Life too short for long CZcams videos? Please see the ‘Interesting bits and go-to sections’ information below.
Well this is a bit different! We attended Thomann Gear University during May 2018 and bumped into a lot of friends old and new. One of our dear chums is Mary Spender - find her on CZcams here / maryspender - and among her many talents is her wonderful singing. So Dan and I decided to take a TPS-sized wrecking ball to that and ask her to sing with us!
What follows is more or less exactly as it happened, in the spirit of trying to get you to sing. Even if you’ve been telling yourself you can’t, you can.
Singing is great for the soul and it’ll make your life better, especially when you do it with other people. Sure, you absolutely will feel silly at first and you might not exactly be Aretha Franklin in the pipes department, but put some time into it and you’ll be amazed what you can achieve. If nothing else, it will really help your guitar playing too.
Now, importantly, this is purely designed to whet your singing whistle. We'd highly recommend hitting up a specialist site or channel if you're getting into singing for the first time - there are lots out there!
So as we say, slightly off the beaten track for us, but, erm, we were in Germany. And some other things. There is much more to come from our time at TGU over coming weeks.
MASSIVE thanks to the good people of Thomann who put this whole event on. And of course to Mary for being a good sport. Check out the various #TGU18 hashtags on social media and Thomann’s own CZcams channel for much more stuff.
Enjoy the episode!
Pedals in this episode…
There are no pedals in this episode, but there are acoustic guitars and an teeny-tiny acoustic bass…
• Gibson J-45 Vintage 2018
• Martin D-18
• Ortega Lizzy Bass. We think. Going into the Morgan, possibly.

@thatpedalshow @maryspender I showed it to my 4.5-year-old daughter and she asks for it all the time..."dada can we watch the harmony video?" Tonight we recruited mom a sang a triad together. The look on her face when she "heard" it was priceless. Thank you for all you do!
Ah man, that’s wonderful. I sang harmony with my 13 yr old daughter last night, it’s the best thing. Please tell your daughter that the bald guy in the vid says she’s awesome and to keep singing with her dad :)
I love you guys so friggin much.
Ah man. You’ll make us tear up. Can’t wait to see you soon Joey!
Your episode remains #1, Joey.
Now we really need an acoustic version of whiskey
Feels so good seeing 3 people in a small room enjoying guitar playing and singing together. I'm looking forward to do this also again one day. Thank you for those great 30 minutes!
This is one of the best episode of that pedal show, and it's sans pedals. What a massive treat you guys are...
"We're going to make ourselves look silly so that you can feel more confident... . " Instantly summons the voices of angels... . . .
That's it we need a TPS album. 'All you need is fuzz' title track. Erm.....Daydream Tubescreamer, ..It's so funny (how we don't talkbox any more)....Don't look back in flanger....
Oooohhhhh!!! You win the internet today! All A Klon The Watchtower? /0)
That Pedal Show Just got Delayed by ZVex Top?
Yes yes yes!
Don’t look back in flanger. That had me. Doffs cap.
That Pedal Show Mudhoney for Nothing?
The most amazing thing about this channel is that despite whole equipment, boutique stuff etc. it shows that all that matters is that music is the biggest joy you can buy to yourself !!! I love you guys
Thank you Jakub. Ultimately that’s what it’s all about. :0)
That was brilliant.
Love the honesty in the vid. I could watch you guys jam and chat for hours. Thanks folks.
I'm satisfied watching this, even though there's no pedals involved LOL
Hahahha! Excellent!
This is awesome! Been getting more and more into harmonies the last year, and I`m 39 and have been singing my whole life. Thank you!
One of the best things in music is playing and singing with other human beings. What a lovely, open, honest and necessary episode! Well done!
Can't praise this highly enough. Brave, interesting and impressive - all the things youtube content can be when its done well. Bravo all round.
Thank you Jacob. So glad people are getting it! We were bracing ourselves for a little negativity, but now it doesn’t matter that a few people have connected with what we were trying to achieve. Thank you for the kind words, and of course for watching!
The three of you are like magic, I swear.
That's the way to do it. No one's ever explained it so simply. Thankyouthankyouthankyou
Awesome! This one seems to have gone down well. So naturally we will do more!
I've done this quite a few times in my life: playing Pop or Rock songs with only acoustic instruments and harmony vocals.
The human voice has a magic going on that does not only make it a joy to listen, but much more brings pure happiness and joy to the singers. Even more so when you sing harmonies with good friends. And if you're not friends yet you will be after you sang together. :)
Agree 100000 per cent. If such a number exists, and I think it does because singing together is more than the sum of its parts. It’s real, it’s visceral and it’s moving, even when you’re not exactly Marvin Gaye. Ahem. Mick here. :0)
Truely fantastic! So inspirational... and a brave move to show the processes we all fear/avoid. Big thumbs up for taking TPS into new territory.
Cheers Ian. Loads of people seem to have enjoyed this. So let’s do more of it! Thanks for watching!
This was a constantly smiling episode. Always great to see/hear the lovely Mary too.
Love harmonies man! Beautiful! Really cool trio actually! Would happily sit and listen to you at a gig \m/
Karl Golden where Bobby goes fire follows
Wow I never mick's voice was so good!!!
Suhail Couto And at nite after pizza n wine he turns n2 a crimefighting super hero, but cant tell ya which 1.
Every time I watch, I learn. Thank you all for a truly gutsy lesson about learning to relax and just sing: a lesson I seem impelled to learn anew each time that SM58 stares me down at band practice:) Ain’t music grand?
So good of you guys to do this.....human.
So very human
finally - another sing, sing video.....luv it !!!!.... I got no voice right now...grinding dust cough from 6 weeks at hotrod shop- so glad i went from a squeek to a few words.....get'n better evry day...
Oh my gosh, how come I’ve never seen this one before?! Lovely to see you three having fun together. 💙
Very educational and sounded fantastic for being spur of the moment.
Well done everyone. This is exactly what it is like if you sit down with a singer songwriter and figure out how the harmony vocals will work. Awesome demonstration of how it works in practice.
What a brilliant idea for a video - amazing
I am SO about this. A good vocal harmony is the most satisfying thing. Also you picked two songs that I love.
The new space is gonna be rocking if y'all keep these jams going
That’s the plan :)
Albeit not every show. Getting more than one musician in one place at the same time and getting anything at all done in terms of productivity is a logistical feat that we haven’t yet perfected. ;0) Mick here.
Best one yet
What a treat! Love seeing Mary on the show! Thanks for thinking outside the box on this one guys… Keep up the great work!!!
OUR LOVE, WOOOOO, that was angelic!!
That was great! Best thing my band Pecked ever did was have two women join us who can really sing. Has made such a difference and our harmony work now gives me goosebumps.
A great episode! Thanks!
As Dan says in the Joey videos “it’s soooo good, it’s soooo gooood”. Beautiful beautiful job i love you
I’d pay big money to see you guys perform no joke
Always wanted to sing in bands but never had the confidence. This is fantastic video for me. Thank you
Please give it a go and don’t give up straight away. You always start off sounding like it will never work. But just a couple of super simple harmonies with a friend and you’ll become addicted! We wish you luck!
Joey would be proud of you guys!! Fantastic job!
Beautiful guys, I'd pay to watch that live performance !
This gave me goosebumps , this NEEDS to happen as a band/ occasional gigging band.
I've been playing in bands for 26 years and I always learn something new on TPS. Thanks for laying it out for us. I feel like I understand vocal harmonies much better now.
Hooray! Truth is, most bands just gloss over it because a) the vocals are often not treated with the same importance as the individual instruments and b) nobody wants to look silly. It’s really embarrassing when you get it wrong. But when you get it even half-right.... chills! I’d always recommend - Mick here - an hour at every rehearsal just for singing, no instruments. Wish I’d had the discipline to do that over the years. :0)
Well that was amazing
Love This Episode !! "Shows to go ya" that the show is the guys and the chemistry between them and their guests........any and all subjects of making music are wonderfully presented !! Thank you !!
WoW! Had my first singing lesson today before I knew this video was out. Partly inspired by a comment Dan made when asked the single thing you can do to improve your guitar playing is learn to sing. Inspirational guys.
Awesome. Your teacher would probably be critical of the way we’ve done this. Listen to them! Good luck!
Loved this ! . Thanks
This needs to be a regular thing. This was fantastic!
Sweeeet!
Great harmonies here--Mick's Got Talent ! It's great to be a virtuoso at an instrument, but when you can add the true human touch to a performance, you are now at the zenith of being an artist. This video shows that it's as easy as practice.
Mick's voice is great. Please make an album together.
I learned more in this episode than I have in years of guitar lessons.
YES! nice one Dave, and thanks for watching!
I've watched this video a while back and I had to come back and say that Dan's words on him getting gigs not due to his guitar playing but due to his singing got me picking up a mic in my current band (which is great for me, not so much for those hearing me :-D ).
You get in there, that’s fantastic!
That was great - I've tried so often to sing along as I strum and either my voice or my fingers break loose from the song and it all winds up in a heap on the floor - drenched in my tears (of laughter at myself). I have NO idea how people can sing and play simultaneously. Not a clue how it's done. Kudos to all three of you managing not only that but harmonies as well. Respect. Also: Yeah... Mary's singing voice. Wow!
One of them has to become almost muscle memory. And bizarrely some of things that you think might be simple - for example just strumming fours and singing - can actually be super difficult because it doesn’t make ‘sense’ with the melody or rhythm of the singing. Nevertheless, start simple, nail the guitar part, nail the singing and then slowly bring them together. Just one line to begin with. You’ll get there’
Oh wow.... Thanks for taking the time and effort to reply. Wasn't expecting that.
I know *exactly* what you mean about it sometimes doesn't make seem to make overall sense as I'm practicing. But I'll persevere - after all I remember the early days of picking up a guitar and never imagining I could ever play a campfire C-chord cleanly. But, like everything else - it's all about practice and getting that muscle memory - whether chord grips or singing I guess. Again, thanks for bothering to read and reply.
Oh man. Mary is unbelievable if she can make you two sound good!!! Just joshin... you guys sounded great and it was very helpful as well.
Hahaha!!!!
That was great! I remember years ago struggling with the “middle harmony” and the drummer yelled at me said “there’s no middle harmony, we’re singing a chord”!!! THE DRUMMER.
See now that is the kind of once-in-a-blue-moon clarity that we could all do with. What a legend!
That was just lovely. This is 1 of my favourite videos of all time! Well done 🤘🏾
This is wonderful, and unexpected! Shows that sometimes just bravely and cheerfully going back to the basics is really refreshing and useful. Thanks guys and Mary.
Hey! Thank you so much for that video! I’ve searched CZcams for a video like this for years... singing live and doing harmonies like these is something I’ve desperately wanted to do for so long... thanks again
Cheers Dean! Seems like this one has gone down really well... so obviously we’ll do more. Cheers!
I could listen to this three doing this for hours.
Hey Guys, Mick "Gone" sounded great. ( so did the harmonies Dan and Mary ). You guys sing the best when you're not thinking. Singing is great for the soul. cheers
I never knew you could sing! I've been watching loads of TPS this year since I can't go out and gig, and this video is actually getting me quite emotional. Missing singing, missing playing guitar anywhere other than at home, missing gigging.
Yes, yes yes! More singing!
I've just recently ventured down this road, and at first I found it incredibly hard... But the more and more i do it, the better it gets. Self confidence was my biggest hurdle, i got through it by just doing it, and pushing through (especially through all those wrong notes ;) )
Amen to that!
Mick!!! You got a cool voice!!!
Thank you - glad you enjoyed it!
Guys, so inspirational. Y'all will be the reason I get my band up and running. Thanks for all you do.👍
Please do it! It’s so good for the soul, and you’re learning curve basically goes vertical. It’s such a great thing to do. Thanks for watching!
WOW! Jawdropping. More singing from you guys please!
Lovely. Great vocalists - all 3 of you. Brilliant- oh yeah, helpful. Great song choices, too
Thank you!
LOVED this episode!
1. Joey Landreth song from the start
2. Jolene was awesome
3. All you guys sing incredible
4. FANTASTIC tips on harmony!!! I am a lead singer/guitarist and just learning how to sing harmony and this video had so many amazing tips that helped me understand so much better!!!!
Killer vid guys and gal ;-) Amazing as always!
That's awesome that you think it's going to help. Wonderful news!
I never knew Dan can sing 👍 i knew about Mick and Mary‘s beautiful voice is legend but it was great to hear Dan sing - and do well on it! Love the song :-) cheers guys, that was fun!
Dan is the proper musician, singer and guitarist among us all. ;0)
C‘mon you‘re all great!
How did I miss this! Bravo!
I would pay to see this live. You guys should make an album together.
LOVED THE BEGINNING PART
Yeah Baby, Mary & the boys make goosebumps again. Highlight!
You all are so badass, its insane. Love this show!
That was fantastic. We need to see the three of you do more stuff together.
So make a record already!!
Really great stuff you three. Your voices sound wonderful together and this (singing songs) is where music really is. All the guitar wonder that we live is (mostly) just part of a song.
More please!!!!
Thank you Matthew! It’s good to remind ourselves why we actually do this from time to time, right?!
I just had to watch it 2 times in a row. Amazing!
Is Mary THE perfect woman? I think so. That voice is hypnotic.
YES, MUCH MORE OF THIS PLEASE!!! Awesome Awesome Awesome, great video!!
You lot are awesome. A great trio! Plan the world tour!
So killer!
Really enjoyed that guys, thanks!
That was incrdible. Have been thinking of trying more singing for quite a while. Thanks for the video!
Do it! A little bit of effort and you’ll be feeling fantastic. The hardest thing is just getting that initial embarrassment out of the way. Good luck!
I love Mary, she's great
Us too. :0)
Honestly it’s like you guys can read my mind! I’ve been busting a hernia out trying to be Richie Sambora. I just need to sit down and find the notes, totally on that in the morning 🤘😎🤘
This is awesome. Thanks guys
That was really nice to listen to. Especially with that lil bit of bass.
Thank you! It’s nice to get a few positive comments to kick us off. We weren’t sure how people would take this one. Thanks for watching, and for being nice!
That Pedal Show No problem! I would love to hear bass more often in all your videos. A 60's P Bass and a 60's SG Junior, I would loop that demo video.
best video from TGU18 so far, bravo!
Can’t tell you enough how much this video helped me think about my own singing! Thank you all
Bravo 👏 and thank you.
This takes guts. You guys provide such a great service to new musicians here.
This video sent me on such a fruitful musical adventure bros Landreth > Tedeschi Trucks > Little Feat thanks x
This was fantastic and quite inspiring to watch! Thank you.
Who knew Dan and Mick could sing so well?
Great stuff guys, very educational and entertaining.
Cracking episode, I loved it!
You guys sing really well and Mary Spender is an angel 👌👌👌
Awesome lesson! So good to see first hand. Thank you for lighting the path once again! I could watch this for another 2 hours lol
Absolute quality. Cheers and be lucky
One of the great joys in my life: singing in harmony!
I love doing it. Mick here. Never been great at it but it doesn’t matter. A few friends, little bit of effort - happy times! Thanks for watching!
That was so AWESOME. Big thumbs up.
Your voices really do gel together extremely well. Would enjoy hearing more from this collaboration.
Thanks Stevie! We should try that!
Harmony got me into bands
This was great fun, well done!
I love harmonies. nothing sounds better when it's done right.
Yeah. Sorry about that. /0) Ha!
Haha! Didn't mean for it to come across like that. This video was great! :-)
