    • @AdriCr4ft
      @AdriCr4ft Před 4 lety +1

      For some reason my 3 different crotons that I have will only survive if I leave them on my bedroom windowsill 😅😂if I move them they drop their leaves. It doesn’t get full sunshine there and you can feel the chilly wind sometimes.
      I think it’s also the fact I have a heater under it. It equalises itself I guess somehow lol?!
      It’s the only place they grow like crazy as well. I don’t know what I will do when they over grow where they are lol

    • @sgunn2939

      @@AdriCr4ft that's interesting.. From when I saw this vid, I moved it and it was doing real great but it's just started to drop leaves :( maybe I'll try a radiator/window sill combo

    • @AdriCr4ft
      @AdriCr4ft Před 4 lety +1

      Stefan Gunn but if he was doing fine before moving maybe you should have left it :) its a picky plant. I lost 2 leaves by moving it to other 2 different spots that I thought were ideal. One in each place.But it wasn’t working and I didn’t want to lose another leaf as it wasn’t a big plant so I moved it back to the window/ radiator and it’s been growing new leafs there ever since!
      Make sure the window you choose doesn’t get direct sunlight!
      My bedroom is fairly darkish even in summer. :) good luck

    • @AdriCr4ft
      @AdriCr4ft Před 4 lety

      Stefan Gunn ohh I also forgot to mention! Make sure the leaves ain’t getting too much hot air😅 put your palm by your lowest leaf that’s on the side of the heater and see if you feel the heat and how much, if it reaches it and it’s too much the edges will kind of dry out. I try to turn it so less leaves are facing the heater and make sure the temp coming from it reaching the plant isn’t too high but warm.
      If you put your hand there and you can KIND of feel it but not too much, perfect.
      I guess they like warm temp since they come from hot places. Might be what’s making it grow 🤷‍♀️ just take everything I said with a pinch of salt because I am not a plant pro ☺️but I try my best.
      I also mist it every 3 days and clean the leaves and only water it when the soil is dry and when giving it water I do it like if I was to be drinking a glass myself 😂 because I know how picky it is and I am scared to kill it

      @@AdriCr4ft wow dude, thanks for all your advice :D when it was originally on the window sill, it wasn't doing great. So once I moved it away as Betsy said, it started doing a load better. Not too sure why it's getting grumpy now :( but yeah, I will try a few things you've suggested :) there are still quite a lot of the leaves thriving so it should be all good

    it always seems strange to me when i heard that that the things that i grow up with were poison or could kill you. i grew up in a yard in the Carribean with an overgrown croton garden of about 13 species. that garden was the safe house for me and my brother and sister until i was about 15 years old. it was where we play, hide, chill when it was too hot, learn to climb our first trees and much more. i can't tell how much croton leaves we ate back then when we were playing cow and goat. not to mention how many steams got broken and saps got exposed to our bare skins, since as boys on a tropical island, we don't tend to wear shirts at home. i even smoked a few croton leaves in my teen years as experiment. i am not denying that the plant could be toxic and that ones should not take care when handling them. i'm just thinking that we must have developed certain immunity to certain plants and foods that some people in other parts of the world have not.

    FYI, they actually can survive in a dry hot environment! I live in southern Arizona. I keep my croton outside on my porch and it seems to be okay. The humidity can get as low as 16%, typically around 22%. Temps vary from 64°F to 99°F (on my covered porch, it gets much hotter outside of it lol) Of course I keep it out of direct sun (my porch is covered with a 75% shade cloth). The only thing that it's suffered from is direct light when I was trying to find a spot it would like out here, the first spot got a little too much sun and burned some of the leaves. Now that I've found that perfect spot it's thriving I would say. So, they can survive and even thrive in a dry arid environment so long as you don't let them dry out for too long. Misting them once in a while helps too 🙂

    I live in NY where we don't get strong sun most of the year, and the only way my Croton is happy is if I put it in direct, hot sun during the summer. Yes, some of the older leaves get a little burnt on the tips, but direct sun is the only way that mine will develop new growth. Just some food for thought!

    I got a croton today haha. I had seen them around for a while and been really into them so figured why not when I saw a really big one at the mall today for 3 euros.I do have it in my bedroom which I believe has a south facing window since the sun show up super early and I do have succulents of all sorts there and they do really good, although my fittonia enjoys it here too and doesn't need misting. The humidity outside in my area right now is 85% but succulents seem to be really happy here even with that (I guess because we never get really cold and the sun is REALLY hot).

    I think a lot of the plant community show a lot of hate towards Crotons simply because they fail on them Ivy's to spider mites. I ended up with my first Croton mixed in with a clearance planter from Lowes. She wasn't looking good but I found their soil mix online, then put it in a west facing window with a mini blind. To filter the light I bought a tention bar and a 4 dollar white sheer curtain and popped this in behind the mini blind. This created the perfect filtered light and all my plants are thriving because of it. The happiest Croton is one you never move.

    I have a Petra Croton. I got it about 3 months ago & it had around 7 colorful leaves when I got it!
    It now has ... ONE LEAF LEFT that has been hanging on all alone for about the last 2 months!
    So now, I’m scared to even look at the damn thing! Hence the reason I’m here watching your video! I’m trying to figure out how to get it to produce and grow. Lol

    I have a gorgeous croton than lost lots of its leaves due to me neglecting my plant-mothering duties, and now it has an awkwardly long stem with new growth only happening at the top... is there any hope of regaining growth where the leaves dropped? would pinching help that??
    From one Betsy to another, all the best to you!

      @betsybegonia  Před 5 lety +1

      Ouch, I'm sorry to hear that. The best you can do is try and hope for a good outcome. It won't put leaves out where the ones have been lost, though. I'm sorry.

      im not an expert in crotons but you could try bending the plant over and tying its top down lower - this should send hormones out to the lower branches to start growing
      alternatively wait until the top has a good few strong growing leaves then cut it off with a sharp blade, use some rooting hormone on the cutting and transplant it into some rockwool or seedling soil and put under gentle light somewhere that is warm and has high humidity - a greenhouse or propagator. keep misting the leaves daily and hopefully the cutting will take root before it dies so you can repot and have a brand new plant of your prized variety
      its also possible that the original will begin to put out side branches in the same way as the bending method due to hormones - but the stress and loss of its last remaining leaves may put pay to that. but its worth a try
      those would be my suggestions, good luck

      heh im glad.. what was your method of rooting etc?
      as long as theres a good few healthy roots then go for it and pot up.. its like a growing child they need to be given room etc
      just make sure the medium you pot into isnt too rich in fertiliser etc. plenty of drainage/perlite and a fairly weak compost until its growing on strong and showing signs of wanting food
      take care 😁

    I love my croton (now 2 years old) but it needs quite a bit of attention. In summer it likes more water (like more more) and it got kinda big but now the winter months have come back and it goes yellow, leathery and drops leaves. It gets too cold and the sunlight is bad so it rlly doesn’t thrive, I really need to keep an eye on it to make sure it’s doing well. I went away for 1 night and now I’m back it looks like it needs a good loving. Repotting is also a problem as I’m running out of room that has sunlight, but I also don’t want to cut it back 😔
