I'm sorry this happened to you. I saw "Women Only" cars on the Tokyo metro and was confused about why they existed. The Japanese police must not take ちかん seriously enough and it must be too tolerated by society. Where I live, if this happens on a train there is a good chance the woman will protest and either 1) the offender will be arrested, 2) other guys on the train will beat up the offender

I asked my friend Noriko if Tokyo was a dangerous city. She said "certain areas".
And I think if chikan happened in a Western city women would put up a fight
and draw attention and the creep might get caught.
And there is a video of two teenage Japanese girls chasing a chikan creep
off the train and through the station.

I’m sorry this happened to you. There was a news item about a Spanish reporter who was groped by a complete stranger. That guy was arrested. That’s what should happen. Call these predators out or they will keep doing this again and again. You may smack them in the face. Hard.
Japan: I remember reading an article about young girls being harassed/groped in the subways and the authorities created a mascot to highlight the crime

NYC: The people there support crime because they continue to vote in politicians that do not have a desire to stop violence. Chicago: Rahm Emanuel (the current ambassador to Japan) was one of these types on politicians.

Many years ago I was on the Nanbu Train to Kawasaki on a Sunday night. The train was almost empty, just 3 people in our car. A pretty girl was sitting about 10 meters down from me on the other side. She was sitting in the middle with no one around her at all. The train stops and an older man with a newspaper gets on and immediately sits right next to her and opens up his newspaper. There was plenty of room everywhere on the train but he sits right next to her. Of course I saw this and became quite angry. I stood up and walked over to them and I told him to leave her alone. He got up and left the car we were in and I went back to where I was sitting. I still shake my head today at how brazen he was about it...and that was not the only time I've stopped one of these idiots.
I come from a culture in which women (usually drunk) quite often grope men. It can get annoying when it happens multiple times in an evening.
That's not acceptable. Some women think they can get away because they are women.. .
Ugh, shame that this sentiment seems to be shared world wide between women. It's a hard issue to tackle socially, but I really believe it can be helped if objectification of women in general was called out more. I'm not talking just in media portrayal, but in male friend groups or social circles. It's an issue that needs to be solved at the root of the problem, women shouldn't have to go about their lives having to look out for this at all time. It's unfair to carry this burden your whole life when all it comes down to is people being normal.
Thank you for being brave enough to talk about this! Plenty of women in my life also had similar experiences at a young age (which is a whole other topic of creepiness) and it can take a lot to process, it really does help others to know they're not alone

Not only that, but sadly things like cat calling are reportedly more common when the victim is younger. Disgusting...

Facts
when i was an exchange student in japan there was a guy on the train who touched me. the train was so crowded when it happened that i couldn’t get away from him, and i was too nervous to call him out or make a scene. after that i was more careful about avoiding the packed trains and i started waking up earlier to take the local train to school so i wouldn’t be in that position again

As a dude I find the idea of guys doing this absurd. I think most guys don't grope or just touch women in general without permission though. It's kind of self-explanatory that you shouldn't touch women randomly.

The amount of these Sexual harassment stories I come across from Japan is horrifying. And the level that some people go to is disgusting.

Is Chikan more present in Tokyo region? Or it happens a lot in countryside region too?
There are always different forms of chikan in any region. But big cities have more chikan on trains because they are busy.
I saw a guy sleeping on a ladies shoulder/back on the nanboku line, she didnt seem comfortable but kept sitting their typing on her laptop.
I've never went to Japan and don't know any japanese woman personally but as a fan of japanese media (anime, manga, games etc) I always assumed that this is a big problem in the country. If the media commonly portrays some kind of behavior, it's quite probable that this kind of behavior is also common in real life... Art and media tends to portrays what happens in the artists daily lives in some way or another.
I talked with a girl who sold her high school uniforms when she graduated, to men on the internet. Underage girls working in JK businesses were only targeted in 2014 and 2017. This was only 9 and 6 years ago! So when Asagi was in high school these things were rampant!
A lot of the girls tell me about the "bumping uncle" problem as well.
It never stopped being rampant, everytime its just a change of names and dynamics but these things have already been going on since the economy bubble burst of 30 years ago. At this point its just a cats and mouse eternal battle
@@Neonlight. Most stores got shut down but yes some opened under different names. But much more strict in their hiring. Underage girls operate independently or their presence is loosely on twitter and not a website or business.

Hey, I discovered your channel through a comment of yours on CathyCat's channel (Ask Japanese). Lately I have been researching and studying a lot about Japanese culture. I intend to visit Japan within 2/3 years. I know it has nothing to do with the video, but one thing caught my attention about ''Nanpa''. If I'm lost or something, I'm really afraid of approaching a random woman on the street to ask for directions and her misinterpreting me and running away or something. What should I do then?

In the US it’s called groping. And it doesn’t matter if they ask first, it’s still a crime.
Sadly I feel this happens all over. More in some countries then others. I feel in countries where there is a fear of speaking out and where men have more control in society then women. This will be more common place. Overall it's NOT ok and all people should be treated with respect and equally.

Asking 'politely' doesn't erase the grotesquery of someone asking such a thing as you describe from the boy who wanted your underclothes. There's no such thing as "dressing provocatively and asking for it" and it's an issue everywhere. I do understand that Japan is worse than many countries in this regard. I hope your day to day struggles do not include dealing with such behavior Asagi. Even in societies which are not predominantly monotheistic, which I think applies to Japan, the idea that men can do whatever they like to women on account of being men seems never to diminish. Maybe such vile concepts will cease being a thing and women anywhere can simply enjoy their daily lives. I doubt it will happen in our lifetime though.
Dressing provocatively certainly exists. Throughout human history and across all cultures women have accentuated certain aspects of their body to stand out more than other women. You must realize this, especially with how Halloween costumes have become so sexual instead of scary.
There are women who just want to play with men and control men and turn heads for attention and power.
Men are tasked with ignoring these things, but many men today are weak willed against their desires. Some men end up worshipping women while others commit crimes from their lack of restraint and cultivated obsessions.
When a woman dresses provocatively, she has a purpose. It's a trend today to say that women do it for themselves, but I'd argue that the majority of women wouldn't be concerned with cleavage if they were on a deserted island.
These things are natural and found within the animal kingdom for attracting mates. The thing is, when a woman is dressing to attract males, her intention is only towards those males whom she finds attractive and not every old man on a street corner.

What I thought was clear is that there is no such thing as provocatively dressing being an EXCUSE for being fondled or groped or being raped. Using stupid, undisciplined men by playing with their urges towards attractive women, apart from sounding like a monotheistic prejudice against women, is a far cry from what we're discussing. I doubt any woman dresses in an attention-grabbing manner INTENDING to be raped. Comparing the yes, natural, behavior or physiology of other animals (actually the females of each species hold the power there- THEY choose which males they will mate with) is vastly different. Men "giving in" to their natural urges does not mean groping or harassing women. Men taking advantage of women for no other reason than her appearance is not natural. I have known friends who were happy with their appearance and wanted to show it off and still didn't somehow expect or intend to be treated as a party favor over it. I have known friends who were raped and it had nothing to do with their clothing. It had to do with men thinking that by being men they could do as they wanted.

Also there are women who are not attracted to men (lesbians) and they dont want any male attention, but they get assaulted/groped/violated anyways...so what's your excuse in those cases?

I was 11 and I am a man, I was molested by a woman. Women are lucky in the sense that at least they matter when it happens to them. I have opened up about it before and I got made fun of and told I was gay for not liking getting groped as a child.

Unfortunately it is. Even with the “women only” train cars, and more vigilance in regular train cars, it still happens so many times. Whether it’s due to not enough people willing to take action or nobody caring at all, it’s unfortunately not going to be stopped completely any time soon. If at all.

Victims of sexual assault/harassment tend to freeze up in those situations. It's universal all across the world, not just Japan, and not just women.
Think about it for children/teenagers too. Such an experience can really be frightening/shocking and it's normal to not be able to speak up. It can be hard for people to talk about or process these events in general, so for Asagi that should be seen as admirable

There have been Olympic level gymnasts, some of the strongest women in the world, that have been sexually assaulted and they froze up. Having a strong support circle for them to feel confident enough to tell you as a father is a very strong resource which many women wish they had. If you did that, (of course self defense would help too) then you'll be a great father
I believe ( and I could be wrong here ) that self defense in Japan is pretty tricky. If you hit somebody, even in self defense, you're probably gonna go to jail. If you're a foreigner, you're getting kicked out of the country. Permanently.
Yeah it's hard to raise a voice because of many reasons... usually it's not so obvious so you'd be unsure when it happens. Also it's hard to prove to give molesters to the police and so on...

Some homless dude just swipped his hand on my ass as we were passing each other, and i instantly turned around was about to knock the sucker out with intesne insta rage haha. But then i saw he had some major bad hygene (dude likely had some dieseases I dont want), and was like it aint worth it.

I love Japan, however I do have issues on this and how women are generally treated. I didn't notice that they do have or at least some trains have certain cars that are women only.
Humans being the way they are and japan being the way it is, with the culture of politeness and all, its not really surprising that people would take out repressed feelings in this kinda way. Doesnt make it less disgusting and wrong, but it does seem to have something to do with the culture as well. Would seem the solution should be like a combination of personal improvement and changes to the way people communicate. Not really helpful though, as theres a massive difference between recognizing the problem and actually solving it, especially when it comes to large scale social stuff. But i suppose being able to say that there is a problem, and why it could be there in the first place, is better than nothing
From what i've heard and read about such things, the police don't really care about said crime because of no physical injury or theft!
So nothing is done about the reported incident, it's just filed and forgotten about...

Pretty much a worldwide thing. I was hitchhiking in the usa 8 years ago, and im a male, but one of the older guys that picked me up kept trying to feel up my leg and when i kept pushing his hand away he started mas****ating and it was super gross. Thankfully he let me out of the car when we got off the freeway.

Violation is disgusting period. And to know this happened to young girls in Nihon at such a young age, is painful to hear. Even then around the world.
I have heard some other horror stories of the mid to late 90s about this. I would say thankfully, more so, police are taking these matters more seriously in Nihon.
In Showa 昭和 era 時代, if a father found out this happened to one of his girls it was common from what you could discover in some of those newspapers, for the father to seek revenge or murder. By default. Those were also very innovative times for Nihon.
So in this light, Japanese men did act even then, in past times, against those wussy-bitches. ;)
Things like this make me understand why the USA has the 2nd Amendment. It frees you from having to rely on law enforcement to defend yourself even if you're weaker and smaller than your attacker.

It’s sad but it’s also very true. Eventually you’ll realize that some things like crime can never be stopped completely. They can only be managed.
I think women only train carriage should be abolished. There's also a fact that I sometimes see sign saying 'beware of strangers' or something like it. At the community level, municipalities are doing what they can. Police have the record showing that they are catching some of those guys.
I have moved on from sympathizing with weak women who won't stand up for themselves. Some women are just too entitled and I think it's rather pointless to talk about it in this manner. The Japanese word has become a part of English lexicon. The reason is rather obvious.
There was this one Aussie girl who was filming herself while being grouped on the behind. I think that's just absolute nonsense.

When you put a click-bait title like that it hides the reality that Japan is safer for women for other countries. In addition Japan has the most considerate court-system for women, almost always awarding custody of children to mothers. I am assuming you haven't lived outside Japan. Check rape statistics and murder statistics if you don't believe me.
@@lotharlights Some people honestly must live such convenient and easy lives where they don't appreciate that life is hard for everyone, and everyone has unpleasant experiences. For example, I was sexually assaulted in my country by a group of women who were my friends' mothers when I was a teenager, and I have had worse than this also, but I don't intend to discuss it. To be honest I am not frightened, I don't care. I got over it. My life has been full of hard work and challenges and at a certain point I grew up and decided that life is difficult and full of obstacles, and you just be positive, move past it, and accept that some people make errors. You will never be able to convince some people that their experience is really not that bad or their country is not that bad when for them this experience was their most traumatic. Eventually life will teach these people otherwise and if not, good for them, I guess.
