just a straight strummer usually with a pick, which is fine in a band situation, but your style seems so much more satisfying especially when playing alone. Much more depth and a sense of the backbeat and swing.
Wonderful singing again Mary. Big fan!
Awesome vid xx
oh Mary, your voice is just so pure.
Great singing! The 000 18 sounds good with your voice.
amazing guitar shop and amazing guitars thanks for posting
Got goosebumps when you started singing. What an incredible moment that would be to be there. Very cool shop. I wonder if you bought anything.
Wonderful Mary.
I cannot decide, what I love more, your incredible voice (it really doesn’t need more than a voice and an acoustic) or how cute you and Adam are! ;)
Mary you are great!!
Hi Mary, in my life I have been three times in New York and visited Rudy‘s shop on every visit. The quality of that instruments, the way he presented it and his very friendly and kind way dealing with customers is outstanding. Really an iconic store to my mind. Thanks for reminding me to visit his shop again 😊
nice playing mary
Seeing a new upload from you always brightens my day. :)
great vid, thanks !!
Oh my god. I'm usually not a Martin fan, but that first one sounded amazing.
Ive never heard someone say theyre not a martin fan lol
That song you played on the 0018 is the best I've ever seen you. Beautiful beautiful singing. Pure perfection. That is YOU. Wow.
(And the acoustic you played afterwards... I hope you bought it!!!)
Wow! Guitar Heaven! Definitely one to visit. Love the content!
Bought a guitar from there 2 years ago, Gordon is a lovely bloke
Oh shit you got to 100k subs! Congrats Mary, well done! 💯
That 1st Martin blends perfectly with your voice... nice song... very 70's-ish. Nice.
403 k subs?!?! That is cool, congratulations!!
Beautiful looking guitar shop. Definitely going to visit.
You are magic. Don't stop doing what you are doing.
Mary is lovely !
Cool video, cool store and even before I heard your nice singing voice I immediately thought you are just a lovely, polite , intelligent young lady . Very enjoyable to watch .Good luck in what ever you do ..Thank you
You really captured the uniqueness of Rudy's... It is now on my bucket list of guitar stores to visit! Cheers!
That's an awesome shop.. I need one near to my home. Hope you got the 335, it sounded really good in your hands. and you know, you always need "one more guitar"
We stopped into Rudy's when we visited for my wife's birthday, mainly because they carried the banjolele she wanted. We had no idea the history, friendliness, and professional treatment we received. Love seeing your vlogs from Rudy's again and again!
What a great guitar store and what a great story ! Cheers !
I really enjoyed the tour of a very classy guitar store. I'd love to see what Strats they offer.
Hi Really like what you do and I so miss Mannys in New York , in my earlier years I visited the store a number of times , but Rudys is a great store also .....keep up the good work from a fellow UK/US living guitar geek
Mary, when you and Leo did "sultans of swing" I became a fan. Stellar girl!
Love you vocals. Very nice!!!
wow that was a beautiful song you played i loved that
I wandered into Rudy's on a trip from California. After Mark Knopfler's video about guitars which included his trip to Rudy's and conversations about owning Pensa guitars, I had to come. Like Mary, I had such a warm experience. If you play guitar, this is a trip to Mecca. Thanks, Mary, for sharing the magic on Broome Street.
That was a beautiful song that you did
That 335 you were playing is a beat, and hope you made your way back to that one, such nice tone, and looked like it had that playability factor that is so important in choosing one.
You ar good at music. That shop looks awesome.
In Guitar Stories, Mark Knopfler called Rudy's the most beautiful guitar store in the world. I always enjoy going there when I'm in NYC.
that place looks awesome. tons of good guitars, pedals, ...
I've never been to NYC, and its stuff like this that makes me realize what I've missed.
That's crazy, i love that place. When ever I visit new york I go there
Damnnnnn congrats to 100k didn’t even notice it...when I subbed u had only 15k 👏👏👏👏
0:52 "I've got a special guest joining me in about an hour so stay tuned!"
Mary, I don't have an hour. I've got things to do.
Rudy is great...I had a chance to chat with him several times at his smaller location up in Scarsdale, NY. Always very engaging.
very awesome! I want everything
Hi Mary. What a place hey? I got to do a pilgrimage when I was over there last year. Mind blowing!🤘🤘
Nice Video🎥🎸🎵
I used to go to 48 street 70's ans 80's , just to look in the windows , Rudy's was one of my faves as well , it was much smaller than the new digs are . Thanx for the view
I remember Rudys original location on 48th st. John Suhr was the repair guy.
Evan Ward oh I was just saying that. Yep the whole street had guitar stores. Yep Pensa/Suhr guitars.
Suhr took all that knowledge ,fixed everything that nixed the Strat and built a little empire for himself.
Joseph Calabrese true he does a great job. But Brian Moore guitars had the same super strats before Suhr. Look exactly alike but Moore’s are thinner, curved for comfort and beautiful tops. Duncan puck ups. Piezo in the bridge and some can connect to usb and synth plus coil tapping. They stopped selling in stores and went direct. So nobody knows them now but hardcore followers. And their usb thing was stolen by a Japanese company I believe. They had to fight to get their patent back. I don’t use that anyway.
I may be obsessed but Christ Mary, Primrose! I love this song more than you know.
Back in the old days I used to go to the local music stores to meet people to jam with. Played with a lot of musicians like that. Met some cool pros too!
I am happy for my Martin D16GT. Love it!!
Years ago some jerk in a guitar center was copying everything I played. Soooo I learned Scuttle Buttin note for note. Never happened again =).
Been here on my last trip in New-York. Beautiful shop for sure.
