- Studio Ghibli does it again. LIPPSMACKER watches My Neighbor Totoro for the first time and it is an emotional journey. I don't know how these films wreck me in the most subtle of ways, but I am a puddle of emotions.

One additional comment: Note how the father is depicted in this film - as a loving guardian of his daughters, who is totally on "Team Satski and Team May." His character completely avoids a cliche that you would find in American films: When May reports seeing the Totoros, the father is not at all concerned with the idea that she's making up stories, or in assuming she's lying (or hallucinating) and is not interested in persuading her to "tell the truth." On the contrary, he is patient and reassuring in the face of May's fantastical story; He is accepting enough to consider that May really did meet supernatural forest creatures that adults can't see. His priority is to comfort her, and to provide an interpretation of what she saw where she is not in any way in the wrong. He is NOT concerned with 'getting his daughter to act properly' -- she's already doing that. :)
Yes! He know that his daughters are still young and he keeps the wonder of the world alive instead of crushing their “childish” imaginations and I love it!
Just a small correction, it's spelled Satsuki. In japanese names that have a U in between S and K, is silent as P in psychology, such in Sasuke (as in Naruto and Mystical Ninja) and Sosuke.
Also the spelling of the younger sister's name is Mei, the same as Mei in Turning Red (which by the way, comes from chinese mei mei meaning little sister).
@@mevb You’re correct: ‘Satsuki’ vs ‘Satski’ is one of the curious differences between the more recent & more widely available Disney DVD dub, and the older ‘Fox’ DVD dub (which has the character’s name as ‘Satsuki.’ As the Fox dub was the first way that I was introduced to this film, I personally prefer that the character’s name be pronounced as’Satsuki,’ with the ‘U’ clearly audible. 🙂
@@tranya327 The swedish dub unfortunatley prononuces Satsuki with a U but in Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea, they got Sosuke right (so-ské).

Ghibli movies have me on the edge of a very emotional seat
It's a mark of an excellent storyteller that they can take the premise of "you're a child and your mom is sick" and turn it into something like this. It feels like this movie captured all light and dark emotions of being a kid; you don't really have a good grasp on the world, but you try your best; you stumble, you lash out, you make poor decisions that you FEEL must be the right ones... everything, from finding an acorn to your mom having a cold, gets magnified by a thousand, because your world hasn't expanded enough to realize that those things are just ... life.
Hayao Miyazaki is a master of making you feel what it's like to grow up.
This movie is the best kids movie I know. This is the best parenting I’ve ever seen portrayed anywhere. Being 43 years old, It makes me feel all sentimental and appreciate my mother, who raised me and my sister on her own so much more! I need to watch ‘My Neighbor Totoro’ again soon!

I hope my daughter looks back on this fondly as she gets older. We are are Studio Ghibli fans in our house, with Totoro being the first we ever watched when she was probably 5 (she's 15 now). Princess Mononoke was the first rated R movie she saw at age 9 (in the theater no less). I think I first saw Mononoke in the summer of '99 just after moving to the Bay Area in a theater in Berkley and it was one of those "I'm never going to forget this." moments (I was 34 at the time). Spirited Away came out while we lived in the Bay Area as well, and of course we saw it when it came out. We lived across the street then up the street from one of the greatest video stores in the country (RIP Le Video of San Francisco) and rented SO much anime after that move and my casual fandom for anime blossomed SO incredibly much during that period before it was so widespread. I have so many moments tied up with this film and it represents so much in terms of my own daughter's childhood, seeing her own childhood joy in these girls as well, and being able to use this movie to remember to continue to remember my own childhood joy in such simple things like tree tunnels, rain, dust sprites, and simply nature and relationships between each other.
I didn't see Nausica of the Valley of the Wind until much later in my life (I was past 50), but when I did see it, it immediately became my favorite of their entire studio library.
Thank you for doing these (despite the crazy risk involved since Japanese studios are notoriously litigious about CZcams reactions). It's equally fun to see your joy at watching this for me.
I watched this when I was a kid still, and I thought it was cute children's film. Watched it again some months back and ugly cried through a lot of it.
An ex-bf of mine was a big, evil metalhead (he wasn't but he liked it when people thought that) who had big, evil tastes in movies. One week, he was the sickest a human ever was (he had a bad cold) and after not sleeping well for a couple of nights he asked to put on something nice. Just a nice feel-good movie. I took advantage of his vulnerable state and showed him a movie he always refused to watch with me because it was for kids and girls: Kiki's Delivery Service.
He also cried. Like Totoro, it's a very low-stakes movie but, also like Totoro, it is told from the angle of the very young protagonists, so the small things seem big. The common things seem scary or magical when experienced for the first time. Much more scarier or magical than they are to an adult (for example, for all we know the mom could have been in the hospital because of a broken leg. Something that needs care and treatment but usually isn't life-threatening. But it doesn't matter. For small children, it's "mom is gone, mom is in the hospital, hospitals are for people who are seriously ill, mom is seriously ill!" either way. Or the goat. It's just a goat but for a little child who's on eye-level with the animal and holds on to an item that symbolizes "I'll see mom soon if I only hold on to it!", it's terrifying.).
We parted ways for many good reasons but credit where credit is due, he said something about specifically these Ghibli movies that I think is very true (paraphrased by me): It hits hard because it perfectly shows a world we once had and couldn't wait to outgrow and now we can never have it again, and that hurts. Even if we tried, we can't have this childlike wonder anymore.
And it's true. We can take fruit or veggie seeds and plant them and see what happens, and it feels fun and great when they sprout. But it's just not the same magical wonder it was when we grew something, even if it wasn't something edible, from a seed and saw the first sprout.
We can go on any trip and explore different cultures and lands and it's a great adventure that'll create great memories. But it's just not the same magical adventure as playing in grandmother's garden and venturing through the hedges and bushes to see the world they were hiding on the other side.
I'm not saying adventures and explorations as an adult are bad or worse, it's not. Those are wonderful experiences, too. But the world will never again feel as big and wonderous as it did when we were children and I think whether we're fully aware of it or not, Totoro and Kiki remind us of these times and that they're gone. And I guess that's why we feel sad, sometimes to the point of crying when we watch these movies. They allow us to have a glimpse of these enormous childhood feelings and wonders, and that's sweet and fun but there's simply no door for us that allows us to go back, even if it's just for a visit.
9:11 I visited the Ghibli Museum near Tokyo and they had a giant catbus you could sit in. It was really soft and squishy. I didn't want to get up. lol
It's the nostalgia for me... it makes you think about being a kid, and when you look back to being that innocent and carefree, but then mix in a little bit of worry and uncertainty... for a kid that age? It can just be gutwrenching.

I will never not be impressed at how this movie manages to be fun, heartwarming and serious at the same time. I've had experience of relatives being hospitalized and I can assure you the last minutes capture that feeling so damn well. This will always be one of Miyazaki's masterpieces.
i also enjoy that the stakes are mundane (important but realistic) and are not "world ending", but rather the character's world would "end" if something happened to their loved ones. So much of the stakes are about caring for the well-being of their family members. Their mom being sick, mei missing, waiting for their dad to come home but he's late...the little moments of tension we all experience as a consequence of love.
Never EVER watch “grave of the fireflies”. I did twenty years ago and it still haunts my heart
That movie absolutely destroyed me... BUT if you do, Lipps, two things: 1 - you will need at least 2 full boxes of tissues, and 2 - watch it subtitled, the English dub is utter garbage

I love this movie! You actually do find out what happens with their mother. If you watch the end credits, you’ll see her come home in a taxi. You’ll also see a baby a couple of time which tells me Satsuki and Mei get a younger sibling.
And the baby is dressed in blue, which hints that it's probably a baby brother.
Japan traditionally has had a very high incidence of Tuberculosis and Miyazaki's mother was sick from it when he was a child so presumably the hospital the mother is in is a Tuberculosis ward.

as an older sister, the part where Satsuki's feet get all torn up from running around looking for Mei really resonates with me. This mundane little suffering that shows the worry she's feeling, and how she will endure pain and push through it for Mei. It perfectly shows an older sibling's care and love. And getting upset and snapping when your younger sibling is being obstinate, bc you are also hurt and dissapointed, and just not being able to bear it in that moment. very relatable.

i think the mom is implied to have a more serious long term illness but that she caught a cold as she was recovering that made her condition stall a bit, was staying longer until she recovered just in case.

This was such a joy to watch! This movie is my childhood💕
The way I see it, this movie just spot on the childish feeling of being lost or worrying for your loved ones. A feeling any kid had felt. So even as adult, we're able to conect deeply because we remember than fear. I love it but it always awoke dark memories to me.
This movie is truly one of the great movies of my childhood, awesome that you loved this film. Another great Japanese animation Film is “Steamboy” from 2004, while not a studio Ghibli film it is in my mind right up there.

You should watch Ponyo (on the Cliff by the Sea), it's another feel good movie from Studio Ghibli, which is inspired by The Little Mermaid (both the Hans Cristian Andersen fairy tale and the Disney animated movie). Other Ghibli movies I recommend are Kiki's Delivery Service, Porco Rosso, Howl's Moving Castle and Whisper of the Heart.
Great reaction this is my favourite movie of Studios Ghibli it bring me memories of my childhood i have watched this movie so many times and still have an impact over me, i hope you will react to Howl's Moving Castle its an absolutely must. It's officially pronounced GIB-lee, not JIB-lee, because in Japanese, G is always hard. Which is funny because the word comes from another language where it's actually pronounced JIB-lee. 😆 This was all in an "extra" on one of the Studio Gibli DVDs.
Notes on the film:
I love how Totoro just glances at Mei, and he seems like he's thinking: "What's this on top of me? Oh. It's just a small human. Nothing to worry about. Back to sleep." 😆
Kanta seems to be cripplingly shy with anyone who he's new to, but he's still far too much of a gentleman to allow two girls to be stranded in the rain, even if he can't force himself to speak to them. 😄
My Neighbour Totoro is a prime example of a no-antagonist film. Even Kanta, who seems unfriendly at first, turns out to just have been shy and is a really nice boy once you get to know him.
I think that Totoro's attitude is: "Why should I cause anyone harm when I can instead do so much good?" He's super-powerful, but he controls his power and uses it wisely. I'm reminded of a bit from the LOTR story where Gimli the dwarf says something about Fangorn being dangerous, and Gandalf reminds Gimli that Aragorn is dangerous, Legolas is dangerous, that he, Gandalf, is dangerous and even Gimli himself is dangerous. The point being that just being "dangerous" isn't a good criteria for fearing someone or something. Respect, yes, but fear is not needed when the strong control themselves.
So glad you choose to share your experience of watching the beloved film, "My neighbor Totoro" for the first time, with all of us!

You say that "we don't know" (about the mother - implying that we don't know if she gets well), but that isn't true: the film shows us stills of the family life (in the days and weeks after the events of the film) during the film's closing credits: The mom DOES return from the hospital, to the family's new home, the girls DO get to enjoy their days with a rejuvenated mom, the girls continue to have wholesome childhood adventures as they grow up. The closing credits and the series of still images, directly show us this.

FYI - Miyazaki set this story in the 1950s, but in 'an alternate universe, in which World War II never happened.' (This makes sense: The setting has simple tech like electric lights, simple radios, telephones, etc. The family has a level of modest wealth that we can envision some Japanese having if the Japanese economy weren't left in ruins by WW II. Also, the people of the community are all polite, respectful, pleasant (apart from Kanta, but even he respects the girls, in his own way). In other words, the Japanese society is depicted as devoid of the nationalism and militarism of Imperial Japan, and is also devoid of an American occupying presence that would have been present in the Japan of the 1950s, if it were occurring in "our" reality. The story occurs in a reality that I think we'd all prefer to have happened, over the one that did.

I Recommend to watch Porco Rosso, this is my favorite movie from Studio Ghibli,

Miyazaki is my favorite director and all the studio Ghibli are a must watch (the whole 23 of them).
However, here's my short list of those who you should watch next and are my all time favorite (apart from the 3 you already saw)
1 - The Castle of Cagliostro.
Not Ghibli, Miyazaki first film and my favorite of his.
Just such a fun movie.
2 - Nausicaa and the Valley of the Wind.
Sort of Sci-Fi with ecological undertones (a staple of Miyazaki).
Fantastic film and with its success, Miyazaki created Ghibli a year later.
3 - Laputa- Castle in the Sky.
The most 'block buster' Ghibli film.
It has pirates, alien technology and laser shooting robots.
A total blast.
4 - Kiki's Delivery Service.
Along with Totoro, this might be the most wholesome Ghibli film.
I just love it.
5 - Grave of the fireflies.
Not by Miyazaki but by Ghibli co-founder Isao Takahata.
A film about kids in WW2.
A hard movie to watch even if beautiful.
Definitely have tissues ready for this one.
As I said, the whole Ghibli/Miyazaki cinematography is a must watch but start with these ones.
Trust me, they're all A++ material.
he's also the creator of demon souls, dark souls, bloodeborn etc. he was heavily involved. and alot of their inspiration came from their spiritual ancestor called Evergrace and Forever Kingdom. heck, even the billianna trees resemble the urd tree spawn

try the world masterpiece theatre series by nippon- based on western literiture, some of which got english dub broadcasts back in the 80's/90's. heidi, perrine en family, anne of green gables, marco, flone of mystrious island, the trapp family, little women (they don't kill the one off in this one- glad for it!), pollyanna, little princess sara, shirlock hound, peter pan, arabian nights, little lord fauntly (i think how its spelled) and more- worked on by the senior ghibli founders in their early years! they can be a struggle to find but there are fan subs like "licca subs" and some have even gained blu-ray treatment. honorable mentions: georgie and candy candy (only knock offs exist!).
I loved Miyazaki movies as a kid. But boy, do they hit different now as a grownup!
Please watch Howl's moving castle its my favorite ghibli film!

This film is so sweet it makes my teeth hurt. I haven't seen them all, but I think that this might be my most favorite Miyazaki title. Aside from the daughters and Totoro and his gang, the things I love about this movie are the inclusion of and importance placed upon nature, the natural world, natural beauty and the importance of the imagination and play. He's like a Japanese Mr. Rogers as a filmmaker.
We often respond to great art with tears and/or laughter, and this one had both. I'd be very curious to see how you react to "Everything Everywhere All at Once," (oh yeah that's an A24 film with 11 Oscar noms and seven wins), which turns me into an emotional Rubik's Cube every time I watch it.
I highly recommend "Anohana" TV version to you.
Although this is an anime, it will definitely make you emotional

I won't know how you feel deep down about this film, but I can offer you my experience, I saw this film at about 1996, I was about the same age as Mei, and this has been the centerpiece of my childhood. and all these years passed didn't dampen the experience for me watching it. it just made my heart so warm and full it's about to burst, the only way it can come out is through tears. it made life seem hopeful and worth looking forward to, it made me trust in humanity a bit more, even though I have bleak outlook on life. I think what this film does is it reassures and embraces our soul that have been so beaten down by life, and that comes out as relief for the burden we had in our heart , so the older I got, the harder I cried. this film is just pure good.

これは実はとても悲しいお話です。トトロは子供にしか見えないと思ってますか？何故カンタ君には見えなかったのでしょうか？
トトロは、死神で､二人は既に死んでいるので(途中から彼女達の影が無くなっている。)､トトロ(死神)が見えました。物語の最後で､五月(さつき)とメイ(May)は、親よりも先に死んだ親不幸者なので、天上界に行けず、公園(地獄)に留まります。😢
