How Effective are Face Masks Against COVID Infection?

  • How effective are your face mask-wearing habits at reducing the spread of COVID? Risk Bites takes a look at the science of what works better, and when.
For more information and links to further resources, please do check out the links below.
This video was produced in collaboration with Dr. Lisa Brosseau at the University of Minnesota, who has led research on the relative impacts of different mask-wearing scenarios.
    NOTES
This Risk Bites video draws on research by Dr. Brosseau and others on how different masks extend the time before the risk of infection becomes substantial when two people are in close proximity, and one has COVID.
The research builds on the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guideline of a 15 minute “window of safety” when in close proximity to someone with COVID and no masks are being worn. However, it is important to realize that, while this 15 minute guideline is useful, it is not based on scientifically sound data, and so is more of a suggestion than a hard and fast rule.
What is important though is how this “window of safety” increases with different mask wearing behavior.
In this video we don't explicitly address the widely-used K95 masks. These are not to be confused with NIOSH approved N95 respirators. However, they do provide higher filtration efficiency than surgical masks, and most KN95s allow a better seal to be achieved between the mask and the face, if worn correctly.
However, an important factor in mask leakage is how the mask is held on. Ear loops such as those found on many K95s do not ensure a good seal - as anyone who has struggled with their glasses fogging up while wearing one will know.
Masks that use multiple bands that go round the back of the head typically allow a better seal to be achieved.

I just want to know what % wearing a surgical mask reduces your change of COVID. Nobody seems to have done a simple study on this. You'd just need to get voluntary test subjects, divide them into mask-wearing and non-mask-wearing, and have a conversation with someone who is positive and infectious, then measure the incidence of COVID in group A vs. group B

@I Stand Erected: I don't care if you believe it, Erected, and you sound as though you have made up your mind and are standing firmly on that, however home made double layer tightly woven cotton masks have been estimated to be about 70% effective against viral transmission, including Sars CoV2. How? Because larger droplets that contain millions of viral particles will likely hit a mask and can help prevent these blobs from reaching a person's mucosa in the mouth and nose. The number of viral particles at time of exposure is what determines the severity of Illness (it is called the "innoculum"). No one is saying that cloth and paper masks are 100% effective and that if you wear one that you will never get sick. However, wearing one can greatly reduce your chances of becoming seriously ill. You are free to research this a little further- Stanford did a study, and there are others, which have shown masks to be certainly helpful. Be well, but please stop spreading misinformation.

@@riskbites Basic physics is calling you out. Covid is not a particle (Edwards 2021 et al), but an aerosol. Aerosols are not able to be caught by PARTICLE filters, especially face masks. 99% of the covid virons that are emitted by monkeys in the Edwards study were emitted as an aerosol. Masks used in a medical clinical setting are used to prevent body fluids from getting in the mouths of the staff and to prevent bodily fluids of the staff from entering open wounds etc of the people being treated. Mask packaging even have printed on them that they do not prevent exposure to virii. The testing on masks physically glues the masks to the dummy, and when glued provide only a 3% reduction in risk. Engineering solutions start at a 90% reduction. I don't know what a "fitted N95 masks" are but I am assuming you mean ventilators. Even HEPA filters used in isolation rooms in hospitals are not guaranteed to filter out virons, so they use a negative pressure system to exhaust all air in the room to the outside of the building to ensure prevention of contamination. There is a lengthy history of engineered solutions since the outbreak of legionnaires disease in "sick buildings". I give this video a 1 out of 10 for the fancy cartoons drawn. I take the 1 away for the shocking use of propaganda promulgated by the medical industry that is vying for funding from communist China or medical supply and pharmaceutical companies. Masks do not provide a lowering of symptoms like a placebo does and are known to cause over 40 pathological diseases and over 20 psychological conditions when used inappropriately, why was there no mention of these in this video?
