I'm not a fan of sharing my personal life on social media because people use it against you. When you talk about family, I don't know, I'm just private, and I don't care for people to know about my family. That's between my family and me. Nothing's wrong, we're all happy, everything's hunky-dory, but I just don't want to let them in on my niece and nephew's life, or my personal life, or am I dating someone or am I not.
It's like my life is my life and I'd rather just people stay out of it. I'm not famous or anything like that. I just like my life being to myself. Another reason why I don't share everything, and I don't know if I've told you this, but as your business grows-- and I'm not saying I'm more successful than other people, you tend to get sued quite often. And I've been sued for the silliest things, like referring someone to a friend who does a good job or just not even a friend, referring someone to a company to do work, I don't get a kickback or anything, and they're not happy with that person for whatever reasons.
I tell them on the phone, make sure you vet them, check references, get case studies, whatever, don't rely on my word. Make sure you're happy with them before you write them a check. Then they come back, they're not happy and they sue me, or they leave nasty comments on Facebook, and they expect me to pay because I have money. They're like, "Well, you referred me." And I'm like, "You didn't sign a contract with me, "you signed it with someone else."
I recently had this with someone, and I wrote them a 10,000, or five or 10, or whatever thousand dollar PayPal payment, just to get them out of my hair. I think it was 10,000 bucks. And they were like, "Thank you, you referred them." I was like, "Well, I don't work with them, so ..." And they're just like, "Well, you should." They're like, "I'm a small to medium business."
The more you show personally, it just causes more problems because everyone's like, "You have money. "You have this so you should take care of me." Or when I referred people to others, I even got sued and got letters from lawyers being like, "You owe us all of this money back." I'm like, "You signed a $150,000 contract with someone else. "It didn't work out, so you expect me to pay you $150,000?" And I still have costs because I have to deal with this legally.
For all of you out there who are sharing stuff on the social web, there's nothing wrong with it. I wish I could do it in a nice, friendly way and not get too many people coming back at me and using it against me. In most cases, 99.99% of you guys are awesome.
When I share a family photo or anything, you guys are commenting. You know, I've left pictures of my family in Indian outfits or me in an Indian outfit, and I love the comments that I get from all of you guys and it brings joy to my life. But when you get too personal, and you share things, like where do you live, I don't have a car, but people assume things, and when you get personal with social media, a lot of your personal life just comes in.
I'm afraid that people will use it against me because I've already had a lot of lawsuits and issues like that. And that's really why I don't get too personal on the social web. In addition to that, I know many of you guys have like the latest iPhone or whatever. I still have an old device, right? It's not fancy. I don't pay a lot of money for phones. I'm not one who wants to be holding up a camera and being like, "Hey, guys, check out my latest "Instagram story."
Again, for many of you guys who love that, nothing wrong with it. Yes, you can generate leads and sales with it, right? You do an Instagram story; you can have people swipe up to go to your website and drive conversions. But I don't think all of life should be about sharing and capturing the moments. I'm a big believer in just living in the moment, and I'll keep a mental note of it. I'll enjoy that moment for what it is in life, and that's it.
I'm happy to be living in the moment versus being like, "Oh, my God, perfect lighting, "let's take a picture." That's just not me. I'd rather experience things with friends, family, and have it to myself, and not worry about capturing it or taking a picture, because for me, if I'm in the moment, I'll remember it. And that's good enough.

Totally agree. I don't share much of my private life either (on social media or in person) because listening ears are often running mouths!
People are delusional sharing their lives on social media. You're only asking for trouble. People use it as their gossip material and as you stated, snoop through your things to try and find some way to use it against you. People are NOT your friends for the most part.
It definitely can be risky to overshare!
@@neilpatel Yes, Sir. That's why I don't do it.
Very true. I have seen people doing that in front of me. I feel like it's seeking validation from other people.....
@@neversettleforless4310 thirsty, desperate people
Literally the reason I don't have a social media presence
It's your own life .And you are the owner of your life .
Yup!!
Sharing personal things on social media feels to me like being on a reality TV show or some kind of weird thing where my routine is in display for the people. It is just so strange, I use social media for professional purposes ( I am an actor) and it has worked perfectly. Plus I am an introvert and loner person and to be this private is such a great joy. You also learn who are your real friends and all that.
I totally agree! It's personal preference but I like to keep my personal life private :)
I definitely agree !
Agree!! It's so weird if you think about it. I have a family member who posts every day! How she feels, that she goes to a shrink etc etc. I mean why? It's embarrassing.. I am a very private person, keep my goals etc private and some people think that there's something wrong because I don't post much🙄🙄🙄 maybe it's the other way around?? People who need validation/attention and likes every day are the ones with issues. Sorry not sorry🤷♀️
And like you said, I also love keeping things private, it's the best way to live your life and gets you way further in life then relying on a bunch of 'fake' comments and likes because you really train yourself to do things for you.
Omg I agree!! Reels and Tik tok are also super weird to me. I feel like every one is an actor now and it’s just weird and cringy at best. 😖
you are one smart lady. social media should be used for business and or bringing awareness for certain causes
Thank you, I don’t share my personal life I don’t post with my partner and my family on social media
Me neither!
I don’t blame you! Very smart. Some things are just private.
Definitely, Barbie :)
Right! Relationships, family, where you live, and etc.
This video is a few years old , but the message behind it is still very relevant today. Thank you.
Glad you liked it, Bella!
Sometimes I feel guilty about not sharing too much personal life. So great to find a likeminded person to agree with. Great video Neil. Makes psychological sense too! Humans can be weird people sometimes and it's always smart to be mindful of that.
Totally agree, Martin!
It's a good thing! Don't feel guilty🙂 You give others little to gossip about when they don't know much of your business.
Right Neil! Personal life is not anyone else's business...you bring a lot of value in every appearance and that's all what matters. :)
Thank you, Manav!
People sueing you due to a recommendation? I guess the world has forgotten the actual meaning of personal responsibility. Another great video Neil! Thanks.
The things some people will do.. You are very welcome!
Thank you! It is really unbelievable to me how willing people are to post every detail of their lives on social media with no regard to privacy at all. I really don't understand it at all.
It's definitely not for me!
Amen!!!!! Best advice every! Live in the moment not the highlight reels on social media.
Thanks a lot! :)
You are transparent, loving, humble and thriving towards your goal. I got connected with you because, the words you say in the video are already in my mind. I see you as my alter ego. Thank you Neil the champion 🙏🏻❤️
Wow, thank you! You're a champ :)
Totally relate! I'm with you Patel; our cultural needs to pull back and enjoy life and life is not on FB ;o)
Definitely!
Well said. I posted that I was 'in a relationship' and got no end of drama. I don't post much at all now, just general stuff. Nothing personal. Now I get 'there's not much info on your profile.' I'm still on Facebook but don't use it much. I'm more interested in real life
A lot of people feel that way now
We appreciate all the help you've offered along with your excellent course, Neil. So sorry to hear about your absurd lawsuits.
Thanks, Mary. There were definitely a pain!
Neil patel: “just to get them outta my hair” 🤔

That's why I went bald. So they couldn't get in my hair anymore LOL
Neil Patel 😂😂😂
U r not the only one I thought the same bro

My life got infinitely better when I removed all personal info from social media. I have a private Facebook and Instagram that would be completely untraceable to the average person, because I don't put any personal photos or my real name on there. I share some personal things on my channel, but I control the amount and how much I share.
I agree! It's better to keep business and personal separate :) That's my personal opinion, anyway
Absolutely Right Neil! You have a great thinking. Sharing on social media about the personal life is not that important. The more you share more you have problems. Like the way you think. A man should be recognized for his own deeds.
Thanks, Sachin!
My stomach tells me you are a good man. You gave us a lot of value, and to our small business (far away). thank you !
Thanks a lot, David!
All on point should have boundaries and limitations and be selected to what you share on social media, should be very limited.
I agree :)
Agreed
You give us a lot of value through your blog and other ways, and you're right, we all must be careful when posting our personal life in social media
Very important to be careful with that.
You are such a humble person Neil. Love your work. Keep it goin.
Thanks so much!
Totally agree. I like to live my private life in my own circle. I don't need to show the world that I'm happy as happy as can be :)
Nice :)
I am watching your videos and following you for a long time, also on website.
But this is my first time comment.
You are very down to earth person, like a typical Indian Gujarati.
People like us don't need to see fancy cars and big houses of our influencers, we need a person like you who gives true values from the bottom of your heart.
Keep doing what you are doing.
Thank you, my friend!
I don't blame you either. This something I focus on more both personally and professionally.
It's good to have privacy :)
im a gen z and Instagram really fucks up my head everytime w it's pseudo perfection and toxicity so i deleted it and there is this fomo and peer pressure so couldn't decide if I did right
Taking a mental break can be helpful and bring clarity :)
Remember when we had Diaries and you got mad when people read them? Now you get mad if people don't get into your personal life on social media.
Funny how time changes things, huh?
@@neilpatel Yep.
good for you neil. I really look to you for great advice about online business. you are a wise young man.
Thank you so much!
I admire you for being happy on your own and doesn't look for other's validation.
Thank you! :)
Me too with time, I've become very thoughtful (read careful) about what I should post and how often on social media... Yes social media should not determine our lives... We should not let it "Godify" or dictate over our lives.... We don't owe anything to it in the first place as think of the time in life before social media... Yes it was much simpler and happier right?!! ☺
I'm agree, friend. I love social media but it shouldn't dictate your life (unless you work as a Social Media Specialist ;) ).
I have so much respect for Neil Patel. When I first came across him, years ago, I thought he was a hack. He is sooooooo not a hack. I can feel his energy and it's amazing how he manages to stay so positive. This video is a perfect example of that. I often ask myself, "Is it possible for me to do what Neil Patel has done?" That's a question I still don't have a definite answer to, but the more I think about it, the more I come to the conclusion that his attitude, his positivity, his passion, and his outlook are really what drive his success at a fundamental level. Thank you so much, Neil Patel. You have made my life better.
Wow, Scott! Thank you so much for the kind words and continued support. And for not thinking I am a hack anymore ;)
Hahaha. Thinking you were a hack was a defensive, knee-jerk reaction. Brian Dean was my big SEO hero back then and he is still awesome. You two are a lot alike and I think you are friends if I'm not mistaken.
You have been vetted, Neil Patel, and you are the real deal. Now I need to figure out how to find more people like you and bring them into my life.
very well said!!
Everyone has their own privacy opinions (concerns) and one should respect them..
I was confused with this question for a long time, whether going personal only opens broad way into digital world or not??
And now i got answer for it..Thanks again!!
You are very welcome!
Awesome!
I guess everybody will agree 100% To You.
And By The Way: Your Short & Sweet Videos always Teach Something Absolutely NEW.
Thanks For That :)
You're very welcome!
I completely respect your decision not to share your private life on social media. Besides, you give so much more than many people who spend hours talking about their lives. I believe you are very transparent and honest, and that is what matters to me. Greetings from Chile 😊
Thank you so much, Pilar!
I agree. He gives us more value than thousands of pointless pics of food or shoes (and im saying this as a woman)! All i need to know is that he doesn't have a wife, bc im planning to marry him in the near future 😂
I agree with you about living in the moment. Good stuff.
Thanks, Chávez!
This touched ours hearts neil.. Thanks for sharing. 💓
You are very welcome!
Amen! I’m grateful I’ve always kept Facebook at arms length!
That's good!
Like they say.. "Some things are better left unsaid"..
Thank you sir for the the timely message 💯
My pleasure!
That is awful that there are trolls around every corner...hoping to pick up some breadcrumbs. Continue what you are doing, you are very appreciated.
Thanks a lot, Ryan. Don't worry about the trolls, I don't ;)
I post my artwork and that’s it. And I agree, people WILL use your personal life against you! He has a lot of boundaries and I admire him already.
I appreciate you, friend
Same!! I only use it to share my paintings, the creative part but I keep my personal life private and keep it low key all the time.
I like to capture the moments but not posting it and keeping it for myself ! But you had some good points
That's true, it can be like a personal journal as well :)
Well said Neil. Family matters should be private because their personal.
Definitely!
I totally agree never mix your work and personal life ever, I have had a lot of drama at work because of mixing things 🤔
Keep business and personal separate :)
My aim in life is to get where i dont even remeber properly how much i got sued for you are just amazing thank you so much i am entirely grateful
Thanks :)
It’s so true other peoples social media addiction harms others
Truly!
Totally agree. I share very little of my own personal life on the internet. There is enough on the internet about me, without my help - adding to it anyway 😊
Exactly, Jill!
True. I myself hate selfies. It looks dumb. It feels like "Oooh look at me doing blah blah."
I hear ya! To each their own :)
Great piece.
Thanks, Tony!
I agree very much. Glad there are more people like me 😊
Glad we agree :)
I think people share tomuch on line. I have only six people on Facebook. I have a very old phone because I think it cause people to think they are more important than they really are. False fame. Safety also people show so much of their home life and children and streets they live on. I have become more isolated because of the people recording in public all the time. I should be able to go out and shop and not have to worry or wonder if someone is recoding and posting stuff about me. We are not valuing ours and others privacy. Constant exploration served up.
I hear you, friend!
Your right Neil.
Same goes in person with let's say people you know. Gossip bad. Talking about what someone else doing dangerous. Depends. Thanks for video was helpful.
Michael
You are very welcome, Michael :)
I barely make any post on social media, my life is a mysterious. I do not like the attention, I do not like people being all in my business. Everybody will not be happy for you. This is why some things should be private.
Genius.. Perfect answer..
Thank you, Aamir!
My personal relationships, clothes, and doings are no one else's need to know. Work life has crossed the line.
Having a private life is nice, I agree
I agree with this video so much it's crazy.
Neil, hope you're doing well this week, man. QUESTION for you; how does one go about ranking high (SEO) for search terms including 'near me' with geographic relevance? For example; "dog trainers 'near me'".
Thanks as always, Neil!! You're the man.
Thanks for the question, I'll consider explaining in a future video. In the meantime, check out my articles about local SEO on my blog :)
Awesome - Local SEO - checking it out right now, Neil. I appreciate it very much, as always man!
Very good idea! I’m about to not share anything much anymore. So excited!! Like maybe once a month. Or a few pics of my son. I love showing a pic of my family having fun and that’s about it now. The new me! So excited!
I share a few pictures of my daughter once in a while, but not often :)
I don’t have kids but I’m an artist and I’m looking to just share less and less on social media. Excited to be making changes.
yep you're absolutly right' if it wasn't for work i would never get these social media profiles ! in fact i just opened a FB account for work when i never had one lol...thanks a lot
You're very welcome :)
I'm considering this approach to the internet now.
Great!
Great points
Thanks!
Wise words.
Thanks!
Smart man , true that and i wouldnt post anuthing that would even hint to my personals i cant sound single but iam actually married but only close ones would know , no one post personal life unless they deeply wish for it destruction 😗
Neil is the one of very good and innocent guy who i see in the world
Thank you!
Those who are giving you a headache are probably 0.001% of your entire audience, I'm sorry that you need to deal with these "Noisy Minority". You give us so much value and educate us so we can make a better decision down the road. No worries, we will all help you when the time comes :) as you have always been doing to us!
No worries my friend. Haters gonna hate ;)
Amen! ✌🤘 Totally makes sense!
Glad you liked it!
I dont share anything personal on facebook because i like to be very private. I dont like people kbowing about my life. And i just have like 10 pictures up to show am ok. Thats it.
Other dan that a few memes. I hide 80% of my life.
I'm the same way, friend :)
you are doing the right thing
Thank you!
That is just sad my friend. I think you are an incredible human being, that gives so much to everyone. I am truly greatful for all you do for everyone.😉 If you ever need anything that I can help you with, you have my number. Learning to be thankful is a wonderful gift 😁
Thank you very much :)
I wouldn't either, keep if private and share what you want.
Exactly!
Nice thinking
Happy to help :)
I could not agree with you more. You have helped me so much. Very few people have supported my choice to be socially free & not broadcast my personal life.
Thanks so much!!
When you live in USA you can get sued for anything...
Lol. True!
Great Neil I am also that kind of person and I just start my channel and start my digital marketing career PRAY for me
You got this :)
I'm not sharing my life on youtube anymore It is true people do use it against you. There are a lot of fake people on the internet. Be very aware.
I feel you! Be careful with what information you decide to put out there.
I don't like that i am so friendly and treat everyone like they are my friends. Ive noticed it gets me in trouble because others aren't happy or nice people. They seem to try to sabatoge others when they are jealous or want what you have? I just dont get it. I want to learn how to keep to myself and not speak all the time.
Keep working at it!
I was in ur shoes ! It’s really a daily task but over time u get use to it . U literally can’t just give everyone your energy ! I literally quit responding to people
everyone has a right to keep their personal as well as professional font separate :)
Totally agree with you!
Hi Neil, I used to post my life on fb till I realize that my business was in the public eye! I realize that and absolutely stopped it totally! Now I don’t post anything anymore not even a simple picture of myself! I’m not seeing approval for validation from nobody! I have my own approval and validation!
That's the best kind of validation :)
You are a very nice person Neil.
Thanks!
True I’m agree with you
Thanks, Tun :)
Neil Patel After I follow you and learn from marketing school podcast from you and Erick every morning before work , after almost 1 year I got this. my first video on CZcams and I like your style only share what you are good at.
I really want you to see and comment, I’m not native English speaking you know what my hand was so cold and shaky during video record.
Here is my video : czcams.com/video/eOIidKKCRWQ/video.html
Hi, Neil.
I'm very interested in the idea of SEO and content marketing. But how do I start a blog if the only skill that I possess is the ability to speak English (which is not even valuable in English-speaking countries)? Any advice would be highly appreciated.
Have a nice day!
You can either work with a native speaker to help or you can create a blog in your own language
Same here, I don't say it's wrong to have a social media account,it's just that I don't feel like sharing my private life, that's all.
Totally agreed!
loved
Thanks!`
Hi Neil, as a top online marketer. Could you recommend me this,
-should I create blog in english or my native language.
Depends on your goals :)
By seeing video i am convinced its #mondaymotivation got it on sunday :)
Nice to hear your thoughts

I think a lot of people are starting to realize that over-sharing isn't a great idea
Am I the only one that genuinely CAN'T UNDERSTAND why a person would want to share life and pics and shit on social media?
Come on, don't let me feel alone!
Lol
Me too😊😊😊
Great!
Whatever you said is true, You are the only person who is teaching people how to promote. God Bless you
Thank you, Vinay!
I want to start a youtube channel but I don't want people to know about my personal life like my kids, husband etc. I would like to create a make up channel but what if people start asking about my family and you don't want to? That's what makes me not want to start anything :( lol
I don't post about my family. On occasion I'll post a picture of my daughter but that's about it :) I wouldn't worry about it.
Neil 💕
:)
I dont share mine whether struggles or not and the world isnt a good place nor us the internet....and ppl look after themselves out here....no stranger isnt gonna care about you. You have to look after yourself. Stick to people you can trust. In irl cases and online
Very true!
Neil I have been sued too. Call me next time, I'll beat them up for you! Don't worry, Soggi is here. BE THE BEST
Since you ask Neil, somebody sued me for not teaching my secret death grip. Don't wiry, i won lawsuit quickly. KO under 30 second

Agreed!
Neil you mustn't try to do social service with people as people have become very money minded
Yes, it's unfortunate
