  • Croton Plant Care Simplified! In this video I will explain how to help your croton go from cranky to happy. Croton care explained. The large croton, as seen in the thumbnail, is a petra croton I have had for over 3 years. This croton and I have had ups and downs, as I have moved several times in the last three years and after all this time I've finally gotten a hang of the care it needs to obtain growth and maintain its beauty.
Crotons are tropical plants native to S. India, but they are very common and sold widespread throughout the U.S. and North America.
I hope this video will help you whether you are a new or experienced plant owner.

It seems Crotons are more likely to have a round full form if they are planted into a bigger container, in my experience.
I often see them in small containers like yours, growing mostly just upward. But I think it can only get so tall before it starts leaning over. Mine is in a large (wider) pot and doing excellent for years. It grows outward and upward and has a lovely, full, bush-like shape. Other than that, I have it in bright sunlight for several hours per day in the window and only water when it gets dry. Very easy to care for!

Mine was attacked by spider mites that came through my screen. It looked totally dead. I cut it back it back to 2 inches of wooden stem. It was barren of leaves.
It stayed like that for over three months. I did not give up. Watered when almost dry. Fed it once. All of a sudden one day three leaves started growing and it’s been growing ever since. Thanks for the advice. I too thought the soil you used is a better mix. I’m about to transplant a new one I recently got. It’s so beautiful but root bound. I love the Croton. I had a gorgeous big Croton 'Petra' for YEARS and had no idea of what it needed. Never fertilized or did ANYTHING other than water it. It was near the sliding glass door so it was getting enough light but it was falling over. I had it tied for three or four years and finally said "I need to repot this!!!" I did that last year and it immediately started dropping leaves, until it had almost none left. I was devastated. I moved it upstairs into a room with two big windows and a bunch of T5 lights. It seems like it is putting out some new leaves but it's leggy now... I watched another video and was considering chopping and trying to reroot the stems...

Bruh I thought my big croton was like 2 or 3 croton cause I bought it fully grown but the lady replanted a bit deep and it's got like 5 stems. I didn't realize JUST HOW big some of these can get. This thing is a unit

I have 2 grow lights in my bedroom (full spectrum and a blue and red, i'm north facing unfortunately) just trying to figure out why they arent growing super fast, I also have a smaller variety of fiddle leaf fig so i do have a humidifier as well as a bowl of water with rocks to raise humidity in my room. i currently have 27 plants in my room most of which require high light and humidity so i'm trying my best but it's slow going, constantly rotating which ones get to sit right under/next to the light, needless to say i won't be getting anymore plants lol
Plants: 2 fall croton, japanese holly fern, 1 golden star croton, fiddle leaf fig, zzplant, 2 marble queen pothos, 1 majesty palm, aloe vera, lucky bamboo, florida beauty, hosta lily(the plant that hates me and refuses to either thrive or die lol), christmas cactus, pan amiga, bromeliad, 2 jewel succulents a coral bell and a lime twister (potted together), water cress, sweet potato, sweet basil, german thyme, peppermint, rosemary, and finally a lavender plant i'm trying to save because i didnt realize it was root bound when i bought it (mildly annoyed)

Hi Alexis, thanks for watching! Lol I can understand that, having enough plants. Well the good thing is it’s spring and hopefully the weather is warming go up where you are. If so perhaps you can place the croton and fig outdoor. They will love it for sure! 💚

I recently started taking care of plants. I bought my first croton two weeks ago and have it indoors (it’s around 40 degrees here now). It sits directly under my bright-white LEDs. I’m hoping this will be enough light to keep it healthy.

This was so helpful! I have this plant and scanned it to find out what it was because she just isn't growing! I thought the light was too much for it because it kept losing leaves. But now I find it actually wasn't enough and I was starving it off is humidity. Do you suggest maybe placing her outside for a few hours and then bringing her back inside. I have alot of direct sunshine in front but the trees are gone so no shade. I would love to see her grow like yours!

You can force your croton to start new branches by pruning . 2 stems should come from each node below a cut. Same with leaves, 2 leaves should come from each leaf you prune. Be careful to not cut too much of gf the plant at one time or it will go into shock

My croton is doing really bad 🥺 I think I wasn’t watering enough and definitely not a lot of sunlight. All of the leave are dried out. Idk if it’s too late to save but I’m soaking it in my sink and will give it more sunlight. I think they are so beautiful and I am doing great with my other plants but they aren’t as high maintenance lol.

Aww. Yes, they are light lovers. If the. weather is still warm where you are, you could try allowing it to recover outdoor on your patio. I have another video on croton outdoor care if you'd like to take a look. Thanks for watching! 💚

I am a new plant mom and have a croton and I'm noticing that my leaves have been falling off here and there. Not multiples but maybe one every couple of weeks or so. I do have new ones coming but I'm worried the ones falling off are from the plant being stressed. Maybe it's my soil? Or my watering? And advice?

I have one that I bought as a tiny mini plant and put it in a glass container, and just forgot about it for a year. It now fills the whole glass container and it is looking very healthy and happy. I haven't even watered it. I honestly don't know what to do about it now, lol.
