Shogun is the new FX/Hulu historical drama based on James Clavell's 1975 novel of the same name. In episode 8 Toranaga (Hiroyuki Sanada) is faced with an ultimatum from his old friend and closest advisor Hiromatsu (Tokuma Nishioka). Stop his plan to surrender or Hiromatsu with commit seppuku immediately. His vassals, followers, and closest advisors are urging him to fight back but Toranaga says the cost would be too high.
John Blackthorne (Cosmo Jarvis), is reunited with his crew only to realize he feels strange around them. Mariko (Anna Sawai), and Buntaro (Shinnosuke Abe) share a tea ceremony that doesn't end the way Buntaro would like.

The acting in this series is first class. Everyone should be very proud of their work in this. Pete, your breakdowns are the only ones worth watching xxx
The quality of the acting always seems to surprise me even though it's been great throughout. they keep finding ways to impress.
The acting, yes, with the significant exception of Jarvis. The scene with the man playing his former shipmate, well, it was painful to watch.
Hiro's acting was great. Much more visceral than Toranaga's.

Hiromatsu is the best portrayal of a samurai in any series or movie I've seen
That scene was awesome. You could feel the tension between two old friends.
Do you know how a real Samurai looks like?
How about the Daimyou in "The Last Samurai"
I would like to note the excellence of the Japanese actors. They are all first rate and its inspiring to see such a high level of professionalism my everyone. Hiromatsu's and Toranaga scene is an example of acting with your eyes alone. Love this show.
Yes!! Totally agree. Even though Buntaro was a despicable character you could see his depth of pain simply by the actor's subtle facial expressions in both the tea ceremony and the seppuku scene. Not a good day for Buntaro! I was even crying for him- gaaah!!
@@maryrippy130 Buntaro is now my favorite character because of how complex he is
@@nont18411 I know many people don't like him because he beat his wife and is an abusive father. All true, but considered normal for the times. That aside, he is one of my favorite characters. I can't wait and hope to see some more badass combat from him.
It is amusing that this series has turned out not to be the Blackthorne and Mariko show as so many of the haters expected it to be. In fact Blackthorne so far has been relegated to be a bit player with little to offer, other than the lucky saving of Toranaga during the EQ, for humor as an antagonizer of the Jesuits and the romance between he and Mariko has barely been addressed in the show, unlike in the book and original mini-series. This has been a Japanese production of the Shogun novel. Other than the few scenes with Blackthorne, nearly every scene is spoken in Japanese dialogue with subtitles.

The fact that we rarely see any action or samurai actually fighting, and I AM STILL on the edge of my seat watching the story unravel, fully invested in all characters says it all. This series is an absolute master class of motion picture film-making.
The show is going to win all the Emmy's. ALL the Emmy's.
It by all rights should..but because its not a "woke" show...it wont
@@infamousjoker7651please stop

If the contest should revolve around 3 Body Problem and Shōgun, 2 completely different genres, then the Emmys have a very hard task on their hands.
What's hilarious about Mariko's arrival on Yabu's ship is that everyone there thought Toranaga had no idea they were going to Osaka, until her presence and message reveals that no only did he know, he fully expected this from both of them.
This is evident by Omi warning his uncle about Toranaga's possible retaliation should he find out about this journey. Mariko carries a letter from Toranaga addressed to Yabushige, confirming he not only knew, but wants him to do a certain job there.
BUT Mariko's presence and her orders to accompany them signals that Toranaga also expected the Anjin there. Mariko has nothing to do with Yabushige, but Toranaga knows Blackthorn still needs an interpreter to properly communicate with Yabu.
Basically this is just a very subtle way for Toranaga to say "you thought you could outplay me, but I was ten moves ahead of you all along "
Didn't toranaga send him to Osaka to deliver the guns tho?
Bromance between Blackthorn and Yabushige is something I didn't know I needed.
Mutual respect for each other. I liked how he was dying to get back to his crew but once he sees one of them drunk and disorderly he seems to have grown an affection for the Japanese than to his Englishmen where he will have to make a choice. I don't know the rest of the story but I wouldn't doubt that he sends his crew back to England to setup commerce with Japan as he builds a fleet for The Shogun.
A true bromance transcends any language/cultural barrier. ; )
and both can have tendencies of being a scoundrel but underneath is a heart, yabu’s ofc being a bit more twisted lol

One of best shows ever. Every episode amazing and this one blew it out of the park
Even felt for Buntaro being rejected by his wife then have to behead his father and not allowed to commit seppuku
Buntaro is such a good charrecter...
It many ways this was Buntaro's episode.
They know how to build drama here without telegraphing the outcome. This show seems to be a product of a more patient time.

My theory is that Torunaga could not trust any and I mean any of allies to keep it secret that he had no intentions of actually surrenduring. And if Ishiso had any sort of indication that he wasnt surrendering, it would be all over. He simply could not take the risk.
1. Yabushige
If Torunaga ordered him to attack with the cannons instead of Yabushige doing it on his own, he runs the risk of Yabushige or any of his spies (or Ohmi) spreading the news all the way to Ishido. Yabushige had to make the decision of his own volition.
But Yabushige was banking on Torunaga having an ace up his sleeve and wouldn't dare to step out line with his own plans. Hiromatsu's seppuku was the final thing which Yabushige needed to believe Torunaga had lost his mind and finally surrendered, which led him to accept John Blackthorne's offer.
Ultimately, Yabushige and Ohmi were to the weak link that gave Ishido too much info on Torunaga. And in their vulnerable state, Torunaga must have assumed his clan was full of Yabushiges and Ohmis that would betray him.
God damn man. 😂 Hard being a leader.
That’s what separate the average Joes like us from the legendary shogun like Toranaga
❌ Torunaga
⭕️ Toranaga
The man who stands at the greatest height is the loneliest man in the realm. A teaching Toranaga tried to help his son learn, but ultimately failed.
Toranaga will do anything to win, even if it means sacrificing those that seem closest to him. The reason this show is so compelling is that no one is pure or good. everyone has selfish, personal desires counterbalanced with the harsh world they live in.
He envisions a unified country instead of repeating into cycle of violence, thus he must win.
And it's not like they wouldn't be sacrificed anyway, whether it's his son or Harimatsu, they will die with Toranaga in Osaka, to steal what little life they had left seems cruel, but he sincerely believes it means he can save even more people, including Japan. If he could sacrifice himself to save everyone and Japan, he would do that too, but that's not an option
Mach·i·a·vel·li·an style leadership. He's gotta think bigger beyond anybody. So sacrifice even if it's so personal & close kins must not be hesitated. Though I see that the world post GOT , things must be grand n more complicated. (Big departure from the original book.) Almost too much and intentional for the sake of being dramatic. I liked the episode. Especially the depth of Mariko vs shallowness of Buntaro. Really witty of Japanese culture.
He didn't willingly sacrifice them
That's what makes him better
They put their lives on the line for his vision with no thought of anything back
Most don't even know the vision which makes it so crazy
Man has real loyal vassals
Toranaga's desire to win isn't out of selfishness. It's out of the greater good. He truly believes that a Japan with Ishido & the Christian regents in charge would turn the country into a puppet of the church & systemize the corruption that's already there. Furthermore he didn't order Hiromatsu to kill himself, but his friend took it upon HIMSELF to do that-----so that no one else would have to. Including his son. Toronaga saw this & accepted his sacrifice.
One of the things a commander MUST do is to order people to their deaths to save many more. Toronaga will no doubt order Mariko to sacrifice herself in some way but the deaths of these loved ones is TRIVIAL compared to the many warriors who will die in the coming war for the country. That's war. You only do it if you truly believe in your cause, which he does.
Best episode so far. I'm not convinced that Hiromatsu knew of Toranaga's plan. Though I feel he knew that Toranaga had a plan and his sacrifice would further the plan. The reason I don't think he was informed of the plan is because of all the spy's. It would have been reported to Osaka if they met in private at any point. He even knows if he doesn't cough while alone, that would probably be reported as well.
Hiromatsu wasnt informed,he just figured it out on his own because of how well he knew Toranaga
I got the sense Hiro knew, he quickly spoke up when he saw the others in disagreement. They need them to believe defeat is inevitable so blackthorn, Yabu and nephew can convincingly get the council to drop their guard.
if you pay atenti0n to the details it can be spotef when Hiromatsu realize what is th plan in 46:05 shortly after Toranaga says "Now You make yours " look at his quick face ecsprssion , remember they now eatch other since he was little boy, i believe he treated him like his father ,pay attention how he blink his eyes .
hiromatsu knew his duty without being told, that is why he wanted his son to live so his son could fight for his lord when the time comes.
The significant look was enough.
The scene between Toranaga and Mariko was intense. Each was articulating their own grief. Mariko's grief for the family, including recent ones, and honor she lost many years ago. Toranaga's grief of his son and dearest friend. I still suspect a history between Gin and Toranaga but those are only hints of such a thing. I loved this episode. You mentioned great acting. Ana Sewei's expression when Toranaga asked "are you ready for your part?". A mixture of relief and conviction and; I would hazard to say, a hint of happiness.
Ana Sewei is a real surprise for me. I absolutely hated her character in the Monarch series as she is super annoying. She truly shines in this role.
@@MRDARRENGER
Same. I found her annoying in Monarch, but in Shogun, she's perfect.
This episode was crazy!!!🔥🔥🔥 I hate it’s just a miniseries!

Can we give props to the actress who plays Lady Ochiba? When the Taiko’s Widow passed, with no words, the way she begins to weep but quickly reels it in and hides her 1st heart regaining her composure with no words spoken just peak acting 👌🏿
Not her mum. The lady who died was the Taiko's widow. Ochiba was the Taiko's consort and is the heirs mother.
She lost the backing of the highest authority's wife and had to go back to fighting. For her son. If she shows weakness, they will both be swallowed by the wave.
It was well represented.
@@fatalshore5068 yes this! Thank you for the correction. My original post has been edited.👌🏿
Well said, “complicated rather than calculated” in the scene with Hiro…it definitely felt real time.
One thing I like about this series is how deep it goes in exploring medieval Japanese culture. There are multiple rules that are strictly followed. Also among the elite their communication is very subtle.
(SPOILERS)
Mariko and Buntaro are an example of this. They have been married for many years. Buntaro believes he understands his wife at least to some extent but she explains that he does not understand her at all. If she is going to die, it will be on her terms. She wants to be free of his control and their marriage, and only if they are divorced, only then would she choose death or life. Buntaro is devastated by that.
Mariko also explains to Blackthorn that he does not understand what loyalty in Japan means. Blackthorn is baffled by Japan but then he realizes that he no longer wants to be a dirty, smelly European. Blackthorn is slowly being pulled into the Japanese way of life.
Toranaga is navigating this maze of Japanese culture and the tremendous threat to his life. He has a vision for Japan but he has to win it against what seem impossible odds. Toranaga’s only option is delay. His son’s accidental death allows 49 days of mourning before going to Osaka. The sacrificial death of Hiromatsu gives Toranaga more time for mourning and it also forces his generals to back down and be loyal to Toranaga’s commands.
In the meantime in public Toranaga is playing the sickly, defeated old man. Back in Osaka this play acting by Toranaga gives Ishido the confidence that he has defeated Toranaga and that his surrender is a formality. So, Ishido respects Toranaga’s days of mourning because it does not matter to him. Ishido is convinced that Toranaga is going to lose and Toranaga knows that. Like understanding hawks, Toranaga very accurately sees not only what Japanese people will do, but what Blackthorn will do.
Sun Tzu, keep your plans dark as night
The scene at the end where Ishido reads the letter and chuckles.
It is probably a letter from a spy informing him that Hiromatsu is dead.
He was convinced that he had won.
His old friend's sacrifice is necessary because there are spies in toronoga's court that will report back to ishido that toronoga is really surrendering.
He is simply playing the long game.
Kiku had that really great line to Omi ❤
The character that i am intrigued the most about is Buntaro. His loyalty was unquestionable in the beginning. He stayed back to help his lord escape. Then he comes back to find his wife being a little too close to a man he despises, then Mariko herself delivers a heartbreak, and despite his abuse there's a part of him that cares for her being his wife, and the episode ends with him having to second his father. He's now the most conflicted man out of the entire bunch. It'll be interesting to see how his fate pans out. We know he is a great warrior and a great asset to Toranaga and he could be as deadly were his loyalty to change due to all the above factors.
The scene between Hiromatsu and Toranaga is probably the best acting ive seen in a long long time. Its like, at some point, it clicks for both that that is what is needed to be done, from there onwards its like both are acting in a play, trying to really sell it, while both are heartbroken.
Incredible scene to watch twice. The first time i watched it i reacted as Yabu, Omi, Buntaro, etc... after a second watch maaaan.... i ended up ugly crying, amazing acting
This episode was outstanding! So was your analysis. Well done!
One thing I haven't seen anyone mention, was that you can clearly see the ongoing construction happening in Edo in this episode. At first I thought that was just a neat detail by the showrunners, however looking into Tokugawa's history, he spent a considerable amount of time developing Edo from a small village to rival large cities at the time like Osaka and Kyoto. Edo became a center of culture for Japan during the Edo Period. The city is now known as Tokyo. It also made so much sense now why the Jesuits wanted to build a church in Edo so badly.
Definitely my favorite episode so far!!!
Who thought that you could feel compassion for Buntaro? Mariko basically committed seppuku on him. Whoof
I've read the book (and other book of Clavell's Asia Saga) but a long time ago, I've watched the 1980s series and I love this series, how it has moved away from the book's and the older series eurocentric perspective and put Blackthorne a little bit more in the background. I've no problems with the changes so far, and I'm really looking forward to the last two episodes and a season two.
It’ll be only one season
This episode is the CLIMAX! The two remainders are closures.
"I would sooner live a thousand years than die with you like this"
I'd say she repaid his abuse to him with interest, those words cut right into his core. This scene was as savage as it was beautiful

As always Pete, yours is by far the superior review of each episode of Shogun. Despite the fact that I need to wait almost 48 hours - here in Australia - after each episode to see it. By which time I have viewed several inferior reviews & am even more keen to see your ‘premium’ one. 😂
Toranaga purses secrecy at such a great price I think he suspects the loyalty of his inner circle. Probably true given Yabu's wobbles...
Been waiting for this!
Yes, EXACTLY. Toranaga never wanted it to be Hiromatsu but Hiromatsu decided this was the best way forward, especially when he saw one of the other generals going for his sword.

The scene with Omi's speech was a masterpiece
This week was one of the best episodes and yet I say that every week
if you notice: Toranaga give a Deep eye blink of determination to hiromatsu when hiromatsu going to do seppuku, hiromatsu know that he is going to be victory and hes death pave the way :D the eye acting IS BEYOND. if you notice body language from toranaga to hiromatsu you notice... THIS IS ALL A PLAN!!
Plans like that only work if you have at least one friend in on it. If absolutely everybody believed 100% that Admiral Nelson was sick and dying and wanted to go meet the Spanish armada to surrender, we'd all be speaking Spanish right now. It's not supremely clever to convince your army that you are surrendering and pray to the Shinto that your generals have read the script for episode 9 and 10.
Best interpretation of the show. I subd
I like to think that Nagakado burning represents a stick of time similair to the previous episode as Toranaga says "You have bought me more time."
buntaro had a rough day
Oh man, I really wish this episode was divided into 2 or 3 episodes. There's actually so much to work with and so much going on
The best episode to date is 8. The last 2 episodes are now guaranteed to be epic as we know Toranaga plans to fight to his death, although that won't be necessary as he'll win. Fantastic acting by all actors involved in this wonderful program. They made changes from the book but none of the changes bother me and some even improves on the story. Bravo to this 2024 Shogun. I still like the 1980's Shogun, but this one is better in a number of ways. For one, the ending was far less obvious in this 2024 version.
How and where do you get and put together these clips? It is so fascinating to me. I’d like to do something similar with another topic in the future. Thank you.
So weird that I felt bad for the guy because Mariko did not want to commit seppuku with him. I mean even if she accepts, it seems not so great for him.
I've not read the book and I've only seen clips of the 1980s shogun program. That said, I have liked the 2024 version thus far. Hiroyuki Sanada is excellent as Toranaga and Anna Sawai is another star here
This was my favorite episode so far.
I have seen people write "Toranaga" as; Torunaga, Toronaga, Torenga, Torinaga, Toranga, Tronga, Tongara, Tonaraga, Tornga, Tonga, and Tronga.
Very hyped to see how things play out. The title of the next ep is interesting but I don't know if that's how it will play out.
The only thing we know is he succeeds, I think that is fairly obvious.
I also watched the last samurai at some point and man this blows the movie out of the water imo. Different formats so you can't compare it 1:1 but this feels so much more rich and detailed.

When Toranaga asked Mariko if she was now ready to do her part, I took that as a confirmation that Hiromatsu and Toranaga agreed to stage that scene beforehand.

04:06 I wonder which parameters is Yabu considering when ranking being eaten by a dog -higher 🤔
I had a feeling that he was ranking worst/dishonorable ways to die.
@@inetnomad3521 Most likely.
It's really specific. Being killed by a dog is one thing but I feel like he's so into the list that he would make a distinction. When the person is consumed by the dog that's somehow worse.
08:18 Do you see the small square wooden door behind Mariko? That is the entrance to the tea room.
The traditional Japanese tearoom is a small hut built in the garden, separate from the residence.
And the small, narrow entrance means that
"all people must bow their heads and cannot bring swords into the tearoom, which means that everyone in the tearoom is equal in status and position"
I think that Buntaro's reason for inviting Mariko to the tea room may have been to have a private conversation and more importantly, "Let's be honest with each other today”
Mariko plays such a beautiful actress,, what a beautiful woman
I think Taranaga's cough is faked. He's "acting out" like he's a broken, sick, tired, ready-to-die old man. Watch out. He's crafty, and a visionary.
Also me: after reading the comments section, I'm heading to watch it again for the second time
9:56 the flooring is the shapes of the Fibonacci Sequence
In the last sceen where Toranaga(Sanada) making his prayer to his son and Hiromatsu, I noticed that his prayer is a signature move of Sonny Chiba I believe it is a homage to Sanada's master of acting in jidaigeki!!
Funny that Mariko talks about loyalty when Toranaga was willing to leave Blackthorne with the Portugese just to save his own skin, and this was after Blackthorne saved Toranaga's life twice
You are right, Pete. Toranaga isn’t a cold blooded monster, but is an unwavering chess master.
I’m sad that Hiromatsu died!
Was solid character. Sad to see him go
Hiromatsu made me look away in painful tears. Damn you.
these last episode are going to be insane
I like this Shogun series,, I wanna see more than 8 episodes,, are there more,, I can't wait
A quick Google search would let you know that there are 10 episodes.
I wish I could say I like this version but very lackluster overall. Starts off with Blackthorne being the center of the story to the point where he is an afterthought. Yes, it's called Sho-gun but anyone who has read the book would know what I'm talking about. BTW, no chemistry between the Blackthorne and Mariko characters.
Hi I’m from Japan and would like to tell you the meaning of ‘49days’ after Toranaga s son died. In Buddhism, when people go to the other world, they will be judged every seven days from the first seven days to the seventh day, and the destination will be decided at the judgment on the last 49th day. There are 6 destinations after death. The remaining family members and relatives will hold a memorial service so that the deceased can go to paradise by praying that the suffering of the deceased will be removed. Toranaga could use this 49days of his son’s death to making plan and prepare for fighting. This custom remains as a funeral custom in Japan to this day.
Thank you.
I "love" how feckless Blackthorne is in this FX Series. In the book, he had fought pirates, Spanish marines, was a Lord in his own country and learned Japanese quickly. Here, he walks with some strange bow-legged limpy gait and doesn't seem like a lord at all. In the book the Japanese and the Portuguese were amazed how quickly her learned the Japanese language and his attempts to learn and fit into their culture. His arc in this series is nearly pointless thus far. His love arc from the novel, gone, his knowledge and usefulness, largely gone. His loyalty to Toranaga, gone. It's a shame really.
I expect a lot to happen when they make me wait a whole week for the next episode.
Loyalty and the perspective of what capacity of loyal the subjects are to Toranaga is seen in this episode. Some offer loyalty on conditions like the courtesan, priest, and Habushige. His son demonstrates blind loyalty by trying to kill his uncle not knowing all of the true plans. Mariko learns of what she must do to be loyal to Toranaga. Hiromatsu is pure loyal because hes willing to sacrifice himself in order for the plan towork. This is foreshadowed in blackthornes and Marikos conversation. Toranaga is playing 3-D chess
It would be so cool if Toronaga wins the battle and they play the song Big in Japan!! Great show!
Buntero is about to be a force of nature in battle.
SPIES. EVERYWHERE!
Torinaga also designed things to get Anjin close to the one general who actually is playing both sides, and with the cannon and guns.
I have to ask, is it hinted in the book or first miniseries that Toranaga was chosen by Taiko to impregnate Ochiba to secure an heir? In this story at multiple times the sexual (and reproductive) prowess of Toranaga is mentioned. Also, given the real history Pete mentioned (that an adult heir was adopted before a true born heir came about), that Taiko would want an heir even if it's not his blood to secure the realm.
any of the episode's final 3-4 scenes could have been the cliffhanger
Im a little confused with Omi, is he turning to Toronaga’s side now??
I also feel like this whole season is building up to another possible season?
