I don't know if you ever realized it, but the stink spirit was actually a river spirit. He was so dirty because his river was polluted.
Not only that, when Sen (Chihiro) and the rest of the Bath House Spirits pull the Bicycle and the trash from the River Spirit’s body it was based on an actual real life experience by Hayao Miyazaki. Miyazaki and 10 other people had to pull out a bicycle from a local river that was polluted and once the bicycle and trash were removed, the river eventually became clean again and the fish returned as well.

It's wild to me that not everyone grew up watching this but that makes it so much more exciting to see people react as adults!

Studio Ghibli films are my childhood! I could remember watching them through cable TV. Nowadays, I wouldn't be more happy to watch them on Netflix, again. ❤❤
it just shows how different we are in different countries or based on our parents o even money, we all grew up differently. I´m 24 now and I think I discovered studio ghibli last year or so

The same animator was in charge of the scene where Chihiro cries and eats rice balls and the scene where Haikyuu's players cry and eat in the cafeteria after losing in the match against Aoba Johsai.
Chihiro and Hinata's facial expressions are similar.
Haku's voice actor and Haikyuu's Suga are the same person.
The voice actor voiced Haku in his debut work when he was a child actor.

There is also an interpretation that the moment Chihiro let go of Haku's hand, she forgot everything that happened in the village. Miyazaki Hayao always creates weird things and unkind storylines. But the stories always touch the heartstrings, and he make sure we know what message he wanted to convey in the end. Ghibli films seem to come to us much more deeply if we feel them with our hearts rather than looking for a very specific reason rationally.
Once Chihiro reached the end of the tunnel and turned around that was the moment she forgot everything. Hayao Miyazaki confirmed it. Her hair clip was the only object that confirmed that her trip in the spirit world happened for real.

@@Yoshi-qp1mg Many Japanese authors make their stories with a bittersweet ending most of the time to make us feel more emphatetic to the characters and the story. Probably it's also because Japanese tend to feel "pessimistic" in a sort of way? I mean, they have a different thoughts about life in general, which I really admire.
Happy endings where everyone is happy feel like a lie to Japanese people.

Many Japanese movies don't intentionally make the ending clear and leave it up to the viewer, so it's a lot of fun to think about it.
Ghibli movies have the most beautiful way of showing us that love comes in many forms, friends show up at unexpected times, and the beauty of nature is vital to our souls
I watched this movie when I was a child. I got scared when the parents became pigs and the city changed to a spirit world; but I continued watching because of the character development and magnificent frames. That movie changed me!

this movie is currently playing in our local theater and i just watched it for the 5th time but first time in a theater and it was absolutely magnificent
I watched this in the theater when it was first released, I loved the animation, but didn't care much for the story, because I was too young to understand it. Watched it again later in life and it is a master piece. I can't wait for Ghibli new film coming out next month, "The Boy and the Heron."

I’ve already seen your reaction to Spirited Away, but I rewatched just because. God the way I love this movie! It’s been my favorite film since I saw it back in 2003, I was 7 years old at the time, I watched it with a classmate back then who since has been my best friend, this year we celebrated 21 years of friendship and just in time, the movie was screened again in theaters here, so we went to see it together again. We both cried. My best friend is also a professional violin player and she played at Animatissimo, an orchestra here in Peru that plays famous anime and video game scores, I went to see their Ghibli symphony. I legit cried during several songs but specially in the Spirited Away ones, my best friend also cried during that one.
Ghibli films just have something to them that I feel a lot of new animated films lack, they have so much heart, so much thought put in them, they touch on so many societal topics. Miyazaki’s last film came out this year, The Boy and The Heron, I’m dying to watch it, I’m waiting for it to be released here.

I think it's great that they are both watching the film with Japanese audio. The Japanese audio version is the true reflection of the director Miyazaki and the voice actors who portrayed the characters.
This is still my favourite Ghibliomovie. I barely go to the cinema but I watched it there 3 times. The music in all Ghibli- lives is so outstanding and the design for all the gods is just beautiful and unique
23:15 That was the spirit of a great river in Japan. By coming to the bath house it was able to be cleansed of all the things people had been throwing into the river over the years. Bicycles, rubbish and all things people just casually pollute the water with 😡

Even though everyone was born and raised in different places, there is a high probability that overseas people watching this movie will react to Kamaji's name and say things like "Jumanji?" or "That name sounds like Jumanji." It was interesting to see that almost everyone reacted happily.
By the way, here's how the characters' names are written in Japanese and what they mean in English.
釜爺（Kamaji）=釜（kama.buthtub or coal-fired kiln or iron cauldron）+爺（Ji.elderly gentleman）=The old man who manages the baths, and the old man who heats the baths.
湯婆婆（Yubaba）=湯（Yu or tou.boil water or hot water）+婆（babaa or baba. elderly lady）+婆=Old woman who is the manager of this spa hotel.
It also means the old woman who is a greedy ruler.
This is because there is a Japanese proverb which says that people spend money like hot water without turning off a tap (meaning, in the eyes of the people around them, to waste money badly, to waste huge sums of money in an unplanned and unregulated manner).
The term was coined because in the past, very few people in Japan owned bathtubs in their private homes, and even the wealthy classes such as the royal family, aristocrats, samurai and wealthy merchants spent more time using sauna-style steam baths than they did for a long time.
The Japanese have always been fond of hot springs and cleanliness since ancient times, but the prototype of the household bath in the same format as today, which uses a lot of hot water, was created around 1596-1615.
However, most were installed in public bathhouses, just like hot springs, and became places of relaxation where men and women, young and old, could chat and enjoy themselves in a lively atmosphere.
(As an added bonus, this also served as a crime prevention measure. If there was a suspicious person, the inhabitants of the town or village would immediately say, "I don't remember seeing such a person in the public baths. Incidentally, 1hiro = 1.5 m or 1.8 m.
In the case of Chihiro, the meaning is even more restricted, meaning very long or very deep, as it is a thousand times longer than 1hiro. So in Japanese, the expression 'Chihiro no umi ni kogidasu' (I start rowing my boat towards the big ocean) is sometimes used when rowing out into the big sea, at the beginning of an adventure or when encountering a large amount of books or knowledge.
There is also a saying 'Shishi ha senjin no tani ni ko wo otosu'.
This saying originates from a legend that lions have a custom of plunging their cubs to the bottom of a valley to see if they can survive in the harsh natural environment, and raising only those cubs with high vitality that have crawled up out of the valley on their own,

Chihiro and the nicknames and common names for these names are usually Chii, Chiichan, Chiibou,Chizu and Chizuchan.

Spirited Away, Sen to Chihiro no Kamikakushi is my favorite movie! When I was a kid I went to watch it for a field trip. We can watch it on TV too, so I watched it more than 5 times!

Yubaba-the “villain” in Spirited Away-is said to have been inspired by Yamauba or Onibaba, which is a Yōkai that usually appears in Japanese folklore. Yamauba is a type of kijo (female demon) or a mountain witch who was originally a human but became corrupted and turned into a Yōkai (Japanese ghost such as Yuurei or spirit (Sei). This may be a bit wrong but it’s such a vast set of subject to tell the truth! There are good versions of these sort of entities too with another name that I can’t recall and that’s sometimes hard to find the exact name for the exact thing since there are hundreds of Yōkai! 😂❤
it’s as I described… many videos that explain about these types of beings that become like Yubaba when before they used to be alot wiser and were often healers and sages of the area. Both human and non human could become like Yubaba and others that may or not have been shown in the films. But the films definitely showed a heck of alot of Yōkai and other beings which was amazing enough❤️
With Japanese stuff it’s even more complex and deep to where even the stuff I’m sharing today is far deeper and more nuanced and sometimes similar characters or beings or exact same entities show up in different stories that became very famous ancient theatre plays etc.

When grampa said “love”, this implies that Chihiro and Haku were siblings. Chihiro fell in the river as described in the movie, Haku, as a human and her brother, saved her but he drowned in the river. Because such a pure mind of Haku that he just wanted to save his sister’s life, he became a spirit of the river he drowned. Chihiro’s mother is always somewhat cold to her because of grief of losing of her son, and Chihiro’s mom cannot help thinking that he died because of Chihiro. In this movie, it was Chihiro’s turn to save her brother. This story is about siblings’ love.❤

This movie is the best! the older you get the more you enjoy this.
And it's so deep as well. I read it somewhere before, apparently this movie is about adulthood. Chihiro represents a person who has just entered adulthood (aka the forst jobber lol) She had to work to survive (Yubaba said that if anyone doesn't work they will be turned into a pig.) Haku lost his identity (name), and No Face represents the loneliness and abandonment of adulthood.

Haku’s real name is Nigihayami Kohakunushi (饒速水小白主, Nigihayami Kohakunushi, lit. "Master of the Swift Amber River", referred throughout the film by the name Yubaba gives him: (ハク, haku), some say he is the deuteragonist of Spirited Away - (Sen tó Chihiro nó Kamikakushi)
Ahhh, this unlocks so many old good memories for me, I loved this movie so much on my childhood (I still do), I watched it with my younger brother.

Princess Mononoke has been my favorite anime movie since I watched it in the 2000s. Before that, the only other anime movie I'd seen was Akira. I recommend Princess Mononoke if you haven't seen it yet. Anything Miyazaki is a winner, but it's the best in my opinion.

The movies are much more softer and gentler than modern day anime but they contain a quality which everyone can take something from. I hope you guys touch on the movie “Princess Mononoke” as i believe you’ll both enjoy this old classic :)!
Well this one is definitly more oriented towards aldults and not really soft, but I get your point. Ghibli movies are (most of them) heartwarming and they are always very poetic and imaginative.
And Princess Mononoke is definitly one of the best ones :)

In the second half of the story, the things that look like animal monuments before entering the tunnel are the former humans who looked back even though they shouldn't have looked back.
It's like Lot's wife when he came out of Sodom and Gomorrah in the Bible.
I love this movie!
One thing I notice about Miyazaki and portraying romantic love in his movie(As Zeniba refers to Kohaku as Chihiro's "Dragon Boyfriend", indicating the love Chihiro has for Kohaku is romantic love), is he often presents the idea that romantic love isn't just for what we consider as "adults" what we consider as "kids" are just as capable of having romantic love as adults, some may even be capable to have that kind of love for someone way before others.
Something to know in terms of the way that Chihiro's parents treated Chihiro and the way they were careless had a lot to do with how safe Japan is, in Japan, children are expected to walk to school without adult supervision by Chihiro's age which is 10 years old up to the end of high school as far as I know, because it is so safe, parents don't have to constantly check if the child stay close by all the time, and for a lot of Japanese parents, they don't have the worry of their child getting lost as much with the safe environment.
There is actually proof that Kohaku and Chihiro are soulmates, Chihiro is the only one who knows Kohaku when he's in his dragon form, their storylines are similar, even after years without meeting each other, they recognized each other.
The 6th stop means home, love, and family.
In the first scene of the movie where you can see the goodbye card, the card says "Good luck, Chihiro. Hope we meet again."
That's more than just a coincidence.
A lot of people think that kids are not capable of romantic love, that it is impossible for kids to have romantic feelings for anyone, but this is not that simple, yes, a lot of kids don't have that kind of experience, but when I was a kid and I watched Spirited Away, near the end where Kohaku's eyes literally sparkles like the most beautiful emerald gems I had ever seen at the age of 12, that was the moment when I know I was in love and the feelings were for sure romantic.
SG movies are something special. Everything from the art style, music, acting etc. brings out emotions deep within. I've not yet watched every SG movie but from the ones I've seen, anything I listen to the OSTs that Joe composed, I can't help but feel strong emotions.

One of the finest films ever made, created by the greatest animation/film studio of all time. Capped off with direction by one of the greatest minds in the history of cinema.
I’m happy to explain a bit more what a Yōkai is. Interestingly there are many good kind too and often can depend on how we treat others around us as well as objects in our daily lives ❤ but aside from that there are many types of Yōkai that are not simply associated with objects. Heck. Sometimes they can imbue or attach to objects as well.
Which is why even every object as a fork or chopsticks are treated with care and respect, for if they aren't they become negative versions of Yōkai which also puts bad luck upon the family or the specific family member, thr opposite happens if treated well. We choose the fate or their transformation as they grow to have a spirit potent enough to become considered living by our modern standards. Same as how a beloved family dog becomes a guardian of that family forever. Even gets a statue outside & inside the house and at times even gets a place by the family ancestral shrines within the home itself!

So great to see your reaction! I humbly request that you all continue to react to Ghibli movies. They are Al so heartwarming and amazing, and the art and music are truly peak cinema. They are a big part of the reason i took an interest in Japanese culture, so much so that I just moved to Japan earlier this year from the US.

At the end of the movie. I wonder in how much time has passed it looks like a week or two. Why did the parents think someone was playing a prank no one knows that they were there. They be surprised in how much time has passed. Wondering if they have a home to go back to. I bet there is a missing persons report on them
There’s a theory that Haku is Chihiro’s brother who tried to save her from drowning but he died, but because of his kind heart he was turned into a god of the Kohaku river. Their mom is somehow a bit harsh on Chihiro as you can see at the beginning because Chihiro was the reason why her son died. She thinks she loves Chihiro but unconsciously she is hard on Chihiro.

That theory doesn’t make sense because she firmly remembers being saved by a dragon and Kohaku said “you fell into me”. He’s the embodiment of the river. Japanese parents can be more strict, that’s why the mum seems more harsh than your standard mother. She was also more impatient than anything.

日本では昔は特に安全で、千と千尋も結構前に作られた映画なので子供を1人で車で待たせるとか普通でした。海外だと子供を1人にさせるのはダメだと聞いてますが、だからお二人が驚かれていたのが新鮮なリアクションでした。😊日本では子供だけで公園に行きますし、子供だけで電車で通学してる子もいます。最近は危険なこともありGPSつき携帯を持たせる親も増えましたが😅

I’ll never get tired of watching ghibli films. All of them are masterpieces. So much love put into action packed plus movies with never not a lesson to learn that I keep catching later on after countless rewatches
Spirited away is a lot of things. One thing I noticed on this watch with you guys is how you can never predict any character lol. Although that does happen a whole bunch of times with this studio (is what makes them so enjoyable), this movie in particular, it’s likely to be among the main themes. Everyone’s not what they seem. No face just started starving, ate too much then went thru hangover at the end of the movie. He’s aight
