Hi! The name of this tuning (A G D) is Bağlama düzeni. The name of the other common tuning for long neck baglamas (G D A), the one you use in other videos, is Bozuk düzeni.
Regarding this, I have a question: do you use the same set of strings (I mean, the same gauges) for this two tuning systems? Or do you change strings when changing the tuning? If so, which gauges do you use for each tuning?
Thanks man! Your videos have been helpful to start playing and understanding the instrument a little better, since they are one of the few practical things in English about the baglama. ;)

I am using the same string gauge, but have broken a few strings experimenting with higher pitched tuning.

Omg... there's only one method book on Amazon for the Saz, called "A Method Book for the Turkish Folk Instrument The Baglama" and all the songs in it use this tuning. I've been searching for information on it but this is almost the only explanation I can find. The problem is that the book never mentioned whether it's meant for long or short neck. I've been trying to get this in tune and the thick stings feel like they are about to break because they come out of tune as soon as you let go off the peg (i have a long neck). Now that I know this is a short neck tuning, I feel soooo much better. Now at least I know why it's acting like this and I can find something else to learn with.
    Thank You!!!!

You can try tuning all the strings equally lower for example ( GFC) if the string tension feels too tight.. this can be for personal preference or if it is causing strings to snap. The slipping peg can also be the peg is not fitting well, sometime I really have to push my pegs down into the holes to prevent this, or remove the peg and rub either some wax or violin bow rosin on them will also make them hold better.

I just got my long neck baglama. I managed to achieve this tuning after first breaking one of the middle strings. However if you let them stretch amd tune slowly (like fresh strings on a guitar) and hammer in the peg after tuning (lightly) they will hold nicely. Its been about 3 weeks now and they still haven't gone out of tune

What gauge is each string on each course? I haven't been able to find specifics on the sets of Short Neck Baglama strings to what goes where.
    As far as I can tell its (A) 0.5 mm (a) 0.18 mm (g) 0.28mm (g) 0.28mm (D) 0.40mm (d) 0.18mm (d) 0.18mm
Am I on the money or am I off?

    • @calinguga
      @calinguga Před 2 měsíci

i haven't found actual information either (there probably is plenty, but in turkish), but based on what i've seen, and the string sets i own, and a string tension calculator, you are right (although the A is a bit thicker, about 0.58mm).
unfortunately there's a discrepancy: the a and the two gs are almost the same note and should more or less share a gauge (the 0.28mm), there's no reason for them to be that far apart, to my sense. but the string sets i own both have only two 0.28mms, and four 0.18mms (one spare i guess).
so unless my math is wrong it would go:
      A2 0.58mm 0.023in (wound)
      a3 0.18mm 0.007in (plain) (sus)
      g3 0.28mm 0.011in (plain) X2
      D3 0.40mm 0.16in (wound)
      d4 0.18mm 0.007in (plain) X2
if i string it up like this i expect the a3 to be very loose, so i'll probably just swap it with a guitar 10 gauge (0.25mm), the tension works out uniform over all of the strings that way. (by the way my saz has no strings on it, so i have no reference to measure.)

    • @Guitar101Ramstein

you won't have the right gauge with guitar strings and if you put too heavy of strings on, there is no truss rod , so you will risk damaging/warping/breaking the neck or body. baglama strings are easy to find on ebay, amazon etc.

Best book right now in english for baglama - saz, I believe is this:
      www.amazon.co.uk/BA%C4%9ELAMA-METODU-1-2-Kolektif/dp/9944396648
by Arif Sag and Erdal Erzincan (both legends of baglama).
It is actually dual language in english and turkish. Has all the basics of positions, scales, playing techniques, exercises, etc.
It concerns the short neck and uses the tuning that is described in the video Re - Sol - La. (bottom to top)
(also another thing is that a lot of saz players use trasponsing systems. So they tune for example in Mi - La - Si, but describe it as Re - Sol - La. So La is not absolute.)
