- In this video I show you how I paint a swatch of long fur. I'm using acrylic paints here but it can be done in either oils or acrylics. This is by no means the only way to do it, but it is my method. I hope you like it :)

I'm painting a portrait of my daughters dog for her as a present.
I'm having difficulty getting the nose fur right. Can you suggest how to do short fur on his nose please
Hi and thank you so much for the kind comment! The fur around the nose can be tricky. Its important to view this area as abstract shapes and paint loosely on the first layers before honing in on details in later layers. I can give you more specific pointers if I see a pic of the pup you're painting. If youd like, go to my Instagram page (link above) and send me a pic of your reference and I'll tell u how I'd approach that area. Or you can look at my pet portraits and tell me if any of them look like yours and I'll tell u what I did for that area of fur. Thanks for watching❤

Could you paint the whole background dark, then add lighter colours,?
Absolutely! Although if using oils I'd probably wait for each layer to dry before adding the next layer to avoid muddying up your paint. Happy painting!!

Mary BeVard Thank you! It was Procreate on the iPad with an apple pencil☺ Its a powerful app and unbelievably affordable!
I downloaded Procreate and am trying to do what you did to separate the midtones and such for this fur. How exactly do you do it? Did you important a photo and then separated the tones with the app? This would help me soooo much! I just don’t know how to do it
Mary BeVard hi I imported my reference photo into Procreate. I kept this in it's own layer. I then added a new layer for each tone, keeping each tone as a separate layer. I used the Apple pencil and one of the paintbrush tools in procreate to shade in each tone in it's own layer. This just helps me visualize how to begin the painting. With enough practice you won't need the iPad to be able to decide where to paint in your initial colors on a real canvas. Hope this helps!

Julia Bos thanks for watching! Were you able to find the Procreate app? It's so much easier to learn than photoshop. And I paid only $6 for it. Of course it's not as sophisticated or versatile. But it's still an excellent app for the iPad. If you use the apple pencil with it on the iPad Pro, it's sensitive to the pencil's angle and pressure
what's the last brush you use ... to make the long, thin hairs?

Do you know how to paint a goats eye. The pupil is a rectangle.
Virginia R Parker goats eyes are very similar to horse eyes. I think I can work on video covering several animal eyes including horses and goats. Thank you for the idea!
