    Life too short for long CZcams videos? Please see the ‘Interesting bits and go-to sections’ information below.
    Well this is a bit different! We attended Thomann Gear University during May 2018 and bumped into a lot of friends old and new. One of our dear chums is Mary Spender - find her on CZcams here / maryspender - and among her many talents is her wonderful singing. So Dan and I decided to take a TPS-sized wrecking ball to that and ask her to sing with us!
    What follows is more or less exactly as it happened, in the spirit of trying to get you to sing. Even if you’ve been telling yourself you can’t, you can.
    Singing is great for the soul and it’ll make your life better, especially when you do it with other people. Sure, you absolutely will feel silly at first and you might not exactly be Aretha Franklin in the pipes department, but put some time into it and you’ll be amazed what you can achieve. If nothing else, it will really help your guitar playing too.
    Now, importantly, this is purely designed to whet your singing whistle. We'd highly recommend hitting up a specialist site or channel if you're getting into singing for the first time - there are lots out there!
    So as we say, slightly off the beaten track for us, but, erm, we were in Germany. And some other things. There is much more to come from our time at TGU over coming weeks.
    MASSIVE thanks to the good people of Thomann who put this whole event on. And of course to Mary for being a good sport. Check out the various #TGU18 hashtags on social media and Thomann’s own CZcams channel for much more stuff.
    Enjoy the episode!

    @thatpedalshow @maryspender I showed it to my 4.5-year-old daughter and she asks for it all the time..."dada can we watch the harmony video?" Tonight we recruited mom a sang a triad together. The look on her face when she "heard" it was priceless. Thank you for all you do!

    I've done this quite a few times in my life: playing Pop or Rock songs with only acoustic instruments and harmony vocals.
    The human voice has a magic going on that does not only make it a joy to listen, but much more brings pure happiness and joy to the singers. Even more so when you sing harmonies with good friends. And if you're not friends yet you will be after you sang together. :)

      Agree 100000 per cent. If such a number exists, and I think it does because singing together is more than the sum of its parts. It’s real, it’s visceral and it’s moving, even when you’re not exactly Marvin Gaye. Ahem. Mick here. :0)

    • @ThatPedalShow
      @ThatPedalShow  Před 6 lety

      Hooray! Truth is, most bands just gloss over it because a) the vocals are often not treated with the same importance as the individual instruments and b) nobody wants to look silly. It’s really embarrassing when you get it wrong. But when you get it even half-right.... chills! I’d always recommend - Mick here - an hour at every rehearsal just for singing, no instruments. Wish I’d had the discipline to do that over the years. :0)

    I've watched this video a while back and I had to come back and say that Dan's words on him getting gigs not due to his guitar playing but due to his singing got me picking up a mic in my current band (which is great for me, not so much for those hearing me :-D ).

  • @grahamcooper2144
    @grahamcooper2144 Před 6 lety

    That was great - I've tried so often to sing along as I strum and either my voice or my fingers break loose from the song and it all winds up in a heap on the floor - drenched in my tears (of laughter at myself). I have NO idea how people can sing and play simultaneously. Not a clue how it's done. Kudos to all three of you managing not only that but harmonies as well. Respect. Also: Yeah... Mary's singing voice. Wow!

    • @ThatPedalShow
      @ThatPedalShow  Před 6 lety

      One of them has to become almost muscle memory. And bizarrely some of things that you think might be simple - for example just strumming fours and singing - can actually be super difficult because it doesn’t make ‘sense’ with the melody or rhythm of the singing. Nevertheless, start simple, nail the guitar part, nail the singing and then slowly bring them together. Just one line to begin with. You’ll get there’

    • @grahamcooper2144
      @grahamcooper2144 Před 6 lety

      Oh wow.... Thanks for taking the time and effort to reply. Wasn't expecting that.
      I know *exactly* what you mean about it sometimes doesn't make seem to make overall sense as I'm practicing. But I'll persevere - after all I remember the early days of picking up a guitar and never imagining I could ever play a campfire C-chord cleanly. But, like everything else - it's all about practice and getting that muscle memory - whether chord grips or singing I guess. Again, thanks for bothering to read and reply.

      Thank you! It’s nice to get a few positive comments to kick us off. We weren’t sure how people would take this one. Thanks for watching, and for being nice!

      That Pedal Show No problem! I would love to hear bass more often in all your videos. A 60's P Bass and a 60's SG Junior, I would loop that demo video.

      I love doing it. Mick here. Never been great at it but it doesn’t matter. A few friends, little bit of effort - happy times! Thanks for watching!
