I feel bad for you Mary coz when you are star struck and get to say or ask something to a personal hero, it’s so easy to say something the wrong way. Poor you had an audience of high profile musical people behind and Paul in front of you and the whole internet watching. Well done for not letting this moment crush you the way it would have so many people. Your vulnerability is one of your beautiful strengths.

Your Mayer question was just right! If a question brings an answer that contributes and people is interested, the question was worthwhile. This is clearly the case here. Even if you don't like the way you formulated the question, the outcome was really good. Good job

Never knew who it was...…..now I do and you have pulled in another subscriber for sure. I've begun back watching all your videos. Your commentary is utterly infectious. Love how you are so brutally honest and straightforward with everything. You've got it all...…..looks, brains, voice and such a melodic guitar player. Mary, I am a big fan, and I am also 65 with fading memory. I was at work talking with a fellow worker and the subject led to me talking about this new person I had been following, but I could not remember your name. He blurted our sounds like Mary Spender. That blew my mind. You have an impact way beyond what you think.

Your reaction of disappointment to Mayer and Paul's fumbling answer to your question was priceless. They were completely caught off guard. Nancy Wilson, Orianthi, Bonnie Raitt, Sheryl Crow etc etc are the answer to you question in my opinion. They've mastered the instrument in their own ways and have a ton of charisma and stage presence. Mayer has done the same so it's not different for male or female players I don't think.

Wow. I'm browsing through your channel and run into this, and I so happen to have seen this press conference in another video, without the influence of all the preamble you give here, and two things should be said:
    1) the first time I saw it, I thought it was a cool moment
    2) all you say you have gone through after this got out, and the analysis you make of this, comes from not being a guy. A guy pops that question up and PRS and John would have gone "dude, keep playing, rock on" and it would all have been over.

There are so many female guitar players out there now which is a wonderful thing. The girls have all the same passion and joy in learning and creating music as the guys have and yet again the music breaks down all the barriers and connects everyone. Music is a universal language that everyone feels and everyone can participate in where we all can experience this joy. To me that's all that matters.

The wording of your question made me feel the same way as John. I was like "Oh shit, guitars have been designed with MALE guitarists in mind. Damn, we should release ergonomic guitars for the female body shape. Women tend to have shorter appendages and a wider frame." Ya, so, don't blame John for trying to make females feel welcome in the guitar community. Every male guitarist would love a female guitarist girlfriend.

I'm a bassplayer and I'm often looking at my bass thinking "this should have a different shape" - I recently stumbled onto the Strandberg Boden. Even if you had made another question you would still find a flaw...the nerves were speaking. One day when you two meet you are going to laugh a lot! Xx

I tell my grandson all the time to fall in love with a woman's character, not her looks or performance. Mary, you have character. You have the other two also, but your character is what shines above all.

You need to track down John Mayer's publicist. They are much easier to contact and handle things like setting up interviews. They are all just people... I would think they would be open to an interview you are very well composed and interesting. The publicity will be good for both of you. Don't underestimate your abilities. Go for it! I can probably find the right contact info but, don't really want to put it up in such a public forum.

The beauty of this video and John Mayer is "kids" all make "mistakes." Not that either is a kid or the question was a mistake. Yet aren't all guitarists kids? And don't we all make mistakes? The humanity of the interaction and its evolution gives us all hope in an increasingly toxic world. Like Tomo says, Don't worry, don't compare, don't expect too fast, and be kind to yourself.

Very very honest. Know the feeling when a question doesn`t come out the way you want. 😊 You`re soooo good. Shit happen`s 😂

Don't worry Mary. We all sometimes have difficulty fully getting out out thoughts, especially when on the spot. You have a good point about the challenges of being a woman guitar player. I can count on two hands how many women guitarists I can name, but every time I see one that is good, I take notice and it warms my heart. I have a daughter who is quite a musician and I would like her to start playing guitar. I can't think of a better role model than Mary Spender. Keep up the good work. Your are inspiring a lot of people.
