I've heard from many other japanese youtubers that japanese "cancel culture" is worse than western one. is it worse? I have a guess, please tell me if it's accurate or not: western cancel culture is more generalized or widespread, and therefore sometimes it feels watered down, or low effort, meanwhile japanese cancel culture is more focused and very specific and will go after you because they have a very strong sense of justice to tem.

Good point about being in between. After you live in another country, you will take on some habits. After 5 years in Japan and then coming back to the US for a year and a half, I'm still bowing to people sometimes. But there are things you pick up from your "second home" that you like better. I like how clean Japan is, how people greet one another (even me, the scary foreigner!), how people aren't obnoxious and loud and people can sometimes keep their opinions to themselves, think things over rather than just saying the first thing that comes to mind, there's affordable health care for all, etc.
Whereas the US is better in many ways, too. Personal freedoms (though I feel a bit more free in Japan, strangely), no rigid social structure, you can do what you want, within reason, without people judging you too much, LGBT rights, relaxed stance on drugs, etc.
Anyone who thinks their country is better than everyone else probably also thinks they are better than everyone else. It's just arrogance. Time to see the world, people! After quarantine, at least...

You know, there is a joke about languages: "What do you call a person who speaks 2 languages? Bilingual. What do you call a person who speaks 3 languages? TRI-lingual. What do you call a person who only speaks one language? American!" OK, a bad joke, but somewhat true! I think because we Americans are brought up to believe we are the best country in the world, then English must be the best language, and everyone else should learn to speak it! Many people here do not study a second language until high school if at all and then, only to pass graduation requirements.

Hi, Asagi-san. Just found your channel recently and really enjoy it. Though from recent trips to Japan I realize it is getting better, I guess some attitudes have lingered since I lived in Japan in the mid 70s and early 80s. Even in the business area of Honmachi in Osaka early on, I could go weeks and not see another foreigner. I found over all, 50% were among the nicest I'd ever met while the other 50% were among the lowest form on life on the planet. At first, I assumed the haters just had lingering animosity from WWII. After a while it became obvious that many were my age with no memories of the war but were jealous of foreigners dating good-looking, classy Japanese women when they couldn't. It was even worse for my then fiancee now wife of 37 years from women who either had no prospects of dating a foreigner or the ability to travel oversees. The best part was when my wife recently saw friends she hadn't seen since '83 and they said "wakai, naa!" Meanwhile some stranger women our age that would give her dirty looks, were definitely older and frumpy looking. It's all envy and sometimes outright jealousy! Keep up the great videos, Asagi-san!

Hi , enjoyed this video , glad to see you do not let such people get you down . There are a lot things I prefer about other cultures compared to British culture . Go back far enough and we share common ancestors that ventured out across the earth and developed our cultures over time . Now that we can easily travel I think it is a positive thing to learn and appreciate each others cultures . keep up the good work .

I guess when it comes to the internet, women in particular are always an easy target for random, bitter people to get in their feels about. But I’m glad you just let it roll off your back. You have to be brave to show your face online! They could never handle the scrutiny themselves.

I agree that trolls are a part of life--especially social media. Trolls desperately want you to step down with them into their little version of hell. Any one who is a performer contends with this fact-of-life like vacuuming dust (and maybe even bugs) at home. I appreciate that you already understand this.

There is always going to be haters, specially when someone does not fit the norm. Haters, hate because is the only way the can be noticied. Do not worry what they say, most of then feel the need to diminish other in order to feel a sense superiority, its the only way they can feel their worth. Live your life as you want, do the things that make you happy and fullfil you, screw the rest.

Ths is just more proof that we all need to be more wary of what types of social media we choose to participate in. Sites like Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, etc really don't hold much appeal for me, as they can get pretty toxic, very quickly.
It's one thing if Asagi was saying "Look at me, look at me--I'm a Japanese native who speaks fluent English", but she isn't like that, AT ALL.

It's too bad it happens, but it was gracious of you to point out that as a content creator, idiots and the ignorant are going to flame, but that it doesn't bother you that much. Covid has certainly brought a lot of these individuals out. I imagine the comments still sting a little. No content creator deserves the silly uneducated flash comments from someone who probably didn't even think about what there were typing. You have a good attitude and I hope it helps other creators out there. we appreciate your sharing time with us.

Never mind those people Asagi ... they are small minded and probably don't know very much at all about the world outside of their own country. In fact I pity them for their mental shortcomings ... I'm from London, but I have lived in Spain, Japan and I'm now in Shanghai, China ..... My experiences in four different countries tell me one thing ... we are all the same ... we all do the same things ... we go to school and university, graduate, get a job, get married and have kids ... grow old, retire and then pass away ... no matter which country we're from ... we are all the same ... There really is no such thing as a "foreigner", because human beings are all one family .. Our blood is the same colour, we are born on the same planet, and we see the same moon at night ... the earth is a tiny dot in the universe ... so the people who want to create barriers between different "nationalities" are a waste of time bothering with ....... I have encountered hundreds of such people here in China ... I can understand mandarin very well, so I can understand perfectly when people are making fun of me or other "foreigners", and I can tell you, the joke is on them, not me ...... When I tell them in mandarin that I understood everything they said ... their smug smile suddenly disappears and they look thoroughly humiliated and ashamed ...... but I don't get angry at them. I know that these kinds of people can be found in every country, whether it be the UK, Japan, China, India, USA or anywhere ... we cannot help them ... but we can pity them! ... Keep doing what you're doing Asagi-san. Your videos are always interesting! Spreading positivity is always better than spreading hatred!!! ... Cheers! 😎

so basically being interested in different cultures and languages and letting them influence your attitude, personality or appearence in a good way became something negative for those people...great! First of all I don't see why we don't have pocahontas guys too, I know many people that would fit into that definition but nobody judges them while I hear many comments against the female counterpart. That said I guess I should hope in an increase of "pocahontas" (girls but also guys, I don't see why more guys shouldn't start caring about what there's outside Japan too) then since most of the interesting and meaningful conversations I had with Japanese people were with this so called "pocahontas" people (I mean at least you don't hear those "do foreigners do that too?" kind of question that makes 0 sense mostly because you are including who knows how many countries into one word). Anyway keep up the good work Asagi and have a laugh reading these close minded comments! 😂
