  • The Abyss of Life brings us to the point of questioning Toranaga's plan, using the most extreme measures. It was a beautifully tragic addition to the series and made the final moments all the better. Omi sees his uncle's true colors, John heads for his boat, and Toranaga has the moment he needs to strike. All the reviews, theories, and breakdowns start here! :D

茶室 Tea room. Before entering the tea room, the participants purify their hands and mouth. When Mariko enters the tea room, you can see the entrance is so small. That means all people are equal in the tea room. No matter how high a person's status, he or she must remove his or her sword and bow his or her head to enter the tea room.

To add for those interested, I stumbled upon Wikipedia's tea ceremony article after this episode. It describes the traditional layout including where the host/guests enters and sit, the orientation of the tatami mats, and more. Everything is purposefully placed and has a function. I loved the details, check it out. It looks like the show represented everything very well.

I don't know about mean for the sake of being mean. He did beat her. Also didn't have any problems whizzing that arrow past her face. And dying with him takes away her wish to die on her own terms: Alone.

20:20 I loved that scene, When he throws his robes down at the dirty ahh sailor after knocking him out and remarked how filthy he was. It makes me remember the one scene where John was stunned when Mariko suggested that he bathe again and he said it was 2 n a half weeks ago since he went IN THE SPRING! 😭😂 I now assume in E8 brodie probably bathes twice / three times a week.

You missed the mark with Buntaro and preparing the tea. They're performing a green tea ceremony, or at least that's what I was told it was called when I learned it as a child one summer I spent in Japan with relatives. Every movement he makes is scripted and has meaning. And I mean everything. The way he enters, sits, lays down the ladle, whisks the tea, places the whisk down, turns the cup 3 times, everything.

I think the tea ceremony steps are just steps to go thru, according to that tea school. They may have meaning, but not in service to the story. What may have meaning are the hanging scroll and the flower arrangement. Something like the language of flowers. What I think has the most meaning are what Mariko and Buntaro exchanged when talking about the flower early on.
When Mariko and Lord Toranaga exchanged phrases later on also has meaning showing what they’re really thinking.

@@HaxDogma I think you're projecting western sensibilities onto a very Japanese thing here. There are many things we considered gendered in western culture which may not be so in Japanese culture. Poetry, painting, and tea ceremony are things which are specifically part of samurai culture.

Man I hate Buntaro but this episode made me feel bad for him because the dude is clearly cracking at the seams
His wife don’t want him, she don’t even want to him to kill her AND he has to second out his own father

I didn’t feel all too bad but the circumstances are still pretty tragic…although it can be argued that it’s his own doing

Not to mention the culture defining much of how he behaves with his wife. His father was actually cold as steel, and I have no doubt Buntaro stuck to the harsh aspects of the older generation to make his father proud. He is a victim and victimizer, this shouldn’t come across as justifying his abuse, but we can feel for him and the tragic life he lives.

The real Buntaro was a student of the respected Tea Master in their court.

Going by the actor's accent I believe Solomon may meant to be one of the Dutch crewmen. Coincidentally as someone who grew up in the northeast of England, living in Spain and Portugal I have sometimes been mistaken for Dutch, usually when speaking Spanish or Portuguese. Top work, detailed as always, carry on.

I think, this tea ceremony was not something purely feminine at the time. In the official podcast or the making of for the tea ceremony scene they say that the real life person who Buntaro was based on was known for his art of tea making. They also said (in an earlier podcast) that writing and poetry (and I think also tea ceremonies - not sure about that) was just as much part of the skill set a samurai should have as was warfare.
Maybe you want to listen to this podcast. It's here on CZcams and gives so much background information about Japanese history and the characters in this show. Here's the playlist: czcams.com/play/PLIDyzBpnfjqnotNeH1fcGvu6K_BfpjBcN.html

Mariko's mission has to do with Lady Ochibo. She will either bring her to a fateful end, or help her and her son escape. I think it's probably the latter so the son's forces can ally with Toranaga.

How much are you allowed to use from the genuine material under copyright regulations? Some scenes are quite long, others just a few seconds and still get cut. Just asking out of curiosity.

Tea ceremonies are not an effiminate thing to do in Japan.
For some time women were even forbidden to do it.
Her statement about not wanting to be with him in this life or another was related to the aspect that at the one hand he has been a dick to her for quite a long time and it might not have been the first beating she got and on the other hand that he doesn't understand why she asks to die and inserting himself takes away from what she sees as why she does it.
